St. Joseph’s Health Centre Adult Day Program staff and participants are hoping that generous members of the community will help St. Joe’s purchase a new bus in 2014. Seniors depend on the bus to get to and from the programs safely. The programs help seniors maintain their independence and prevent premature admission to long-term care. The old bus is nearing its last days. (supplied photo)

St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation is looking for community help to get its bus back on the road before winter sets in the new year. “The bus is used to get our participants back and forth to St. Joseph’s Adult Day Program,” says Mary DuQuesnay, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation. “Without the bus, frail seniors in our community could be going without the important services they need.” The bus is a vital element in St. Joseph’s nationally recognized Adult Day Programs which each day welcome seniors who are still living in the community. At St. Joseph’s they participate in stimulating activities and enjoy the many benefits of socializing with their peers–people who remember the same things they do and who have lived and are living similar experiences. Research indicates that, given the choice, most seniors want to stay in their own homes rather than enter long-term care but modern life can make it difficult for them to maintain their independence. Not all families can be close at hand to have daily con-

tact with their elderly family members and some seniors don’t have a family at all. Family members themselves can be keeping a lot of balls in the air– the demands of work coupled with the needs of growing families–so they can’t provide care and company during the day for their aging parents or grandparents. The fear of falling on slippery sidewalks or steps can restrict seniors’ mobility and reduce their opportunities to take part in community life which, in turn, can lead to loneliness and depression, significant barriers to healthy, active living. “The St. Joseph’s bus drivers escort their passengers from the bus right to their front doors,” says DuQuesnay. “The drivers are key members of the Day Program team. They know their passengers’ names as well as their unique needs–what makes them comfortable or anxious or what makes them laugh. And the passengers have the comfort of seeing their drivers’ familiar faces every day.” If the schedule has to change to accommodate someone who needs more time to get ready, the St. Joseph’s service can give them the flexibility

their passengers need. The drivers are also there to ensure that the participants get into their homes safely and if no one answers the door in the morning as expected or if there are changes in the routine, they follow through to make sure all is okay and if it’s not, they connect with the right person who can provide appropriate help. But, according to DuQuesnay, the St. Joseph’s bus is fast approaching its final days. “Although it passed its last safety inspection we need to act now to get a new bus in place so that families dependent on St. Joseph’s Adult Day Program will be able to get their loved ones to and from this crucial service,” she says. St. Joseph’s Adult Day Programs help seniors stay active and involved–crucial factors in maintaining good physical and mental health. Participants cook, enjoy music, art and discussions together–activities that provide focus and meaning. They welcome guest speakers or share their knowledge with each other. They also participate in gentle exercise and outings into the community that keep their minds and spirits engaged.

One component of the programs is especially designed to benefit participants living with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia who still reside at home. The Adult Day Programs not only help participants stay active but they also give caregivers, many of whom are spouses, the opportunity for some respite and relief from the 24/7 demands of care. Joan Cameron’s husband Don was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2007. “As you can imagine, it presented challenges for both of us and many days were not easy,” she says. “But when Don started attending St. Joseph’s Adult Day Program–we call it the Social Club–our lives changed for the better almost right away.” Don was introduced into a stimulating social environment that presented many recreational and leisure opportunities suited to his needs and choices, she says. The program has also helped Cameron cope with the demands of care that she has shouldered. The program resource workers listen to her concerns, –continued on page 3

Multiple Will strategies for business owners by Kyle Hampson A properly drafted Will permits you to distribute your estate to your desired beneficiaries, designate a guardian for any minor children and avoid court supervision. However, those individuals who own their own businesses or participate in partnerships have the potential to face significant estate fees if their estate plan is insufficient. In Ontario, the Estate Administration Tax (“EAT”), commonly known as probate fees, is payable when the estate administrator applies to the court for a certificate of appointment of estate trustee (a “Certificate”). Not all estates require such a Certificate, but there are certain situations where a Certificate is necessary in order to distribute the assets of a Will: (i) if the deceased person owned real estate at the time of their death; (ii) if the deceased held shares in a public company or mutual funds; or (iii) if there is doubt as to what a Will provision actually means. The EAT is calculated at a rate of $5.00 per

thousand for the first $50,000.00 of the estate and $15.00 per thousand for the amount of the estate over $50,000.00. For example, for an estate valued at $60,000.00, the EAT would amount to only $400.00; but for an estate valued at $500,000.00, the EAT would be $7,000.00. A multiple Will strategy can be used to limit the EAT on certain estate assets, where the transfer does not require a Certificate. For example, a primary Will would deal with assets that will require a Certificate, such as real estate, bank accounts and investment accounts; while the secondary Will deals with assets such as personal effects, valuable private company shares and debts owing from private companies which can be transferred without obtaining a Certificate. The need for third and fourth Wills may be necessary as individuals owning professional corporations, such as doctors, dentists, veterinarians and financial advisors, have regulato-

ry restrictions on who can own shares in their professional corporation. A multiple Will strategy can ensure that their business succession plan complies with these restrictions. Every individual’s estate is unique requiring distinctive planning strategies. Careful preparation of multiple Wills is required. For instance, if one asset in the secondary Will is subject to the EAT; it can fault the entire Will, exposing all the assets within the Will to the EAT. A lawyer, often with the support of the individual’s accountant and financial planner, can help ensure that your estate will be distributed appropriately and mitigate the amount of EAT your estate will face. The first real estate search site to include school rankings and school boundaries for Canada: www.LeoBold.ca For parents who want to put their kids in the best schools in Canada, but have a frustrating time finding school boundary information, the website www.LeoBold.ca is the first and only website to combine Canadian school rankings and boundaries together on a Google Map. LeoBold Inc. has been busy digitizing school boundaries and has now released it on their website for the public to view for free. A good school is the number one factor for new parents when buying a home but there is no website that combines real estate listings, school boundaries, and rankings in one place... until now. Previously, parents had to search for model homes by driving around looking for sales centre signs. Then they would spend weeks researching and visiting individual schools. Most parents don’t

Committed and caring partnership–Wellington Catholic DSB and United Way by Brian Capovilla The mission of the United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin is to strive to meet existing and emerging social needs in order to improve lives and build community, which they have been doing for more than 70 years. Directed by a volunteer board, managed by committed staff and supported by thousands of donors, the United Way works with partners in all sectors to identify needs and raise funds to support programs in response to those needs. The vision of the Wellington Catholic District School Board is to build a vibrant community committed to the celebration of each individual by fostering a love of learning, through quality educational experiences, enabling all to respond in a Christian way to the challenges of life. Like many local businesses, we have considered this campaign a priority. It is congruent with our commitment to those in need. Many of our current and past leaders have chaired the campaign. Many others have served on campaign cabinet. In a culture of consumerism, it is critical for educators to teach humility and discernment. By providing an inclusive, accepting and welcoming environment, educators teach students to become responsible citizens, collaborative contributors, and self-directed responsible life-long

learners. All of our school communities participate in the annual United Way campaign, which teaches students the altruistic nature of giving and charity. Events such as hat days, dress down days, bubble-chewing competitions, bake sales, and so many other fun activities engage students in the life of the school thereby building community within the school but more importantly beyond the school walls. The long history of contributions has supported United Way funded agencies to improve the lives of thousands of individuals, including a positive intergenerational impact on students. It is no coincidence that this successful partnership exists considering the alignment of the United Way mission with that of Wellington Catholic. Both organizations are rooted in the value of community. We therefore urge everyone to contribute. The recipients may be family members or other neighbours in our midst. Brian Capovilla, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Wellington Catholic District School Board.

How a grass roots citizen’s movement is changing the Royal City by Gerry Barker It all started in a coffee shop between two people who shared the view that the City of Guelph was not being managed well. Exchanging views, the two sought the help of an experienced financial analyst who shared their views but had the ability to dig deep into the city’s financial management. As work proceeded, it was discovered that there were some serious problems in the city’s official annual financial statement and budget documents. This coupled with large capital spending on a $33 million organic waste processing plant and a $15 million cart collection system, added fuel to the concerns of the small but growing group of citizens. In the summer of 2012, the group formed GrassRoots Guelph (GRG) with the intent of challenging Mayor Farbridge’s administration. Work began to develop data uncovered through research and analysis into a document. It took another six months to pull the information together and have it approved by our legal counsel, who informed the group of a method to petition the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) to request an independent audit of the City of Guelph’s finances and operations. The caution was that our complaints should be well documented and contain a minimum of 50 taxpayers to sign the petition. GRG has four basic goals and it is hoping to convince more voters to vote next October. Through its website–GrassRootsGuelph.com– the organization’s key goals include control of city spending; reduction of debt, taxes and user fees; control off-campus student housing and reducing the cost of waste management. A major thrust is to encourage candidates to

run for council in 2014 and introduce policies to attract more businesses and jobs to the city. Is GRG a political organization? Yes. And it will support those candidates that are willing to bring common sense and responsible management to the city. Most important is to stabilize an administration so that all the people benefit, not just the minority special interest groups. In just over four weeks GRG collected 162 signers supporting the MMAH petition, a number that has since grown as more people join the group. Our steering group had grown to more than 20 and we launched our non-partisan nonprofit organization August 26, 2013. On October 1, 2013, the GRG petition was presented to the Ministry. In late November, the Ministry sent officials to Guelph to interview members of GRG. More discussions will be scheduled. Today, GRG has more than 300 members and is growing daily. Join GrassRoots Guelph today. Send your name, full address, email address and telephone to grassrootsguelph2014@gmail.com. New owners for central commercial property A group of local investors has purchased the former Guelph Hydro building at 104 Dawson Road. They will be represented by one of Guelph’s most prominent property management companies, Balnar Management. The Dawvale Group Inc, represented by Balnar Management, announced the close of sale on the 41,000 square foot building on Friday. by Anna Bartolomucci Respiratory etiquette and hand washing are basic measures, which prevent ongoing spread of bacteria and viruses (germs). Alone, these may not be enough to help prevent aggressive active transmission of pathogens during peak seasons of influenza and colds. There are many other precautions, which may also help in preventing the spread of germs and in protecting yourself, so you stay as healthy as possible this season. Viruses can be spread by droplets from infected people when they sneeze, blow their noses or wipe secretions from their noses or eyes. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw tissues away immediately and wash your hands. No tissue? Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands. Clean your hands often with sanitizers or soap and warm running water several times a day, and especially before eating. Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth after touching commonly used surfaces. Since germs can live on hard surfaces for up to 48 hours and soft surfaces for up to 12

hours, it is important to increase the frequency of disinfecting areas such as stainless steel, plastic, cloth, and similar objects. Remember other commonly used surface areas like, ATM machines, grocery carts or hand rails, light switches, computers, cell phones, remote controls, communal condiments, soap dispensers, faucets and door knobs. Keep alcohol-based sanitizer (gel or wipes) available at work, at home and in even in the car so you can be sure to keep your hands and surfaces as clean as possible. Stay home if you are sick or see your health care professional if symptoms become significantly worse. Along with healthy diet, increased water intake, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, these tips can help you stay as healthy as possible this cold and flu season. Money-saving advice on your mortgage renewal by Sandra Lastovic Being proactive with your mortgage renewal is the best way to ensure you get the most competitive rate possible. Your financial institution or mortgage lender will send you a renewal notice one to two months prior to the mortgage renewal. My recommendation is to seek the advice of a broker six to four months in advance. This is especially relevant in the current market place as rates are forecast to increase. Mortgage brokers work with lenders that can hold the interest rate on a mortgage for four to six months, which guarantees the rate. Once you've submitted an application we track interest rates on a weekly basis, so if rates decrease as you get closer to your mortgage renewal we can make a downward rate adjustment. Mortgage brokers work with multiple lenders so if another institution happens to have a more competitive rate, we can switch the rate hold to that institution. Your bank will not call you and suggest you go see another lender because their mortgage rate is more competitive. That's one of the benefits of working with a mortgage broker. Mortgage brokers are also motivated by different factors than banks. Both parties are in the business of making money… however mortgage brokers have the flexibility and authority locally to make the right decisions for their individual clients. When I describe the difference between brokers and banks to my clients, I term my industry as the "Walmart of the mortgage world". Let me explain… when you buy something from Walmart the product is often deeply discounted because they buy 1000's of the same product making their unit costs lower.

Walmart deals in volume, much like a mortgage broker does. Your bank branch is like a mortgage boutique. Because they may only be buying 100 mortgages per month they have to price them accordingly (normally at a higher rate, unless you beg them to give you a deal). Mortgage brokers don't have a posted mortgage rate and a discounted rate like banks do. We only work on the discounted market rates, which vary slightly. Conversely, a bank has a posted rate and they decide how much of a discount you'll get off of your mortgage. Clients benefit from using a mortgage broker because they don't need to negotiate the interest rate. When that's the case you can ensure your mortgage is set-up in the most financially beneficial way possible. You can plan for the liability enabling you to pay it off within your financial goals. Remember there's more to mortgages that just the interest rate. Getting a rate locked in by a mortgage broker four to six months before your mortgage renews will help you get the best available rate on the market. This is especially critical because we are in an increasing mortgage-rate environment. I'd love to hear your experiences on renewing your mortgage with a bank or a mortgage broker! Please e-mail me at lastovic.s@mortgagecentre.com or visit my blog at www.lastovic.s@mortgagecentre.com and offer your comments. If you're on twitter you can follow me @Sandra_lastovic

Finance Assessing investment risk by John Moran For many investors the extreme volatility of the equity markets between 2007 and 2009 (and even until today-although on a lesser degree) continues to dominate their minds and many are now looking at alternatives to either eliminate this volatility or to mitigate risk totally. This sentiment of avoiding risk at all cost has led to a major shift from equity funds into bond funds and liquid cash savings. But, with returns on bonds at historic lows and banks paying interest with minimal returns the validity of this strategy is questionable. Is it reasonable to exchange short term heightened market fluctuations for decreased long term retirement benefits? Likely not. Having stated this it appears that many individuals are willing to

Business and Personal

accept the long term loss of purchasing power as an acceptable alternative to market risk. Warren Buffet puts this into perspective when he stated that, “the risk of an investment is measured by the probability of that investment causing a loss of purchasing power over the contemplated holding period”. The real issue now seems to be that many investors are making decisions based only on this one risk factor. This is not prudent in the long term. When considering an investment strategy there are other risks to contend with-these include but are not limited to: inflation, liquidity, changes in income tax legislation, security, currency valuation and even the influence of media on the economy. These all have to be analyzed when

making investment decisions When reviewing your portfolio keep one thing in mindthere is no such thing as no risk. Don’t make your decisions on only one risk factor. When one analyzes and balances the various risks associated with a particular investment the greater the likelihood that their financial goals will be achieved. Be informed, speak to your advisor and understand the role that risk assessment has in your financial plans. John M. Experiences often play a role in decision-making by Janet Roy We are all biased because of our experiences. We like to believe we have an open mind, but these biases subconsciously play a role in our decision-making. Despite tremendous advancements in diversity in the workplace programs and leadership’s authentic desire to remove bias, studies show that the human brain is pre-wired to make quick decisions and by extension for bias. Unfortunately those biases do impact the hiring process. Most would agree that overt discrimination is easily detected, but the subtlety of bias from well-intentioned people is more elusive. Consider a manager evaluating candidates. During the evaluation process the manager selects three candidates for interview, identifying with one in particular who attended the same university. Once the process is complete, the offer is made to the candidate the manager identified with. Even if the manager felt as though the process was fair, there is a chance the hiring criteria or process was altered ever so slightly to suit the bias. Imagine a diverse pool of employees within your organization who bring together creativity, innovation, and problem solving skills that stem from their varied academic, professional, and life experiences. Why not retool to hire and lead this diverse workforce while creating a positive impact on your ROI? Acknowledge hidden biases and make them visible. Envision an objective evaluation of

The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN retains all the advantages of the pre-arranged funeral, but goes further with respect to the financial advantages. · The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN is hedge against inflation. The cost of the funeral will never increase, no matter how long it is before the funeral services are required. · Pre-payment reduces the financial demands on the survivors. Costs will be paid out of income now, rather than from much needed funds of the estate. · Like a paid-up life insurance policy, this plan is of immediate and far-reaching benefit to survivors.
