COLLEGE JOURNALI M. Whilst loob..i.ng over ome of the Exchanges sent to this office, it occured to us that, in more than one instance, their contents appeared in ingnlar contradiction to their title and object. T his kind of Journalism, it eems to us, departs from both these standpoints in seeking, by elaborate and exten ive essays, to enter t he domain of politics, the field of religious controversy or the high realms of state polity. These questions are amply provided for by experienced and well paid pens in the magazines and pre..."S of the country . If the writers of college journals left. such themes ~everely alone, confining themselves to their own legitimate sphere, much valuable time might be saved and their efforts thus wisely limited, might perhaps result in son: e permanent excellence. \Ve venture an opinion, and by no means wish to imply that the subjects mentioned, ma.y not be well handled fiom a literary point of view by college journalists. Indeed, trained literary merit ought to be a qualification, and ' visible, if :my where, in this kind of jomnalism. That it is not always manifest we confess in lldvance, and neerl no one to throw a stone into our garden, to acknowledge that at times. our own window has been pretty badly damaged. All we intend saying is that, few college men He, hy experience, trained to practica!Jy discuss these questions, with aptitude, precision and logic. The reason is plain. One phrase will, with all respect, convey our conclusion RS profit.'l hly as if we consumed time and a page in detailing it. College men arc young; "tbt>y must tnrr.v at Jericho until their beards grow."

With age generally comt'..s added wisdom, and many a.~ man at twenty five and thirty, has already lived long enough to regret the crude effusions of seventeen and even of the day of manhood's estate, twenty one; a fortil)n·, will he l:nnent at forty over what he considercrt geniu~, in the 8pring and sum met• time of his career.

Let no one imagine any slight is hereby put upon college joumalists on nceom1t of youth. This would he ungraeious and unjust to them and ridiculouS> in us; but.. onr prop~ition is that many jounmls, at times, forget their title nnrl their ol•je<·t. After all, a collt'ge paper is nothing more than a college reeord, and

To emphasize this range is to mention, phi losophy, history, science, the classics and a hundred things that a stndent find s iudu cl ecl in college life. De par ting from this standard to cuter other fiel cls, is not, and no sound reason will adjudge it, college joumalism. That this is t ru e in its full sense, any College j ournalist, wishing to try an experim ent, may learn. Let him send an essay on any of the first subjects we have mentioned , and to which he has devoted mnch time, to a first class magazine or to some g reat morning cbily, and at the same time, nam e nnd await a price for his matter. The answe~· he will receive in nine cases ont of ten, will convince him of his inability to snt.isfy the public's demand for energetic writing. It will show him, unless conceit blinds him, that the p11blic knows the difference between flowers and fruits, am1 again , that between these two, it is even discriminating. His a nswer will pro lnbly tell him that he has done what the reading pnblic d o-·s not i.e. confound fact with fancy: in one won1, his first experiment in this direction will Rho w him , perhaps, better than he ever knew, that the ontsid e world and those wh o cater to its demands, know precisely what, when and how mu ch they want to bny and r e:-td ; know wlw.t are and are not well (1evelopec1, pertinent arg um ents; know their relative importance when guaged by ex perience, l1y judgment and especially by hard money value. In this connection, it is well to remember that liter:-tture, in our age, abov e others, Ins become, like news, m erchandise.

"\Vben college j ournalism , as it sumetim es happens, leaves just criticism behind and seeks to be personal and insulting, it is contemptible nncl unworthy of d ecent n otice. lts aims, like the aim of education and A1nerican , christian eel u c~1ti on, should be high, noble, above li ttleness :-tnd petty tricks; it.s object shou ld be the stud ents' elevation to the worthy plane of t he best Am eri can, Christian manhood.

Before st arting from New York, 1 had read so much abo ut icebergs and the many C11countered by in-coming steamers, that I was looking out for them ai1xiously. vVe did not howev er meet any. All over the United States, I had heard a great deal said concerning Ireland and the injustice shown that country uncter its present government, and I had heard no less saicl of the good qualities and merit of the Irish people. We merely wish to tf_mch upon this subject, and shall await the opinions of some of our prominent old sturlents abroad, as to the ad visibility and opportuneness of taking action in regard to the matter.

Non jamais ses mains, en le touchant, n'ont fi·émi d'une joie anssi vive lorsqu'ell · s pressaient la main d'un ami! Cet or qu'il caresse, c'est le fruit de ses sueurs, c'est le fils de ses œuvres! Il est riche, il peut tout~ Son p ~ u voir n'a plus de borne: le roi, entourré de pourpre est moins puissant sur son trône que sur la pièce d'or qui porte son image; son effigie a plus d'rnpire que la majesté de sa personne. Mais les richesses procnrent encore des jouissanees, ' des amusements de toute espèce. Autant le pauvre est dénué cle tout bien, autitnt le riche est comblG des dons de la nature; autant la vie du pauvre est som"re et pleine de Ll ésespoir, autant celle dn riche est riante et semée de plaisirs! Quand l'hiver, de son haleine glacée, a flétri les bois et les plaines, que son voile de fi'imas a recouvert toute la nature, alors le pauvre llans sa cabane, ouverte à tons les vents, essaie en vain de r éch:1.uffer - les membres de ses enflmts déjà assez froids pmu le tombeau. embaumée, sous un ciel. d'azur, là où il règne un printemps éternel. Et puis quand l'ardente canicule reviendra embraser les airs, il Fetournera rèspirer la fraîche bise des mers, pendant que le pauvre brillera sous un ciel de feu ! Chaque jour est une fête nouvelle pour le riche. Lorsque la pauvre mère, mourante de faim, voit se fl étrir sm• son cœur, son enfant., la flenr de son âme, lui, le favori de la fortune, s'assiera avec sa famille et ses amis à la t.able d'un splendide festin. Tout s'unira pour l'enchanter: le vin coulant dans des coupes d'or, les mets les plus Euaves au goilt, les chants et ]es r is retentissant dans des salles somptueuses. A sa porte, l'attendent de brillants équipages qui l'emporteront dans des routes ombragées, en soulevant des nuages de poussière. Le soir, sous des lust.res ruisselants de lumière, aux accords d'une musique ravissante, il se mêlera aux rondes d'une danse joyeuses, ou bien il assistera aux représentations émou vantes du théatre où les charmes du clrame, la beauté des scènes le rempliront d'indéfinissables émotions.

Voilà la vie cl u riche! N'est-elle pas une chaine infinie de fêtes et de plaisirs? Qu'est-ce qui rend son exis.tence si fortunée et si digne d'envie? Ne sont-ce pas les richesses? Qu'est-ce qui a r épandu sur tous ses traits, cet air de gaîté, ce somire éternel ? Ne sont-ce pas les dchesses? Qu'est-ce qui a plongé son cœur dans un :contentement et des délices inconnues? Ne sont-ce pas les richesses? Ah! ami! ce sont les richesses; et c'est paree qu'elles ren<1ent les hommes heureux, qu'ils font tant df sacrifices pour les obtenir. Tout agit, tout s.e meut pour acquérir des trésors. Pourquoi, partout, cette ::..ctivité fi~ vrense qui s'empare de tous les hommes? Que ven lentils? des richesses. Pomquoi le labotm~ur arrose-t-il de ses sueurs le sillon qu'il trace? Pourquoi le commerçant s'emprisonne-t-il, du matin au soir, derrière son comp- • toir? Pomquoi l'homme public se prodigue-t-il sans réserve ai1x intérêts de l' état? Pour obtenir des richesses. Ces Révérendes Dames doivent se rendxe à Minneapolis pour y fonder un établissement qui s'ouvrira en Septembre prochain. Nous faisons des vœux pour cette nouvelle mission. A step forward in the battle of life is always important. The vessel safely anchored in the -harbor has the protection of the land and the ready help of many banns to assist her in oase of dangel'; once out on the deep, amid stor·ms, only ·her captain's skill can guide her, a~1cl to reach port and deliver her freight in good order, he must have studied and know the ocean over ~ hich he sails. The future is Hke the unturned page ot a book. From what has been read, one may guess what is to follow; yet how often one is deceived. The unread -portions of the volume not 'lllfrequently belie what has preceeded. Sequence and conclusions, though natural things, do not always flow in life, any more than in books, in natural order. A man knows the present ; he may argne, though not alw-ays correctly, to the future.

Firin and secure where he stands, a step forward may precipitate him into an abyss on the other side. A step forward is therefore an important thing and worthy of consideration.

The motiv es t o ad vance, to venture on untried currents and new seas, are perhaps moi·e deserving of thought than the future itself or the end proposed. U nfortnnately, in this connection, men do not always weigh motives. The boy of fifteen wi shes he was twenty -one. Why ( A hundred to one, he cannot give n solid reason, which his own j uclgment would approve ten years later. A man of twenty-five wishes he was in such and such a position? Why? l-Ie sees it from afar. Some other man occupies it to-day, occupies it well, surrounds it with becoming dignity , discharges all its obligations, gilds it perhaps with a glow of splendor. Twenty five would like the same. Yes ! the dignity, the splendor, but the obligations, the discharge of e ver multiplying dutiesthese, in his unwisdom and poverty of reflection, he has not seriously considered .

The more important the future, a man looks forward to, the more important should be his consideration, the

If a man does not always jump as far as his superiors, any how he ri ses with them , and their company adds glory to hi s humbler but d0serving, though it may be, less succe::sful efforts. Others again, with fair abilities, forget they hav e !:'yes, that the heavens are above them , not in the earth below, on which their v ision forever r ests. In general, it is well to aim high, but alway s within the possibilities.

Because weaklings, to our knowledge, have succeer1ed in difficult vlaces, it d ocs not foll o w thRt like success will cro>vn our ambition to imitate, what, by a mild nam e, may be termed their ras hn ess. Darwinism, as Darwin himself stated and expounded it, is ,spread over twelve volumes. Necessarily there is in these vohnnes a good deal of repetition, as he was ii! the habit of giving a full acoount of the processes by which he arrived at his conclu sions. To the ordinary reader the narrative part of Darwin's volumes is the most interesting. There is a natural charm about Darwin's style. It is so clear, so simple, so unaffected.

As a consequence there are very few books which treat o( scientific subjects which are so . readable. At . the same time the actual conclusions of the author occupy but a ~mall portion of the twelve volumes, and any effort made to put us in possession of the great leading · features of Darwin's teaching without the necessity of plodding through all his volumes is deserving of encouragement. As this is the first time the Bee comes from its busy hive, bearing to our reg ions the intellectual honey of Bloomington, we welcome it and shall treat it with gentlemanly courtesy. Id decet.
