• YOUR LOCAL TEAM I’m really pleased with this month’s lead article because we really have ‘discovered’ a hidden gem. I was introduced to Bill Biddell and the Hampton Estate by Peter Martin, Chairman of Surrey County Council. He took me along to meet Bill and his lovely wife Bridget and following tea and cake, we were given a tour of the estate, including a visit to the amazing new hop drying (oast) facility that is being built. I immediately knew we had a number of interesting stories to tell about this fascinating local business, which recently won an award for growing the best Fuggle hops in the UK.

A few weeks later, I went along to their Beef Collection Day which is usually the last Friday of the month. The idea is to pre-order your meat and then go along and collect it and enjoy a cup of coffee and yet more cake. How wonderfully civilised! Incidentally, Bill is both charming and terribly modest. Alongside running the family estate, he is Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey and Chairman of the Surrey County Agricultural Society, which runs the Surrey County Show. It also put on the Surrey Game and Country Fair, which took place in September at Loseley, near Guildford. I went along for the first time this year and it was a real treat. Plenty to see and to do, attracting people of all ages. It seemed that having a dog was obligatory, so Humphrey was in his element and had to be dragged away. Incidentally, there was a stand selling the best pork scratchings ever – yet another reason to visit!

As I write this, in early October, the shops are already full of mince pies and festive fare. Pubs and restaurants are publishing their Christmas menus and I even saw my first advert with reference to that dreadful phrase, the 'gifting' period, which of course means Christmas. It won't be long before we start to see hot cross buns and then we know spring is on its way...

Shall we get a

CAT?

Zoe Blake looks at some of the things to consider before getting a cat In recent years the cat has overtaken the dog in being the most popular pet in the UK. There are an estimated 11 million cats living in households, so why the sudden surge in cat ownership? It is well documented that dogs need that little bit more when it comes to care and attention. They need their daily walks, they need daily companionship and they need to feel part of a social group. The public are taught about what to look out for when purchasing/rescuing a dog and this is emphasised with many of the TV programmes that are shown on television.

cat a home that you are respectful of this and provide the environment that they need. So what do they need? All cats live within a territory and within this they need to feel safe and secure. They need to be able to eat/drink/toilet and rest without the fear of an enemy attack. Therefore it is very important that their future home will meet these needs, especially if you will be having two or more cats living together. You need to remember that most cats would choose who they live with, so when you put cats together it may not necessarily work out.

ďƒœ

So is that why the cat is becoming more popular? Cats are very independent, don't need to be walked and are quite fickle when it comes to attention. However is something being missed when we decide to give a cat a home? The domestic cat has evolved from felis lybica (the African wildcat) and as a species, they still hold many of the traits that come with this title. Unlike our canine companions, who have been bred to change and modify certain behaviours, the majority of the cat’s repertoire is still there. It is therefore essential when you are considering giving a

SHALL WE GET A CAT?

Sadly if their needs are not met, it can lead to stress and behaviour related problems like house-soiling, urinemarking and aggression. This is the most common reason that cats are handed into re-homing shelters. Cats need to be able to express their natural behaviours to ensure they balance their emotional and mental wellbeing. Most cats should be allowed to have outside time but if this is not possible, then even more work needs to be in place to enrich their indoor environment. The basic needs of a cat are: Space - within this they need to have the opportunity to climb and explore, rest and hide. Allow them up on the shelves (they can see so much more up high and will favour these), leave some cupboards open so they have a 'bolt hole' if they are feeling anxious about something. Resources - they need plenty of places to eat/drink/toilet and sleep. In a multi-cat household these should all be separate. The general rule is one per cat plus one extra. In

the wild a cat would not chose to eat next to another cat as competition over resources is stressful. They will continually move their sleeping places and they will sleep where they feel comfortable. As much as we would like to see them tucked into a cosy bed, unlike the dog, cats will not appreciate this luxury. Opportunities to perform natural behaviour - cats will still want to hunt even if they have a stomach full of food. It it is the behaviour repertoire that comes with the hunting of the prey that is so important. If this is not provided with outdoor time, then it is time to be vigilant within the house. So consider puzzle/activity feeders - these can be shop-bought but you can be creative and make homemade versions. They need to be provided with something/somewhere they can claw. Clawing is used to stretch muscles/ mark boundaries and sharpen claws. It is all about finding the best material and best location to allow this without them ruining your best leather sofa! Playtime - it is a common misconception that once cats reach adulthood they don't play. All cats with the right stimulation and toys will play. Early morning and evening are good times as their natural body clock is aroused at these times. Again many types are available to purchase however many options can be obtained from the home/ garden. Do not expect too much, 3-5 mins is adequate as they do get bored easily, unlike dogs who you take to the park and will chase that ball for hours. So the most important message if you are considering providing a home for a cat is to have a look around you and evaluate the life that you can give them. Is it really what the cat would want and choose? Zoe Blake is a registered Veterinary nurse. FIND OUT MORE The Friendly Pet Nurse. The Hampton Estate Phil Kemp visits a family-owned and run traditional agricultural estate – and unravels one of Surrey’s bestkept secrets. IF YOU have ever taken the road between Puttenham and Seale you will have undoubtedly seen an impressive hop garden nestling on the southern slopes of The Hog’s Back, an imposing 500ft chalk ridge linking the towns of Guildford and Farnham. You may also have had glimpses of historic parklands and woodlands and perhaps, like me, wondered who they belong to. My visit to the Hampton Estate was, certainly for me, the unravelling of one of Surrey’s ‘best-kept secrets’. Bridget and Bill Biddell not only reside at the very handsome Hampton Lodge, they have also taken on the responsibility from Bridget’s family for managing 2,500 acres, providing a kaleidoscope of different uses that bring direct benefit, not just to the estate, but also to the local community. My tour with Bill started in front of some wall-mounted maps in the estate office, which he used to provide a fascinating overview of the full range of activities the family manage on a day-to-day basis. “This is Puttenham Common, owned by the estate but providing 500 acres of open access to the public. It is managed by Surrey County Council and attracts visitors who enjoy the walks and rides it has to offer.”

One of Surrey’s ‘best-kept secrets’ Bill taps a finger on a large dark green area of the map. “We have a lot of forestry activity on the estate, and are well known for the range of woodland we manage. We produce commercial softwoods, and amenity hardwoods with some of this also for commercial use. We are very sandy here, in common with much of Surrey, and being poor

soil this is perfect for trees. My father-in-law was an absolutely excellent forester and put in lots of trees after the Second World War. So we grow a lot of pine - Corsican pine, Scots pine, and Douglas fir - which all thrive on this sandy soil.” Having now got a visual impression of just how large and wide-ranging the land management is at Hampton, I was intrigued as to how this is managed and put to use. Bill smiled proudly as he pointed at a framed certificate hanging on the wall. “In 2014, we won the Best of England multipurpose woodland from the Forestry Society. We have three foresters, two full-time and one part-time, and this ensures we have excellent specimens of trees. Not only do we sell logs locally, we also use a lot of the timber ourselves for the biomass boilers we have put in over the last ten years, both in our Shoelands offices development and in the estate houses. And of course, everyone enjoys walking through the woodland where we have installed a car park and opened up the rides.”

Above: Forestry work at the Hampton Estate. Below: Film sets on the Hampton Estate

Walking across the courtyard from the estate office towards some outbuildings, Bill paused and pointed across to Hampton House. “This was recently transformed into a château for a scene from a new television series Deep State. It’s a spy thriller produced by Fox Productions. We were a ‘safe house’ for a mother and two children who were hostages here. She escaped, got out of the house and ran down towards the lake. We watched some scenes being filmed there at night with lots of lights and production people everywhere. It was very exciting!” We entered a beamed room adorned with large photos providing a colourful panorama of different scenes of Hampton Estate. Bill understandably continued to brag about their home being used for filming, and not just because of the big screen names wandering through from time to time. Being chosen as a film location serves as a perfect illustration of just how special the whole estate is with its mix of historic parkland, grazing meadows and traditional farmyards - as well

as, of course, the imposing Grade II Georgian house and gardens. Quintessentially very English.

“The estate was used for the filming of Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe about ten years ago. We had virtually the whole of Universal Studios here, and they were with us for a year and a half – this because having built the set of the village of Nottingham there was a Screen Actors Guild strike in the middle of filming!” Other filming activity at Hampton has included The Hollow, an episode of the ITV series Agatha Christie’s Poirot and more recently A Field in England, a history drama following a group of deserters from the Civil War in 17th century England. “Filming is certainly a fun side to what we do here. I gave Steven Spielberg a tour of the estate in my pickup once, oh, and we’ve had George Clooney pop in for tea!” Bill’s broad smile hinted at just how much they enjoy the hustle and bustle of a film production invasion. “We are quite well -known in the filming world for big scale sets on a private estate. All the location agents know who we are.” Having seen the impressive hop gardens many a time from the road in Puttenham, and being a bit of an ale drinker myself, I simply had to find out more. In fact, I was quite surprised I had sat on my question for so long!

“The Hampton Estate has always grown hops – and we’ve always grown one variety which is Fuggle, a classic English aroma hop. We supply the Hog’s Back Brewery with the hops for their Tongham Tea and Harveys Brewery down in Sussex – as well as The Black Sheep Brewery, Adnams and Timothy Taylor who have all been using Fuggles in their recipes for years. Oh, and we’ve supplied the Silent Pool Distillery over in Albury with hops to mix into the aromatics for their brilliant gin!” I pointed at the wall-mounted photo of a very friendly-looking cow, which

We restocked with Pedigree Sussex because the Sussex are a lovely breed of cow – very hardy and very relaxed. Dilemma: full wardrode, no outfits! • FASHION

With Kirstie Smillie

Some people look in their crammed wardrobes but can’t find a thing to wear. Does this sound familiar, asks personal stylist Kirstie Smillie? APPARENTLY THE average woman in the UK wears just five outfits on a rarely altering loop and as we all love a survey, here are some more of Oxfam’s fascinating findings: * Nearly half of the nation admit to having ‘wardrobe rage’ (irrational tantrums when choosing an outfit) * On average, women spend seventeen minutes choosing a look, with men spending thirteen minutes. * Almost a third of Britons feel that their wardrobe is a mess and half confess they need to declutter. * There are 3.6 billion clothes left unworn, a whopping 57 items per person, an average of 16 items left unworn. * One in ten also arrive late for work because of the time spent in choosing their outfits. * Twenty one percent of women admitted that choosing an outfit caused them to row with their partner, and fourteen percent have refused to go out as a result of struggling to feel happy in an outfit. You can start the process yourself with small steps. It is one of those jobs you can tackle on a free morning or a Saturday afternoon; give yourself some ‘me time’, and enjoy a good clothes cleanse.

I have had a lifetime, it feels, of working in the fashion industry, from fashion designer and magazine stylist to a personal stylist. I work with wonderful ‘real’ people and those in particular who have lost direction and confidence or just lack the time to develop a wardrobe that is full of clothes they love.

Tackle one drawer at a time. Take everything out, T-shirts, sweaters, crumpled vest tops. Do they fit? Are they clean? Do you still wear them or could they be useful hanging with that low top that always gapes? Then only put back in wearable, clean items and deal with the others. Another day, another drawer until you are ready to work on the full wardrobe spaces. Give yourself an hour. Decide on a time to look at individual items and try them on. Make an outfit and hang them together to save time, even with the right underwear which is sometimes hard to find at 7am.

Do they need altering? Perhaps the jacket sleeves are too long? Take them along to your local alteration shop and get them to pin and shorten for you.

Shorten loved prints to make more wearable tops or even change their identity altogether, cushions are a simple solution.

Bare root plants are usually less costly than container plants, and as you're ordering the plants bare root without containers, it's often a more ecologically friendly way to purchase them. In my experience, bare root plants tend to be healthier and establish better than container grown plants, especially in the case of deep-rooted plants like roses and trees.

I've been in love with Rosa 'Lady Emma Hamilton' since this delightful rose's introduction over ten years ago. 'Lady Emma Hamilton' is a highly-perfumed rose that produces absolutely charming, warm apricot-orange blushed, beautiful bowl-shaped blooms, which envelop anyone making its acquaintance in a delicious, fruity fragrance, which has a warmth and intensity that we look for in roses but rarely find. Growing 3.5ft (1m) tall and 3ft (90cm) wide, Rosa 'Lady Emma Hamilton' is a fabulous choice for a container, or a border where its charismatic flowers and their delectable scent can be enjoyed. Container-grown roses benefit from a loam-based compost. I mix my own compost, adding Dalefoot's wool-based compost for extra water retention and nutrients. Wherever you're planting roses, don't forget to apply mycorrhizal fungi at planting time. Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with plants, the fungi helps the plant to develop a more extensive, wider-reaching root system, which benefits the plants, making the plant more resilient in times of drought or stress, and allowing new plants to establish quickly.

If you're looking for a sumptuous, dreamy climbing rose to decorate your front doorway, I doubt you could find a better rose that Rosa 'The Pilgrim' with its softly coloured yellow blooms, which bring a gentle, soothing light to even the dullest day of our British summertime. The many-petalled blooms of Rosa 'The Pilgrim' form delightful rosettes, which produce a warm and delicious tea rose fragrance that has a sensual myrrh character. This beautiful rose with its graceful flowers, which have an ethereal quality and alluring perfume, would make a wonderful feature, whether grown over an

Baked Whole Onions with Bacon and Rosemary My gran was the first person I remember baking whole onions, and it’s good to see that they’re now appearing on menus more often. Keeping the skins on during cooking helps the onions keep their shape. Vary the stuffing as much as you like, and you could use smaller onions for a fantastic accompaniment for roast chicken. Chicory and Ham Gratin I learnt this in a little French bistro in Paris, the kind of place with cheap, tasty food and lots of locals. I go there every time I’m in town and eat this dish with grilled chicken or beef – I love it! Following a quick tour around the kitchen and a masterclass from the French grandmother who cooks it, here it is. Ingredients 75g butter, 50g plain flour, 500ml milk, 1 tsp Dijon mustard, 200g Gruyère or Emmental cheese, grated, 4 large heads chicory, 8 slices cooked ham, sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Serves 4

ADEVIL'S couple of National Trust PUNCH BOWL: HIGH ROADwalking AND PINEtrails VALLEY Autumn is a time of wonder when the natural world turns a kaleidoscope of colour and landscapes come alive with wildlife events. For more information on National Trust walks, visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/walking.

• THE WALKS

Woolbeding Landscapes This is a gentle walk taking in wildlife, riverside views, and wide open landscapes. Gentle, easygoing underfoot, some stiles and slopes. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome. Please note that there may be livestock in some areas. 1. Face the signboard, take the path to your right; cross a small track and follow beneath the line of pylons. Enjoy the views to your right, overlooking the South Downs. Continue over the brow of the hill and descend 100 metres to a place where paths meet. 2. From the track junction, go left, then the first right, which heads down the valley - you're in heathland here, a mixture of bell heather, ling, and dwarf gorse. Continue until you reach where another path crosses the way. There's a small shady pond to your right. 3. Keep straight on down the valley towards the house at the bottom. Turn right, and follow the track until you reach the lane. 4. Look for the waymarker to your right, on the opposite side of the lane, then follow the footpath

through the trees out into the open field. Continue along the hedgerow, cross the stile, then turn left and go downhill through the fields, going under the pylons and along the next field; at the bottom, turn right along Stedham Lane. 5. Within 50 metres, to your left you'll see a waymarker pointing to a steeply descending path beside ancient beech trees. Head down the path to the bottom, by the river, where you'll find Stedham ford and old mill. Keep this side of the river Rother, turn left and follow the riverside path. Continue, passing over a small wooden bridge, until you pass through a wooden gate, through the next field. Before the end of the field, turn left at a wooden gate leading up into the woods.

Box Hill Riverside Walk As you walk along the River Mole look out for dragonflies, wagtails and the electric blue of a darting kingfisher. Stop awhile to take in the ageing Second World War concrete structures which stand sentinel along the water's edge. This is a circular walk with a steep descent and climb. In wet weather it can be very muddy. Cattle graze along part of the route so please keep your dog under close control. 1. You can choose to start your walk at the visitor centre, or at Salomons Memorial Viewpoint. Once at the viewpoint looking out over Surrey and Sussex, walk down the steps and follow the path to the right, following the signs. Look out for the left turn which takes you diagonally down the hill below the viewpoint. 2. Reaching the tarmac road turn right and walk along it. The fields on either side of you are part of Box Hill Farm. 3. Continue along the road, ignoring other turnings until the road runs out. You’ll see a gate to your right hand side – go through this. To your left you’ll see the River Mole which you’ll walk along for the next mile. 4. Here the species-rich slopes of Box Hill to your right are often grazed by belted Galloway cattle for the conservation of our rare flowers and insects.

Soon you’ll come across Pixham weir and mill. Until the early 20th century, the River Mole turned several waterwheels here, principally for corn grinding and fulling (a term used to describe cleaning cloth, particularly wool). 5. The path will take you under Pixham viaduct, built in the Victorian era. Shortly you’ll come to an unusual collection of 12 anti-tank cylinders perched at the water's edge. Built in 1940, they were part of a wider anti-invasion scheme. 6. This stretch of land is floodplain and the creation of a ‘scrape’ in this area will form a wetland habitat for wildlife such as amphibians and waterfowl. Selfseeding reeds, rushes and sedges will provide a valuable nesting and foraging habitat for wading birds. The pathway will now take you away from the banks of the river, climbing into woodland. Just before you start your climb, look through the trees to see a Second World War Type 24 Infantry shell-proof pill box. This would have been defended by infantry with Bren guns and covered the east bank of the River Mole and the lower western slopes of Box Hill. 7. A set of steps will take you uphill through woodland comprising yew, beech and oak. 8. At the top of the steps, turn left. Carry along the path through the woods and take the first right hand turn. Look out for Swiss Cottage, the former home of John Logie Baird and the site of his first

experiments in the development of television. A few metres on is the Box Hill visitor centre, the end of your walk.

YMCA - short break provision • PROFILE would either be laughing or screaming and James had so much uncontrollable energy that he just ran in circles. We love them but we were at the end of our tether.” Her husband, John, agrees: “It isn’t an exaggeration to say that we were not enjoying life.”

YMCA East Surrey have been commissioned by Surrey County Council to deliver Play and Leisure Short Breaks for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities across East Surrey. The vibrant local charity has been awarded a 3-year contract, starting in December 2017, to deliver play (Yippee) and youth (Yip4Youth) schemes in Reigate & Banstead, Mole Valley and Epsom and Ewell, as well as a play scheme for Tandridge. With 15 years’ experience of delivering play and leisure schemes for children and young people with disabilities in Reigate & Banstead, YMCA East Surrey was one of the founding members of the Play and Leisure Consortium, the group of charities who first identified the need for specialised provision to help children with disabilities to develop and to give parents and siblings a break from caring. The YMCA’s team of qualified and experienced staff already deliver schemes on Saturdays, throughout all school holidays and after school. Last year, the charity delivered 37,000 hours of short breaks. Daniel*, 10, and James*, 8, have complex special needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Global Developmental Delay. Daniel has also been diagnosed with a chromosomal deletion. The brothers were adopted by Jane and John at a young age. “Before the boys started coming to the YMCA, we felt like we were sinking,” says Redhill resident Jane. “Every day was an enormous challenge. When the boys were young, Daniel

Yippee provides age-appropriate activities for children aged 5-11 with a wide range of disabilities and complex needs. The playscheme ensures that children can play with friends and try out new activities, whilst giving families some much needed support. “Yippee was heaven-sent,” says Jane. “It feels like one big family and the staff know the boys so well now. We used to feel guilty that we needed this help but we just couldn’t keep up with the pace.” “When we pick Daniel and James up from Yippee, the joy on their faces is a pleasure to see and they are calm and tired. It’s given them the opportunity to make good, solid friendships and John and I the chance to have a couple of hours together.” With new funding this year, YMCA East Surrey have been able to accommodate children who need one-to-one support whilst in their care to a level of 40% within the Yippee group. There are currently 272 children and young people registered with Yippee and Yip4Youth, the YMCA’s youth club, weekend and school holiday scheme for 12-18-year olds with disabilities and complex needs. “The YMCA’s Short Breaks team have helped us enormously,”says John. “We are really confident in them as service providers and thrilled and relieved that they have been awarded this contract. Our lives were an ordeal that was weakening us, day by day, and Yippee saved us.” *Names have been changed to protect identity for personal reasons

Gatwick Airport and St Catherine’s Hospice shop challenge 65 staff members from Gatwick Airport swapped their regular roles for retail as part of a volunteering challenge in St Catherine’s Hospice charity shops. Split into teams and deployed to St Catherine's 16 shops across Sussex and Surrey, including the Dorking shop, teams were kept busy with a series of tasks and challenges. Going head-to-head against their colleagues, Gatwick staff got stuck into sorting donations, steaming and pricing items, and decorating shop windows with stock to showcase the autumn season. As well as taking on these crucial volunteering tasks, teams also raced against one another to find five items with a link to Gatwick Airport, and there was a prize for the best outfit for a team member to wear to the pub. Inspired by Gatwick staff?
