New Ministry Celebrated

Long-Time Viatorian Friend

Viatorians Prepare For Belize _ _ _ _ __

Meet Ed Zander

St. Francis Xavier Church, Corozal Town

V iatorian Fathers Chris Glancy and Dan Hall are preparing for a late September arrival in the Central American Country of Belize. Bishop Osmond P. Martin of the Catholic Diocese of Belize City and Belmopan invited the Viatorians to assist in the pastoral needs of his people. This new ministry is the first outside the United States since the Chicago Province began our efforts in Bogota, Colombia in 1961. Belize is a country

located just south of the Yucatan Peninsula and shares borders with Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. A former British colony, it is comprised of Creole, Mayan and Mestizo (Mayan/European descent) people, among others. English is the primary language in most areas, and Spanish is also widely spoken. Chris and Dan will be based in Corozal Town at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Mission, which includes

the church, school, rectory and business office. Corozal Town has 10,000 people. Unlike the United States system, St. Xavier is called the parish for the entire District of Corozal (a district would be similar in size to a county in the states.) This District, which is 80% Catholic, has 20 Catholic schools, and mass is celebrated once a month in each. More than 23 villages also have monthly Sunday masses in addition to the full weekend and daily mass schedule at St. Xavier. The parish has a rna jor

Fr. Hall said he is "looking forward to the challenges of this new ministry with enthusiasm." Continued on page 4

Ed Zander has a long history with the Viatorians beginning with the home of his youth in St. Viator parish, Chicago. Ed and his two sisters graduated from St. Viator School, and Ed has fond memories of serving as an altar boy, especially getting out of class to serve at funeral masses! After he married his wife Mary Lou, they spent their first years of marriage at St. Viator parish, later moving to the suburbs. The family Viatorian involvement continued when son Craig enrolled at St. Continued on page 3

From The Provincial's Perspective _____ Dear Partners in Faith,

Viator Reverend Robert M. Egan, C.S. V. Provincial

Publisher Philip J. Skeris Director of Development

Managing Editor

As I write this letter the memories of our recent Provincial Assembly are still fresh and alive. As you may know, Viatorians gather annually in August here at the Province Center in Arlington Heights for reunion and to celebrate anniversaries of vows and priesthood. This year's theme was biblical justice. What made this year's assembly so memorable was the "sending" of two Viatorians to Belize. We sang, we prayed and we blessed our brothers as they begin our ministry in this new country. It is exciting to think that Viatorian ministry has a new birth and we are all a part of it. I hope you enjoy the story. Most of all I hope you will join us in prayer for Dan and Chris as they begin their ministry in Belize.

VIATOR is published quarterly by the Clerics of St. Viator, the Viatorians, for friends, families, parishioners and alumni of Viatorian apostola tes.

Sincerely

The Clerics of St. Via tor are religious p riests and brothers sent by the Catholic Church to teach the Faith and proclaim Jesus Christ as Gosp el. In parishes, schools, and a variety of other ministries Viatorians work with Christian communities to live, deepen and celeb rate their faith.

In addition to the three cards displayed in our last issue, we wanted you to see the final two prayer cards below. Again, our selection of cards includes the following occasions:

Viatorian Sending Ceremony _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ During the Annual Provincial Assembly last month the Viatorian missionaries to Belize were provided with a heart-felt sending ceremony. Frs. Dan Hall and Chris Glancy were officially "sent" by the Chicago Province Viatorians during a

special mass concelebrated by the Provincial Council of Fathers Robert Egan, Provincial, Richard Rinn, Assistant Provincial, Robert Erickson, Treasurer I Councilor and councilors Lawrence Lentz and Thomas von Behren. The Council gave

Chris and Dan a plaque commemorating the opening of the Viatorian Foundation in Belize; a picture of Fr. Querbes, the Founder of the Viatorians, and a framed poster of St. Viator. They were asked to plant the seed of the charism of Father Querbes in the soil of

Belize. In exchange, Dan and Chris presented the Province with the Seal of Belize carved in mahogany, (the national tree of Belize) and asked for the continued prayers and support of the members of the Province.

active member of the school Booster Club, and became one of the founders of the Knight of the Lion. He and Mary Lou had many good friends among the Viatorians, including Fathers Render, Cahill, Cooney and Brother

Houde as well. To complete the circle, Ed's sister , Rita, became a BVM Sister and taught at St. Viator grade school in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ed Zander and his family's life-long support and advocacy of the Viatorians continues to

this day. Ed's reflection on this long Viatorian collaboration: "Over the years, they always give terrific homilies that speak to real life. Even though they are Pastors, they still know what's going on in families and society!" •

Viatorians Prepare for Belize (continued) role in education of district children. Catholic grade schools have 5,000 students and 180 teachers. The government of Belize provides funding for Catholic school teacher salaries, and helps with limited funds for some school construction and expansion projects. However, funds are still lacking for educational supplies, catechetical materials, completion of construction projects and other unforseen needs that may arise. As the only two priests serving in the District,

Dan and Chris will have an active and abundant ministry. Three goals have already been identified for their work: to enrich the celebration of the liturgy and the on-going formation of teachers and lay leaders, along with a stronger emphasis on the Catholic identity of schools. Fr. Hall said he is "looking forward to the challenges of this new ministry with enthusiasm." These Viatorians will replace Fr. John Schroder, a Jesuit priest who is 78 years old. The former pastor, Fr. Lazarus

Fr. Dan Hall, between the parish office and the church rectory

Augustine, serves as Chancellor of the Diocese, and is needed by the Bishop for another ministry. During July, Chris and Dan began preparations with a month-long course at a missionary program sponsored by the Maryknoll Missionaries in Oakland, California. Dan is currently improving his Spanish language skills in Cuernavaca, Mexico. They will work with Fr. Augustine for a few weeks before formally beginning this apostolate. In anticipating his

departure for Belize, Fr. Glancy said "I look forward to learning from the people of Belize another perspective on living our faith in Jesus, and to sharing what I have learned from the church in the United States." A sending ceremony by the entire Viatorian Community was held as part of the Eucharist celebrated during the Annual Assembly in August. (See details and photos on page 3.) •

Partners in Faith Provide

Points to Ponder.... ___________ We occasionally

inquiring about the use of life insurance policies as a possible gift to the Viatorians. In fact, these types of gifts can be very beneficial to the donor. In many cases, the

original purpose for which the insurance was purchased is no longer applicable. For example, a couple may have bought insurance to provide support for minor children, now married with children of their own. Or insurance obtained to defray the cost of a child's college education. These

obsolete policies can be given very simply by naming the Clerics of St. Viator (our legal name), as beneficiary and owner. Thus, a donor can make a wonderful gift without disturbing other funds and without loss of income, while also receiving income and estate tax benefits. For more information on

the personal advantages of insurance gifts in supporting the Viatorians, please call or write: 847/398-6805 Philip J. Skeris, CAHP,CFRE Office of Development Clerics of St. Viator 1212 East Euclid Avenue Arlington Heights, IL 60004

Viatorians Keep Current

Pastoring In Today's Parish _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ Three Viatorian pastors attended a continuing education conference in mid-July. Focusing on ministering to contemporary parishes, the Pastoring for Today' s Parish week-long experience in San Antonio, Texas included updates and workshops on issues such as dealing with

mission; leadership of parishes, social mission of parishes, and liturgical policies and practice, among other topics. Viatorian Fathers Bill Carpenter, Larry Lentz and Dan Nolan were the first Viatorian group to participate in these annual conferences. • (L to R): Viatorians Larry Lentz, Bill Carpenter and Dan No lan

Vocation Update

Candidate Begins Novitiate _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ Recently, the Viatorian Community was blessed with a new member to begin the Novitiate year. Doug Hudson, an affiliate for the past year, was a theology teacher, Pastoral Minister and coach at St. Viator High School, Arlington Heights, Illinois. At a special prayer service

of Initiation into Religious Life, Doug officially began his Novitiate year, and is now Brother Doug Hudson. His Novice Master is Father George Auger, C.S.V. who serves as Director of Religious Life and Spirituality for the Viatorian Province. Godspeed, Brother Doug Hudson. •
