Setting your diet goals for 2015 Submitted by Gabrielle Allison It’s a month into the New Year and many of us have thought about goals we want to achieve, but let’s make it official and track our progress! When setting goals, avoid making them too strict and unrealistic. Firstly, ask yourself “What do I do well in my diet?” and “What am I willing to change?” Write down these thoughts including a record of your meals for a few days. This journal will help you gain an understanding of what you are doing well and help you anticipate obstacles you may encounter. Challenge yourself by trying to do one thing differently each day and record the details. New things to consider ο Add new methods to your routine, like making your own snacks. Keep it simple and build upon your success. ο Allocating time on a certain day of the week like Sundays for meal preparation is a great way to start the week, try batch cooking ο Start slow with preparing only one or two recipes for the week and as you get more comfortable you can increase the amount of preparation ο Familiarity. Start with preparing recipes that you know before moving onto new ones, and stick to one’s that make great leftovers ο Record what recipes and strategies worked and didn’t work,

as well as any obstacles so you can come up with a specific solution ο Simple tasks like washing and chopping are tasks that can be done ahead of time that save time and do not require actual cooking Choose one area that you know needs change and work on it. For example, follow the plate method: fill half your plate with vegetables 3 out of 5 days per week at dinner. Some research indicates it takes at least 21 days to form a new habit. Make your goals SMART (specific, measureable, action). Get some support Consider working with a registered Dietitian to keep you on track and give you ideas for your goal. Did you know "Nutritionist" is not a protected name? Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. Registered Dietitians are licensed professionals and are part of the protected group of Allied Health Practitioners (Medical Doctors, Dentists, etc.) Be smart about where you get your advice. College Royal is the largest university open house event of its kind in North America. Each March, the University of Guelph opens its doors to the general public in a free campus-wide open house that attracts approximately 20,000 visitors each year. For students, College Royal is also a 12-day event that includes events such as Super Thursday, a Fashion Show and the College Royal Ball. This year the open house runs on March 21 to 22, with opportunities to explore the campus buildings and see what students and professors are up to. The family friendly events include the popular livestock, cat, and dog shows, the pancake flip off, a logging competition, a square dance competition, and junior tractor rodeo. For the second year, the Great Town and Gown Chili Chow Down will have six downtown restaurants pitting their chili making chops against the folks on campus. Running on Saturday, March 21 from 12 to 2pm, patrons pay $2 for a ballot to rate the chili, the winners are announced at the end of the event, and all the money raised goes to the Guelph Food Bank. Five ways to celebrate Canada Water Week submitted by the City of Guelph Canada Water Week will be celebrated coast-to-coast starting March 16. There’s lots you can do to get in the spirit! Here are some ideas to get you started. 1. Challenge yourself to a six–minute shower! Daily 10–minute showers cost you about $95 a year (per person). A six–minute shower will cost you just $57 a year. If you use a low–flow showerhead you’ll pay even less–just $32 a year. Want more household tips? Book a free eMerge Home Visit at emergeguelph.ca and get a retrofit package plus practical tips that can turn into big savings on your water bill. 2. Learn about local water. Do you know where Guelph tap water comes from? Do you know where the Speed and Eramosa Rivers flow? Where do these rivers meet? What animals live there? Is Guelph Lake man–made or natural? Explore water in Guelph by visiting guelph.ca/water and grandriver.ca, then take a walk along the water and look for animals that live there. 3. Check for leaks at home. Slow drips can really add up. One easy way to look for leaks is to watch your water meter. Your home’s water meter is usually in your basement where water pipes enter your home. Find the ‘low flow indicator’ on the face of your meter, usually a small red or black triangle or dial. Ensure no water is being used in the home, then check to see if the indicator is turning, moving or shaking. If it is, water is flowing through the meter and you have a leak. For more tips visit guelph.ca/ourstoconserve. 4. Come out to the H2O Go! Festival. Enjoy games and workshops and win great prizes. This free, family event also includes live music, art activities, face painting, and an ecomarket! Check it out on Saturday, March 22, 10am-2pm at Old Quebec Street. 5. Enjoy a nice, tall glass of Guelph water, on–tap since 1880! Celebrate and appreciate 135 years of safe, reliable drinking water delivered right to your home.

Coleman Collection of heritage instruments housed at the GYMC There are many cultural gems at the Guelph Youth Music Centre, but one of the more recent additions is the Coleman Collection of heritage instruments. The collection represents one woman’s passion for music and musical instruments of different cultures from around the world. The late Barbara Coleman gathered the pieces over a period of several decades. Some of them were found while she was traveling abroad and others were uncovered in local antique shops in the Baden area. The collection was generously donated by the Coleman Family. Originally, the collection was permanently put on loan and displayed at the University of Guelph, so students and scholars could study them. However, due to space restrictions, they were moved to the Guelph Youth Music Centre. Instruments, like those on display at the GYMC, are still in use today in classical, popular and folk music ensembles, while others are unusual examples of handmade and one-of-akind pieces. An interactive computer provides visual information and an audio demonstration. Some of the instruments on display are African flutes, Balalaika, Concertina, Dahu,

Dulcimer, Guitar Zither, Half-tube Zither, Hurdy Gurdy, Mandolin Guitarophone, Mbria, Nyckelinarpa, Pi’Pa and Zither. The underlying theme of the collection is that these instruments were used by immigrants who settled in Canada and they either brought them from their homeland or acquired them here. This collection demonstrates the rich and diverse musical heritage that contributed to 19th and 20th century Canadian culture. The Guelph Youth Music Centre is very proud of this beautiful collection, and welcomes visitors to view, listen and enjoy the Coleman Collection of Heritage Instruments. The GYMC is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to education, enrichment and fostering the development of youth through music and the arts. This unique facility is an exciting cultural hub for children of all ages and backgrounds in the community. Through a variety of programs, provision of space to partner organizations and outreach into the community, the GYMC enriches many lives. For more information visit www.gymc.ca.

2015 Children & Youth Summer Camp Fund–now accepting grant applications The Guelph Community Foundation is now accepting grant applications for their Children & Youth Summer Camp Program. The Program provides grants to organizations operating camps that help children and youth from financially disadvantaged families participate in the summer camp experience. This grant is supported by several funds held at The Guelph Community Foundation, including the Guelph Mercury Kids to Camp Fund, Bonnie Ewen Fund, and Camp Discover Fund. If approved, grants typically range between $500 to $1,500 with a total of approximately $10,000 available for this granting program. In 2014, the Summer Camp Grant Program helped provide over 1000 children with a camp or swim experience, which in turn led to new skills, new friendships, and wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. Since The Guelph Community Foundation began granting in 2001, over $132,000 has been granted through the Children and Youth Summer Camp Program. Visit the grants schedule at www.guelphcf.ca for application guidelines and to complete a grant application form. Applications will be accepted until March 20, 2015 at 4:00pm. It's not too late to donate to the Guelph Mercury Kids-to-Camp Fund. Gifts of any size can make a big difference. For some camps, a donation of $50 will subsidize a child for one full week of camp, and a gift of $100 to $300 can send a child for an entire month. In addition to the Guelph Mercury Kids-to-Camp Fund, this program is supported by several other funds held at The Guelph Community Foundation, including The Bonnie Ewen Fund and Camp Discover. Both funds were established to ensure summer camp programs are available for disadvantaged and at-risk children and youth, now and forever.

Freemasonry: a history hidden in plain sight This travelling exhibit from the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre promotes the knowledge, appreciation and understanding of Masonic history and Freemasonry’s influenece upon our society today. Rooted in the ancient traditions of European stonemasons guilds, Freemasonry was borne out of a need to create a broth-

erhood based on ethical behaviour and coded rites of passage. This fascinating exhibit sheds light on why and how this fraternal order took root in many 19th century Ontario towns and still continues strong today. Augmenting the exhibit are photographs and documents from local Masonic orders of Wellington County. The exhibit runs at the Wellington County Museum and Archives until April 26.
