You Are Not Alone. Eighty per cent of us will pay too much inheritance tax. Last year, Inheritance Tax (IHT) soared by 22% to a record £4.6 billion. Many of us wish to help childdren/grandchildren onto the property ladder and this can be through inheritance. Many people pay far too much IHT because they have out of date Wills or homemade Wills. What should you do? • Check that your Will is compliant with the new IHT allowance ‘Residence Nil Rate Band’. • Have your Will professionally written. • Obtain professional pensions advice as part of your IHT planning. A Will can achieve all of the following: • Minimise tax. • Ensure that minor children are looked after by your appointed guardians. • Ensure that a young person does not inherit at the age of 18. • Ensure that your spouse has enough to live on but that your assets do not get swallowed up in Care Fees. • Ensure that your partner is provided for but your children inherit ultimately. • Ensure means tested benefits are protected. • Protect your assets from your children’s divorces or business insolvencies.

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPAs) These are essential documents designed to protect YOUR interests during your lifetime. We should all have them because no one is immune to illness or accident. They are the best insurance you can have. Do you travel a lot? Do you enjoy hazardous sports? Do you run a business? If misfortune strikes and there are no LPAs in place your spouse or other relative cannot run your affairs for you. Even a joint account can be frozen. The alternative to LPAs is an application to the Court of Protection .This is complex and expensive. It is best to have LPAs in place. Shaws Wills 3 We meet with you in informal surroundings and spend a lot of time making sure that we get everything right and you are happy. We believe in Plain English. 3 We advise on the most tax effective solutions. 3 Our clients tell us that the experience has been a pleasant one and they are extremely glad that they have the necessary documents in place. 3 Please phone us now.

A well written Will can achieve so much and is not a recurring cost.

For a cheaper option, and one of my favourite days out, why not go for a lovely walk in our beautiful countryside, with or without a pub stop en route. We have a couple of small walks this month suitable for the whole family, including toddlers and grandparents. As I finish the Jottings I can actually report that it is raining! The first miserable day for weeks. It has been a wonderful summer up to now and we have virtually lived outdoors, just hoping that this rain is just a temporary blip. August is the real holiday month and many of you will be going away to other parts of the UK or perhaps abroad. Maybe you are just staying put, however whatever you are doing, have a great time and get some well-earned relaxation. HANDMADE

MUSICAL

INSTRUMENTS Phil Kemp meets local craftsman and musician Mervyn Mewis We have many opportunities to enjoy live music at local venues. From blues, rock and pop through to jazz, folk and choral – and everything in between. And for the more adventurous have-a-go music fans there is also a vibrant community of enthusiasts who provide a chance to join like-minded

people in organised jam sessions, choral groups, or to take up one-on-one tuition. However, Godalming-based musician Mervyn Mewis goes one better - and in style for not only does he perform at a range of venues with his traditional musical instruments, he also designs and handcrafts them. But he doesn’t stop there. As a highly experienced woodworker and respected woodsman he literally sources the materials he needs from local woodland, prepares the raw wood and builds his instruments from scratch. Impressive, and even more so as Mervyn also runs classes so that others can benefit first-hand from his skills as instrument maker and musician. Oh, and furniture maker too! Mervyn invited me to join him for a personal introduction to his craft and a demonstration of how he performs with the range of instruments he builds. My time with him flew with unwelcome speed but will remain with me for what it proved to be – a fascinating, inspiring and enthusiastic tour of his craft. “It was at the Ram Cider House in Catteshall Lane I discovered English Irish folk music. It’s also where I met Kathryn Young my partner and where, by chance, I ran into a professional instrument maker,” Mervyn reminisced. “He offered to make me a musical instrument and it was he that instilled the idea of me trying for myself. Once I had got a City & Guilds in carpentry Kathryn suggested that I study musical instrument making, which I did, and it was there I built my first instruments.”

August 2017

Mervyn reached over to pick up a triangular-shaped string instrument, which I was to learn was a bowed psaltery. “This, and the hammer dulcimer, are two of my favourite instruments,” he explained. “Some 25 years ago in The Ram a lady played one of these and I had never heard

incredible depth and volume of sound coming from such a small hand-held instrument. “It’s not particularly difficult to play, and is very resonant and very expressive. From my very first bowed psaltery I started to experiment and change the design. I made it bigger and wider, thicker, deeper and longer – and I put a curve in it. For such a small instrument it’s not what you’d expect, and I’ve seen people stop in their tracks to listen, totally captivated.” Carefully placing the psaltery down, having scolded me for reaching out to touch the hair strings on the bow which apparently can be spoiled by human skin secretions, he sat on the stool by the large hammer dulcimer where it was resting on a wooden cradle, naturally also built by Mervyn. specifically for ornament. Those that come my way are either part of woodland management, or as thinning and dangerous tree work with people like the National Trust.” Mervyn started to gently strike at the dulcimer’s strings with a spoon-shaped mallet hammer in each of his hands. “With all of my instruments one thing that they have in common is that every single one of them to me is beautiful for their own intrinsic qualities. I use a range of timbers.

Where can you meet Mervyn? Mervyn gives demonstrations most Tuesdays and Wednesdays until the end of autumn at the Weald and Downland Living Museum www.wealddown.co.uk. 30th September–1st October, Surrey Hills Wood Fair, Bramley Saturday 16th December, Grayshott Folk Evening

From wild cherry, London plane and sycamore, to yew, elm, ash and western red cedar. All of these particular instruments came off the North Downs. My favourite is probably the ash tree – its timber is just so beautiful.” In response to my question as to how long it takes to make an instrument he stopped playing and ran his eyes over the dozen or so hand-made instruments on display. “It can vary considerably of course, but for this hammer dulcimer it took six to seven days of work, including the stand. That’s also taking into account the actual go-getting of the tree as well as preparation of the timber.” I could have very easily filled this magazine with everything I learned whilst with Mervyn, space I sadly didn’t have. If you want to listen to Mervyn, and Kathryn who incidentally plays a handmade harp, they play at venues around the country. If you would like to learn more, and perhaps even join Mervyn in one of his classes, please visit his website. HASLEMERE FOOD FESTIVAL

Saturday 23rd September – Lion Green, Haslemere 10am to 4pm

Haslemere Food Festival is back for its twelfth year once again celebrating all that is great about local food and drink. Set to be bigger and better than ever before, this year’s festival will build on the success of 2016, with new products to tantalise your taste buds and many old favourites. Once again located on Lion Green, the Haslemere Food Festival will offer a fantastic range of both homemade and local produce to take home with you, including fruit, vegetables, meat, sauces, pastries, salad dressings, chutneys, curries, oils, maple syrup, chocolate truffles, fabulous fishy delights, cheese, bread and even seaweed! Obviously you will also need something to keep you going on the day, so why not try some spicy street food, a gourmet hot dog, BBQ satay sticks, hog roast or traditional fish and chips? With all this food to get through, you will no doubt build up a thirst and we have this covered too of course. With still and sparkling wines, ales, gin, cocktails and mocktails, tea, coffee and milkshakes there is something for everyone! The day will also feature a packed programme of foodie demonstrations – watch our local chefs demonstrate their expertise creating seasonal starters, autumn breads and local meat dishes and learn some top tips to impress family and friends. 16

Then finish the day in the perfect way with a wine and fizz tasting. A real family event, there will also be plenty to keep the children busy, with fun fair attractions, face painting, children’s entertainment and an arts and crafts stall. If you feel the need to relax and move away from the food for a moment, why not take a cold drink and go and chill in front of the stage where local musicians will be performing throughout the day! Haslemere Food Festival provides the perfect opportunity for local producers to show off their products and helps showcase what Haslemere and the surrounding area has to offer. The success of the Food Festival is down to what our town does best: public, private and voluntary organisations working together to deliver an event that demonstrates the quality of products and services that are available. So come along and enjoy sampling the varied produce on display! This community event is surely one not to be missed! This year’s food festival promises foodie fun for the whole family with a day of activities and entertainment, so make sure you keep up to date with all the latest news and events and follow them on Facebook: @HaslemereFoodFestival and Twitter: HaslemereFF.

|| GARDENING

With Beth Otway

Jonathan Hogarth and his Hostas Jonathan Hogarth holds the National Collection of small and miniature Hostas. In 2016 Jonathan exhibited his Hosta collection at the RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Palace Flower Shows, and was presented with a Gold Medal by the RHS judges at both events. In 2017 the RHS judges at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show awarded Jonathan Hogarth a Silver Medal for his display of miniature and small Hostas. I met Jonathan at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show to learn more about his Hosta collection and his unstoppable passion for this particular plant genus. Beth: So who first introduced you to miniature Hostas, or did you come across Hostas for the first time in a garden? Jonathan: I bought a house and it came with a Hosta. From there, ten years and two children later, we went to visit some friends and I saw there were different Hostas there.

August 2017

I thought there was only a green Hosta! So I started getting a yellow one, the blue one, and then I found the variegated ones, so I came away with twelve different Hostas. I knew how to grow Hostas by then, as for 10 years I’d looked after my plant, put a few slug pellets around and it almost looked after itself. I thought to myself, well this Hosta is quite a nice plant – it’s looking after me as much as I’m looking after it! Beth: Yes it is! JH: I then found a specialist Hosta nursery, and I joined the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society, of which I have recently been appointed as Chairman. Beth: How exciting, congratulations! Beth: Are there any new Hosta plants featured in your exhibit? JH: Hosta 'Mini Skirt' is the new plant. Beth: What’s special about Hosta 'Mini Skirt'? JH: Hosta 'Mini Skirt' was produced in 2013 by Walters Gardens. In 2014 I bought it in America. In 2017 it has just become available in the UK for the first time. It’s a beautiful plant, with a really yellowy, frilly white edge to it, just like Marilyn Monroe’s skirt when she was holding it down with the wind blowing up from the grate. It’s just so pretty like that. And of course it’s one of the Blue Mouse Ears Series, it's just an unbelievable plant, it really is.

Beth: I have previously written about Hostas that I had grown, which hadn’t at the time suffered from slug damage; I think the slugs read my articles, because since then many of my Hostas have been damaged! JH: It’s down to the thickness of the leaf. If the slug or the snail tries to bite the Hosta and can’t get a hold of the leaf, it gives up. But it’s different as the Hosta is coming out of the ground. If the slug can get to the leaf then, as it’s coming out of the ground, it’ll nibble away. Those nice, thick leaves are still quite soft when they're young, so the slug will most likely go crazy and destroy all the leaves. But if you can let the plant grow for about a month, and keep the slugs and snails at bay, then you’re onto a winner. The plants in the Blue Mouse Ears Series produce a thicker leaf and it does put the slugs off. To say it’s slug proof is not what it is. But if the slugs and snails can’t chew a hole through the leaf and carry on nibbling, they’ll just tell all their friends to ‘forget it’, so there you are.

two things – it kills the slugs and snail eggs completely, and it kills the slugs and snails themselves. One of our society members makes an effective slug deterrent; they put a garlic bulb into some tights, put this in a pint of water and simmer for twenty minutes. Discard the tights and garlic mush, and leave to cool. Add about five drops of the garlic concentrate to a one-pint container of water; spray under the leaves, and on top, to keep the slugs and snails at bay. Beth: Did you have a favourite garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show? JH: Chris Beardshaw's garden was my favourite. Hosta Mini Skirt

Beth: Which Hostas would you recommend that offer the most resistance to slugs and snails? JH: There’s some medium to large Hostas, such as Hosta 'Rhino Hide' and Hosta 'Sum and Substance'. Beth: Yes, Sum and Substance is a lovely Hosta, although that has been eaten this year. JH: It has, because as the plant came up from the ground it will have been nibbled. There are some ways around it – and that’s to use a weak ammonia mix before the plants emerge in the spring. Use a small amount, put it into your watering can, as a weak solution and water it all over the area where the Hostas are growing in the ground. It does

MADHURST 2017 Sunday 20th to Tuesday 29th August

From 20th to 29th August this year, the Midhurst Arts and Drama Festival (MADhurst) will celebrate its seventh successful year of bringing the local community together in a creative extravaganza.

took place, and has grown every year since. Local organisations involved in all kinds of cultural activities participate actively in planning events for the festival, whether evening or lunch-time concerts, workshops or exhibitions. Many more participate in the Town Council’s Carnival parade on August Bank Holiday or have stalls or performances at the Grand Finale, also on August Bank Holiday. The West Sussex Library Service supports the Short Story Competition.

Although the focus is on celebrating local creativity, almost all Midhurst and local community groups are involved in one way or another, cocreating the community spirit of this thriving little town. Individuals participate as members of the committee, as part of a wider, and growing, group of volunteers, or just by enjoying the varied programme, which has something for all ages. Like many good ideas, the MADhurst concept was born in the pub! Some time during 2009, Father Marcus Ronchetti, recently arrived as Vicar of Midhurst (and formerly a founder member of the Beach Dreams Festival in Shoreham) was chatting with friends in a local pub about community life in Midhurst. Father Ronchetti had found that Midhurst was a very active little town, with many different clubs and societies engaged in a wide range of themes, but surprisingly these groups rarely came together and many did not even know the others existed. This limited community spirit. The friends agreed that there was a huge opportunity to embrace the existing Town Council carnival ethos by drawing in the wider community. The idea was born! The friends explored it further with local music producers, and within a few months the first MADhurst

Local businesses join in as sponsors, or provide raffle prizes, make special promotions, provide delicious food at the Grand Finale, help with design and printing of publicity or ensure security. The Parish Church has expanded its involvement by hosting a concert, convening an ecumenical service and, very importantly, providing the teas at the Grand Finale. There is also an active fringe of events planned by others during the same week, which adds to the excitement and variety. The first MADhurst Festival was a great success, and it has since grown into a hugely popular annual event. It was even mentioned by The Times as one reason to move to Midhurst! Its purpose has always been to celebrate Midhurst as a great place to live, work and visit: it seems to be achieving just that. ONE OF the world’s most celebrated Cellists, Raphael Wallfisch, is making his first visit to Grayshott in September. He is regularly invited to play at major festivals including BBC Proms, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, and events in Italy, Spain, Norway, Germany and the United States – and now Grayshott. Accompanied by the famous London Mozart Players, he is to perform one of the three great romantic works for cello, Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor. Grayshott has already staged Cello

The Great Little Cookery School The Great Little Cookery School offers home cooking taught by home cooks. Louise Buchanan and Gill Kellett had talked about the idea of starting a cookery school for a long while. It took the ‘flying the nest’ of their two eldest sons to university, to decide it was time to start The Great Little Cookery School. They both share a love of home cooking and have a wealth of cookery knowledge between them and want to encourage people to cook more at home. The small hands

on cookery classes are run from Fernhurst. Their website (www.tglcookeryschool.wordpress.com) which gives details of all classes, alternatively contact Louise or Gill on tglcs16@gmail.com as bespoke classes can also be arranged. Suitable for all ages, from children, teenagers to adults. Prices start from £40 and all equipment and ingredients are supplied.

Homemade Lemonade

This is such a simple recipe, but really delicious on a hot day. You could always add less water and then top up with sparkling water to the 1 ½ pint mark before serving. Ingredients: 3 large juicy lemons, 175 g sugar, 900 ml boiling water Makes 1.5 pints 1. Pare the washed lemons with a potato peeler taking care not to get any of the bitter pith. 2. Put the rind and sugar into a bowl or large jug and pour over the boiling water. Cover, stirring occasionally, and allow to cool. 3. Add the juice of the lemons and strain before serving.

Roasted Cod with Olives, Pesto and Parma Ham

This is one of my many made up recipes. The Parma ham and pesto ensures that the cod remains moist. Ingredients: 4 pieces of chunky cod loin 6 slices of Parma ham ½ jar of pesto, any colour you fancy About 20 olives, I use green, cut in half Serves 4

1. Preheat the oven to 200ºC. 2. Lay 1 ½ pieces of Parma ham in a shallow oven proof dish and place the cod fillet on top. 3. Spread 1 tsp or so of the pesto over the cod, and place as many of the olives as you like on top, cut side down. August 2017

4. Finish wrapping the Parma ham over the rest of the fish. 5. Repeat with the other 3 fillets. 6. Bake for around 15 minutes or until the ham is crispy and golden brown.

Nectarine and Raspberry Crumble Ingredients: 4 nectarines 1 punnet of fresh raspberries or equivalent of frozen 2 tablespoons of dark brown or caster sugar Crumble Topping: 150g plain flour 75g butter 75g sugar Serves 4 1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees C. 2. Place the washed, chopped nectarines into a shallow ovenproof dish. Sprinkle over the 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Add the raspberries. 3. Make the crumble topping by rubbing the butter into the flour and when it resembles fine breadcrumbs, stir in the sugar.

4. Tip on top of the fruit and pat down gently with your hand. 5. Bake in oven for around 25 - 30 minutes until the top is golden brown. 6. Serve with custard or cream or the homemade ice cream. You could also make this with apricots.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

This is one of the best ice creams ever; it really does rival an expensive shop bought version. Don’t worry if you don’t have an ice cream maker, this will still work! Ingredients: 300 ml extra thick double cream 300 ml milk 1 can of condensed milk – you could use the new caramel or chocolate flavours and make caramel or chocolate ice cream. For me, it has to be vanilla! 1 tsp of vanilla essence Image: Pinterest

1. Firstly mix the double cream and the condensed milk together and then, using the cream carton, measure out the milk and then add a teaspoon of vanilla essence. Mix this altogether until smooth. 2. Put the mixture into an ice cream maker for about 20 – 25 minutes until it starts to freeze and then pour into a freezable container until hard. 3. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a freezable container and place in the 30

freezer for around 25 minutes. Once the ice cream has started to freeze around the edges, give it a good stir to break down the ice crystals. Do this for a second time, after about 15 minutes and then leave to freeze until solid. 4. You will need to take the ice cream out of the freezer for around 5 minutes before serving to soften slightly.

Family walks with the National Trust This month we have a couple of short walks for all the family, especially young children. These walks are from our friends at the National Trust and they have many more on their website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/walking.

The walks Box Hill Stepping Stones 1. From the visitor centre at the top of Box Hill, follow the surfaced path away from the visitor centre. Ignore the track going off to your right and continue along the surfaced path running parallel to the road and you’ll see the view opening out in front of you. 2. Once you’ve admired the view from Salomon’s Memorial, walk down the sloped path which runs below the viewpoint. Take a right and continue along this path. 3. You’ll see some steps cut into the ground on your left; follow these downhill through the Yew woods. There are 275 steps to the bottom - take care as they can be slippery sometimes. Continue along this path; on the left you’ll catch glimpses of the river Mole. 4. Continue downhill. As the path flattens you’ll reach a fork in the path. Take the left fork signed to the Stepping Stones. The River Mole and Stepping Stones are in front of you. You have a choice here. Either take a right at the rivers’ edge and follow the riverside path (you can cross the river at the bridge a little further along), or cross the Stepping Stones and follow the path running parallel to the river on the other side. 5. Once you’ve reached the footbridge, go through the gate next to it. This brings you out into a large open space. This is called Burford Meadow. Continue through the meadow. On the opposite bank of the river there are wooded chalk cliffs. These are known as the Whites. 6. At the far end of Burford Meadow there will be a road bridge in front of you. Follow the path upwards, just to the left of the bridge and you’ll come out on the pavement next to the A24. Take a

right and cross the river and walk past the hotel on your right hand side. Continue along the pavement. 7. Take the right hand path immediately after the hotel. At the fork, take the left hand grassy track and continue heading directly uphill. 8. Join the wide grassy path on the ridge of the hill. The grassy slope becomes a white chalk path, follow it uphill. 9. Take the pathway on your left. As it joins the stony path, take a right and continue as it heads uphill. 10. You’ll pass an old building on your right. This is Box Hill Fort. You can walk all around the outside but not inside as there are bats living in it. Continue up the stony track and turn right at the road to return to the visitor centre.

DISTANCE: 2 miles OS MAPS: Explorer 146, Landranger 187 STARTING POINT: National Trust Visitor Centre, The Old Fort, Box Hill Road, Tadworth, Surrey KT20 7LB Summer Star Gazing walk at Black Down 1. From the car park on Tennyson’s Lane at point 1, take the main stone surfaced track out onto Black Down (there is a second car park further up this track). Head up on the main track and through the gate, past a notice board. Continue up the track, through a gully and past a bench with day time views over the weald to the east. 2. Continue along the main path, ignoring paths to your left and right, and past some small ponds on your right at point 2. Away from the light pollution of nearby towns, Black Downs sweeping skies and unspoilt views make it an ideal spot for observing the stars. Try and spot the Milky Way, a ribbon of millions of stars, threading its way across the night sky. The light you see from a twinkling star has travelled across the universe for millions of years to reach you; so when looking at a star, you are actually looking back in time. Black Down’s prominent position in the landscape has also been used for much more over the years. A site on the hill was a key link in the chain of beacons that were designed to carry news of impending invasion to London. In daylight there are extensive views to the north here.

3. Carry on along main path to a small grassy triangle with a birch tree, then turn left and follow this path to a bench at point 3. This is a particularly good point for star gazing, with views to the west over the Milland Bowl and beyond to the South Downs. Also listen out for nightjars here, churring on the open heath. The North Star, also known as the Pole Star or Polaris, is a very bright star and is always fixed above the north point of the horizon. It has been used for over 2,000 years to help navigators at sea and on land find their way. Until the end of grazing in the early 20th century Black Down was mostly open grazed heath. When the grazing animals left, trees began to grow and the wildlife disappeared. The heath is now being restored and grazed again and many species of wildlife are returning. 4. Head a further 65 feet (20m) or so along the main path and then turn left. Ignore the first turn to the left and then turn right at a crossroads to the Beech Hanger Woodland at point 4. Turn sharp left for the path back to the car park. 5. Take the main path back northwards towards the car park.

HASLEMERE ART Society will be holding its 123 Annual Exhibition of members’ recent work next month. The Society was originally founded in 1894 to promote art and the interest in arts in Haslemere. These founding members included Margery Allingham, Axel Haig and Walter Tyndale. The current exhibition will cover two galleries and include approximately 200 works by around 50 professional and amateur artists. There will be a variety of work in most media and include painting and drawing in oil, acrylic, watercolour, pencil, sculpture, 3D, ceramics and craft. It will include many diverse styles and techniques, from traditional to very modern. It will be a vibrant show with something to interest everyone. During the exhibition several members will be painting and showcasing their work. The Alan Thomson Award will be chosen and there will be two People’s Choice awards - one for painting and the second for sculpture craft and ceramics. These are voted on by visitors to the exhibition, so do come along and put in your vote. Participating artists will include well-known local artist Chairman, Roger Dellar. Roger is a member of Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and Oil and the Pastel Society and has been a member of The Wapping Group since 1996. He shows and teaches throughout the country and received numerous awards and prizes. The latest is the prestigious John Goss Prize awarded by the judges of Hertford Art Society for best in show for his painting ‘Sunday Morning Wexford’. Others include Clare Bowen, David Paynter and Sonya Vine, who have all just taken part in SAOS Surrey Artists’ Open Studios. Clare is interested in light and atmosphere and is currently concentrating on plein air painting. Since 2016 she has a August 2017

discipline of painting every day and likes to write an accompanying blog which can be followed on her website. David is a member of the Surrey Sculpture Society. He is inspired by nature and often likes to accompany his work with a poem. These words come to him as he creates the piece. He hopes this accompanying poem will explain and enhance the work bringing more understanding and enjoyment. Sonya qualified at Cheltenham College of Art. She is a figurative and plein air painter interested in light and dark. She exhibits in London including The Mall Gallery and throughout the country. Three other exhibitors include Colin Wilson, who has been invited to exhibit in a gallery in Tokyo and has just been exhibiting at Yvonne Arnaud Art at The Mill Studio Guildford. Robbie Murdoch gained an interview in the BBC painting challenge programme and has also taken part in Art In Action, a young arts programme demonstrating to local schools. Finally, Rachel Vitolo is an active member of Shared Art, a group of artists who meet weekly at The Hub in Hindhead. They mount an annual exhibition and explore various creative themes. Rachel is currently interested in abstract art with acrylic pouring and resin. FIND OUT MORE For further details, please visit the website at www.haslemere.com/artsoc.

Players meet at St Mary’s Church for coffee and registration at 10.15am. For further details go to www.3countiesbridge. com or email l.paynter@btopenworld.com.
