Welcome to Williston! As a new town resident or perhaps a new business owner, Williston has much to offer. Good schools, excellent parks, a top notch library and quality municipal services combine to make Williston an attractive place to live, work and shop. Below are some facts about Williston that you may not know: • Selected as the best place to raise children by the Bloomburg Business Week publication; • Leads the state in total retail sales; • Has one of the lowest municipal tax rates in Chittenden County Williston’s long term plan articulates a vision that is designed to protect the open spaces and Village center of the Town while concentrating development in a limited area of the community. In fact, Williston has won many awards for its planning efforts. This effort is reflected in the Town’s motto: “Old town charm, new town spirit.” You’ll find your neighbors to be welcoming and we encourage you to get involved with the community. There are many opportunities depending on your interests. This includes various recreational, cultural, and social activities. — Frequently Asked Questions — Where is the seat of government in Williston?

The Williston Town Hall, which houses most of the municipal offices, is at 7900 Williston Road. It is open Monday -Friday, 830 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Town’s Web site is www.town. williston.vt.us.

Where do I go to vote?

All voting for registered voters in Williston takes place at the Williston Armory. Voting hours are 700 a.m. to 700 p.m. For more information go to the town Web site at www.town.williston.vt.us and on voting click on Town Clerk.

How do I apply for a building permit?

Call the Planning Office at 878-6704. You may want to visit the Planning Office Web site. You may also email the Town Planner or the Zoning Administrator.

When are dog licenses due and how much do they cost?

Dog licenses are due April 1. The fee is $10 for dogs that are spayed or neutered and $14 if the dog is not spayed or neutered. Proof of a current rabies vaccine is required. After April 1, the fees increase to $12 and $18.

By State Statute, ALL dogs must be licensed EACH year by April 1. Call or stop by the Williston Town Clerk’s office.

Where do I get rid of trash and recyclables?

The Drop-Off Center (1492 Redmond Road; Mon-Sat 8-330; info 872-8111) accepts up to a cubic yard of trash (for a fee) and recyclables (free!). Two transfer stations (1496 Redmond Road; and 220 Ave. B) accept larger loads of trash only. The Materials Recovery Center (357 Ave. C; Mon-Fri 6-330) accepts large loads of recyclables only. Why did the Town initiate a Stormwater Fee?

In past years, stormwater services were funded through the Town’s general fund with revenue generated through municipal taxes. As both State and Federal stormwater requirements become more onerous and the Lake Champlain cleanup effort begins, municipalities must invest more resources toward stormwater management. Accordingly, an ordinance creating a dedicated stormwater budget funded through the stormwater fee was adopted by the Selectboard in April of 2014.The stormwater bills are processed quarterly and bills must be paid by the following dates March

30, June 30, September 30 and December 30.

If you live on a town road, call the Williston Public Works office at 8781239. If you live on a state road (Williston Road or Route 2A), the state may replace your mailbox depending on the situation. Call 655-1580 for more information.

Yes, while limited supplies last. Call 8785622 and leave a message. What is a CLA?

The Common Level of Assessment of CLA represents the percentage of value that assessments in town are currently at. As the years after a re-appraisal pass the CLA will typically drop below 100 percent.

Library programs serve infants through elders. Special delivery is available for homebound residents. Williston: a brief history Information provided by the Williston Historical Society

History

eople have called the area, which is now Williston, home dating back 8,000 years. The Abenaki people lived here prior to the first European settlers who arrived in the 1700s. They tended to live along waterways such as the Winooski River, Allen Brook, and Muddy Brook. Higher elevations, such as Five Tree Hill, were used as lookouts to site herds of caribou or deer. Wetlands and ponds, such as Mud Pond and Lake Iroquois, were rich in wildlife and served as hunting grounds. European settlement began in the early 1770s. Thomas Chittenden, an early Williston settler, became Vermont’s first governor. His home was located on what is now Governor Chittenden Road. According to local legend, the Vermont State Seal illustrates the view from Chittenden’s house, which overlooked the Winooski River Valley. The original house no longer stands. Several homes he including the Giles Chittenden

built for his sons remain House in Williston. Early settlers were typically subsistence farmers. By 1830, farming became more specialized with many area farmers raising sheep to supply area woolen mills. In 1849, the railroad came to Williston. The market broadened with emphasis shifting from wool to dairy and poultry. North Williston grew and prospered because of the railroad. Located near the tracks were machine shops, grist mills, a cold storage plant, poultry warehouse, cheese factory and creamery, as well as a scheduled passenger stop. Today, Williston boasts dairy, horse, sheep, vegetable and fruit farming along with a strong commercial and industrial base. Williston’s proximity to Burlington International Airport and I-89 make it attractive to businesses. The area’s rich historical and natural resources, the town’s commitment to quality education and —8—

recreation opportunities and its diverse people make it a special place to live. To connect with the town’s history, the Williston Historical Society (WHS) sponsors a number of historical programs throughout the year. WHS sends out a twice-yearly newsletter, and sponsors field trips, research and writing on local history, the annual Fourth of July ice cream social, as well as a grant program for researchers. THE NEIGHBORHOODS St. George Road

Williston Village

Most of the homes and town buildings in the historic village district were built in the nineteenth century. The streetscape is also old: large stately trees, mature shrubs, many well tended lawns. The variety of architectural styles, including the brick Greek Revival buildings which dominate the core of the village, give stature and distinction to the district. Exceptions to this historic setting are Williston Central School, Dorothy Alling Memorial Library and the Bandstand. These add significantly to the character of the village, bringing vitality and a sense of community. Although unseen from Williston Road, playing fields behind the school and the Rec Path provide athletic and recreational opportunities for children and adults.

Meadow Run

his small neighborhood is tucked in the corner of Route 2A and Mountain View Road. In addition to Meadow Run Road, it also includes Whitewater Circle and Forest Run Road. After the entrance, which has a white fence on the left and trees on the right, the road splits. Meadow Run Road heads to the left, with Whitewater Circle going right before connecting back with Meadow Run, which extends in a tail. Forest stems off the tail. The vast majority of houses are beautiful single-story duplexes, all tan in color.

Indian Ridge

his family neighborhood centers around Isham Circle, and also contains the dead end roads Bingham and Winslow Lanes. Chamberlin Lane connects the neighborhood with Brennan Woods to the north. Hanging signs at both ends of the Isham Circle loop identify Indian Ridge. The Taft Farms Association maintains a small park for neighborhood members, with a swing, bench, basketball courts and pool. One of Williston’s two elementary schools, Allen Brook School, sits adjacent to Indian Ridge. The town has built a large recreation park at the school and the Williston Village Bike Path also runs through Indian Ridge, connecting the neighborhood to the town center. ast the shopping centers proceeding south on Route 2A, toward the small town of St. George, the area is full of crabapple trees as far as Butternut Road. To the east one can see 5-Tree Hill and to the west Brownell Mountain. The Seventh Day Adventist Church is prominent among the old homes along this road. Traveling part way, you might miss an old brick house nestled behind trees near the road that is famous for the Griswold Murder years ago. At the corner of Old Creamery Road and Route 2A are newer homes built with views west toward Burlington.

North side of Old Creamery Road

orth of Old Creamery Road are Bradley Lane, Farm View Road, Oak Knoll, Highlands Drive and Oak Hill Estates and Porterwood Drive. Bradley Lane is a wooded dirt road with lots of shade and a few homes. Another of Williston’s old brick homes called the Bradley House and Farm is on this road and dates back to 1791. Knob Hill has a few homes separated by woods and at the end of the road is a beacon that flashes red to warn incoming planes of the high altitude. Oak Knoll is its own community with many homes having views of the Sunset Hill and 5-Tree Hill hiking trail. As you travel further up this road, it dips down and there are secluded homes on wooded lots. Highlands Drive is the second highest hillside of homes south of Route 2. These are large newer homes with views of Burlington, South Burlington, Essex Junction, New York, Lake Champlain and other surrounding areas. Coming south down Interstate 89 they can clearly be seen on this hillside. Porterwood Drive is a close knit group of homes - a setting where children can play and walk, safely away from traffic. .

Finney Crossing

inney Crossing is Williston’s newest neighborhood and its largest subdivision. Located in the Taft Corners growth center, it features houses and apartments, as well as a series of walking paths and small park areas. In addition to housing, the mixed-use development includes retail and office space. The project’s developers are Snyder Companies, which built the homes, and J.L. Davis Inc., which developed the commercial part of Finney Crossing. It has been described as a key component of the town’s plan to create a pedestrian-friendly downtown.

Meadow Ridge / South Williston

his area of Williston is more rural with lots of open land and spectacular views of Mt. Mansfield, Camel’s Hump and Bolton Valley. Getting closer to Lake Iroquois, one can enjoy the scene of Mt. Pritchard and the hillside. Many homes in this area are close to the road and over 50 years old. One has a feeling of living in a quiet, safe and clean environment. There are three public trails in the area - Oak View Hill, Mud Pond and Mud Pond Country Park- for all to enjoy nature and wildlife habitat. Meadow Ridge is a newer development of homes built into the hillside off South Road with views west along the Interstate. The homes are built secluded from one another and private, yet it is a community of its own. The main roads in this area are mostly flat and enjoyed by runners and bikers.

Sunset Hill

his area is comprised of Sunset Hill Road, Five Tree Hill Road, Hassett Lane, McJay Drive, Lyman Dr., Pebble Lane, and Elk Lane, Deer Run. Aptly named, the area is graced with the most beautiful sunsets over Lake Champlain seen from Sunset Hill Road as well as a view of mountains to the east. There are many old homes along the roads with a cluster of newer homes on and just off Sunset Hill Road. Three of Williston’s oldest farms have been renovated and improved in this area - The Sutton Farm, Talcott Farm and the Merchant Farm. 5-Tree Hill public trail is off Sunset Road with a spectacular view from its high peak of Burlington to the west. These two main roads provide a square shape of about 3 miles for runners and walkers.

South Brownell Area

s you travel down Walker Hill Road toward South Brownell, the view is of Burlington, South Burlington, Adirondacks and Lake Champlain. The Lacasse Farm at the end of this road developed land in such a way that new homes are not seen but built back from the road and in wooded areas, keeping many open fields and giving the feeling of a rural area. South Brownell Road is commercial with businesses from Route 2 to Marshall Avenue and just before the Interstate bridge. Van Sicklen Road is a short road, about a mile, that connects Williston and South Burlington’s Route 116, used as a gateway to shopping centers at Taft Corners. Shunpike Road has become a shortcut from South Brownell to the mostly commercial Marshall Avenue populated with many businesses.

THE NEIGHBORHOODS

Brennan Woods

he entrance to this family neighborhood lies on the south side of Mountain View Road in the northern part of Williston. Maple trees line the entrance into the neighborhood on Brennan Woods Drive. Once inside the neighborhood, manicured lawns line the quiet, residential streets — Brennan Woods Drive, Hanon Drive, O’Neil Lane, Casey Lane, Sadler Lane and Barrett Lane. The neighborhood has its own Brennan Park, with three Little League fields, a small playground, Williston Community Gardens and parking for 40 cars. The spot has been used as a Little League field for 20 years. The southern part of Brennan Woods, where Brennan Woods Drive crests a hill and becomes Chamberlin Drive, offers views towards Taft Corners and New York’s Adirondack mountains.

River Cove Road

est of Route 2A at the River Cove Animal Hospital, a cluster of neighborhoods appears at Savage Court, Terry Lane and Palmer Court, as well as small apartment and condominium complexes on Shirley Circle and Twitchell Court. The road then quickly becomes a forested country road, passing secluded Shady Lane on the left and proceeding gently downhill to the Griswold Farm and crossing Muddy Brook to enter South Burlington.

North Williston

he neighborhood of North Williston is a large swath of forests and hills, bordered on the north and east by the Winooski River. Route 2 lines the southern portion of the neighborhood, looping eastward down French Hill towards Richmond. Gov. Chittenden Road branches off of Route 2 and bends along the Winooski, with beautiful views towards Mount Mansfield, Camels Hump, and other Green Mountain peaks. It winds its way west and uphill past the Catamount Family Center before joining with North Williston Road. The middle portion of Gov. Chittenden Road is closed in winter. North Williston Road begins in the center of Williston Village and heads due north past the Williston Country Club, farmland and newer housing developments. It then drops into a wooded ravine and past the community of Williston Woods before flattening out at the Winooski River. The area of North Williston is also known for its wideopen expanses, especially along the aptly-named Mountain View Road, which heads westward from North Williston Road towards Route 2A. At the Adams Farm Market, Old Stage Road leaves Mountain View Road heading south, passing farmland before becoming more residential as it enters the Village.

Senior Housing

illiston enjoys an abundance of housing for senior citizens. Williston Woods off North Williston Road on the way to Essex offers single family housing with its own community center and neighborhood association. In Williston Village, Whitney Hill provides congregate housing within walking distance of churches, town offices and schools. Taft Farms Senior Living off Talcott Road provides congregate housing with convenient nearby shopping and restaurants. Two large independent living senior housing facilities, Eagle Crest and Falcon Manor, are located on Blair Park Road at Taft Corners.

Southridge

Located north of Route 2 and just west of Williston Village is the neighborhood surrounding the Southridge developments. This quiet district features homes built over the past 20-years, many with views towards New York’s Adirondack Mountains. The neighborhood is conveniently located between both the Allen Brook and Williston Central schools. It also serves as a link in the Williston Bike Path.

Lamplite Acres

he Lamplite Acres neighborhood of Williston is close to much of the bustling activity of Taft Corners, but also quiet and removed as well. Surrounded by tall pines, the area encompasses quiet streets, including White Birch, Aspen, Lamplite and Pine lanes. The main route through the neighborhood is North Brownell Road, which connects between Route 2 and Industrial Avenue. Rossignol Park is at the northern end of North Brownell. The neighborhood is flanked by Routes 2 and 2A, along with Industrial Avenue, giving the area quick and convenient access to some of the major routes in and around Taft Corners.

French Hill

ast of Williston Village, beyond the Thomas Chittenden and East cemeteries, Route 2 becomes a heavily wooded winding road down French Hill to the Winooski Valley. Numerous homes nestle in the trees along the road, leading to the Sunrise neighborhood. Beyond the school, at Governor Chittenden Road, the highway quickly straightens to cross the broad open pastoral flatlands of the Winooski River on the way to Richmond.

Golf Links

riving north on North Williston Road, past the Williston Golf Course, is Golf Links: a horseshoe loop made up of two streets, Tamarack Drive and Fairway Drive. The homes on the ridge look down on the streets at the comings and goings of traffic to and from North Williston Road. Golf Links residents have the advantage of being close to the village. Their view to the west includes Burlington and the Adirondack Mountains of New York and, some days, a sliver of Lake Champlain.

Pleasant Acres

ocated on Mountain View Road near the North Williston Road intersection this neighborhood is a multi-generational neighborhood with two entrances – Pleasant Acres and Jensen Road – dotted with clotheslines, swing sets and basketball hoops. It boasts a wonderful view of a full night sky without interference, and a spectacular view of Mt. Mansfield, Bolton Valley and Camel’s Hump. Residents can take advantage of the town’s primitive path in their backyard. Across the road on the corner of Mountain View and North Williston roads was once the home of The Stovepipe School, Williston’s last one-room schoolhouse, which was moved to the village green in the 1990s, where it is preserved today and owned by the town.

Heritage Meadow

riving north from the village on Old Stage Road just before Adam’s Farm Market is Heritage Meadow. Made up of a tree-lined street – Wildflower Circle – that loops back to its entrance, the two-story multi-generational homes offer ample room between each lot and spacious back yards. The front of the neighborhood offers two large swaths of common land shared by all the neighbors and protected from further development. The homes were built in the open, flat meadow of a farm once owned by Bernard and Virginia Boyer, with the stipulation that the views to the east would not be obstructed so all could enjoy Mount Mansfield and Camel’s Hump, as well as Bolton Valley ski area. In close proximity to all the village and Taft Corners have to offer, Wildflower Circle nonetheless retains a sense of rural charm due to the large open meadow and horse farm across the road.

Williston Community & Neighborhood Parks

Williston Community Park Located behind Williston Central School, this park offers separate playgrounds for school age children and toddlers, outdoor basketball and tennis courts, four sand volleyball courts, a skate park, a soccer field, a softball field, a little league field, a Babe Ruth field, space for multipurpose fields and a lighted skating rink in the winter. The Village Bike Path runs through the park, making it an excellent destination for all kinds of recreation activities.

Parking is available near the park. Directions: Turn onto Library Lane from Williston Road, in the village. At the end of the road turn right, just before the school and bus parking area. Follow road around pine trees to end of parking lot. Entrance to the park is at the end of the parking lot. A 12-hole disc golf course is located north of the softball field.

Allen Brook Community Park Located behind Allen Brook School, this park currently has two multi-purpose fields and the Village Bike Path which connects the neighborhoods of Southridge Drive and Coyote Lane. Future expansion of this park is to include ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, playground structures and a pavilion. Parking is available in the school parking lot. Directions: 497 Talcott Rd., turn at the Fire Station on Williston Road. Entrance to the school parking lot is the next right. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 12 â&#x20AC;&#x201D;

Brennan Park & Community Gardens Located off of Mountain View Road on Brennan Woods Drive, this park has three little league fields, a playground structure for children 2-5 years old and a climbing structure for 5-12 year olds. Next to the park is the site of the Williston Community Gardens during the summer season. The Community Gardens may be accessed directly off Mountain View Road by the old barn. Parking is available at the park off Brennan Woods Drive.

Lake Iroquois Recreation District The municipalities of Hinesburg, Williston, St. George and Richmond border Lake Iroquois. The district exists for the purpose of owning, leasing, developing, maintaining and managing its property located on Lake Iroquois and vicinity, for public park, conservation and recreational purposes to serve its member communities.

The Lake Iroquois Recreation District beach area, along with its 150 acres of open land, continues to serve the district towns and all non-residents. The district lands provide access to swimming, picnicking, playground equipment and walking trails. The beach area is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and continues to be a beautiful and affordable local recreation area. Annual beach passes are available for a fee at the Town Clerk’s Office. Day passes can be purchased at the ticket

booth at the beach. Water quality sampling is done on a weekly basis.

Rossignol Park

Located at the corner of North Brownell Road and Industrial Avenue this park is a sheltered area which is great for families. Two tennis courts, a basketball court, a small picnic pavilion, little league field and a playground structure for 5-12 year olds are available. Parking is available off of Industrial Avenue.
