FY 2020 Annual Report - Variety St Louis

VARIETY’S VARIETY’S VISION VISION

This past year will be remembered for many things, not the least of which are the challenges we faced with the COVID-19 pandemic and how, together, we adapted to overcome them. With your support, we are fulfilling our mission differently by coming up with innovative solutions for the more than 1,100 Variety Kids we serve. These adaptations will continue into this year so that no child gets left behind. Families of children with disabilities have always felt isolated. They are often challenged with the costs of raising a child with unique needs, and this financial insecurity paired with concern for their children can be overwhelming. The pandemic only magnified their anxiety and fear. Thus, Variety St. Louis was determined to provide Variety Kids with uninterrupted access to the vital tools and services they need every day. Here is how we have responded to the challenges of a global pandemic: • When therapy sessions were canceled with the closure of schools and clinics, we partnered with an online resource to provide virtual therapy assistance. • When we realized in-person programming was not safe, we developed virtual camp and performing arts programs which allowed us to serve even more Variety Kids and ensured they stayed engaged with the world. • When a girl whose split-hand syndrome kept her from gripping her bike’s handlebars, we worked with a 3-D printer and innovative designer to build an adaptive bike. • When requests for special medical equipment never slowed down, we collaborated with vendors to assure these crucial items could be delivered safely. We are inspired daily by the resiliency and tenacity of our Variety Kids and we are proud to support them. Variety parents have said that, while so much shut down because of the pandemic, Variety was right there with them - a constant in a world that changed. Because of your generosity, families can be stronger knowing Variety is still here to ensure their children can not only dream, but that they have the tools to make those dreams come true!

Gratefully,

LARRY OTTO Board Chairman

BRIAN ROY Executive Director

SUPPORT

THAT THAT LITERALLY LITERALLY

SUPPORTS

LJ, who is six years old, is a Variety Kid who needs all the support he can get. His activity chair, funded by Variety, stabilizes his body so that typical, everyday activities are easier. With his chair, just one of his parents is able to feed him instead of both. The chair also allows LJ to do his schoolwork independently and – most important, at least to LJ – play with his toys. Your generosity also gives LJ a chance to attend Variety’s Adventure Camp. “We cried the first day I dropped him off, but that’s normal because he didn’t know anyone yet,” says Regina, LJ’s mom. “After that, he was so excited whenever we pulled up - no more crying!” “I didn’t know that people with disabilities could still participate in so many regular activities,” she continues. “LJ also met a friend at camp (Savanna), and they became inseparable!” It’s important to give children like LJ a chance to explore their world, in their own way and under their own power. Variety’s programs, including TherHappy Kids, have made this possible. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, LJ increased his strength while quarantined at home through virtual physical therapy. While enrolled in the TherHappy program, LJ’s physical therapist prescribed a gait trainer (also provided with assistance from Variety) which is used to support and strengthen him. LJ now uses it to walk and enjoy his freedom. “It makes me so happy to see him more independent!” Regina exclaims. “You can see in his face how proud he is to be able to walk again. It’s an amazing feeling to see him explore on his own!”

" It's an

" The life of a parent of a child with special needs is always changing, and you have shown that you are in this with us. " - Will's Mom

Dear Variety Friends, This has been a challenging year, but I wanted to say ‘thank you’ to all of you who support Variety. Once again, you have risen to the challenge to meet the needs of our children. When school was canceled and therapy was shut down for so many, you made the impossible, possible by offering remote therapy. Then, when it came time for camp, you again figured out a way to make it all work. You have also continued to work with the medical equipment companies to ensure that all our needs are met, even through all this. Making the impossible, possible isn’t just a catchy phrase you all thought up. You have really met the challenges to continue to serve Variety Kids. The life of a parent of a child with special needs is always changing, and you have shown that you are in this with us. Thank you again for all that you do.

Love, Sarah and Variety Teen Will Excerpts from an actual letter sent to Variety
