here are different ways to join SL. Some

of us discover it by chance, others read about it in magazines; and then friends invite us to join; some of us answer the call. This was the

case of the special guest of Versus, Mikel Monk. “I became Mikel Monk ... because of a friend in

SL that invited me to the party and here I am. ” Once here, Mikel found out he that he loved going to sales events and that he loved to shop.

Eventually, Monk realized that there was only a random piece of unisex clothing and furniture

for men; and he wanted more so he set out to fulfill this challenge.

Mikel Monk

Multifaceted & More Men in SL, it can be a challenge; as we all

know it is silly to think that clothes don’t really matter.

We should all wear whatever we

want. Most people don’t take clothing seriously enough, but whether we should or not, clothes do talk to us and we make decisions based on people’s appearances.

“I decide to start a clothing line and store

called The Men’s Department, aka TMD and

my dream was born. Soon, I decided to start a monthly “TMD” event where SL avatars would find male fashion and “stuff “ for men. I wanted TMD to be an event geared to male and unisex

ginable and possible --- or almost impossible. How much fun is that! Depending on the month visitors to TMD will find clothes, shoes, acces-

sories, hair, skin, eyes furniture, homes, poses and more “.

“I DECIDE TO START A COTHING LINE AND STORE CALLED THE MENS’S DEPARTMENT, TMD, AND THE DREAM WAS BORN...” The TMD Event is open to all designers, from

well-known brands that are iconic on the grid

to those that are new designers on the cutting edge. “ There are some of the best designers on

SL here; but I’m always looking for new designers. I have found some great new stores and that’s always great!”

Yet, there is a strict rule at TMD. “All con-

tent must be original no templates are allowed. Monk has strong opinions about mesh, “Mesh has done great things for male fashion,

I think it is great and sometimes under ap-

preciated. There are many good designers that

create items for men that some people don’t

know and I love helping people find them at TMD.”

Monk offers wise words, “ Guys, if you want

Monk ofrece palabras sabias. “Chicos,si que-

reis sentiros bien con vosotros mismos, sabed

cuan importante es tener un buen aspecto. Mi

Delving into the world of Fractal Art is to en-

ter the mysterious world of basic natural laws

and rules, where rigid algorithms produce end-

less fantasy shapes, lights and colors. This type

of visual art is not common in RL but in SL, there are many unique opportunities to visit great exhibits of this type of art that are on the cutting edge in keeping up with the range of technical possibilities in SL.

A great place to start exploring the Fractal Art

world is by visiting Timamoon Art Place, where

many of the best fractal artists like Milly Sharple

show or have shown their works. Another great

place to see fractal art is to visit the original fashion lab and shop of Spyralle, where Kerryth Tarantal offers pretty clothes textured with her fractal images.

Maybe this is the reason for the appeal of re-

cursive patterns and symmetrical shapes. Look at a tree, for example: branches and leaves de-

velop following the same pattern, changing

size but always generating new elements of the same shape.

Generating simple patterns and making

them reproduce and grow into intricate shapes without losing their regularity and harmony is a difficult task. Today with the use of computers and the ability to work out complex formulas the

skills to build solid shapes some often climb up to the sky in regular, huge and full colored compositions. Ranadeep proposes mostly 2-D

each time a stunning surprise. Aurora makes

her small fractals combine in bright colored and shadowed patterns, building images that

can suggest animal or human shapes or even

abstract ones, expressing deep feelings, fantasies and dreams; she also turns her images in textures for static or animated sculptures.

Aurora, photography lover in RL, encounte-

Ultrafractal by chance in 2006 and got fascina-

ted by the opportunities they give. Although she didn’t get special mathematic education, she has been able to manage these programs

(without reading manuals, just relying on her intuition and on her creativity) to create a lot of fractal artworks so far. She started exhibi-

than 250 artworks that are displayed in his gallery. Gem prefers to create large installations

with extensive surfaces filled with natural or mechanical shaped elements that compose virtual buildings or landscapes. “ I am a bit shy

about my work, and I am hesitating to promo-

te them too much in RL. I create them mainly for my own pleasure and dreamy moods” says

Gem. “The considerable advantage of SL has been to join an existing art community and

to be able to reach an international audience,

Mac’s technical and scientific background in

RL allows him to work with the program Xaos

for Mandelbrot fractals. Eventually, Mac wrote a custom C program to optimize the resolu-

my work: thanks to SL, I was inspired to write programs that explore 3-D fractal world.”

Website developer and designer in RL, Ra-

nadeep uses a lot of programs, from Apophysis and Ultrafractal to Incendia, Chaotica, Frax and Mandelbub3D; he started showing his works in

SL in 2013. To date, he has shown 12 exhibits in the past year. Ranadeep composes mostly

2-D images whose variety in colors and shapes is always a stunning surprise. “I make fractal

art in RL as well and all my work is uploaded

in RL. I think SL offers more opportunities to be appreciated thanks to its worldwide reach of SL considering the fact that in many places

around the globe fractal art is still less known and appreciated.”

This is what these outstanding artists say

about themselves and their work. In the next

part of this article in the next Versus we’ll see how they create and how their different styles and inspiration can make fractal art opportunities countless and amazing.

better…from jeweled nails to tortoiseshell and animal prints don’t go out without them.

I t’s also time to say goodbye to big bouncy hair…and straighten up!

Wear your hair

long and straight; for variation wear an up-do that twists up and is casually disheveled.

Sweet and sleek, vintage bobs are also in style and can add another unexpected layer to your look.

ccessories

“ I think the accessories look very modern and very exciting. These big earrings, these

big hoops. I think the girls are sort of falling in love with collars, neck collars.”

Ralph Lauren

B ig, brash and bold is a way to summarize jewelry trends for the summer.

A new take

on ethnic chic is all the rage with lavish pendants worn doubled around the neck in iridescent metals that shimmer.

T his summer, think magic talismans in turquoise and coral, big chucky necklaces and

architectural chokers. As for sunglasses, go retro chic in a pair of cat –eyed sunglasses with

heavy gold accents; pair them with large gold earrings that beckon like a sartorial invitation to summer.

C rystal embellishments with

fur or feathers in the tradition of Fendi and Delettrez da-

zzle and define this summer’s ethnic look. Even earrings have a tribal aspect with shapes that look like everything from a helix and ancient coins to form free cartilage.

B racelets are big this summer, literally!

Look for bracelets that range from big and

chunky art like pieces and cuffs that go half way up your arm Athena style to opulent bracelets that give a nod to the colorful Eighties.

Trends

T

rends

This summer, orange is the new black, so dive into summer with bold colors that empower – hot pinks, bright blues, iridescent greens and a rainbow of colors that sizzle on the beach, in nightclubs and out on the town. Embellishment still holds us in thrall… watch for those flashy patterns that “razzle dazzle.” These patterns run the gamut from hard to see glimmer to all out sparkles that will light up the night…and the day too. Floral prints explode this season as if in a hothouse… they just blossom! Big bold prints are on everything from casual wear to glam. This summer, many on the grid and in RL are not only pretty in pink… but also in floral patterns. The ethno-tribal trend is one of the most interesting of the summer season adding an element of diversity and flourish to any wardrobe. So sway to the tribal beat on the beach and out on the town… and get on your “global” chic.

This Versus section shows you the best trends of summer… so take the plunge!
