WELCOME! The 1952 film version of Singin’ in the Rain epitomized the height of the MGM musicals. It was light, fun, escapist entertainment. Yet underneath its veneer was a story about innovation and the pioneers who, with exuberance and a can-do spirit, propelled the film industry forward. The same ethos also contributed to the rise of Silicon Valley. The Bay Area has interesting ties to the history of Hollywood and the talkies. The movie sequences for our production were filmed in Atherton at a Beaux Arts mansion and the former home of Leon Douglass, a pioneer of sound and an innovator in the early days of motion pictures. Together with Thomas Edison, Douglas was a co-inventor of the Gramophone and later the Victrola. He was also instrumental in designing the process of moving film from hand-tinted colorization to the full-color process that later became the industry standard. As we’ve worked on the show, it’s been fun to know that we’re surrounded in part of the story’s history. Our hope is that this production brings the same exuberance and joy as both the original film and the spirit of the pioneers and innovators who forever changed Hollywood.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Jeff Gee, president Robert Sullivan, vice president Stephen Tabler, treasurer John Blatt Carrie Ridge Seth Rosenblatt Karen Schwarz

Welcome back to the Fox Theatre for the closing show of our 2017 season, Singin’ in the Rain! This season we have brought you bombastic comedy, soul-stirring music, riveting drama, and now we’ll end with our love letter to old Hollywood and one of the most beloved movie musicals of all time! It’s hard to believe, but our 2018 season is just around the cornerl, and we’ll begin with the 1957 musical theater classic, The Music Man! The summer will kick off like a great ball of fire with the hit rock-n-roll musical Million Dollar Quartet, followed by the 70s disco-era hit Saturday Night Fever. We’ll close season with Elton John and Tim Rice’s Tony Award-winning adaptation of Verdi’s AIDA. This upcoming season celebrates all that we love about the escapism of musicals—unbridled romance, thrilling dance, everlasting love, and above all else—iconic music. Whether it’s from the pen of Meredith Wilson or the Bee Gees, the musicals this season will make you groove, swoon, and maybe even strut! If you haven’t yet renewed, or are interested in joining our BBBay family as a subscriber, please stop by the lobby table today! We are forever grateful that you are part of the BBBay family, and we look forward to bringing you yet another season of incredible live musical theatre!

They began writing and performing their own satirical comic material in a group called The Revuers, which included the late Judy Holliday. They went on to collaborate with Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins on what was the first show for all of them, On the Town. They also collaborated with Bernstein on the score for Wonderful Town. They wrote the book and/or lyrics for Bells Are Ringing, Do Re Mi, Subways Are For Sleeping, Peter Pan and others with Jule Styne. They also wrote the book for Applause, the book and lyrics for On the Twentieth Century and the lyrics for The Will Rogers Follies with music by Cy Coleman, and A Doll’s Life. Rogers Follies won them six Tony Awards, and A Doll’s Life received a Tony nomination. Their many film musicals include Singin’ in the Rain, The Band Wagon, On the Town, Bells are Ringing, It’s Always Fair Weather, Good News, The Barkleys of Broadway. Their non-musicals include Auntie Mame and What a Way To Go. The Band Wagon and It’s Always Fair Weather received Academy Award nominations and, along with On The Town, won the Screen Writers Guild award. Singin’ in the Rain was recently voted one of the ten best American films ever made and, by a vote of international film critics conducted by the prestigious magazine Sight and Sound, it was ranked third among the ten best films of all time. As performers, Comden and Green appeared in On the Town and later performed in an evening at the Golden Theatre, A Party with Betty Comden & Adolph Green, comprised of material from their shows, movies, and from their act, The Revuers. In 1977 they did a new version of A Party to unanimous acclaim at the Morosco Theatre, and toured with it. A Party received an Obie Award when it was first performed. They were both members of the Council of the Dramatists Guild, have been elected to the Theatre Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and have received the Mayor of New York’s Certificate of Excellence. Betty received the Woman of the Year Award from the Alumni Association of New York University. She appeared in the films Garbo Talks and Slaves of New York, and on the stage in the Playwrights’ Horizons production of Wendy Wasserstein’s Isn’t It Romantic? Adolph appeared in the films Simon, My Favorite Year, Garbo Talks,

Lily In Love, and I Want To Go Home. Some of their bestknown songs include “Just In Time,” “The Party’s Over,” “Make Someone Happy,” “New York, New York,” “Neverland,” “It’s Love,” “Lonely Town,” and “Some Other Time.” NACIO HERB BROWN (Composer) never intended to be a composer. He was called away from his very successful real estate business in Beverly Hills to the MGM studios, in 1928, by his good friend producer Irving Thalberg. He went to MGM and collaborated with lyricist Arthur Freed on their (and MGM's) first all sound musical, Broadway Melody, which made film history. That's Entertainment, produced by Jack Haley, Jr., revived the classic song "Singin' in the Rain" and numerous other Brown-Freed smashes. ARTHUR FREED (Lyricist) produced 44 films at MGM, most of them large-scale musicals, ranging from The Wizard of Oz in 1938 to Gigi in 1958, and including Singin' in the Rain in 1952. Despite his success as a producer, he most wanted to be remembered as a writer of song lyrics, the profession that had first taken him into the film studios. His best-loved song, "Singin' in the Rain" was written in 1928 and has been featured in six different Hollywood films. His collaboration with composer Nacio Herb Brown and their partnership produced one of the most enduring catalogues in popular music. ALEX PEREZ (Director) For B B B a y, f a v o r i t e d i r e c t i n g projects include Miss Saigon (TBA Award), The Music Man, Peter Pan, and performing as Will in The Will Rogers Follies. Elsewhere, Alex has directed, choreographed, and performed at the Old Globe Theater in San
