Dear FRIENDS! The American Songbook has many interpretations, both narrow and broad. The narrow definition celebrates music composed between 1920 and 1950. This is where we begin our musical journey tonight. We feature the wide-ranging music of true masters of those decades: Arlen, Berlin, Gershwin, Rogers and Hart. All created music in response to the events happening in their world at that time. In the broader sense of the American Songbook, tonight we contribute eight new pieces composed by eight major composers of the 21st century. These new voices have also created music in response to critical issues in today’s world - brought to light through the story of Tyler Clementi - bullying and teen suicide. Tyler’s story is our story. It resonates with everyone one of us in extraordinary ways, as you will experience through this amazing music. The entire process has been absolutely transformative and affirming in so many ways. We are deeply indebted to our friend Stephen Schwartz for guiding this musical project, and to Pamela Stewart for her soul-stirring lyrics. We are also indebted to the Tyler Clementi Foundation for its support, and to the Clementi family for opening their hearts and lives by allowing us to share in their story. Of course the entire concert will shine even brighter with the presence of the brilliant artist Ann Hampton Callaway. The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus is richer for having prepared this music for you. It is our hope that this momentous world premiere will offer you a deeper understanding of your own journey. “We will walk the bridge together. It is plenty wide.”
