ANTIAGEING
The Age Spot Solution
Age spots, or as they are often referred to, sun or liver spots, are brown to black macules that appear on our skin as we age, owing to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Typically, age spots appear on the most exposed areas of our skin — the back of the hand, face and décolletage — resulting in a visual disturbance in an otherwise consistent and even skin tone. Although harmless, they are perceived to be an undesirable visual clue to a women’s age.

As a result, it comes as no surprise that the 5 day old garden cress sprout forms the basis of the raw material for the production of Delentigo. The second way in which garden cress sprouts can reduce the appearance of age spots stems from the observation that they can inhibit a-MSH-induced melanin synthesis. The latter was assessed in a cell-based assay

antiageing
The Ancient Power of Dragon Fruit: Preserving Youth and Preventing Ageing Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus undatus) is a pitaya, a species of cactus. Recently, it has been dubbed the “fruit of the 21st century,” owing to its increasing popularity worldwide, attributed to its exotic tasty fruits and distinctive magnificent flowers.1,2 Originating in South America, these fruits are cultivated and grown in Israel where research has been done and their beneficial properties investigated.1–3 Its fruit juice is used to treat urinary tract infections, and dragon fruit extracts are often used as a remedy to treat cardiovascular problems such as hypertension and psychological anxiety. More recently, the Dragon Fruit’s antiproliferative benefits have been shown to promote the appearance of younger and healthier skin. Is slowing down cell proliferation the answer to antiageing?

Application Guide
Cleansing Balm Our super gentle nourishing Cleansing Balm includes shea butter rose, jasmine, mandarin and geranium, lemon oils and a blend of pure mineral collagen. This gently removes makeup and the grime of the day. After massaging into the face and neck for 1–2 minutes, it can be rinsed off with warm water. Skin will be left feeling cleansed, refreshed, incredibly soft, radiant and ready to nourish. Pure Collagen Spritz The Pure Collagen Spritz can be used on a daily basis to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. It can be spritzed over the face and neck with eyes closed, morning and evening after cleansing and before application of the Elixir. Respritz during the day as and when the skin begins to feel fatigued. Overall, the use of the Pure Collagen Spritz can be used to transform the quality of the skin and to revitalize the complexion.

ANTIAGEING
The Science of Skin Ageing As the largest organ in the body, the skin plays a vital role in protecting the body from the surrounding environment, as well as playing a crucial role in the homeostatic control of body temperatures and water content. These functions derive from the skin’s unique properties that determine its strength, flexibility, elasticity and impermeability. The human body is subjected to an oxidant/antioxidant balance; however, as we age, an imbalance occurs between the production of radicals and our natural ability to neutralize these reactive species. Ultimately, this leads to visible signs of skin ageing.

Exposure to strong UV radiation and extremes of temperature in its mountain habitat has made Edelweiss an expert in self-protection. To optimize the cosmetic performance of Edelweiss DSM created a new Edelweiss variety, Leontopodium Alpinum ‘Helvetia’, the base for its ALPAFLOR® EDELWEISS extracts. Extended in vitro assays show that these extracts stimulate key genes and proteins in the cornified envelope for optimal skin protection. Additionally ALPAFLOR® EDELWEISS rebalances UV-induced stress markers to normal levels and enhances skin’s resistance to external stress factors, preserving its natural balance for an ultimate skin sensation.

BUSINESS MATTERS
Talking Money: A Financial View of the UK Health and Beauty SECTOR
Consistent with other sectors, the UK health and beauty market has seen a pronounced shift in merger and acquisition (M&A) activity since the start of the economic recession. Unlike other sectors, however, the reduced number of deals and values in this period has largely lingered with notable deals that are few and far between.

Alloy Alloy Alloy CoppeR Copper is essential to human life, required by plants and animals alike to live. It possesses high electrical and thermal conductivity, and can be combined with other metals to create alloys with a broad range of valuable properties. Copper and these alloys, such as brass and bronze, are familiar to all, but there is one property of copper — known to ancient societies and neglected until quite recently — that may come as a surprise: copper will rapidly and completely kill bacteria, viruses and fungi on contact. It is this ‘antimicrobial’ activity that is seeing copper and its alloys tasked with protecting human health in our hospitals today. More recently, however, it has been utilized by the beauty sector, specifically for the benefits that can be obtained from its antimicrobial properties in the production process.

Olá Colombia! The global cosmetics and toiletries sector has remained vigorous during the last decade, rising from $201.94 billion in 2001 to $376.84 billion in 2010. Euromonitor estimates suggest that the industry’s progressive growth patterns will be maintained until 2014, rising from 0.6% in 2011 to a rate of 3%. Growth in the Latin American cosmetics and toiletries market has grown at higher than international average rates (9% and 6%, respectively) and Colombia, in particular, has become a key country for investing and achieving regional leadership, given its market growth dynamic, high levels of production and market access. regional report
Why Colombia? The cosmetics and cleaning products market is one of the 12 priority sectors that have been given priority by the government and private sector in Colombia. Thanks to the Program of Productive Transformation, both parties are working together to ensure that, by 2032, Colombia is recognized as world leader in the production and exportation of cosmetics, cleaning products for the home and high quality absorbents made from natural ingredients.2 Currently, the country offers an opportunity for businesses in the sector interested in installing centers for research and development, and centers for logistics and production. Perhaps one of Colombia’s greatest attractions is its
Bogotá Success Stories
Belcorp has a manufacturing plant in Bogotá from where it exports to several Latin American countries and the United States. In the last few years, the company has invested more than $25 million to expand its plant and to set up its research and development centre. In 2009 and 2010, it invested $12 million in stores around the country. Henkel has its operations base for the Andean Region in Bogotá, where it has a manufacturing plant with 464 employees. The company recently invested $1.5 million in a facility expansion from which it exports 40% of its total production to 18 countries. Yanbal, a Peruvian multinational with 40 years of experience, created 900 jobs in Bogotá. It had previously invested $10 million in the expansion of its production plant and its growth in the region.

Making Life a Little Rosier
Like all the best kept beauty secrets, the use of rose hip seed oil is deeply rooted in history and culture. For centuries, the natives of the South American Andes prized wild rose hip oil for its cosmetic ability, in particular to repair damaged skin. Here, Earthoil explains how the oil of this beautiful flower has become a much sought after component of natural perfumes, cosmetics and personal care products throughout the world.

Xilogel. The smoothest thing that ever happened to skin. ®
There’s now a new way to moisturise skin, combat wrinkles and ageing. It’s called Xilogel®. A wholly natural ingredient, extracted from tamarind seeds. The result is a cream with an extraordinary, almost sensual softness, that forms on the skin a silk- smooth protective film that is delightful to the touch. And Xilogel® is remarkably effective, as scientific tests have proved, even at concentrations as low as 0.5%. The active principle consists of polysaccharides present in tamarind seeds, and, importantly, Indena scientists are able to extract these long molecular chains leaving them fully intact. To know more about why Xilogel® is good news for women – and for men – who care about their skin, contact Indena today.
