Nelson’s ON THE TRACK Column Varsfontein Stud had

brought to you by an exceptional 2022/23 Varsfontein Stud season, producing the

winners of 21 stakes races. This is a testament to the quality of the breeding program and the care provided to the horses. This level of success requires a combination of careful selection of breeding pairs, excellent animal husbandry practices, and a bit of luck. It’s a great accomplishment that reflects well on the expertise and dedication of the team at Varsfontein. A special mention must go out to the magnificent 2yo’s of last season, which include Cala Muretta, Gimmeanotherchance, Golden Sickle, Guy Gibson, Lucky Lad, Main Defender, Questor and Sandringham Summit. G1 winners Lucky Lad and Sandringham Summit were both nominated for Equus Champion 2yo Colt - with the vote going to Sandringham Summit, winner of the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes and the G2 Golden Horseshoe. These are names to watch as they continue to VARSFONTEIN STUD 2022/23 - by Jeremy Nelson

develop and progress in their racing careers. They have already demonstrated talent and success at an early stage, which suggests they should have bright futures ahead. Breeding the first three past the post in the G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe was a significant accomplishment, showcasing a high level of breeding expertise and skill in producing topperforming racehorses. Sandringham Summit won from Gimmeanotherchance and Guy Gibson. This 2020 crop made a striking impression at the 2022 National Yearling Sale, as five yearlings fetched prices of a million or more. The highest priced Varsfontein yearling on the sale was Forest God (Silvano), who has yet to race. Our 3yo filly Bless My Stars was awarded the Equus Champion 3yo Filly trophy - for her victories in the G1 SA Fillies Classic and the G2 Gold Bracelet. She was also 3rd in the G1 Durban July. Our stallions won both the G2 Gauteng Guineas and the G2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas with Eye Of

2023 BREEDING SEASON Varsfontein are foaling down 120 mares over the breeding season and eagerly look forward to the arrival of the 2nd crop of Erik The Red who covered an even better book in his second season, thanks to the support of the syndicate who loved his first foals. Bred on the same male line cross as 5 times G1 winner Carry On Alice, ‘Erik’ was Cape Champion 2yo Colt in 2020, and became the first 3yo to win the G2 Cape Merchants in 22 years. Starting 2-1 favourite, and under a half-kilo sufferance, ‘Erik’ came from off the pace under an ‘oozing with confidence’ Richard Fourie, with a dashing 3/4 length victory in a time of 71,35, from the older Equus Champion Sprinter, Rio Querari. VARSFONTEIN STUD 2022/23 - by Jeremy Nelson

Erik The Red is a superb individual standing 16,1 hands, and is very reminiscent of his sire Captain Al, already the sire of sires Malmoos (Triple Crown), William Longsword (G1 Cape Guineas), Captain Of All (Equus Champion Sprinter), and G1 Met winner One World (Equus Champion Older Male). Captain Al’s success as a sire is commendable. He achieved the prestigious title of Champion Sire of 2yo’s for an impressive 8 consecutive seasons, from 2009 to 2016. In addition, Captain Al was crowned Champion SA Sire in 2015. His contributions were further recognised through receipt of the Equus Award for Outstanding Sire in 2009 and 2011. Captain Al’s statistics highlight his influence with 77% winners to runners and a 10.8% stakes winners to runners. Captain Al is the 2023 Leading Broodmare Sire in SA, R3 million ahead of his nearest rival, Jet Master. Erik The Red’s dam-sire Western Winter, is one of the best performing stallions ever to stand at stud in SA - from 823 foals he had 757 runners, 621 (82%) winners and 92 stakes winners (12,15%) - of these 23 were G1 winners and 35 G1 placed. In fact he had 25% stakes performers (190) to runners. These

are superlative statistics and are not as yet matched by any other sire to stand in SA. Erik’s family is out of the top draw with his dam Covenant winning the G1 Majorca Stakes, G2 Southern Cross Stakes, G2 Sceptre Stakes (twice), Listed Sweet Chestnut Stakes, and was 3rd in the G1 SA Fillies Sprint, G2 Southern Cross Stakes, G2 Tibouchina Stakes, and 4th in the G1 Mercury Sprint. The Secret Pact family has produced the sires Erik The Red, Master Of My Fate, Malmoos, London News, Pluck, etc. Varsfontein Stud looks forward to having Erik The Red’s first yearlings in their drafts for the 2024 sales.
