Celebrating our local Canada Day Although many may not know, the Guelph Canada Day celebrations were started back in 1992. One man, Chandra Khotari, an immigrant from India, who was also a fiercely proud Canadian was driving with his son one day when he was asked the question, “Dad, why do we not have fireworks in Guelph on Canada Day?” He didn’t have an answer for his son, and after giving it some thought, he believed that there should be a major Canada Day Celebration in Guelph. As a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Guelph, he approached the club to see if they would support him with this initiative. Club members thought this was a great idea and immediately got behind him. Chandra was not only a great organizer, but also a great marketer. Within weeks of this idea being approved, he was on local radio stations, TV stations, and had interviews in the local newspapers about the Inaugural Canada Day Celebration for Guelph. As a result of his effort, and the effort of the

club, this celebration had over 30,000 people in the first year, which was a larger success than anybody could have ever dreamed of. Still run by the Rotary Club of Guelph, the Canada Day celebration continues with the same strength today. Over 20 years later, the event consistently has 30,000+ people every year out to Riverside Park on July 1st for a great day of activities, fun, entertainment, and of course the fireworks. Unfortunately Chandra Khotari passed away in December of 2012. While he largely wanted to start this project for his own children so they could celebrate this great nation in their home city, I am not sure that he ever understood the lasting impact that it would have on the community. Although this will be the first Canada Day that he is not a part of since its inception, he will certainly not be forgotten this July 1st as he will be in the minds and hearts of all the Rotarians as well as many of the other patrons of Guelph as we celebrate our great nation.

The Guelph Community Foundation calls for grant applications

Located at 228 Victoria Road South, the Guelph Bibles for Missions Thrift Store supports over 20 local community organizations and provides funds for various projects in underdeveloped countries around the world. Operating within a not-for-profit organization, the Guelph store has been open for ten years. Community members can drop off all used items with the exception of appliances. Free furniture pick-up is offered in Guelph for multiple pieces. Out of town pick-up and delivery is available for a fee. The Guelph store operates with only two full-time and several part time staff. Over 135 volunteers work in all areas of the store helping in the day-to-day operations. The Bibles for Missions Foundation partners with Bible League Canada, a relationship that began more than 20 years ago, in 1989, when two Bible League supporters travelled to India to see the ministry firsthand. The overwhelming need in India shocked the two men and together they decided they had to do something to help. When they returned to Canada, with the help of some friends they started the first Bibles for Missions Thrift Store in Chilliwack, BC. With Bibles for Missions Thrift Stores soon all across Canada, the organization recently opened the 44th store in Owen Sound. Another new store is due to open in Halifax later this year. All net proceeds produced by the stores are provided to The Bible League of Canada for their mission work around the world. Of all the money generated for The Bible League of Canada 53% comes from Bibles for Missions Thrift Stores. In addition to church planting and providing Bibles, literacy programs teaching women to read in Third World countries are provided. This makes small tasks easier, such as understand-

ing signs at the market, and allows women to create large differences in their lives through advocating for themselves. Locally the store provides work for students looking to complete their 40 hours of community work and also assists with special needs programs at high schools. “If we can help an organization somehow, we will. If not we will send them to someone who can help,” says Robyn Pyrczak, General Manager of the Thrift Store. What happens when you cross good people, long term vision and sound community leadership? You get an endless stream of grants for great community programs. Endowments at The Guelph Community Foundation give back to the community for good…forever. “One core function of The Guelph Community Foundation is to build endowments, to manage those funds prudently and to work with donors to distribute them to an issue area they care about,” explains Executive Director, Andrea Olson. “Donors can choose a field of interest, a designated charity or recommend grants annually themselves – that’s a donor advised fund. Alternatively, funds can be made available for The Foundation to distribute through its Community Grants program.” The range of giving options for donors and the breadth of granting means that The Foundation can fund a broad spectrum of organizations and projects that contribute to all aspects of community well being. Two granting streams are now accepting proposals, until July 26, 2013: the Community Grants Program and the Musagetes Grant Program. The Community Grants Program–Several Foundation funds support the Community Grants program, including The Foundation’s Community Fund, to which anyone can donate any amount. A number of local businesses, families, and individuals have also set up unrestricted funds in their name to support the

Foundation’s Community Grants program. The Community Grants program has grown and benefited from a recently established endowment, the McKeough Taylor Fund. The Community Grants program accepts applications from charitable organizations that provide projects/activities in: Health and Wellness, Social Services, Arts and Culture, Children and Youth, Recreation, Education, and the Environment. For 2013, a total of approximately $50,000 is available with most grants ranging between $1,500 to $3,000. Musagetes Grant Program–The Musagetes Fund, a donor advised fund, was created in 2004 to focus on performing, visual, and literary arts excellence in our community. Since then, the fund has disbursed more than $220,000 locally. For 2013, the Musagetes Fund is particularly interested in new approaches to building community and culture. A total of approximately $50,000 is available from the Musagetes Fund Grants Program. Interested in applying to a granting program at The Foundation? Be sure to review specific eligibility criteria, project guidelines and The Foundation’s submission process, before completing an online application. Guidelines and eligibility criteria are available at www.guelphcf.ca. For more information on the types of programs funded by The Guelph Community Foundation, call 519-821-9216

New public art opportunity for artists The City will review the submitted materials by qualified applicants and develop a ranked list of prequalified candidates who will be invited to submit detailed proposals for the creation of the site-specific public art. Installation of the new work is scheduled to be completed by fall 2014. “This is an excellent opportunity for artists and an exciting first step in building a Public Art program for Guelph,” says Astero Kalogeropoulos, the City’s Arts and Culture program officer. The total budget for the project is $150,000, which was approved by City Council through the 2013 capital budget process. Complete details about the application and pre-qualification process are available at www.guelph.ca or by contacting purchasing@guelph.ca.

The artwork, which will be installed in the area bordered by Wilson, Carden, and Farquhar streets, is expected to create unity between City Hall, Market Square, Guelph Central Station and the Guelph Farmer’s Market building. “Our hope is that the artwork will reinforce the unique history of the area as the city’s primary gathering space, contribute to the animation of the space, and encourage interaction and a sense of playfulness,” says Sally Wismer, chair of the Public Art Committee.
