T h i s m a t t e r h a s been b r o u g h t up w i t h the I n t e r f r a t e r n i t y Council, both f r a t e r n i t i e s , t h e s t u d e n t council, and the social c o m m i t t e e . Both f r a t e r n i t i e s still plan to h a v e t h e i r b a n q u e t s the s a m e n i g h t . S o m e a d v a n t a g e s of t h e s i t u a t i o n h a v e been cited, but m a n y m o r e disadvantages. F o r example: Some of t h e c a m p u s s w e e t h e a r t s will r a t e the t w o b a n q u e t s , but now t h e y will h a v e to decide w h i c h fellow t h e y w a n t to go w i t h — t h i s is p e r h a p s a v i r t u e in d i s g u i s e ; d i l f i c u l t i e s of obtaining a place to have said p a r t y ; t h e q u e s t i o n of b o r r o w i n g c a r s , d r e s s e s , w h i t e flannels, lips t i c k , a n d a t h o u s a n d a n d one o t h e r n e c e s s i t i e s of l i f e f o r a t y p i c a l Hope college s p r i n g b a n q u e t .

Due to a n a t t a c k of a p p e n d i c i t i s which took h i m out of school t w o weeks before spring vacation, John V a n P i e t e r s o m w a s f o r c e d to m i s s e n o u g h to m a k e it i m p o s s i b l e f o r him to r e t u r n and finish t h e s e m e s ter, without losing m a n y credits. When he w e n t h o m e d u r i n g the vacation, h o w e v e r , he s t a t e d t h a t t h e r e w a s a possibility of his fini s h i n g up in s p i t e of t h e loss of c r e d i t s , but t h e s u d d e n illness of his f a t h e r n e c e s s i t a t e d h i s s t a y i n g in M i l w a u k e e a n d w o r k i n g . T h r o u g h o u t t h e United S t a t e s t h e r e h a s probably been a s much political criticism and public c e n s u r e durino- the last few m o n t h s as h a s been t r u e of any period in recent American h i s t o r y . Politics and g o v e r n m e n t have been t h e o b j e c t s of merciless a t t a c k s in the n e w s p a p e r s and m a g a z i n e s and on t h e air. C o m m u n i s m and moral conditions have been scrupulouslv i n v e s t i g a t e d in o u r large universities. Corporations and b a n k s have been u n d e r fire in o u r courts, until we wonder who or w h a t will be t h e next object ol an o n s l a u g h t . All of which is not w i t h o u t a parallel in Hope College. With all t h e poise and t a c t of which we are capable we h a v e politely inquired into t h e efficiency of t h e s t u d e n t council. With t h e u t m o s t h e s i t a n c y we have v e n t u r e d s u g g e s t i o n s concerning the social activities on t h e c a m p u s . S o f t l v , and with t h e g r e a t e s t f e a r of offending, we have whispered a word or t w o a b o u t t h e " V " p r o g r a m s .
