entura County is quickly becoming a hot destination for dining. Foodies are joining the throngs of commuters chugging up the freeway from Los Angeles or down from Santa Barbara – just to sample local cuisine. One reason chefs and restaurateurs are drawn to Ventura County lies deep within the soil, via the year-round growing season that yields an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Another is the Pacific Ocean at our back door providing an array of fresh seafood. “I truly believe we’re surrounded by the best produce in the country, said Jim Rice, managing general partner of Westside Cellar and partner in upcoming Watermark/W2O Restaurant. Between the county’s cornucopia of culinary ingredients and rapidly growing international movements (such as Slow Foods) that promote eating local, seasonal products, Ventura County seems favorably poised to attract more-and-more

quality restaurants. With every new restaurant that opens, competition is born, as each must fight for its share of customers. “[Competition] is a good thing,” said Rice. “It raises the bar, and everybody has to elevate their game.” One of the first dining hotspots in Ventura County to highlight seasonal, local produce was the Ranch House in Ojai, which originally opened in 1950 as a vegetarian boarding house. Its proprietor, Alan Hooker, acknowledged by some as the “grandfather of California Cuisine,” was a passionate gardener who propagated unusual herbs and greens and used them to season his dishes. The Ranch House still operates in a similar fashion under new owners, and other Ojai restaurants – including Suzanne’s, which gets its produce from three local farmers markets weekly; Auberge, which continually updates its seasonal menu; and Maravilla, the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa’s signature restaurant – are following its lead. Restaurants in other areas of the county are also creating a buzz. Westlake Village now has places like Suki 7, a contemporary Zen lounge, Asian-themed restaurant that would have been entirely out of place in the Conejo Valley not so long ago. Safire restaurant in Camarillo puts a thoroughly modern spin on classic comfort foods. And Oxnard is now home to stellar restaurants such as Tierra Sur, located inside Herzog Wine Cellars, and La Dolce Vita in Heritage Square, which offers authentic Mediterranean and Italian Fusion. The city of Ventura has a wealth of restaurants to choose from. A few of its go-to standards are 71 Palm, which serves seasonally-inspired French-American cuisine; Jonathan’s at Peirano’s, which features a Mediterranean

menu inspired by local, seasonal ingredients purchased at the farmers’ markets; and Café Zack, a restaurant housed in a charming cottage that serves California haute cuisine centered around fresh ingredients. Perhaps the most exciting growth of all is happening in the heart of Downtown Ventura. Once forgotten buildings are getting newly polished façades, and exciting culinary options are on the horizon. Restaurant Brooks opened on Thompson almost a year ago and chef/owner Andy Brooks couldn’t be more pleased with the response he’s received proof over and indicate corrections clearly. f Downtown Ventura’s renaissance has taught us anything, it’s “first comes the movie theater, then come the restaurants. Oxnard opened Plaza Cinemas three years ago; it is now just a matter of time before the inevitable influx of upscale eateries. And as the lead instructor of Oxnard College’s Culinary Arts Program, Frank Haywood is going to be indirectly responsible for keeping them staffed. Haywood started at the college 23 years ago, and although he still lives in Santa Barbara, his observations on the nature of the food industry cross county lines. “Santa Barbara, for decades, has always had more restaurants per capita than any other city in the U.S. it seemed like, he says. “Along that State Street strip down there, they’d open and close every six months. They still do. Rents are high, everybody wants to be in the food business because it looks like fun and they got a couple of good recipes, but those are all the wrong reasons. If you don’t do your homework, there is a lot of competition out there. Continued on Page 28

know how to manage. The trend these days is there are a lot of young people coming out of these schools and they want to open their own restaurants, and

they have some good culinary schools, but nobody told them it wasn’t going to be easy out there. The food business is about the hardest business there is to get

Boccali's serves home style entrees, that are made fresh to order. The pizza dough is still hand-rolled to order, and topped with a flavorful zesty sauce, and customers can choose from a wide variety of toppings. A large garden in ojai provides summer produce, such as tomatoes, basil, eggplant, peppers, onions, and garlic, all freshly picked and used daily at both locations (when in season). Things were a bit different then but the recipes and methods have not changed one bit. Today the restaurant remains a goodfood-fast-order-at-the-counter spot. The quality of the ingredients, the time and patience put into making the sauces, preparing and shredding the meats fresh daily are what separates Bobbi’s from the rest of the crowd. The first Andria’s Seafood, named after Michael’s daughter, was a fish market on Haley Street in Santa Barbara. During this time, Mr. Wagner helped design the Ventura Fisheries Commerce Buildings in Ventura Harbor. Upon completion in 1982, Andria’s Seafood Restaurant and Fresh Fish Market opened in the beautiful Ventura Harbor. The waterfront restaurant’s heated patios make for fun and casual dining.
