Since computer was introduced to man in 1975, both man and computer have not been the same. It is amazing how one piece of technology has changed our lives for good. One very exciting aspect of computer is the good use to which it can be put. The ability to use computer skills to solve problems, by creating programmes and apps that can plan solutions simply tells one that if there is one skill required for the future, it is in technology. Men who by nature are problem solvers have dominated this terrain. The ability to solve problems is a trait that is useful in life in general but not many women like sciences and things technical, so they stay away leaving the few who can square it up with their male counterparts. Conscious of this fact, Abisoye Ajayi Akinfolarin, founder of Pearl Africa Foundation, entered the Tech space with one thing in mind-to pull other women up especially, young girls through her project, GirlsCoding. This laudable project by our cover personality is the one that caught the eye of CNN last year. She talks about it to our correspondent Linda Orajekwe. bisoye Ajayi Akinfolarin is the Founder, Pearl Africa Foundation, a foundation dedicated to empowering the girl child using technology. In 2018, the 33 year old Business Administration graduate of University of Lagos (UNILAG) was nominated along with eight others as change-makers for CNN Heroes. That nomination earned her a place as the first Nigerian to be so nominated for this award. The nomination was in recognition of her exemplary work in the tech space through her project, GirlsCoding. It was a pleasure to meet this amazing woman who through her efforts many young girls can now say, “I can”. Abisoye steps out of the car, clad in an African floral print midi dress and a pair of flat slippers that speak more about her style- comfort. Her face looks bare and fresh; the perfect canvas for Michael to do his magical makeover on. In this encounter, she talks about her life as a social entrepreneur, and how raising young girls shot her into limelight, and blessed her with the love of her life.
Tell us about your journey into tech….. My journey in the world of technology started at the age of ten. During school break, my brother took me to his friend’s business café. There, I began to appreciate technology, learning how to type, and modifying text in Microsoft word was interesting for me. It became more interesting after high school when I joined an IT Audit firm as an intern. It was at this point that I really discovered my love for computer programming. How challenging was the experience? It was challenging because I was going into a male-dominated world. I had little or no knowledge about computer programming. I joined the IT audit firm [EDP Audit and security associate firm] with the knowledge of graphics that I learnt from NIIT. It was challenging because, I was in an environment where everyone was into computer programming, but I learnt a lot. So with its challenges, it was rewarding. How did you start the Pearls Africa project? Pearls Africa was established in April 2012 as a Non-governmental organization, designed to reach out to girls in rural communities with functional skills, to help them gain economic independence. It all started from my personal experience and the challenge to survive as a young girl. However, Pearls Africa Foundation is focused on promoting the cause and advancement of vulnerable young girls and women, through different initiatives such as GirlsCoding, EmpoweredHands [Vocational Skills], GC Mentors [Mentoring for GirlsCoding], GirlsInSTEM. What challenges did you face running an NGO like Pearls Africa in Nigeria and how did you resolve them? In the beginning, it was really difficult training girls from an under-served community. There were a lot of persuasions, trying to convince their parents to make them see the reasons why their girls need to be equipped. We had financial constraints too. We were able to build track records overtime and partners now believe in what we do. Parents were also able to see what their girls could do and the benefits of the projects to them as parents, and to the community at large. As obvious as this seems, what was the need for you to have an all-girls project? We believe that every young girl, irrespective of background should be given
the equal opportunity as her male counterparts thereby, bringing about gender equality and girl child empowerment. Statistics reveal that 730 million people live in extreme poverty globally, and about 90 million of these are in Nigeria. Of these numbers globally, 50% are under 18. Women are the worst hit as they have less paid jobs and less education compared to men. This is why eradicating poverty is one of the core focuses of my work at Pearls Africa, by equipping young girls from underserved communities with skills of the future, especially STEM. We give them a chance at education in technology that translates to economic opportunities for them. These young women can now aspire to greatness, and become positive contributors to the economy The girls you teach coding, what would you say the development has been like and how does that make you feel? The development so far has been amazing. Our girls have embraced it and they are really doing well. They created different projects from apps to web applications, to help their communities both financially and socially. These projects were created by different teams who saw a great need for such projects in their community. Can you share some of these projects with us? So, our flagship program Girlscoding started about four years ago with many of the participants from Makoko community, a floating slums characterized by very poor living conditions. The girls had no hope for a successful future, their self-esteem was very low. But our program has been able to help them boost their self-esteem. They now believe in their abilities and know their rights. By learning how to code, they have been able to develop their critical thinking ability, which is one very important skill everyone needs; to be able to think reasonably, objectively and clearly. They have grown mentally, with the capability of recognizing problems in their communities and thinking of possible ways of solving them using technology. This has made them change agents and leaders, thinking up remarkable projects that are now highly beneficial to the community. Some of the projects are: MAKOKO FRESH (www. makokofresh.com.ng), an e-Commerce platform that connects buyers of seafood to the fishermen who live in Makoko, making the fishermen sell more at a better price and make a good living for their families. We also have
the BREAK THE BLADE (www.breaktheblade.org): A web application created by some of our girls as a team, to solve the problem of Female Gentile Mutilation (FGN) in our country. This platform sensitizes people on the negativity of the practice, and provides a likely solution to the victims and potential victims. HOPE BASKET (www.hopebasket.com.ng): A project built to help get de-cluttered materials from the “haves” to the “have-nots” especially, the internally displaced persons in their respective camps in Nigeria. In the future, our girls will work as software engineers in companies around the world, some will become female tech entrepreneurs, creating jobs and lifting their communities from poverty. What are some of the things you’ve learned training these young women? “Brilliance may be evenly distributed but opportunities are not”. I have learnt that everyone can be brilliant but lack the opportunity to express their talents. For Instance, one of the girls from the IDP camp who trained with us, who were supported by Pearls Africa and Partners with her school fees to the University, is currently on a first-class and doing very well academically. How does it feel being among the few women in the tech space? There are less than 20% of females in tech space. However, being in the tech space has helped me to see the need to empower more girls in technology. That’s the main reason for the existence of GirlsCoding. When you found out you’ve been nominated for CNN heroes, how did you feel and how has the experience helped you and your project? I was shocked initially and excited at the same time (laugh). Being nominated was also an opportunity for me to do more, apparently, recognition brings more responsibility. It has also helped the brand so far, to gain more trust from organizations and individuals. It has also helped to increase support and partnership. Most importantly, many of our girls have gotten an educational scholarship as a result of this and it has also boosted their self-confidence. For the longest time, tech has been presented as something too technical for the female mind to grasp, as a creator and a teacher, is it that technical? INTERVIEW technical when there is passion and opportunity to learn. When you realize you have a passion for something, you find yourself willing to learn and do more. So basically, you will be faced with the fear of how am I going to deal with it? But in the end, it’s all about giving instructions to computers and solving problems. Moreover, culture and traditions have not helped in this regard. Most girls were not brought up to create, but nurtured to use what has been created. This has got to change. Girls and boys can be creators of tech and not relegating girls and women to mere users of tech. Operating in a male-dominated industry like yours, have there been times when you’ve faced patriarchy? How did you handle it? Obviously, in our society men hold more power and women are largely excluded from it. So yes, there were times when I was faced with patriarchy because, I was in a male-dominated industry. I stayed focused and kept investing in myself. For example, studying more, taking more courses, ignoring what was said around me but also, I tried to prove myself at any given opportunity and that has helped me a lot. With women taking their place in the different sectors in Nigeria, where is that one place you’ll want women to make their presence known and why? I wish I can name other industries, but I really want women to be known globally in the world of technology; because this has, and is still helping me through my journey in life. Besides this, one of the few sectors that girls and women are underrepresented. What do you wish can be better in the Nigerian tech space? Provision of infrastructure is one major start. Basically, we need more technical instruments and programs in our country, because the world is globally changing and technology has become a larger part of it. So I feel our Nigerian Government should invest more in tech as it will help to build the economic growth of the country, and create opportunities for young people to work and learn. Also, the educational curriculum of schools should be updated to reflect industry-relevant courses and not what is presently available. What advice would you give your younger self if you can? I would advise my younger self to be strong, hardworking, focused, develop good character, acquire functional skills, volunteer as best as you can because greatness lies in the act of service. Who are some of the women that (are) inspire/ inspiring you? There are many women who inspire me and to list a few, I’ll say Funke Opeke, Katherine Johnson, Mobolaji Johnson, Obiageli Ezekwesili, Ty Bello, Tara Durotoye, Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama. What’s a regular day like for Abisoye? (Laughs) Work, Work, Work….. I wish I can add something different but my life is mostly about work for me. With how tasking your work can be, do you ever feel like you’re missing out? I won’t say I am missing out on anything because I get to inspire people every day. I get to learn new things, meet new people when I travel. I have been doing a lot of that in recent years. So, every time I spend with our Girls at GirlsCoding is refreshing. Have you ever gotten to a place where you feel overwhelmed and you want out? How did you get your mojo back? The beginning days of Pearls Africa, seeing how difficult it was to raise funds to empower young girls and not paying for the service we render. Back then what I did was close my laptop, shutdown work took a course online, watch movies, go for swimming and of course hang out with friends to talk about other things not necessarily related to work and after that break, I jump back into work again.

How do you handle running a home and running your business? Family is everything, so I try to balance work and home and ensure nothing disturbs work or home. Besides, my husband makes my life easy with his endless support in the cause of the Girl Child which I believe passionately about. Tell us about your husband, how did you meet? We met at work o; we are both in the same IT space. Someone referred me to him to get something done and when I got to him, he was with about five of his male friends. I did not know them neither did they know me. I did not want them to start any conversation with me. So when they asked me about my occupation, I told them I was a fashion consultant. I knew the moment I said that, they would leave me alone and that is what happened. If I told them that I was a techie, the conversation would have lasted for up to five hours and I did not want that. But my cover didn’t last for long because, I and my husband kept talking after the day we met and from my conversation and the terminologies I was using, he realized that I may not be a fashion person. So I later gave him my profile (Laughs). What’s a marriage like with both you and your husband in the tech space? It’s great because we’re both with our computers working but we take breaks to spend time together. How would you describe your fashion style? I love my culture, so I would always love to dress in the African attire - corporate wears with a touch of Ankara or Adire fabric If you have to rate your style on a scale of 1-10, how stylish would you say you are? I believe fashion is relative; fashion to you may not be the same with me. But to be honest, fashion to me means comfort. I must be comfortable and presentable. So on a scale of 1-10, I will say 6.5… (Laughs) What’s your favourite piece of fashion item and why?

My favourite fashion item would be dresses or Pantsuit or Blazers and that’s because I’m comfortable in them. I hope they like me too (Laughs). If you have to do it all over again, what will you change? Hmmm, I feel like I would have wanted my mother beside me, to watch me grow or rather have that motherly figure and feeling. With how your life has evolved, what’s that one thing you’ll say life has taught you? Life taught me a lot but in all, it taught me how to survive in any kind of situation I find myself. It has also taught me to embrace opportunities, be prepared when opportunities show up, and fight to survive but while trying to survive, reach out to people and raise them along the way. I have learned that regardless of where anyone is coming from, with education, hard work, smart work, consistency and God on your side, you can be great in life. Let’s talk about future projects, what are you up to? At the moment, it’s the busiest time of the year for us. We are currently running Summer Code Camp in partnership with Union Bank, in Lagos and Jos. Also, we are currently in an expansion phase and maintaining the quality of service we render as an organization while still making an impact. We are also in conversation with different State Governments to replicate our projects in their States, thereby reaching out to more public schools and Youth in Nigeria. My experience has birthed a book. I published my first book this year called, I Woke Up At 30, and it is about utilizing what I have for global impact rather than comparing myself to others. What advice do you have for other young women trying to find their purpose in life? Be you! Ensure to always add value wherever you are. Always volunteer for good causes and have a mindset of making and leaving things and situations better than you met them, and learn to take every challenge that comes to you as a stepping stone to greatness.

don’t know what’s going around, but everyone I know is fighting some horrible virus—general weakness, mild headaches, horrid sore throat a cough and the sniffles—and I am absolutely fed up. Not sick enough to go see the doctor, but unwell enough to make sure you just want to sit on your couch sipping copious amounts of honey, ginger, and lemon tea. This is Oddbod and the City – My Lagos Adventure When I started my laser hair removal journey at Airesthetics, I promised I would give an update. I thought I would have to wait until I had finished the full treatment course, which I had been told might take about 6 sessions. I am only three sessions in and I must report that already, the difference is clear. This is not a hoax everybody, laser hair removal really does work and it is totally worth investigation for permanent removal of unwanted hair.

Somto Nwachukwu returns with creative showcase of ‘The Art of Design By Linda Orajekwe Ekene Agu, Claud & Adaeze
Somto Nwachukwu, returns with the second edition of his creative event exhibition, ‘The Art of Design’ where he showcases different event themes to an intimate gathering of clients, family, and friends. The event took place at the rooftop of the Lekki Coliseum where the creative artist, gave a beautiful display of themed event decors that got guests thinking of their next occasion. On display were five creative themes; The Kingdom of Wakanda, Crazy Rich Asians, Frozen, a Disney story, Garden of Eden, The Queen’s Court, Aladdin and Prince of Ababwa. These themes had a well- detailed depiction of its inspirations, showing guests that Somto and his team of creatives, can bring their wildest fantasies to life on their special day. Speaking on the need to have creative events such as the Art Of Design, Creative director of Events by Claud, Somto Nwanchukwu, stated that “Everybody loves different things and with the way Disney is changing the game with their animated films, it has done nothing but inspire us to create more. We watched films like Aladdin, Frozen 2, and we felt really inspired by how they’re so creative. And that’s one of the things that motivated us to organize “The Art of Design” this year. We plan to make it annual to keep showing people that there’s so much we can do.”

Susan Thomas-Fajana, indicated the readiness of the awards to return to the continent for the 10th anniversary, having been held at the UK parliament for the past three years. She noted that The continent has the highest remittance from across the Atlantic, compared to other continents, and this could be carefully tailored towards meaningful investment on the continent.
