Meet Velma CODE. DESIGN. START. As a monthly digital magazine, Velma fills a void in the publishing industry by sharing authentic stories about the women working in technology. Many existing publications gloss over or minimize the failures and lessons which lead to success. The purpose of each Velma article is to share a personal experience at a particular stage. The goal is to nurture personal and professional growth by providing women with more diverse role models. Readers will feel less isolated and connected to a larger community of women working across all sectors in the technology field.

Women need more professional role models. A consequence of few role models narrows the measurement for success. Lack of role models leaves many women feeling like professional development is a wasted effort. And sets up many women to choose not to return to work after becoming mothers.

Many networking groups alienate women who aren’t necessarily trying to get a seat at the board room table. Many young entrepreneurial women are trying to redefine work to suit their needs. Most young women start their own business not to compete with conventional or existing businesses, but rather; to create an ability to balance life and work while doing something they’re passionate about and love.

Velma showcases all types of success (and failure) in order to inspire readers to expand their perceptions.!

Success should be defined by each individual in their own way, but at the same time we need community to tap into the confidence to navigate our own career path.

Within the design space women are excelling; taking on leadership roles and directorships. These women have a lot of important skills to pass on to their peers who may not have as smooth a career path.
