Their cheer leader is the ticking of the clock, and their band the rattling of the milk bottles in the early morning. But, nevertheless. The Anchor comes out on time and the college has no need to be ashamed of it. For those who make it possible, is not a little more appreciation merited from the student body? Although they have the kind of college spirit which is content to work in the dark, with no bands playing or flags waving, still they are not insensible to the approval of their fellow students. How about showing a little appreciation of their year-round service—perhaps by a helping hand when the occasion arises? Back up the scribes as well as the teams. All are working for Hope.

Julius Caesar, brave and true, Stood alone upon the bank; The waters of the river In whirling sips, he drank. " 0 ! friends, my countrymen! All I have is thine, From my horses to my armor. Even to my Adeline." Then in misery, he lamented, 0 ! the tears, the tears. How they fell, so contented, After many pent-up years. Then, in agony, he bursted From his saddened state; Drew his scabbard from his sheath. And thrust it through his pate. 0 ! what a fall my countrymen. When Caesar died a death; And now we chant in cadence, "Poor Caesar, lost his breath."

There are two ways of going through university, and they are quite distinct, from one another. The first way is to go through for the sake of the knowledge that is to be gained, and the second is to go for some knowledge and a little of that very intangible thing that leaves a man J O H N B. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WF.LCOMEI

A tilt t h a t proved unusually interesting to Hopeites, was the one staged last week between the Holland .j,., Furnaces, and the New York Nationals. The latter five is a team made up of former college stars, and for several years back they have played Hope quintets. They play the eastern style of basketball, which baffles nearly all western teams, and the Hope squad was no exception, although they were nosed out of victories by the narrowest of margins. The Western Normal Five which lias twice defeated Hope this season is bidding for the state championship of Michigan, not excepting the strong University of Michigan quintet. They base their claim on the f a c t t h a t they have defeated the strongest teams in the stale, and have defeated t e a m s t h a t have met the University squad by larger scores than t h e Ann Arbor five was able to roll up. They, however, defeated Hope a f t e r gruelling struggles, and both times the score was in doubt until the final whistle sounded.

SOMETHING NEW , i•

MARSH-BERRY SUNDAES ..

There is a strong feeling among the followers of both t e a m s t h a t the Holland Furnace Five should be matched against the Hope quintet before the season ends. This would be a tilt well worth seeing, as the Furnace quint has several Hope and Kazoo college s t a r s in its line-up. Prins, De Jonge, Hinga, Vroege, and "Doc" Heasley, captain of the , 22- , 23 Mich. Aggie five, are stellar performers on this team which meets the strongest midwest professional teams.

The quintet representing Valparsio University, which defeated • the Orange and Blue last week, had run up a record of fifteen s t r a i g h t games won and none lost, the best record established this year in Indiana. Hope has another chance a t them, and all the students should be there to help break their winning streak. The game is to be pulled off on March 5.

Class basket-ball is in full sway. A f t e r weeks of practice the teams arc playing in the elimination tournament. So J a r only three games* have been played." The Juniors defeated the Sophs. 11—5, while the Frosh tjave the dignified Seniors a muchneeded trouncing, 21—14. The Juniors, who have won the class championship for the past two years, were given a scare when they r a n up against the first year men. The Freshmen lead 8—5 at the end of the half, and would have taken the game, had they not committed so many personal fouls, allowing the champs to throw in the necessary pointers to t a k e the tilt with a 15—12 score.
