Viatorians Prepare For Belize _ _ _ _ __
Meet Ed Zander
St. Francis Xavier Church, Corozal Town
V iatorian Fathers Chris Glancy and Dan Hall are preparing for a late September arrival in the Central American Country of Belize. Bishop Osmond P. Martin of the Catholic Diocese of Belize City and Belmopan invited the Viatorians to assist in the pastoral needs of his people. This new ministry is the first outside the United States since the Chicago Province began our efforts in Bogota, Colombia in 1961. Belize is a country
located just south of the Yucatan Peninsula and shares borders with Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. A former British colony, it is comprised of Creole, Mayan and Mestizo (Mayan/European descent) people, among others. English is the primary language in most areas, and Spanish is also widely spoken. Chris and Dan will be based in Corozal Town at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Mission, which includes
the church, school, rectory and business office. Corozal Town has 10,000 people. Unlike the United States system, St. Xavier is called the parish for the entire District of Corozal (a district would be similar in size to a county in the states.) This District, which is 80% Catholic, has 20 Catholic schools, and mass is celebrated once a month in each. Ed Zander has a long history with the Viatorians beginning with the home of his youth in St. Viator parish, Chicago. Ed and his two sisters graduated from St. Viator School, and Ed has fond memories of serving as an altar boy, especially getting out of class to serve at funeral masses! After he married his wife Mary Lou, they spent their first years of marriage at St. Viator parish, later moving to the suburbs.
