Beauty School is in Session When a Local Teacher Gets a Whole New Look Story by Angela Blue | Photos by Franklin Fitzgerald

A

s life gets filled with roles and responsibilities (career, marriage, kids) it’s easy to focus on others and put your own needs aside. This was the case with Theresa Sullivan, a second grade teacher at Christ the King Elementary School in Norfolk. She’s been married 20 years and has two teenage daughters but says she usually spends time shopping for them and doesn’t have much time to think about style and fashion for herself. After Theresa’s daughters nominated her for a Hampton Roads Magazine Beauty Book makeover, this

Chesapeake mom explains to us that she feels like she’s been stuck with the same look for the last 10 years. Theresa wants to find a look that’s more than just “Mom” and also hopes to discover a style that’s age appropriate. “I don’t want to dress too young,” she says. “I want to be stylish and updated.” We meet an excited (and nervous) Theresa at Salon Vivace in Chesapeake, where her transformation will take place. First she has a one-on-one consultation with Elizabeth Paschall, the stylist who will be doing her hair and makeup. continued on pg. 10

Elizabeth starts with a dry cut to establish the shape and determine how the hair lays. 8

Base color is applied first and will stay on Theresa’s hair the longest to cover the gray.

Elizabeth applies lowlights and highlights while the base color is processing.

After a rinse, Elizabeth trims more to “connect the dots” from the pre-cut.

Eileen follows the natural arc of Theresa’s brow and removes the strays with hot wax.

A round brush gives Theresa’s hair more volume and eliminates the use of a flat iron.

Each morning Theresa either straightens her hair to eliminate its natural wave or uses hot rollers to give it more body. “How about instead of fighting the curl, we work with the curl that you have?” Elizabeth suggests. She explains that with the right cut and the right product, Theresa will be able to blow dry her hair and give it a nice wave in just five minutes. Theresa wants to keep the length of her hair and is delighted to hear that Elizabeth has a plan to make the appearance of her hair longer. Elizabeth starts with a dry cut to establish the shape and to soften some of the bulk. Theresa normally colors her hair herself by mixing shades of light brown and dirty blond. Elizabeth recommends keeping the blond but giving it some more dimension. “Instead of two dimensional where it’s a blond highlight and then hair and then blond, you’re starting to see more three-dimensional hair,” Elizabeth explains. “Think Jennifer Aniston.” First Elizabeth mixes a base color that’s formulated to match Theresa’s underlying tones. This color will help to cover the grays—or “unpigmented hair” as Elizabeth prefers. While this processes, Elizabeth applies highlights first and then demi-permanent lowlights so that when they fade, the hair will look more natural. After Theresa’s hair has been rinsed, Elizabeth trims some more to es10

sentially “connect the dots” from the pre-cut. Now she can get a better idea of where the layers will fall. Next Theresa is whisked off by Eileen Horowitz, an aesthetician at Salon Vivace, who waxes Theresa’s eyebrows, following her natural arc. Then she tweezes some of the strays so that the brows match. Eileen calls this the art of getting even. Once the waxing is complete, Elizabeth applies a weightless shining amplifier by Prive to Theresa’s hair to give it more control and shine and to protect against heat. Next she uses a round brush to gently pull sections of the hair and so that the heat from the blow dryer will act as a curling iron. When she’s done drying, Theresa’s hair has tremendous volume. Elizabeth calls this the “va va va voom!” Theresa smiles at her new hair in the mirror. “I’m very excited!” she exclaims. “I like that we kept the length, I like the color, and I like how she’s made it softer looking,” she says. Theresa’s eyes already stand out more from the new hairstyle and the eyebrow wax, and now it’s time for her face to stand out a little more as well. First Eileen applies a vitamin C serum moisturizer by Skintelligence to Theresa’s face. Eileen explains that it’s great for all skin types and works good for the fine lines. Next she applies a firming eye cream by Yonka to eliminate puffiness from

the eye area. The eye cream is infused with rosemary, and it only takes a dab for it to work. “It helps you to wake up instantly,” Eileen says. Next Elizabeth uses a brush to apply a medium beige whipped foundation. She explains that a sponge absorbs the product, but a brush can get in all the nooks and crannies. After that she applies an undershadow on Theresa’s lids so that the true color of the shadow will come through. Elizabeth sweeps a peachy blush across the apples of Theresa’s cheeks followed by a neutral, glittery eye shadow. “The goal is to make her eyes pop,” she notes. Theresa says that she never knows which color lipstick to wear, and for today, Elizabeth starts with a sheer lip gloss followed by a hot pink lipstick. “You can experiment with bright colors just by putting a dab,” Elizabeth says. She then applies non-latex, hypo allergenic, quick drying adhesive followed by false eyelashes. The last steps are eyeliner and mascara, which bring further attention to Theresa’s bright blue eyes. To transform this into an evening look, Elizabeth applies a clay, red-based eye shadow to Theresa’s lids to bring her eyes out even more followed by eyeliner on her bottom lids and plum lip gloss. Finally it’s time for a wardrobe change. Theresa’s typical clothing style

HR BEAUTY BOOK PAGES 2012.indd 11

is comparable to the uniforms that the kids at her school wear, she says—black or khaki pants, flat shoes and a blouse. The knowledgeable and friendly associates at Apricot Lane in Newport News have some great ideas for the style of clothing that would look best on Theresa. The floral print tunic/ dress by Sage is rich in fall colors and can be worn with or without leggings. The basic black leggings chosen for Theresa have a little shine to them to dress the look up. Since menswear is a huge trend this fall, the Vintage Havana Black Blazer adds an edgy feel. Tan booties complete this sophisticated outfit which can easily be transformed from day casual to date night. A gold cuff bracelet and gold earrings bring out some of the warm colors in Theresa’s outfit, and the purple jewel-tone ring adds a fun pop of color to complete the ensemble. Everyone in the salon cheers for Theresa as she steps out of the dressing room wearing her new clothes. “I can’t believe that’s me in the mirror,” she exclaims. As she poses for photos, her whole demeanor has changed; she has more confidence and looks younger, and the clothes help to show off her beautiful figure. “I love it,” Theresa says with a gorgeous grin. “I feel fantastic.” n B

Professional Beauty Advice from Hampton Roads Locals Who Know Best | By Kelly Jackson If you’ve got beauty questions about how to turn heads, we suggest turning to those who know best—the experts. We checked in with five of Hampton Roads’ marvelous mavens to gain expert advice on the hottest trends and how to rock ’em.

Beauty Book: Everyone would love to have a sun-kissed glow year round, but many are wary of turning the dreaded “fake-n-bake” orange. What’s the best way to avoid this? Melinda: The “fake-n-bake” orange tan is the result of applying the wrong solution to the skin. SBB offers a full range of brown-based tanning solutions, and our techs are trained to use the best one for your skin type and desired level of tan.

BB: You offer a custom full-body tan

(contour). How is this different than spray tans? Melinda: Custom full-body tans are personalized for your shape and skin type. By blending subtle tones of light and dark, we can enhance your curves and cleavage. Our technicians are trained in techniques to minimize the appearance of scars, blemishes and vitiligo. You just don’t have the precision or control with booth and spray (HVLP) tans to achieve this level of personalization.

Simran Kaur

Founder of Savarna Inc., Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Richmond 866-728-2762 www.Savarnas.com

BB: What does the process of threading involve? Simran: It involves a piece of 100 percent cotton thread. It is absolutely natural and fast, and it is a highly sanitary method to remove unwanted facial hair. BB: What are the advantages of threading versus traditional waxing or tweezing? Simran: Because threading is natural and anti-wrinkle, it is an excellent form of skin exfoliation and is better controlled to define the shape of your eyebrows or remove unwanted body hair. continued on pg. 16

Whitney Stevens

Owner of Esme, Virginia Beach 757-233-6491 www.EsmeStyle.com

BB: What are some of the trends you look forward to seeing this winter? Whitney: I crave holiday dressing! Any excuse to wear sparkle creates excitement, and this season there will be no shortage of sequins. BB: What former trends do you see going out of style in the next couple months? Whitney: The dramatic low-tohigh hems seem to be simmering down but are still in style for sure. Crazy color blocking combos are being replaced with more classic color blocking combinations that create a sharp, sassy style rather than “a look at me” effect.

BB: On what hair types does the ombre hair color trend work for best? Jessica: I recommend a hair type with texture for this particular look. Hair that has movement with some waves would be ideal. It gives that Bohemian, beachy, carefree look. BB: Any out-of-the-box trends you expect to head our way soon? Jessica: Just learning the new collection from Toni&Guy in London, I saw some amazing new style trends that will soon be coming our way—mainly in color. Pastel is going to be everywhere— purples, peaches, pinks and blues! Even blondes are taking more of an ashy, steel-ish blue tone.

BB: What are some of the hottest textures and colors to stock up on for winter? Mikasa: For the fall and winter you can never go wrong with jewel tones like emerald green, ruby red or amethyst. In addition to these hues we are seeing that a lot of designers have welcomed ‘poppy’ colors from the summer such as sea foam green and coral. Try mixing the jewel tones with a pop of color and see how in love you will be! BB: Runway trends might be a little intimidating. How would you suggest incorporating bolder trends into everyday fashion? Mikasa: As a fashion designer, our creative minds often go to war with what is cool and what is practical for the average woman. For this season a lot of our prêta-porter designers displayed an abundance of va-va-voom looks in which they added padding to hips. If you like to stay on top of what is ‘hot’ but aren’t ready to go this bold, look for garments with

a peplum waist, which is flattering to every figure for adding the right amount of curve. Remember, there is always an alternative to staying current and feeling confident. B

Pam's Picks

EYE LASH-IOUS False Lashes Don't Have to Look Fake | By Pam Hopkins, Stylist

W

hen I think of false eyelashes, I picture the Goldie Hawn days in the ’70s when celebrities wore big, gaudy renditions, but lashes today look very natural and are worn by women of all ages. Variations include full sets or individual clusters of lashes, colored lashes or those with a little glitz. You don’t need to spend a lot of money—just pick up a pair at your local drug store and have fun! Start with clean, makeup-free eyes, and try one of these options:

Full sets: Use for a thick and lush look. Customize by trimming the outer edges to fit the shape of your eye. They can also be cut into individual clusters. When applying, place glue on the seam of the lashes, then wait a few minutes for it to dry. When the glue turns a little tacky they are ready to apply to your eye. Be sure to place as close to your natural lash line as possible, starting with the outer corner.

Individual clusters: Use to fill in your own sparse lashes. When applying, put a few drops of glue on a hard surface and, using tweezers, dip the knotted end of each cluster in the glue. Wait a few minutes for the glue to get tacky then apply close to your natural lash line. n B

Pam’s tips:

• To make eyes look more round, place more lashes in the center. To make eyes look more almond-shaped, place more at the outside corners.

18

• Once you have applied your false lashes, add liquid eyeliner or eyeshadow for a finished look.

Spa La La

The Butterfly Effect

Top-of-the-Line Salon and Spa Leaves My Skin Feeling Fancy | By Anne Carey

I

’ve never considered myself a fancy girl. Of course I’ve had my share of routine haircuts—the good and the bad—and the occasional mani-pedi, but that’s the extent of my beauty experiences. So I am excited to visit Coucoon Signature Salon & Spa, which offers not only the basics such as hair and nails but a host of unfamiliar, yet exceptional services like diamond microdermabrasion, PCA peels and facials tailored to all skin types. A décor aficionado, I stand at the entrance marveling at the chandelier and sweeping cream drapes. I am awakened from my trance and invited to fill out standard forms which question my nail regimen—short, round nails and a dark fall polish—and my stubborn, sensitive skin. I swap out my jeans and floral chiffon blouse for a

20

buttery robe while a chocolate-covered strawberry and sparkling water await my arrival to the posh waiting room. A gentleman, dressed in head-totoe candy apple red with his mane channeling his inner Andy Warhol, comes in and introduces himself as Bruce Ross, co-owner of the salon. Coucoon emerged from the minds of Bruce Ross and Christopher Horne. The salon branched off from its existing all-natural hair care line under the same moniker. Though they’ve been open for a year, Horne and Ross see no disadvantages to their young salon. “We look at ourselves with no competitors,” Horne says. “We set the bar; we set the standard in this particular industry in this area.” After learning more about Coucoon’s services,

it’s time for my mani-pedi, where Penelope converts my nails from summer reds to fall plums. Next I meet with Janice for a skin consultation. We discuss my skin routine as well as the problematic areas that need her expertise. Janice concludes she will perform a Classic European facial, dermaplaning and a mild peel while eliminating fragrant moisturizers to attune to my sensitive skin. As one who would call her skin difficult, I’ve always been careful not to just douse it in any product. Candles light the rectangular room as earthy, Zen-like music echoes throughout. My facial begins with a Pevonia Botanica cleanser that leaves my skin feeling airy and minty followed by a moisturizer from the same line. In between each

cleanser-lotion application, Janice blots my face with a steamed towel using gentle, wave-like techniques. Next comes the blading; the word alone intimidates me. Janice covers my eyes with the red “bug eyes” used by faux tanners and begins lightly scraping across my face. I try not to think about the process. The initial thought of a blade brushing my skin, removing dead skin cells and peach fuzz, is quite daunting. The scraping feels more sensitive around the less cushioned areas, but it soon becomes surprisingly soothing. Following the dermaplaning Janice further cleanses my face, removing pesky blackheads, and moisturizing. After the blackhead removal, she uses an instrument reminiscent of a wand attached to a Hershey’s Kiss and wanders around my face to create a heating effect. The tool is called “high frequency,” which appears as an orange light that is a high voltage but low current treatment proven to increase circulation, eliminate toxins

and acne-causing bacteria and assist in dead skin cell exfoliation. The glorious hour-long facial leaves my skin feeling more rejuvenated than ever before. Janice creates a treatment plan using the Pevonia Botanica products and recommends a follow-up in a month. I am impressed at the genuine time spent in order to make sure I am treated well here. Employees are knowledgeable about every service offered despite their specialty. This is just one of the many extra measures Coucoon takes to create a seamless visit. “We’re trying to bestow upon the community where quality has been lacking in several industries, Ross says. “We’re in a market today where you can almost feel like you’re not appreciated as much as a dollar bill.” Coucoon strives to accomplish “more than a metamorphosis” with each visit to their salon. Not only do I leave royally pampered, but my skin has experienced a complete metamorphosis. One thing was B certain—I’d never felt this fancy.Bn
