President’s Message...Cherie Wood Obamacare has hit the streets and finally the low information voter is feeling the effects of the Democrat Party's intended income redistribution "Law of the Land". As Republicans, we've known this law, if passed and upheld by the Supreme Court, would be disastrous for the average American citizen. However, the average citizen, working to meet the needs of their everyday life and oblivious to the political intentions of our leaders in Washington, simply trusted and believed the words of our President. After all, America's President is expected to be trusted; as leader of the free world and supposed to be above the type of deceit and political misdeeds that are so prevalent in third world countries throughout the world. We are the United States of America--the greatest nation on earth--the freest society in the world. Our leaders don't lie to us. Really? So where's the outrage over the abomination of the roll out of the website, the millions of insurance policy cancellations and the uncovered knowledge that the President (i.e. the White House) knew this all along? Remember the "Bush Lied-People Died" headlines when our own CIA and their sources were, indeed, lied to over Iraq's "weapon's of mass destruction"? I still think Saddam moved them to Syria but who am I to question the experts? Regardless, I know I'm speaking to the choir as I write this today. We are in this mess together as American citizens and together we must figure out a way to fix it. But telling those who chose not to educate themselves over the issue; choosing instead to believe the President--I told you so--doesn't fix the problem. Let's assume--and I know that can be a broad term--that most liberals now know the problems with the government attempting to force every American to pay for their own health insurance. Accepting this notion of personal responsibility is a conservative tenant of the Republican Party. Yet, when Democrats profess to see this responsibility carried forward, it is always on the backs of those responsible Americans, the ones with jobs and businesses and retirement savings accounts. If those Americans aren't willing to invest in the "greater good of all people" then they are the selfish, bigoted ones constantly being marginalized--especially by the liberal media. But still don't say I told you so--try to use this as a teachable moment. Educate your liberal friends and family now that the vulnerability has set in. People are always more receptive to empathy than sympathy or stupidity--at least I continue to hope so. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and to our fellow Jewish members and friends a very Happy Hanukah which began on Thanksgiving Day this year. A very Merry Christmas to all for a joyous holiday season with prayers for a peaceful and prosperous 2014.

Leadership Corner... Alice Shillock-Clark Dear ARW members, We are currently brainstorming the leadership training and development agenda for 2014. It will be held Saturday, January 18 at Spanish Trails. It entails a wealth of information for all Club officers, and members are most welcome...after all, our overall objective is to encourage more women to step up to the plate. One daunting question we are working on is why Republicans have so fewer women in office than the Dems? For example, 58 of 200 Congressional Democrats in Office are women, while only 19 of 231 Republicans in Office are women. How can we encourage/mentor more women to run for office? Another interesting fact that came out of 2012 elections is that 8 out of 10 voting women have children and are focused on issues involving children and family. We need to weave better talking points on how Republican (not Democrat) policies help women. We also need to find ways to capture single women, and younger people in general. With that in mind, Stephanie Reeder and I are working towards bringing younger women into our Club. When you meet these younger faces, it is your ARW duty to extend that arm, smile and welcome them. Tell them about what you do in ARW and why you feel strongly about being Republican. I am wide open to comments and suggestions. Email asc3@cox.net. Thank you and Merry Christmas

Literacy...Molly Governs ARW Literacy The ARW Literacy Committee offers a chance for members to spread our Republican values within our community. I would encourage anyone who has a few minutes to contact me, Molly Governs, via email for a few helpful hints on doing volunteer reading in our local schools or day care centers. My email address is mogov@mac.com. Put “ARW Literacy” in the subject heading. Your neighborhood school will most certainly have a need for guest readers. Just call their office and talk to the school’s volunteer coordinator or the principal. The ARW Literacy is always looking for donations of elementary school level books to give to needy schools in the Las Vegas Valley. Also, books of any type for our Veterans are also welcome. The books can be gently used or new. Molly Governs Literacy/MELP Chair

27th President: William Howard Taft (1909-1913) Political Party: Republican

William Howard Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1857, the son of a distinguished judge. After graduating from Yale, he returned to Cincinnati to study and practice law. The reticent politician, he preferred law over politics, but nevertheless, he entered the political arena through Republican judiciary appointments, most notably as a Federal circuit judge at the age of 34. Jurisprudence being his true passion, he aspired one day to be a Supreme Court Judge. Fate would have its way first. Taft’s ascension to the White House was due to political appointments, having never been elected to public office prior to the Presidency. President McKinley sent him to the Philippines as chief civil administrator, where he excelled in bringing vast improvements to Philippine infrastructure and civil projects. Theodore Roosevelt made him Secretary of War, and groomed him to be his successor, and won the election in 1908. Taft grew to loath the office of the Presidency, tiring of the political trappings that embattled him with progressives and conservatives alike. He did not believe in stretching the powers of the Executive office as his predecessor Roosevelt had done with impunity. During his administration Congress sent to the states a Constitutional amendment to establish a national income tax and the direct public election of Senators. Regardless of the Republican Party’s disenchantment with Taft, and Roosevelt’s departure to lead the Progressives, he was re-nominated in 1912, but lost to Woodrow Wilson. Free from the trepidation of politics, Taft left the Presidency to serve as Professor of Law at Yale until President Warren G. Harding appointed him Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a position he held until his death in 1930. To Taft, ever the reluctant President, the appointment was his greatest honor; he wrote: “I don’t remember that I ever was President.”

Caring for American Soldiers... Patricia Derrick TOYS FOR NELLIS ARW Las Vegas is conducting a "Toys for Nellis" donation drive for Nellis Air Force Base families. These toys will be welcomed at the December ARW monthly meeting at Spanish Trails. It may seem a little early but it's never too early to add this wonderful event to your Christmas list. We look forward to your toys for families of Nellis soldiers. Thank you in advance for joining us in this effort.

USO DONATIONS AT MONTHLY ARW MEETINGS ARW MEMBERS: Below is a message from USO Las Vegas to all donors and that includes each of you who have donated toiletries (small person items: toothbrushes, paste, lotion, soap etc.). Let's keep it coming. These items are greatly needed and sincerely appreciated. Bring your next donation to the October monthly meeting.

Message from Doug Bradford, Director, USO Las Vegas, McCarran Airport: Thank you very much for your 2013 contributions to USO Las Vegas. Since we opened our doors on Veterans Day in November 2010, the USO Las Vegas Center at McCarran Airport has served nearly 95,000 service members, including their dependents, and guests. The smiles on the faces of those who visit us are priceless. Many visitors comment that USO Vegas is the best USO they have ever visited. That's a testament to the Las Vegas community, our volunteers and to you, our donors who support our functions and help USO Las Vegas promote its mission of serving those who serve our country. Your donations enable the troops at McCarran International Airport to find comfort and respite in a setting that is a true "Home Away From Home". Our center is designed so those serving our country, present and past, can take a break, rest, relax and have a little fun while awaiting their next airline flight. It is a bright and welcoming facility, and our programs are tailored to meet the ever changing needs of our service men and women, as well as their families. Community support of the USO Las Vegas is vital to the success of our facility and extremely important to our military and the USO. Again, we greatly appreciate your generous gifts. Respectfully yours, Doug Bradford, Center Director, USO Las Vegas.

New ARW Reserved Table Policy The ARW board has voted to adopt a formal policy regarding reserved tables at our monthly meetings. Effective October 1, 2013 a full table can be reserved if all RSVP's are paid through our online PayPal system or a check mailed and received 2 days prior to each monthly meeting. If any member requests a reserved table of 10, all seats must be paid for in advance. I'm certain all ARW members will respect the fairness of this policy. The board feels this will allow for a more welcoming environment for our guests and new members. With that said, the board really encourages a timely RSVP to our monthly meetings and payment in advance in order to allow the staff at Spanish Trails Country Club to provide the expert service for which their establishment is well known. To do less, is to deprive them from performing at their very best. Thank you all for continuing to make Active Republican Women of Las Vegas GREAT! Cherie Wood, President

Email us at ARWLV@ymail.com Podhoretz puts his finger, I think, on the animating pulse of the Obama phenomenon - affirmative action. Not in the legal sense, of course. But certainly in the motivating sentiment behind all affirmative action laws and regulations, which are designed primarily to make white people, and especially white liberals, feel good about themselves. Unfortunately, minorities often suffer so that whites can pat themselves on the back. Liberals routinely admit minorities to schools for which they are not qualified, yet take no responsibility for the inevitable poor performance and high drop-out rates which follow. Liberals don't care if these minority students fail; liberals aren't around to witness the emotional devastation and deflated self-esteem resulting from the racist policy that is affirmative action. Yes,racist. Holding someone to a separate standard merely because of the color of his skin - that's affirmative action in a nutshell, and if that isn't racism, then nothing is.

Years from now, historians may regard the 2008 election of Barack Obama as an inscrutable and disturbing phenomenon, the result of a baffling breed of mass hysteria akin perhaps to the witch craze of the Middle Ages. How, they will wonder, did a man so devoid of professional accomplishment beguile so many into thinking he could manage the world's largest economy, direct the world's most powerful military, execute the world's most consequential job?

And that is what America did to Obama. True, Obama himself was never troubled by his lack of achievements, but why would he be? As many have noted, Obama was told he was good enough for Columbia despite undistinguished grades at Occidental; he was told he was good enough for the US Senate despite a mediocre record in Illinois ; he was told he was good enough to be president despite no record at all in the Senate. All his life, every step of the way, Obama was told he was good enough for the next step, in spite of ample evidence to the contrary.

Imagine a future historian examining Obama's pre-presidential life: ushered into and through the Ivy League, despite unremarkable grades and test scores along the way; a cushy non-job as a "community organizer;" a brief career as a state legislator devoid of legislative achievement (and in fact nearly devoid of his attention, less often did he vote "present"); and finally an unaccomplished single term in the United States Senate, the entirety of which was devoted to his presidential ambitions.

What could this breed if not the sort of empty narcissism on display every time Obama speaks? In 2008, many who agreed that he lacked executive qualifications nonetheless raved about Obama's oratory skills, intellect, and cool character. Those people – conservatives included - ought now to be deeply embarrassed.

He left no academic legacy in academia, authored no signature legislation as a legislator. And then there is the matter of his troubling associations: the white-hating,America-loathing preacher who for decades served as Obama's "spiritual mentor;" a real-life, actual terrorist who served as Obama's colleague and political sponsor. It is easy to imagine a future historian looking at it all and asking: how on Earth was such a man elected president?

The man thinks and speaks in the hoariest of clichĂŠs, and that's when he has hisTeleprompters in front of him; when the prompter is absent he can barely think or speak at all. Not one original idea has ever issued from his mouth it's all warmed-over Marxism of the kind that has failed over and over again for 100 years. (An example is his 2012 campaign speeches which are almost word for word his 2008 speeches)

Not content to wait for history, the incomparable Norman Podhoretz addressed the question recently in the Wall Street Journal: To be sure, no white candidate who had close associations with an outspoken hater of America like Jeremiah Wright and an unrepentant terrorist like Bill Ayers, would have lasted a single day. But because Mr. Obama was black, and therefore entitled in the eyes of liberal Dom to have hung out with protesters against various American injustices, even if they were 'a bit' extreme, he was given a pass. Let that sink in: Obama was given a pass - held to a lower standard - because of the color of his skin.

And what about his character? Obama is constantly blaming anything and everything else for his troubles. Bush did it; it was bad luck; I inherited this mess. Remember, he wanted the job, campaigned for the task. It is embarrassing to see a president so willing to advertise his own powerlessness, so comfortable with his own incompetence. (The other day he actually came out and said no one could have done anything to get our economy and country back on track). But really, what were we to expect? The man has never been responsible for anything, so how do we expect him to act responsibly? In short: our president is a small-minded man, with neither the temperament nor the intellect to handle his job. When you understand that, and only when you understand that, will the current erosion of liberty and prosperity make sense. It could not have gone otherwise with such an impostor in the Oval Office.

Podhoretz continues: And in any case, what did such ancient history matter when he was also so articulate and elegant and (as he himself had said) "non-threatening," all of which gave him a fighting chance to become the first black president and thereby to lay the curse of racism to rest? 13

I am a Republican because…

I believe the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.

I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability

I believe free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.

I believe government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn.

I believe the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and that the best government is that which governs least.

I believe the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people.

I believe Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.

I believe Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.

Finally, I believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
