An Adventure Awaits You By K. H. Queen

W

henever I feel the cares of the world pressing too hard, I drive down the Colonial Parkway to Coastal Virginia’s hidden gem—Yorktown. Mid summer finds me here Thursday through Saturday on my fourth sojourn of the year, ready to relax and step outside my comfort zone. I start with a visit to Auntie M’s American Cottage where artist and owner Marilyn West teaches a class on making fabric jewelry. “Do you sew?” West asks me. “Not even buttons,” I respond. What I lack in skill, West possesses in patience and teaching ability. Soon I am folding and twisting a strip of cloth, gorgeous pink and orange with hints of green, and wrapping it around a wooden dowel. Then I find myself sewing, yes Mom, sewing, white and green beads with orange thread. Thanks to West, I create a beautiful pin that I now wear often. Her shop features an eclectic variety of reclaimed art such as paintings on old cabinet doors, Americana featuring Yorktown and jewelry with inspirational or sassy sayings such as “Just do it…and then deny it.” Fish made of wine corks, cheese trays crafted from wine and liquor bottles and flowers made from reclaimed wool are just the start of what you’ll see here.

Next I’m off to step, actually paddle, out of my comfort zone again and onto a standup paddleboard on the mighty York River with Jill Pryor of Patriot Tours and Provisions. Although the expert Pryor quickly rises to her feet, I start on my knees and consider remaining there, perhaps in prayer, for the entire trip. As a sit-down kayaker, this venture violates every rule I’ve learned about keeping a low center of gravity. Squelching my instinct, I carefully stand up on this vessel that more closely resembles a surfboard than a kayak. Soon I am paddling, albeit slowly, with Pryor toward a deserted beach where she often directs paddle boarders. The York River is calm and Pryor exclaims on how much better we can see standing up. Unlike sit-down kayaking, my whole body gets a workout. My knees are shaky afterward but success feels sweet. The dinner hour finds me at Water Street Grille where Steal the Pint Night is underway. The premise is simple: order a beer from a select brewery and get the glass to take home. Along with our beer, my husband and I split a caprese—an appetizer layering tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil. Blackened tuna, cooked medium, with homemade corn chips barely beats out the crab cake sandwich, which I know from past visits is

excellent. The tuna is seasoned and cooked just right as is my husband’s seafood platter. Other favorites from past visits include avocado fries and fish tacos. The glass is a nice reminder of an excellent evening. The Shagging on the Riverwalk concert series has ended for the summer, but earlier in the season a friend and I enjoyed one of the concerts, dancing to the beat of The Main Event Band, toasting the sunset and savoring the water view.

At the York River Inn B&B, host and owner Bill Cole shows me around the grounds until I feel at home. Native pink honeysuckle, sunflowers and more lush vegetation surround the inn, which sits high on a bluff overlooking the York River. My home away from home, the President’s Room, offers a riverfront balcony, several comfy chairs and beautiful rugs. A flat screen TV and desk for my computer are tucked away behind closet doors. Cole has wine, soft drinks, Brazil nut

cookies, red velvet cupcakes and more. For breakfast, Cole serves ceviche (cooked to satisfy American tastes) with shrimp, scallops, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and lime juice, a mango-peach brown betty, his own take on caprese and his specialty—caramelized cinnamon toast. I walk off some of Cole’s breakfast throughout the historic village and Riverwalk Landing, noting shops for future visits. Then I’m off to sail with another Bill, Bill O’Donovan of Let’s Go Sail on his 32-foot sailboat, Deadline, named in honor of his long career as a newspaper reporter and editor. We motor out to the middle of the York River, and he even lets me take the wheel. Oversized sails help us to pick up maximum speed. I remain relaxed, but at the first hint of fear, O’Donovan reassures me as he does other guests that this vessel cannot tip over. O’Donovan has been sailing since boyhood, holds a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license, is a certified sailing instructor and has been sailing the York River for more than 20 years. This day, we spot an osprey nest with young about ready to fly away. Dolphins also are a common sight. O’Donovan reads the river and the wind like a newspaper—“You learn to see the wind,” he says. Ripples coming our way mean the wind is blowing toward us, he says. O’Donovan also is a compelling storyteller, describing the Battle of the Chesapeake that took place nearby. That battle led to the Siege of Yorktown, which in turn led to the end of the Revolutionary War.

Hearing about naval battles on the very water where those battles were fought brings history to life in a way that sitting in a classroom cannot. At the Watermen’s Museum, I spend time looking at boat building tools, antique boats and models as well as displays about 20th century watermen. On other trips, I have learned more history at Yorktown Battlefield and at Yorktown Victory Center (the latter still open while the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is under construction). I take my time to enjoy a walk among the shops of Riverwalk Landing. A wedding rehearsal is underway at The Freight Shed. People sit at tables enjoying ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s/Green Mountain Coffee, and Hank Viccellio is hard at work in his studio crafting fine jewelry. In the evening, Riverwalk Restaurant offers one of its many appealing events—a Seafood Boil with raw oysters, crab legs, shrimp, clams, corn, potatoes, hushpuppies, strawberry shortcake and craft beer and wine. Our table includes two couples from Williamsburg who frequent these events for a great night on the town. Saturday morning finds me at perennial Yorktown favorite the Carrot Tree, now at Riverwalk Landing. My husband loves the breakfast crepe—a French crepe with scrambled egg filling topped with hollandaise sauce and garnished with bacon. My favorite is the raspberry rugelach pastry. Yorktown Market Days is my final destination, where a variety of artists, specialty food vendors and a produce selection await. Special themed markets throughout the year offer more opportunities such as May 9 (fitness), Sept. 12 (pets), Oct. 10 (fall festival), Nov. 7 (holiday open house), Nov. 14 (harvest celebration), and Dec. 12 (toyland parade). I meander among too many booths to list them all. I watch Chef K’s cooking demonstration. I admire Sea Enchantments’ jewelry made from glass found along the water at Yorktown, watercolor paintings by Michael Kravchak, honey from Zeb’s Bees and homemade jam from Fresh Batch Jams. I end up with fresh corn, tomatoes and peppers from a local farm and sofrito (vegetable spices) from Grandma’s Gourmet Sofrito of Yorktown. When you come to the market be sure to look for Simply Panache Products for Mango Mango preserves and other products as seen on the television series Shark Tank. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, water fun, music, adventure, shopping, fine dining, history or all of the above, Yorktown awaits—ready to satisfy your senses and leave you longing to return. v

Beyond the Village

B

eyond the village of Yorktown, more adventure awaits you an easy drive away on the Colonial Parkway. New Quarter Park, on Lakeshead Drive near Williamsburg, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Whether you’re younger than the park, close in age or decades older, you can find plenty of reasons to visit. New Quarter Park offers hiking trails, a mountain bike trail, an 18hole disc golf course, a basketball court, softball field, a horseshoe pit, playgrounds, volleyball, kayaking opportunities and Segway tours. Throughout the year, organized activities include stargazing, 5k runs and walks, bird walks, wildlife mapping, walk and talk tours and archeology dig days. You can also reserve a shelter and/or a fire pit. While you’re visiting what locals call Upper York County, consider playing a round of mini golf at Pirate’s Cove,

spending a day (in season) at Water Country USA enjoying water rides or enjoying water fun any time at Great Wolf Lodge—which combines a scenic lodge with an indoor water park. Shoppers in your group will appreciate the nearby Village Shops at Kingsmill and the stores of the Marquis Shopping Center. Take your time driving the Colonial Parkway and enjoy the dogwood trees in spring, the changing colors in fall and the creek and river views any time of year. v

What’s New in Yorktown

P

art of the fun of visiting Yorktown is checking out what’s new. In the last year, Riverwalk Landing has welcomed a bookstore and a restaurant. Meantime, Yorktown Victory Center this spring opened a new building and marked the midpoint of the museum’s transformation to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. The Yorktown Bookshop opened for business on Nov. 1, 2014. The store offers a broad range of used books in excellent condition, says owner David Torres-Laboy. The books look so good that people often assume they’re brand new, Torres-Laboy says. “We are still in the process of fine-tuning our inventory and are really tailoring it to our local customers,” he says. “Over the winter, we found most of our traveling customers were keen on history. We expect more interest in popular fiction during the summer months, although we don’t really know.” Plans for summer and fall include hosting book clubs and science fiction fantasy board games, Torres-Laboy says. The Yorktown Bookshop will open early for Market Days and other Riverwalk Landing events and will stay open later for evening events such as Shagging on the Riverwalk and events at the Freight Shed, he says. Not far from the bookstore is the Carrot Tree, a longtime landmark up the hill in the village. The new Riverwalk Landing

location includes many favorites that locals and tourists remember and request such as tomato basil soup, quiches, a barbecue platter, Brunswick stew and ham biscuits. Save room for the delicious desserts including chocolate cake and, of course, carrot cake. An easy walk away—you have to walk off that cake—is the Yorktown Victory Center. The new 80,000-square-foot building opened in March. The two-story lobby includes a gift shop and a café as well as an orientation video to learn about the museum and other area attractions. The new building features a 170-seat theater where three films are shown on a rotating basis. “The Road to Yorktown” and “A Time of Revolution” focus on the pivotal 1781 Siege of Yorktown and events that led up to it—with emphasis on the perspectives and personal stories of those involved. A new film, “Liberty’s Call,” combines period images with present-day interviews to explore the American ideal of liberty from its beginnings, to the establishment of a national government and then to the present time. The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is expected to open by late 2016. v —Karen Haywood Queen
