Teens relate through film in new play Morning Star Staff
At some point, every high school student wrestles with issues such as isolation, angst and peer pressure. Most find it convenient to hide behind whichever stereotype has conveniently been created for them rather than explore the tough stuff. The cheerleader. The jock. The preppie. The honour roll student. Their dreams and their fears really aren’t that far apart, though it’s easier for all of them to wear a mask than admit what a rough ride high school is, and how frightening the transition from the freedom of adolescence to the responsibilities of adulthood can be. Bugles & Blu Ray is a play that explores what happens when a group of very dissimilar high
school students meet regularly to watch and discuss movies, and how the conversation ultimately helps in breaking down the walls. Written and directed by a guy who has watched a fair share of films himself, The Aisle Seat’s own Jason Armstrong, it’s the first drama production for the students of Vernon Christian School. “We really wanted to do a production with a solid message behind it, something to tuck in your heart and take home,” said Armstrong. The cast of 11 features a lot of newcomers to the stage, as well as a handful of veterans from Armstrong’s Agape Theatre program. “The kids have been working ridiculously hard, but are having a
blast. I’m really proud of them, there are some really fine actors here,” said Armstrong. Bugles & Blu Ray is a dessert theatre production, which the director feels makes for an extra special evening for audiences. Agape’s last dessert theatre presentation, Neil Simon’s God’s Favourite, had a sold-out run in November, and Armstrong predicts that seats will be limited for this show as well. “It’s so easy to love live theatre in this format. You can invite friends of all ages, and really enjoy a great show that delivers both laughs and tears, good conversation and a delicious dessert and coffee.” Armstrong says the cast is especially proud of how the whole school is behind the event.
