The new Queen Silver Star Excellence Program committee members know the difference participating in the program can make in a young woman’s life. Queen Silver Star XXXIX CherĂŠ Tearoe Lane is the new chairman of the committee while Queen Silver Star XLVI Brittany Sjoblom is the vice-chairman. “We know what it’s like to be in the program and we want to keep the traditions while considering some changes. We’re really grateful that we will be able to call on the

retiring committee members for advice,� said Lane. Karen Humphreys, Coleen Noel and many of the other Queen’s Committee members are retiring this year with new members joining the committee. “The program gives something that the girls can’t get anywhere else,� said Noel. Lane agrees that taking part in the program changed her life as she did her community volunteer work at the Boys and Girls Club, decided she liked working with children and now works there. “Taking part in the program shows the

Many of the past royalty members help in the program. “We’ve been involved since we left and we enjoy it,â€? said Sjoblom, who graduates this year with a business degree from Okanagan College. Sandi LaFleche, Vernon Winter Carnival office manager, is pleased to see the program continue. “I’m ecstatic. Thanks to Karen and Coleen and all the other volunteers over the years and to the new committee members who will make sure that the tradition continues. We look forward to the 51st Vernon Winter Carnival next year,â€? she said. There are limited spaces in the Queen

Silver Star Excellence Program and applications should be in by May with interviews and selection done by June. If anyone has any suggestions for workshops or information they think should be included in the program or if they would like to volunteer their expertise, contact Lane at mikeandchere@shaw.ca. There will be two information sessions for young women ages 16-18 (and attending school or post-secondary education) who are interested in taking part in the program, and their families, on May 1 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and May 3 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Winter Carnival office.
