Different Styles of Artistic Design Games

The different styles of art within games are Photorealism, Exaggeration, Cell-Shading and Abstraction.

Photorealism Photorealism is used in most games that are portrayed as realistic. It is used over the over styles as it gives a more real feel to the game. It is most commonly used in games that are FPS to show detail. Some examples of games which use photorealism are Call of Duty and Battlefield. Photorealism games take more time to create as every object within games are made up of polys and pixels, yet photorealism uses a lot more then usual to create that form of detail and uses up quite a bit of disk space, this is why some photorealism games come in a double disk. However the prices of the types of games are ever rising to pay for the artists extra time and effort and for the extra detail within. But photorealism will never look real it always has the burning edge of a cartoon look. “This is a principle of robotics that addresses the emotional response we have to humanlike robots. As the realism of the machine (or game) approaches a certain point "then the non-human characteristics will be the ones that stand out" and we'll start to feel uneasy (around the robot) or detatched emotionally (from the game character). http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/14/do-gamers-really-want-photorealistic-graphics/

Exaggeration Exaggeration is used in many anime and manga style games; this form of art is used to express the images and art more then usual, it’s designed to be over the top. The reason behind using this is it makes games have a far fetched fun factor. Examples of some games that use this are Dragon Ball Z and Naruto. Most exaggeration games Japanese styled.

Cell-Shading Cell shading is used in most cartoon styled games. Most of these games will be aim for children as the cell shade uses bright colourful colours and sharp outlines to stand out. Some examples of this type of game are The Simpson’s and Pokemon.
