Academic Dean Reveals New Faculty Selections Dean for Academic Affairs Morrette R i d e r h a s a n n o u n c e d a p a r tial list of new f a c u l t y m e m b e r s f o r next y e a r ' s H o p e C o l l e g e staff. Including a d d i t i o n s o n l y to those d e p a r t m e n t s which h a v e c o m p l e t e d full s t a f f i n g f o r next y e a r , t h e D e a n a n n o u n c e d the a p p o i n t m e n t of 13 new f a c u l t y members, four returning professors a n d three part-time instruct o r s w h o h a v e b e c o m e full-time faculty members. S t u d e n t s h a v e p r o t e s t e d t h r o u g h the cent u r i e s , on a n d off the c a m p u s , f o r g o o d a n d f o r b a d c a u s e s , for a n d against freedom. However, there s e e m s to h a v e been a n i n c r e a s e in the u n r e s t on the c a m p u s e s t h r o u g h o u t t h e last few y e a r s , p a r t i c u l a r l y w i t h the b l a c k protest a n d black student movements.

T h i s is n o t s a y i n g we s h o u l d n o t s t u d y E n g l i s h l i t e r a t u r e , G e r m a n hist o r y o r b i o l o g y . But, within the e d u c a t i o n a l setting, the f r e e d o m to l e a r n a b o u t o u r s e l v e s m u s t b e present.

" W H A T D O E S T H E b l a c k stud e n t w a n t ? " " W h y d o e s he c o n tinue to c o n f r o n t the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n ? " " W h y d o e s he g o to a pred o m i n a n t l y white s c h o o l a n y w a y ? " These are questions that the i n s t i t u t i o n s are a s k i n g . T h e demands of b l a c k s t u d e n t s in m a n y cases g o b e y o n d t h e b o u n d s of w h a t c o l l e g e a d m i n i s t r a t o r s might consider good sense, m a i n ly b e c a u s e t h e i r c o n c e p t of e d u c a tion is o n l y reflective of their cultural values.

BASICALLY, B L A C K students a r e interested in a q u a l i t y e d u c a t i o n . When a b l a c k c h o o s e s to g o to the p r e d o m i n a n t l y white college, he d o e s n o t g o t h e r e w i t h the i n t e n t i o n of c h a n g i n g it o r of p r o d u c i n g new p a t t e r n s in a n y sense. H e g o e s t h e r e f o r a n " e d ucation." The things that come a b o u t a n d t u r n h i m o n while h e is there a r e the s o c i a l a n d a c a d emic e x p e r i e n c e s he g o e s t h r o u g h . A n d let m e tell y o u , in s o m e w a y s they a r e not s a t i s f y i n g experiences. T h u s , b l a c k s b e g i n to att e m p t to d e a l with these h o s t i l e conditions.

If a b l a c k s t u d e n t c a n not develop relationships, w h y m u s t h e h a v e to g o o n b e i n g l o n e ly, f r u s t r a t e d a n d w e i g h t e d d o w n with p r o b l e m s he c a n n o t h a n d l e b y himself. W h e n the white s t u d e n t s h a v e a r e a l p r o b l e m they c a n g o to a f a c u l t y m e m b e r or the p s y c h o l o g y d e p a r t m e n t f o r help. B l a c k s c a n really g o t o n o one; a s e n s e of t r u s t d o e s n o t exist. All b l a c k s get f r o m c e r t a i n d e p a r t m e n t s is: " Y o u r c u l t u r e is m a triarchal." Other departments m a k e futile a t t e m p t s at r e c o g n i z ing our historical contribution. T h u s , we m u s t l o o k t o e a c h o t h e r f o r s u p p o r t . D r . V o o g d e m p h a s i z e d t h a t the religion m a j o r p r o g r a m can be used as p r e p a r a t i o n for g r a d u a t e s t u d y in s o c i a l w o r k , l a w , j o u r n a l i s m o r c o l l e g e t e a c h i n g a s well as theology. H E A L S O S A I D t h a t the n e w p r o g r a m w a s the i d e a l p r o g r a m for pre-theological work. There was a time w h e n theological schools preferred a student not to m a j o r in r e l i g i o n , he s a i d , since the student would o n l y be t a k i n g r e l i g i o n c o u r s e s in s e m i n a r y . Dr. V o o g d s a i d t h a t this w a s now " a n outmoded view." He add e d t h a t 6 5 p e r c e n t of the c u r r e n t c l a s s of s t u d e n t s at Y a l e D i v i n i t y S c h o o l m a j o r e d in r e l i g i o n a s undergraduates. There are presently 24 students m a j o r i n g in r e l i g i o n at H o p e . D r . W h i l e it is l a u d a b l e t h a t t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n s o u g h t t o s t r e a m l i n e its o p e r a t i o n , this particular attempt has t r e a t e d t h e s y m p t o m s of t h e p r o b l e m , n o t the cause. P e r h a p s the m o s t s e r i o u s p r o b l e m for w o m e n a t H o p e is the e x i s t e n c e of a n o r g a n i z a t i o n s p e c i f i c a l l y f o r t h e m . T h e e x i s t e n c e of a w o m e n ' s g o v e r n m e n t a l o r g a n i z a t i o n i m p l i e s t h a t w o m e n need different protection a n d rules, which H o p e women supposedly d o not want. T h e r e seems t o be litde o r n o r e a s o n f o r t h e e x i s t e n c e of a W o m e n ' s Inter-Residential Council, or a n y such o r g a n i z a t i o n . Why m u s t there be a s e p a r a t e o r g a n i z a t i o n t o " i n t e r p r e t college p o l i c i e s specific t o w o m e n a n d w o m e n ' s residence h a l l s ? " W h y s h o u l d there be a W I C t o " o b s e r v e t h e c o n d u c t of w o m e n within their r e s i d e n c e s ? It is a r e a l a n d m o v i n g d i l e m m a , a n d M i s s ten H o o r h a s p o r t r a y e d it with d e p t h a n d s e n s i t i v i t y . Despite t h e v i v i d r e c o l l e c t i o n of her o w n c h i l d h o o d e x p e r i e n c e of d e a t h , t h e sitter p r o c e e d s i n s e n s i t i v e l y to f o r c e e u p h e mized o r t h o d o x d o c t r i n e u p o n t h e little g i r l . T h e c h i l d ' s p r o b l e m is the u n r e a l i t y of d e a t h , w h i c h o n l y time a n d experience, not a d u l t d o c t r i n e , c a n alter. DAVID A L L E N ' S " T h e Eagle" is an imaginative description, f r o m a n e a g l e ' s p o i n t of v i e w , of a n e a g l e ' s d a y , n i g h t a n d s u b sequent d a w n . It is s o m e w h a t r e m i n i s c e n t in m e t h o d to S a l l y C a r r i g h a r ' s w r i t i n g in s u c h b o o k s a s " O n e D a y o n Beetle R o c k . " One a d m i r e s in t h i s sketch tne capacity for empathic imaginat i o n , b u t m i s s e s the q u a l i t y w h i c h distinguishes Miss C a r r i g h a r ' s w o r k : n a m e l y , her a b i l i t y to satisfy a n d d e l i g h t o u r aesthetic a n d i m a g i n a t i v e needs even as she provides accurate natural history. David Allen's e a g l e is a n e t h e r e a l fellow, w h o " d a r e s " the t e m p e s t " t o b e a t h i m to the f i l t h y e a r t h b e l o w " ( w h i c h he h a s " n e v e r t o u c h e d " ) — a b i r d o n e c a n n o t pict u r e e a t i n g a d e a d fish o n a littered b e a c h or t r y i n g h a r d to n a i l a b o u n d i n g jack-rabbit amid sageb r u s h a n d b o u l d e r s . In their first M I A A c o m p e t i t i o n of t h e 1 9 6 9 s e a s o n , the H o p e C o l lege tennis t e a m fell v i c t i m t o a powerful K a l a m a z o o team 8-1 in a meet at K a l a m a z o o last Saturday. T h e team then defeated C a l v i n C o l l e g e in a meet h e r e W e d n e s day, t a k i n g two of the t h r e e d o u b l e s m a t c h e s a n d f o u r of the six s i n g l e s m a t c h e s .
