A STUDENT LOOKS AT THE VIATORIANS A hundred years ! As time evolved, from 1831 to 1931, so, too, has the Order of the Clerics of St. Viator grown. The products of its fervent and arduous teachers are scattered over the world.

In Europe, in Manchuria, in Canada and in the United States the faithful discIples of Sl Viator labor. When we, the students of Sl Viator, contemplate the achievements of our Order whose teachers are the recipients of our highest respect, we are filled with wonder · and admira tion_ For these men have taught ·in all climes, endured all hardships, overcome inconceivable difficulties, that education, the birthright of everyone, and also, that Christ's teachings, lIl1ight be instilled into the minds and hearts of men_ Up the high,,-ay of a century we see learned and holy men coming. On March 3. 1859. in the little village of Bourbonnais tucked away from the hurried life of th e world, Monsignor LegriS was born. He was a member at ti'r ance \Vas soon sought after by

Viator, the Rev. Louis M . J. Querbes. was at L yons, Fran ce, August 25, 1793, and was baptized on th e day of his birth. H e was barely saved from a n early death by fire when a r evo lutionist bomb set fire to his home during the Reign of T error. From the age of six he had determined to make a vow of Chastity, and a few months before his Firs t H oly Communion he wrote out

the first L a tin class which was composed of three students, each Of whom be came priests, Monsignor Le· gris, Father Lesage, Father Berg e ron. Frequently could this eager little lad be seen sitting quietly' among a group of learned mim and devouring gems of knowledge as they fell from the lips of scholars.

So profound was his mind, so avid his intellec tual t hirs t that at the

fortune.

After dipping southward to Rome, he turned northward and visited Venice before crossing the border into Austria on hi s way to Munich. From Mun ich to I...Iainz, and thence by boat on the Rhine River to Cologne.

Passing through the war regions of Belgium and France, he continu ed to Paris, wh enc;:e trips to visit Versailles, Fontanbleau. and Chartres were made, Crossing th e Channel from France, Doctor Ellis landed at Folkestone in England and proceeded immediately to London. He had been joined at Paris by the R ev. E. V. Cardinal, CSV, form e r Dean of St. Viator, who has been studying in Europe for the past year. and the two made the remainder of the journey together.

Vi siting Strat ford -on-Avon. Doctor Ellis and Father Cardinal witnessed a production of "The Taming of the Shrew," presented by the Sbakespeare players.

After spending a weeI-;: in London and su rrounding England, the two sailed from Liverpool for Dublin, visitin g Limerick, Kill arney, Glengarreth , and Cork before sailing from Queenstown on the \Vhite Star Liner "Baltic" for New York.

During the eighteen months of its existence, thi s organization ha::; s uccessfully carried out a complete program of constructive social work for the Catholic youth of the Archdioc ese.
