te and Joliet arrived in Chicngo and p1'oceded on their way to the Mississ ippi. On tlwir return Marqu ette spent the winter nt Chicago nnll in the spring died on the shore of Lake Micbignn. Soon after a fort 'was built at the moutlt of the riv er and for one hundred and three . years the :french held a tran~ i e nt possession of the place.

It was captmed by t he Engli sll nnrl ca lled Fort Dearborn, bnt shortly after it was destroyed by the IncHans.

In the year 1790 six sq n:ue milos of land about the fort ,:y~s ceded to tbe United States by the Indians and eight years nfter t he new Fort Dearborn was built and gnrr iwncd by 63 soldiers. U11brokcn peace reig ned abo nt the fort until the year 1812, when the In c1inns, in cited !:;y the Eng li sh made sflveral unsuccessfu l attacks on the fort. Finally a mcsenger arriv ed from Genernl Hull, then at Detroit, with orders t o evacuate the tort. The commonest soldier in the ranks saw the folly of such n pr::ceed ing, but order> had to be obeyed. Accord ingly on the morning of Angust 12th. 1812, the plnce was evacuated . When about a mil e and one half from the fort, the soldiers were attacked by a band of Indians, wh o, after killing t wo thi rds of the whites, obliged the rest to sunender.

All the wo unded were tomahawk ed and th e fort was destroyed. This engagement took pla ce about ~h e spot wher e 23rd street now crosses State.. The fort was r ebuilt in 1816 nnd Mr. Kinzie wit.h many of those who had escaped the massacre ofl812 returned. At t his time and for many years nfter there were bnt three fa milies and the g:;).rrison at Chicngo. In 1829 the town was laid out and from this date, it gradnnJly improved and incrensed in size and population. Four yems later, with a white populati on of 3!)0, the town was inco~·­ porated, the first newspaper-the Chi cago Democ1atwas st rn·tecl by John Calhoun and the pi oneer hotel of Chicago, the Grcentree, was ope ned to the pnblic. This same year the Indians ceded the remairrder of their lands in Illinois to the government anci set out to their 11ew home beyond the Mississippi.

Progress now became the motto of the inhctbitiuts of the incipient city, The sand bar that impeded the mouth of the river was r emoved and a stenmboat entered for tl)e first time. On the 4th of March 1837 Chicago became a city and in May the first Mnyor was elected- William B. Ogden, a Democrat. He received 469 votes; hi s opponent, Mr. Kinzie, a whig receiving 237 votes. T en years after its population nnm ber~ed 16,589.

Its bounderies were enlarged and remained so, ·until 1869 when they were extended to the presen t limits.

Day by day, people came and the city prospered won-

cl erfully, until in 18"/J it had a .pop~:~lation of 325,859. , But in thi s year, th e thirty eight o1 its existence, a calamity befell Ch~cago, which in a tew hours swept away the labor of years. This was the great ID.reof 1871. · "A voice js ringing in the air, A tale is trembling on the wire, The people shout in wild despair: Chicago is on fire." ..

At 10:30 Bunday night October . 8th, 1871 the fire began ncar the corner of De Koven and J cfferson Streets.

The origin of the fir:·e is shroud ed in mystery. The story of the cow kicking over the lamp is untouna ed and lacks certainty. The summe r and autumn had been very dry and everything burned like tinder. Moreover there was a strong south westerly ·wind blowing at the tim e and in an hour's tim e the fire ha\1 advan ced a mile. Crossing the river at Van Bnren Street, it attacked the busin ess portion s of th e 'city. Huge stone and brick 'structures melted bef<:we the flames. Along the river banks the great heaps of coal emitted dense volnm es of smoke.

The sh ipping and the bridges were also enc ircled by the fiery el e m ent. ~ At 2:10 the fire reached the court-honse ;,nd in a few. moments the vast structure was in lhmes. As the d ome totered the bell pealed, as if in sorrnv for the doomc(l city. Five minutes later the dome fell with an awful crash.

The scene presented at this mom ent was sublim e but trrrible. Millions of b lazing fagots were flyin g thrOt1 6.h the air; the roar of the ad;rnnuing tlam ~s , rivalled tl~e roar of the ocean in a t empest; the li mestone of whieh many of the buildings were made would flake off under the action of the intense heat, with a sound like tl1e continu ous di scharge of mu sketry. Now aud . then th e . dull t.hud of some falling building woulu reach the cn.r.

The intense heat created new currents of air and the lire often turned back, burning squares in tbe teeth of [L fierce gn le.

It is on occasions like this that the true chnrncter of men is seen; and i~ was certainly curious to note how the people of Chicago bore their loss. The streets were crowded with people hurrying hither and thither; strong men weeping like children; others composed but with looks of bl ank despair; elegant ladies dragging trunks about, who a day before could sca rcely lift a band satchel; children with swollen eyes and bl ackened faces vainly seeking their parents in that v ast ci·owd where each seemed intent upon himself.

By Tu eSday evening the fire h21.rl ceased. It burned while there was a bonse in its path and died away when it had no fuel bnt tbe open praries. The Queen City was in ashes, with smoking masses ofruins, grim, deformed and tottering walls to mark the site of her palaces. The fire bad rendered 100,000 people homeless; bad burned

17,450 buildings arid h ad swept over a surface of 2,124 square acres. The value of the property destroyed amounted to $199,000,000. The number of lives lost can never be cort·ectly estimated. It has been put down at 300. .

The great question after the fire was, how to provide for the hom~)ess. Relief was wanted, and it came. Never before had the sympathies of the woild been so aroused· It se~med as if that wave of fire had drowned the selfish feelings of men. Like a flash, the cry of distress went throughout the world, gathering strength as it travelled and the sum of $3,000,000 was contributed.

Cheered by the sympathy of the world the citizens went to work and Phamix-like Chicngo arose from its ashes, more beautifnl and magnificent than of old· Twelve prosperous ye:1rs have passerl since the frre and great things have been accomplished. No trace of the fire now remains. The population bas doubled and Chicago with the energy and pluck of her citizens bids fair to become, in the future, the metropolis . of the world. We welcomed them heartily and. entertained them to the best of our ability and we hope that, as tlley were delighted with our -rural home, they will come again to lend the gay charms of their presence to our festive days, and .if they choose remain in our midst and be oi'Yr fellow students. Si aucun moumcnt ne rappelle la mémoire de Montcalm sur les plaines d ' Abraham, nous en trouvons un bien touchant ici. Sur un· beau marbre placé dans le mur, à droite de l'autel et hors du sanctuaire, nous lisons ces mots en langue latine; "lei repose Montcalm, etc." Montclam, blessé à mort en combattant, se fit transporter dans ce lieu de paix et de sainteté. Muni des sacrements il s'éteignit paisiblement dans le Seigneur. Ses compagnons d'armes et ses compatriotes pleurèrent sa mort comme i~s nnraient pleuré la mort d'un père. Ils levèrent les mains au cîel en supplication pour le repos de son âme et déposèrent son corps dans cet asile sacré où depuis un siècle et demi il repose {l. l'ombre de l'autel. Quelles prières! Though the duties of your high office in the past as in the present have b.een always many, demanding your ...almost undivided attention:. nevertheless we always ·· ~1i1~d yon llere on noteworthy occasions to take part in our little celebrations-:-to encourage us to the a~quisi­ tion of a sound Catholic educatio:n of whieh you yourself are such . an admirable and jealous patron. In Reply The Vicar General answered and said he was delighteel to be among the students once more; it brought him back to 'the days when he himself was a boy·, clays .which he would like to live over again. He thanked the students for the very flattering sentirp.ents contained

Viateur and that he was· glad to have some members of the oniet to insttuct the youth committed to his care; that pe hoped it was on~y the beginning of the great work they are destined to perform and that the members may be soon established in eveTy city of the Union. Th@ Rev. Father dwelt especially upon the necessity of yonth being instructed in the learning founded on sound principles of morality which are sure to be inculcated in an institution like this. He concluded his very felicitous remarks by granting, at the request of Rev l!'r. Marsile an extra holiday, which favor was received with the greatest enthusiarm. WE) sincere1y thank Fr. Con way for the high honor and kindly interest he has shown us, and as he has not been a stranger to us in the past we hope to welcome him often in our midst in the future.

In the afternoon many of the games were played in the recreation hall and premiums were awarded to the champions as is shown in another column.

The day was well nigh spent when we thought we must bid it goodbye. According to the traditional custom we drew up the programme for the FAREWELL CONCEHT .

of the evening. After an overture by the College band Rev . Fr. Marsile was called upon to speak on the clay of St. Viateur. He showed the ·amiability of vil~tue in our dear young Patron Saint and said tha,t by practising the same virtues we would deserve "to dwell in the home of the blest where feasts know no encl. He also spoke of this day as bemg the happy occasion of meeting parents, friends, old College associates, teachers, and students of kindred Colleges. He expressed himself as the most sorry for. the infavorable weather we had yet, be said the bright smile of our young guests from Chicago is as sunshine around us.

This little family concert treated us to many tid-bits of genuine fun highly enjoyed by all. There were selections rendered by the Glee club, the Fireside-club, the Chicago Glee club; Vocal J os did his share. Clog dances, Dragoon songs, flute-solos, Arabian songs, ·were some Of the most enjoyable features of the evening. M:r. Sauliu ot Holy name school-also favored us with a masterly piece of declamation. Rev. Fr. Mainville was then called upon to give the closing remarks. He kindly and heartily thanked us all for the good courteous reception we gave him and the representatives of llis school. He said that be had spent many a happy year at St. Viateur's College and that, though his attention was called to another field, still he was glad to revisit his old home. :Fr. Mainville then tendered a most cordial invitat,iou to the Faculty and

SPORTING NEWS. The game of b~1se -ball between t he seminarians and el:"ssics, on Oct. 15, proved a v ery interesting one. The pl:tying ·on both si des was very good. The A clelph1:an in artistic make-up is as usual to the front. The matter it contains is a! ways very readable-though there ig an amo unt of room for endca v:ors to manifest more throrough literary taste.
