"Oh no, not a n o t h e r f u n d raising campaign." This was undoubtedly t h e reaction of ninety-nine percent of you when you first heard of t h e f o r m a t i o n of a World S t u d e n t Service Fund campaign to be sponsored by y o u r S t u d e n t Council. I o u g h t to know. It was my reaction, too. It's a p r e t t y n a t u r a l a t t i t u d e , especially when we have already been called upon to give our dollars and blood previously this year. It's fairly well agreed t h a t a f u n d r a i s i n g campaign is almost as popular a s pneumonia. But t h e f a c t remains, as tlie motto of W S S F so aptly p u t s it, t h a t "Need knows no boundaries." M a r c h 17, 1 9 5 2 need is an oppressive t h i n g to those people in t h e world who do w a n t to build a f u t u r e t h r o u g h education.

This is not a governmental project. It is personal campaign. It does have the support and cooperation of UNESCO, but we determine just exactly what is done with our money. The WSSF organization exists simply to guide and supervise those colleges and universities of the United States and of the world, which want to share in the construction of world unity through the development of informed students.

It is the aim of the project to g e t the s t u d e n t s to know a n d realize some of the needs of education in o t h e r p a r t s of the world. There can be no doubt a s to the need of those whom we intend to help. The lack of textbooks, the s h o r t a g e of scientific equipment, and' t h e . prevalence of tuberculosis and o t h e r war-borne diseases is being fully made clear to you in o t h e r articles. Here, however. 1 want to counter a few of t h e possible objections t h a t , may be raised concerning our giving money to Greek schools.

ment. His first speech, delivered a t A m s t e r d a m , N e w York, w a s to' a district y o u n g people's g a t h e r i n g in the i n t e r e s t of Hope. T h e r e a f t e r he spoke to g a t h e r ings of men a t Hudson, N e w Y o r k ; Ridgewood and J e r s e y City, N e w J e r s e y ; and Bayside, L o n g Island. A l t h o u g h t h e s e m e e t i n g s were not designed to p r o m o t e Hope, t h e discussion i n v a r i a b l y g o t a r o u n d t o Hope and its problems. Dr. Lubbers' made innumerable contacts with alumni, p a r e n t s of Hope s t u d e n t s , and with p r o s p e c t i v e s t u dents. A l t h o u g h such t r i p s t a k e Dr. L u b b e r s f r o m his a d m i n i s t r a t i v e d u t i e s here, they a r e i m m e n s e l y profitable in good will a m o n g those contacted.

A n o t h e r f e a t u r e of the p r o g r a m will be- the p e r f o r m a n c e -by t h e o r c h e s t r a of the S c h u b e r t " U n f i n ished" s y m p h o n y . The composition derives its n a m e f r o m the f a c t t h a t only two of the t r a d i t i o n a l f o u r m o v e m e n t s w e r e completed by S c h u b e r t at the t i m e of his d e a t h . It is not widely known h o w e v e r t h a t the c o m p o s e r l e f t a sketch of w h a t he intended to be a t h i r d movement. This sketch includes a complete o r c h e s t r a t i o n of the first several m e a s u r e s and a concise piano version of some of t h e m a t e rial to follow. Dr. H a n David, noted musicologist p r e s e n t l y a m e m b e r of the f a c u l t y a t t h e University of Michigan h a s c o m p l e t e d this unfinished t h i r d m o v e m e n t following t h e i n f o r m a t i o n l e f t by S c h u b e r t and h a s g r a n t e d t h e college o r c h e s t r a permission to p e r f o r m t h i s new t h i r d m o v e m e n t . The Meaning Of WSSF By Gordon De Free Student Council President W S S F are new letters on our campus. Before t h i s year the letters held little meaning for the students of Hope College. W S S F stand for World Student Service Fund and are certain to become more symbolic during the coming week. Several w e e k s a g o t h e valuable w o r k t h i s o r g a n i z a t i o n w a s doing w a s b r o u g h t t o t h e a t t e n t i o n of t h e S t u d e n t Council. Upon i n v e s t i g a t i n g t h e a i m s and p u r p o s e s of t h e W S S F t h e Council decided to s p o n s o r a drive on o u r c a m p u s . It is the hope of the W S S F that through financial aid to needy colleges in war stricken areas, f e e l i n g s of good-will can be accomplished. During this campaign, then, let us think not only of the material use of our money but also of the great understanding which can be achieved among students of different nationalities. Often students are quite disturbed when money drives are s t a g e d . T h e word " m o n e y " seems to place an a l m o s t impassable b a r r i e r b e t w e e n s t u d e n t s and t h e g r o u p e n l i s t i n g f u n d s . We m u s t r e m e m b e r however, t h a t W S S F does n o t w a n t t o t a k e o u r m o n e y — it w a n t s to use our m o n e y . W e can be a s s u r e d t h a t e v e r y dollar will be wisely s p e n t ! Office w h e r e we w e r e received with the k i n d n e s s and affection all stud e n t s receive and we were helped a g r e a t deal. T h e y g a v e me clothing, a bed and bedding, and b o u g h t some of the books I needed. I can say t h a t if it w e r e n o t f o r W.S.S.F.'s help I would h a v e been f o r c e d t o s t o p m y s t u d i e s and go back home. To W . S . S . F . He delivered t h r e e a d d r e s s e s on God in H i s t o r y — p a s t , p r e s e n t , a n d f u t u r e . H e placed the K i n g d o m , m a n ' s only Hope, a s b e i n g beyond h i s t o r y . As a n o t h e r s p r i n g s p o r t season f a s t approaches, the t r a c k team has been assigned to the key role in the race for the all-sports' trophy. It is necessary t h a t the cinder men improve on last y e a r ' s f o u r t h place finish in the conference. Coach A1 Vanderbush, t a k i n g over this y e a r f o r the absent Russ De Vette, voiced the opinion t h a t Hope would be very s t r o n g in some events and in definite need of i m p r o v e m e n t in certain others. Vanderbush stressed the f a c t t h a t the t e a m needs new blood; more f r e s h m e n and new men a r e urged to come out f o r t h e t e a m . The first meet is scheduled f o r Mt. P l e a s a n t on March 29. A run-down of the list of events shows the Dutch to be potentially

s t r o n g in the distance r u n s and in c e r t a i n field events. A total of 14 l e t t e r m e n are on hand a s practice has begun, all of whom can be counted on f o r i m p o r t a n t points this year. The short dashes will be s t r o n g if Ron Bos is able to run u p to his f u l l capacity. He is one of the f a s t e s t men in the M I A A a t the 100 y a r d distance. W a l t V a n d e r Meulen should be a help in the 220 a s should F r e s h m a n Dave Hondorp. Bos and Vander Meuler a r e both lettermen. In the 440, the ret u r n e e s are l e t t e r m e n Bill Bocks, J a c k De W a a r d , Nevin W e b s t e r and Vander Meulen. Hondorp and b a s k e t b a l l e r Bob Hendrickson are expected to add s t r e n g t h to t h i s event.

In t h e 880 t h r o u g h the two-mile, the squad a p p e a r s to be s t r o n g e s t . Successful r u n n e r s a t these distances have been Carl Schroeder, Fred Yonkman, L a r r y F a b u n m i , and M I A A cross-country king. Bob Roos.
