New community association addresses interests RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

A Vernon neighbourhood is rallying together over common interests. About 70 residents attended a meeting of the newly formed Foothills Community Association Wednesday. “A lot more people showed up than we expected,” said Wynn Polnicky, with the association. “It shows people are interested and concerned.”

During the meeting, discussions were held with the North Okanagan Regional District over parks and tot lots. “We have no playgrounds for our kids,” said Polnicky. The other primary issue was traffic safety and that was directed towards City of Vernon staff. “There’s speeders on Silver Star Road and pedestrians are unable to cross the road,” said

Polnicky, adding that Phoenix and Foothill roads are also a concern. While part of the city, the Foothills subdivision is surrounded by regional district electoral area. Polnicky believes that has led to some disconnect between city hall and residents. “Some people mentioned the city takes our tax money but doesn’t do much for us because we’re somewhat removed,” he said.

“People sometimes feel we aren’t on the radar.” City staff informed the residents that a neighbourhood plan, which outlines land uses, is moving ahead for the Foothills. “That’s good because that means they’re paying attention to us,” said Polnicky. Polnicky believes the association will lead to Foothills residents working together. “We have volunteers

to look after areas of particular concern,” he said.

No word yet for orchardists RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

It may be some time before cashstrapped orchardists find out if government assistance is available. The B.C. Fruit Growers Association has been told by Agriculture Minister Steve Thomson that he is consulting with the provincial bureaucracy to see if a request for $10 million is possible. Joe Sardinha “He doesn’t have any solid answers for us but he says he’s taking our issues seriously,” said Joe Sardinha, BCFGA president. “There’s a process he has to go through and it could take four to six weeks.” Thomson is also being asked to file a claim with a provincial/federal insurance program.

Sardinha made the requests during a meeting with Thomson March 10 and the association had asked for a response by March 20. Growers have been hit hard by 2009 apple prices being impacted by the high value of the Canadian dollar and foreign competition. The average price for all apple varieties is 13 cents a pound while the cost of production is 22.5 cents. “A lot of growers don’t have any cash to grow this year’s crop,” said Sardinha, adding the recent warm weather has escalated the work schedule on farms. “We’re two to three weeks ahead of last year and that’s compounding the problem.” Sardinha admits that some orchardists will find it frustrating to wait for the government to consider the funding request. “It’s hard to say be patient but we have to be,” he said. “That’s the process we must deal with. Nothing happens at the drop of a hat.”
