The concept of cities being built from the ground up is often discussed. For some, no new city can compete with one that has stood the test of time, as the present form is a result of continuous changes. For others, newly drawn up cities incorporate the knowledge and experience gained by present ones and can so easily avoid the mistakes of the past. In any case, the issue of new cities has been providing food for thought and contemplation, particularly during recent years, when inner city problems are more pronounced than ever. This research project aims to activate this discussion centred on the example of Konstantinos Doxiadis’ “City of the Future”, while at the same time examining concurrent as well as predating and following new city models. At the same time it attempts to highlight the issues of “Utopia” and “Dystopia”, as these have been stated in the past and compare them to more contemporary views about “Ideal Cities”. By focusing on Doxiadis’ life, an attempt to gauge the impact of his own methodical approach on his body of work is made, as well as the importance of contemporary and predating architectural movements. Furthermore, reference is made on his analyses of human settlements of the past, present and future, focusing on the science of “Ekistics” and his proposals regarding the development of “dynamic settlements”, finally resulting in the worldwide city, “Ecumenopolis”. Moreover, reference is made to the crisis of Modernist movement and the emergence of the 1950s urbanism, but also to the transition from Modernists’ “CIAM” to “Delos Symposia”, which Doxiadis himself organized. Furthermore, two of his most important works – the city of Islamabad and the University of Punjab – are analysed, highlighting the present reality of those works. Finally, his role in contemporary urban planning is stated, while an attempt to compare his ideas with future cities is made. The research project ends by setting certain fundamental questions regarding the future of cities as well as the role of the contemporary architect in them.

This study attempts to redefine the importance of creating a project of this scale for Athens, proposing its creation within its center.

strategy | The study starts with the finding of the appropriate area for the installation of the program, based on multiple criteria, such as the connectivity of the area with the city networks and its potential to become a new hub for Athens. Then, an attempt is made to create the conditions for placing the program in the region, which, in this stage, is densely populated. The system that was implemented is called “defragment” and attempts to create spaces within the “innards” of the area, so that the new program can be realised.

design | Three buildings were created in the area of study, joined together at five different levels (-9.00m, -3.00m, +0.00m, +4.50m, +9.00m). These buildings are the main terminal, the hotel, which is supportive of the terminal, and the building of Greek Postal Services, which is transferred from the opposite side of Constantinoupoleos street, where it is today, freeing the space occupied for the potential creation of a park. Simultaneously, in some of the spaces vacated by the removal of the inactive buildings that were not used in the Station, there is the capacity for creating garages and other auxiliary functions for the vicinity.

The aim of the project is to create a conference center in the surroundings of the existing facilities, able to host 150 conference participants, as well as auditoriums, workshops, reading rooms and assembly areas.

strategy | The aim is to link the two main points of the area, the Monastery and the spring. Today, this is achieved through a path, around an inaccessible valley. The solution proposed is the installation of a solid volume - route to directly connect the two points. On it, through columns, two more volumes are placed, receiving the program. Finally, two auditoriums are applied to the above volumes, creating public space in between.

The building will soon launch its structure design phase and by the end of 2015 will have started being constructed.

strategy | The concept was the creation of a dark space with only five light sources, which also serve as mirrors, reflecting different frames of the area around the building. The pipes are made of MDF boards, whereas their inner part is 3M™ Radiant Mirror Film.
