W h e n 1 say impacting, 1 m e a n things that have h a p p e n e d on this c a m p u s within the past four m o n t h s that have truly shaped o u r community. T h r o u g h g o i n g t o this e v e n t , and t a l k i n g to faculty, s t u d e n t s a n d a d m i n i s t r a t i o n , H o p e C o l l e g e c a m e together as o n e . America's increased involvement in Iraq has inspired the youth of America to better understand the arts and culture of the Middle East.
But most of them simply end up smoking sweet tobacco out of water pipes or wearing bathrobes. While these are small steps, they are still steps in the right direction.

T h i s b u i l d i n g also is a step in f o s t e r i n g s t u d e n t s to be g l o b a lly a w a r e , a d d r e s s i n g a n e e d o f o u r student body. 5. C I S : c a m p u s a d d r e s s e s g e n o c i d e — I n S e p t e m b e r , C I S caused s t u d e n t s to b e c o m e a w a r e o f g e n o c i d e f r o m a global perspective. T h i s led s t u d e n t s to actively t a k e a step against this i n j u s t i c e in c r e a t i n g the 1,000 W e l l s Project. 6. F i r s t P o w W o w o n c a m p u s — T h i s e v e n t in O c t o b e r w a s a b i g step in H o p e C o l l e g e a c c e p t i n g diversity. T h e P o w W o w w a s also the first in H o l l a n d , m a r k i n g a historical m o m e n t in this D u t c h C h r i s t i a n R e f o r m e d town. 7. 200 people " t o o k b a c k the n i g h t " — R e c o r d amount of s t u d e n t s , faculty, staff a n d a d m i n i s t r a t i o n a t t e n d e d the annual e v e n t against e n d i n g sexual assault. 8. N a t i o n a l S o r o r i t y — T h e s i m p l e s u g g e s t i o n o f a national sorority is a bold m o v e in r e s p e c t s to c h a l l e n g i n g H o p e tradition. T h e w h o l e p r o c e s s is p u s i n g H o p e to c o n s i d e r r e - e v a l u a t i n g the definition o f t h e c o l l e g e ' s m i s s i o n s t a t e m e n t . 9 . O p e n i n g o f D e V o s — I ' m g o i n g to be h o n e s t w h e n I say that the N o v e m b e r o p e n i n g o f the DeVos F i e l d h o u s e h a s n ' t f a z e d me. But I a s s u m e it's a big step for H o p e c o n s i d e r i n g that we spent S22 million on the project. 10. W i n n i e t h e P o o h c a m e t o c a m p u s — T h e p u r c h a s e o f D e a n M a r a n o ' s ( ' 0 9 ) W i n n i e the Pooh c o s t u m e has b r o u g h t s p o n t a n e i t y and laughter t o c a m p u s a s he has m a d e r a n d o m a p p e a r a n c e s at H o p e e v e n t s in full W i n n i e the Pooh attire. T h i s is m y list o f top ten m o s t i m p a c t i n g events. M a y b e you agree. M a y b e y o u d o n ' t . R e g a r d l e s s , w h e n I look at this list, 1 see s o m e t h i n g .
