“WE REPLACED EVERY LIGHT, INSIDE AND OUT.” — Columbia Machine

Upgrading lighting was definitely a “no brainer” for our facility in Vancouver. The retrofit now saves the company more than seventy-five thousand dollars annually and has improved working conditions. It’s helped kick-start the process of looking at energy waste more seriously, which we see as part of a larger commitment to being a viable business for the long haul.

Outsmart energy waste. It works. Learn more at clarkpublicutilities.com

CHAMBER NEWS AND UPDATES

Chamber Lists Transportation Priorities FROM THE PAC CHAIR ERIC OLMSTED, Online Support

Your Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce has given the State Legislature a list of our transportation priorities in Southwest Washington. Why do we care so much about transportation? Investment in our infrastructure is a critical key to economic development. Companies have many choices where to locate and we want them to come here. We must provide the basic building blocks they need to be prosperous. That includes a skilled workforce, available and competitively priced land, reliable and inexpensive power and roads that allow their people and products to move safely and efficiently. This is why the Chamber is working with state legislators to include several new transportation projects in their statewide funding package now under con-

sideration. The current proposal raises the gas tax by 10.5 cents a gallon. Projects for Spokane, Seattle, Tacoma and Auburn are included. But there are no projects for Southwest Washington. Clark County’s unemployment rate remains high, nearly 40% above the state average. Since transportation jobs help create short term and long term jobs, we want our share of projects. Here’s a list we gave state legislators asking for their help for Southwest Washington: • • • • •

City of Vancouver – Mill Plain Boulevard from the Port of Vancouver to I-5 Clark County – Fairgrounds Interchange Camas-Washougal – SR 14 improvements Ridgefield – Pioneer Street Overpass Battle Ground – SR 501 and SR 502

improvements Each project helps move freight and people with the greatest degree of safety and the least amount of time. These projects increase capacity to allow for new developments and encourage economic growth. Your chamber has built a strong reputation at the state level as an active advocate for business interests in Southwest Washington. Vancouver is the 4th largest city in the state and yet because we are far removed from the Puget Sound we are not always given the consideration we’re due. As your Public Affairs Chairman, and in partnership with the board we want to make sure the voice of Vancouver business is heard loud and clear.

“Shared Business Priorities” for the 2014 Legislative Session Will Be Released at the December Event What is it?

December Event

Each year the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce partners with the Columbia River Economic Development Council and Identity Clark County to compile Southwest Washington’s “Shared Business Priorities” of Clark County for the upcoming Legislative Session. This living document has been vetted through the GVCC’s October Public Affairs Committee meeting and focuses on Infrastructure, Economic Development and education.

On December 11th please join the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce at the Vancouver Hilton for the 2014 Legislative Outlook Breakfast from 7-9 am. We will welcome Washington’s Representatives from the 17th, 18th and 49th districts and they will inform businesses and citizens about their upcoming legislative session and their priorities. The cost is $40/ person (includes breakfast). This event is sponsored by Mackay Sposito.

October GVCC PAC Meeting Pictured Below.

A Public Affairs Note from:

DON RUSSO, GVCC CHAIRMAN

Our advocacy efforts have been varied and far reaching in 2013. We’ve helped the Kiggins Theater successfully change the state law to allow them a license to sell beer and wine. We’ve advocated for clusters of businesses that are facing permit issues that are slowing their development projects. For large sectors, such as retail at the state level; we’ve successfully retained tax exemptions that bring business to our local retailers. We are active partners with statewide organizations, chambers and local groups.

Four Tips to Better Utilize Your Membership MEMBERSHIP CHAIR ERIC SAWYER, BBSI Preferred Payroll

If you join the GVCC and get involved, good things will happen. The most important word in the previous sentence was: INVOLVED. If you “work” your Chamber membership (just like a gym membership) results will happen. Our Membership Committee is comprised of members who’ve increased their business leads/sales so substantially that they serve to increase membership benefit awareness. If the Chamber were a gym, our membership committee members would be the athletes on the wall that transformed from flab to fab! Here are a few tips from our Membership Committee on how to maximize your membership: ONE: Attend and sponsor events. The Chamber hosts a multitude of networking events ev-

ery month; something for everyone. There are morning Leads & Needs events (twice monthly), and evening “Business After Hours” events. Plus, there are many GVCC signature events like the Annual Officer installation and “Business & Leadership Awards” event; and in March 2014 “Vancouver Goes Hollywood.” Once you start attending some of the 70+ events hosted each year, you will begin to build your very own network of people that know who you are and what you do. Even if you meet someone that isn’t a direct client, they are future spokespeople for your business to their family and friends. TWO: Take it a step further and get involved with a committee like the Membership Committee, or the Public Affairs Committee, or consider becoming an Ambassador and sporting the prestigious red coat and just see what happens. Your membership investment in the GVCC will begin to stretch and your brand will be exposed to our 1,000+ GVCC members. THREE: Think about advertising. Part of your membership provides you access to low-cost advertising. There are digital options on the vancouverusa.com website, the eNewsletter “Business Matters,” and the completely revamped magazine “Vancouver VISION Magazine.” Advertising rates start at just $75. FOUR: Keep your information updated. Your membership includes a listing in our online business directory and our hard-copy print edition that comes out annually. Also, part of your membership includes your ability to post events on the Chamber’s website AND send press releases for “member announcements” within the weekly eNewsletter. Keep your Chamber in the loop with all your business updates!

A Programming Note from:

DON RUSSO, GVCC CHAIRMAN Our new Government Contracting Program has attracted 200 businesses in the first six months. They are learning how to sell goods and services to the local, county, state and federal government agencies.

There is a Government Contracting 101 Class at the GVCC on the morning of November 5th. There is no cost to attend I encourage any business owner to learn more about these opportunities!

What are some Techniques to Keep your Team Sharp? QUESTION #1

Custom Word Puzzles build Mental Sharpness and Company Knowledge Research has shown that remaining engaged in cognitive activities will help to prevent memory loss. MENTAL SHARPNESS

Z ZZZ ZZZ

Working Harder and Longer Hours Decreases Productivity We have all been there: Deals are cooking, deadlines are looming. Our teams are putting in long, hard hours. But whether in lean times or boom times, the long hours take their toll on mental acuity. I lived through this when I took a company public. My accounting team worked nights Scott Swenson and weekends for months leading up to the IPO. Ast. Professor of As the regulatory deadline loomed, we worked Management harder and longer, but with less to show for our WSU work. We were slower to solve problems, we were less creative, and we made mistakes. I was a naïve Vancouver new manager then. Wiser now, I would advise the team to do three things to stay alert: 1. Get up and MOVE AROUND. Go for a walk, exercise, get blood flowing to the brain. 2. Have FACE-to-FACE interaction. Too much screen time dulls the brain. Real human contact triggers healthy brain activity. 3. Go home and get at least seven hours of sleep per night. Trying to get by on less sleep is a false economy. Busy times are necessary and can be fun, but not if the team turns into the walking dead.

Examining “Role Clarity” is Crucial for High Functioning Teams It is essential that leaders keep their teams sharp and focused. Over time as teams Kevin Hiebert, develop, mature President and grow team Resonate members can begin to experience role confusion. The remedy is to move from role confusion to role clarity. Role clarity is being clear on “What am I here to do?” Evaluating role clarity is an ongoing maintenance task of every team leader. Here is a simple practice to examine and clarify team roles: First, describe from your perspective, in 2-3 sentences, what is the role of each of your team members? Secondly, ask each

individual team member to define their role on the team in 2-3 sentences. (Some team members may need some time to formulate a concise answer.) Third, ask yourself the following set of questions to further diagnosis your team’s role clarity. How is my role description similar to that of the team member? How is it different? What questions need to be asked to begin a conversation around role clarity? And, finally, have a listening conversation with each team member. This practice can be done as regular team maintenance. Roles over time drift and as a leader it is your role to have conversations that bring focus and clarity.

Tips to De-Stress Your Team and Yourself to Avoid Burnout WORKPLACE WELLNESS QUESTION #2

DE-STRESSING

Humor Can Bond Team and De-Stress the Workplace As the leader of my team of highly focused individuals handling payroll processing for our clients, I try to keep things in the office fun. To process accurate payroll on time, things can naturally get a little stressful from time to time. We start the week off with Monday morning staff meetings, with what I call “success stories” from around the table. It can be work related or personal, just something from the past week that went well. Eric Sawyer This has basically Area Manager turned into comedy In my office BBSI hour. we like to laugh and Preferred have a good time. Payroll I promote laughter in a variety of ways. I utilize it as the mechanism that will not only allow for the release of built-up stress, but also because laughter bonds my team together. Another humor related de-stressing technique we utilize is a dry erase board in the kitchen; it’s become joke central. If you have a cohesive unit of professionals that have each other’s backs, you’ve got something special going. I believe laughter is a key to life.

Shallow Breathing & Breath Holding is Common in the Workplace, Due to Stress Breathe! You are probably thinking “DUH, I am breathing!” Are you doing it properly to get the maximum benefits? Most of the time, we employ shallow breathing and often in times of mounting stress we even hold our breath for short periods. If you find yourself in a stressful situation, take a breather. Find a

quiet spot and just focus on your breath. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of 6 filling your lungs to capacity. Slowly exhale through your mouth, also to a count of 6, expelling completely. Try this for 5 to 10 minutes. Using deep breathing, you get more oxygen entering your system helping to clear the mind, increase circulation and calm your

Journalist’s Example of “Write and Release” Leads to Lowered Stress I began a new routine a few weeks ago to work through the job stress I’ve been feeling lately. I take time at the Jerry Goodstein end of the workday to reflect on any positive experiences Professor of I’ve had during the day. I write them down, along with Management & MBA Program why these experiences made me feel good. The other Faculty Director day I wrote about a conversation I had with one of my College of Business students facing some personal challenges and how honored I felt that this student put his trust in me. I started WSU-VAN putting this routine into practice after reading a recent (9/4) “At Work” column by Wall Street Journal reporter, Melissa Korn. In the article she highlighted recent research that shows the power of this routine in lowering employee workplace stress levels – in as little as two weeks. I thought if this kind of reflection and writing can work for them, why not for me and you?

In other words, sometimes Tahira Probst, the best Ph.D. way to Interim Assistant destress is Vice Chancellor of Academic to develop Affairs habits that Professor of reduce your Psychology exposure to WSU-VAN workplace stress in the first place. One common stressor is the constant interruption of email throughout the day. Messages pop up “begging” to be answered creating the impression that they require your immediate attention. As a result, em-

ployees often either feel anxious when they cannot immediately respond or stressed because they have interrupted their workflow to do so. To avoid this, disable those email desktop alerts and let your “frequent email” colleagues know that you will immediately respond to messages flagged as urgent, but have set aside dedicated times throughout the day to respond to other email. Hopefully, you can then focus more on your longer-term work projects without feeling constant pressure to drop what you’re doing to respond to yet another email.

One of the hardest things about exercising is finding the time to work it into your day. The good news is you can see benefits even if you simply fit in a few minutes of exercise in here and there. Start by taking 15 minutes of your work day to focus on strength and flexibility. To keep your joints healthy it is important to reverse your posture and incorporate exercises that will help minimize muscle imbalances. This means if you spend much of your day

sitting in a chair hunched over a computer, you need to stretch your back and neck in the opposite direction to avoid injury. You can download and print our recommended lunchtime exercise routine including pictures and descriptions at www.mypeakmotion.com/ blog from the Blog titled ‘Fit at Work.’ These exercises are quick, easy to follow and can be done almost anywhere.

We racked up over 160,000 points during the eightweek period. That’s roughly 2,688 hours! Weekly in-house yoga, abs and stretching classes, training runs for the Shamrock 5, 8, or 15k, cycling, or Stair Climb breaks, all help keep busy season stress in check and camaraderie high. While we love the good stuff (long-live dessert day!), we redesigned our busy season fare to include more vegetables, leaner proteins and more salads. It’s not just about February, March and April. We train for busy season year-round and welcome newcomers to our dodge ball, basketball and Hood to Coast Relay teams. Perkins thrives on fitness.

Keep It Simple: Kill Germs with Purell Around the Office

KILLS 99.99% OF GERMS

Here at Southwest Office Supply, we encourage our folks to use Purell Hand Sanitizer products to ward off the germs associated with cold and flu. Each member of our team has access to individual bottles

and desk dispensers, and we have stationed wall-mounted and freestanding dispensers at various locations around the office and warehouse. Like most businesses, we need team

members healthy and at work each day if we’re going give each of our clients the great customer service that we’ve promised. Our advice (and, it’s true, I’m not a doctor): use Purell Hand Sanitizer

products liberally for the next several months. Your family, friends and customers will thank you.

Former Ambassador Memorialized with Award

A Special Note From: DARCY ALTIZER VP, MEMBER SERVICES Although each one of the GVCC Ambassadors do a tremendous amount of work for the Chamber, every year the Chamber identifies one Ambassador as the “Ambassador of the Year.” This honor is determined by a variety of measurements including: public relations, event participation, mentoring new and veteran members, in addition to a vote amongst peers. In memory of Wally Hornberger, who passed in July 2013, we feel it is most appropriate to honor his legacy by rebranding the award as the “Wally Hornberger Ambassador of the Year Award.” Wally genuinely cared about the Clark County community. He generously donated his time and resources in RIGHT: 2012 Luncheon photo with Ambassadors. TOP RIGHT: GVCC Chamber Chariman: Don Russo, Sherri McMillan, Santa and Tamara Fuller.

making Southwest Washington a great place to live, work, and play. Wally was one of the Chamber’s original Ambassadors from the team’s inception in 1985. Through his exuberant personality and caring heart, he embodied all of the characteristics of the ultimate Ambassador.

New Community Heroes Featured at Event 2012 Ambassador of the Year with the Vancouver Fire Department This year we’ve chosen the Vancouver Fire Department as our “Holiday Heroes” and we encourage you to bring a small to medium sized teddy bear or any stuffed animal for the Toy Drive! The Vancouver Fire Department will be on hand during the event to pick up these stuffed animals. They deliver them to distressed children year around! Pictured from left to tight: Matt Thierfelder, Ryan Morrisey, Barb Holbrook (red jacket), Mark Johnston and Judson Mccauley.

“I’ve always loved community service. There have been too many highlights to name one as my favorite this year! I serve with a great team, who make every event fun!” -BARB HOLBROOK, Pritchard Orthodontics

Year-Round Vancouver Firefighter Programs In addition to this “Teddy Bear Toy Drive” the Vancouver Firefighters are very active in the community. They’ve launched a warm coat drive this year: www.operationwarm. org and union members have generously donated $1,000 to get the program off the ground. They are hoping to raise additional funds this year through their website. These coats will go to school aged children that local schools have identify as children in need. Other charitable events include: Fire in the Park. Get more info, including sponsorship information at: www.fireinthepark.com. This event raised about $25,000 this year. Another program is: MDA fill the boot, where firefighters collect money to support MDA. They were able to raise about $20,000 this year alone and were featured in the Columbian for their efforts.
