The event sold out, with a wide variety of businesses representing diverse industries, including manufacturing, lodging, and logistics. The workshop covered a wide variety of topics to assist businesses to determine if pursuing government contracting was the right fit. Procurement system registrations, business certifications, and market research resources were all discussed. Many partners were also in attendance, including Small Business Administration (SBA), Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Native PTAC, and SCORE, providing additional information about resources and services to local businesses. Many businesses in attendance have scheduled follow-up appointments with the PTAC Business Counselor to receive one-on-one assistance specific to their business. News From The Head of the Chamber LOOKING TO FALL ELECTIONS: CLARK COUNTY WILL ELECT 15 “FREEHOLDER” POSITIONS AND CHAMBER CO-HOSTS VOTERS FORUM I had hoped to report back to you the progress of the Washington S t a t e Legislature but as of press time, there is little BY DON RUSSO GVCC PUBLIC AFFAIRS to report. So I COMMITTEE CHAIR Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt turn my attention to a fascinating and important election shaping up this November. Yes, there is a mayor’s race, a city council race, a Port race: all critically important this fall. Your Chamber will partner with the League of Women Voters for a candidates forum to be held July 11th at 6:30pm at the Vancouver Community Library. There is no charge. We hope you can join us to hear from the candidates first hand. Also on the ballot in November will be a new and unfamiliar elected position called a Freeholder. State law allows counties to create a county charter, much like a county constitution, which would define how Clark County is governed. The County Commissioners have agreed

July/August Edition

to begin the process of drafting a county charter. Under state law, the authority to draft the charter is given to 15 citizens who are elected by the voters to serve as freeholders. Once elected, the freeholders can decide to increase the number of commissioners. They can reduce full time commissioners to part-time with parttime pay. They can provide voters more authority to place initiatives and referendums on future ballots. They can also, as has been done in other counties, implement a new County Executive. This elected position would provide oversight for and serve as a check and balance to the authority of the commissioners. Who are the 15 men and women who will have such significant authority and responsibility? How about you? Are you ready to get involved and help shape the future of our community? Throughout the county, citizens are being actively recruited to run for these 15 seats. There are five seats within each of the three existing commissioner’s districts. The top 5 vote-getters in each district will become Freeholders. These are non-partisan seats so there is no need to declare a party preference. The Freeholder filing period is limited and runs August 5-9th. For specifics on candidate qualifications, candidacy declaration forms, details on filing options and additional information, visit the Clark County Elections Department online at www. clark.wa.gov/elections. The Chamber’s Public Affairs Committee is committed to providing information to voters about the process and the issues. This is an important period in our county’s history. The Chamber encourages everyone to consider becoming involved. We also want to remind all eligible voters to be sure their registration

STARTING ON JULY 1ST THE CHAMBER IS TAKING NOMINATIONS FOR 2013 ‘BUSINESS & LEADERSHIP AWARDS’ It’s time to honor our businesses that make a difference in our community. The 2013 “Southwest Washington BY KELLY PARKER Business and Leadership GVCC CEO/PRESIDENT Awards,” hosted by the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce is officially taking nominations until August 16th.

The Community Champion Award acknowledges a business man or woman who has taken a lead in providing positive change in the community. It’s created in memory of Donna Cantonwine, long time GVCC CEO who knew how to move mountains with a smile, a positive attitude and a fierce determination.

The GVCC launched this awards program to highlight our businesses and individuals who invest in our community and in their own business - with their resources and their time. You can nominate yourself or a fellow business. Winners will be announced at the SALUTE’ Chamber Leadership Awards to be held September 19th 2013 at the Vancouver Hilton.

This year we introduce the Business Start-Up to Watch. Vancouver has an uptick in new business and we will acknowledge the effort and determination that it takes to launch a new business off the ground. This award is for a business in the first years of operation that has demonstrated tenacity.

THERE ARE FOUR CATEGORIES: The Business Community Builder Award acknowledges community service performed by business that enhances the community. We acknowledge a small business with less than 25 employees and a large businesses with more than 25 employees. The Community Statesman Award acknowledges current elected officials who represent and uphold the interests of both business and community. The award is in honor of Former State Representative Bill Fromhold who represented our community with distinction and honor.

We do this because we see the heroics in everyday activities among our businesses. We see companies donating time and resources to help our community while growing their own business. We recognize the time and effort it requires to be a good corporate citizen. We applaud all our businesses for the good deeds they do in our community. We want to acknowledge while reminding ourselves to always look for opportunities to serve. ast

event recap THE 11TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT While the weather didn’t shine like previous years, our sponsors did on the course at Camas Meadows for the GVCC’s 11th Annual Golf Tournament on June 13th. Players spots and sponsorships were sold out in mid May - record time for this event. This golf tournament is the best in Southwest Washington and for good reason! Players received breakfast, golf carts, goodie bags, festivities at each of the 18 holes and a wonderful bbq luncheon with prizes galore. This year’s title sponsor was Columbia Bank, the title sponsor since day one! A great community partner. They were also at hole number ten with a tee display passing out wonderful cigars themed with “USA” decorations. The event’s overall theme was ‘Around the World in 18 Holes,” with each sponsor choosing a country to

represent on the green. Comcast Business and Comcast Spotlight were course sponsors and BHP Billiton was the Nike tent sponsor, providing $25 Nike bucks to participants. The luncheon was brought to players by Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center and our supporting sponsors were iQ Credit Union and Chevron. A special thank you to our committed media sponsor: The Columbian. BALL DROP WINNER: WALLY MELENDEZ

Funded by a grant from The Parks Foundation of Clark County, the program aims to keep kids healthfully active all summer by giving their parents a one-stop shop of information about opportunities for kids. Check it out at facebook.com/VancouverSummerAdventure. More than 20 local, independent businesses will be hiding a fugitive this summer: Waldo. Sponsored by Vintage Books, 6613 E. Mill Plain Blvd., the Where’s Waldo hunt

will take families into the businesses, introducing families to what they offer while kids search for the 6-inch Waldo figure in each location. The promotion runs throughout July, with kids who fill their passports entered to win prizes from the participating merchants. Kazoodles, Vancouver’s local toy store at 13503 SE Mill Plain Blvd., offers free storytimes every Tuesday, Wednesday playshops for a variety of interests, and Thursday Crafternoons. All are free or low-cost. The calendar can be found at www.kazoodlestoys.com/ events. The store also involves children in a summer reading program, where their reading benefits cats at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington; volunteer-made cat blankets

are donated in the children’s names according to how much they’ve read. Steamers & Screamers, 8400 NE Vancouver Mall Dr., offers classes for kids throughout the summer. The cafe features an indoor play park for youngsters (the screamers) while their parents enjoy coffeeshop pleasures (the steamers). Learn more at www.steamersandscreamers.com. The GVCC’s Special Section: CLARK COUNTY RECREATION

We start our day at about 5 am. I don’t have to set my alarm. Nick wakes up, stretches and shakes violently causing all of the bling on his collar to create a noise somewhere in between banging on a garbage can and an annoying wind chime. Yes Nick I know it’s time to get up.

Earth-friendly is in, and being a tree-hugger means you can sit at the cool kids table. But in this economy, when parents and grandparents think of activities that are “local and sustainable,” it may sound more like “cheap and easy to get to.” Ever have the experience of trying to think of something fun and close by, and suddenly forgetting everything that exists within 50 miles? It happens.

After taking care of our morning duties, it’s off to our a great local coffee shop, The Java House off Columbia. After a large dark house coffee to go, we’re headed out to the Ellen Davis Trail. The trail head is at Leverich Park and follows Burnt Bridge Creek through the historic BPA gardens. You then head through the forested area in the Minnehaha neighborhood and end at the Ross Dog Park where both Nick and I get to be social with my fellow dog owners and their canines. We especially like the EDT because it’s not very crowded. Keep in mind that this trail is multi-use, open to cyclists. After our morning workout, I’m hungry. Really hungry. I grab a quick shower and it’s off to The Grant House for a bite.

As luck would have it, twin gems are hidden right in Vancouver’s back yard: Vancouver Lake Park and Frenchman’s Bar Park.

After fueling up, we head over to the Vancouver Saturday Market. We check out the vendors, eat whatever samples are offered and usually give an impromptu disc dog demonstration in Esther Short Park. We love doing this and kids love watching Nick “the Wonder Dog” doing his Frisbee tricks. Nick is world class. Me not so much. Sorry for being the weak link on our team Nick. By this time, I’m hungry again. It’s off to Uptown for food and a treat! There are quite a few options for sweet treats,: yogurt, handmade ice cream and bakery! Having such an active day with Nick serves a couple of purposes. Keeps us in shape and tires Nick out. A tired dog is a happy dog and it’s Saturday night so I’m going out and I don’t feel guilty about leaving him behind! Most of the time, it seems like I have a non-profit event to attend but on the nights that are open, I like to meet friends at Beaches for dinner and great conversation.

Vancouver Lake is the perfect place to spend a warm Saturday afternoon. Parking is free! Bring sandwiches and have a picnic. Let the kids run around and burn off some of that unbelievable kid energy on a playground that certain local young experts describe as “totally awesome.” Enjoy the view of one of the biggest lakes in the region, surrounded by Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, and forest. Bring an inflatable rowboat and go exploring! Or go take a nice quiet nature hike through the forest. It’s an easy, well-kept trail. Frenchman’s Bar is a fantastic place for letting your offspring splash around and build sand castles. A trail leads to an abandoned barn, a must-explore for curious types, and a mustphotograph backdrop for camera bugs. Have a second picnic, or stretch out and watch the ships on the Columbia River. Take a bike ride, or head out with your kayak. Summer is in full swing! With school out, it doesn’t take a passport or a suitcase to find some of the best tucked-away spots to recharge for grown-ups and kids alike.

UPTOWN OFFERINGS ARE VAST By KIM HASH of The Children’s Center My daughter, Margaux, and I have been kindred spirits since the moment she was born. Twentyfive happy years later, a favorite mother/daughter outing is to check-out cool shopping and dining districts. We’ve loved Uptown Village since we moved to Vancouver in 1998. First stop is to cozy up to a steaming pot of tea, scones with Devonshire cream and tea sandwiches at the quaint tea house. Margaux, truly a woman of eras gone by, loves to frequent the antique, resale and vintage shops seeking that perfect 40’s style dress or Downton Abbey chapeau. When it’s time for a break, the international dining opportunities are très magnifique! There’s Middle Eastern, Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean, Irish, you name it. We can’t resist a good French bakery or creperie and Uptown Village boasts both! Tradition requires us to indulge at the incredible ice cream shop. No girls day out is complete without a stop to a spa for, well, anything! As we like to say, “Treat yourself!” Uptown Village boasts several wonderful spas and salons. Tired and laden with shopping bags, a stop in at the Tip Top for a Red Chair by Deschutes marks the perfect end to a perfect day! Cheers!

First ... of all

O

f all the newspapers our size, The Columbian hauled in more Society of Professional Journalists first-place awards than any other newspaper. We almost doubled the number of the next newspaper. When it came to total awards, we again came in first. And again we had twice as many as the next newspaper. We competed against some very good newspapers in a five-state region, which made it particularly rewarding to achieve these goals. We are both humbled and proud. Truth is, The Columbian consistently has done extremely well over the years when it

comes to awards. We don’t do what we do to win awards, but if we do what we do well, the awards will come. Our entire staff — who work hard 365 days a year — do what they do because they believe it matters. It matters to keep our community informed. It matters to engage our community in constructive dialogue. It matters that community begins here with The Columbian. If you see a Columbian staff member, please say congratulations. They’ve earned it again this year.

Southwest Washington’s Elite Car Show Event

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4TH 9:30AM-4PM ATTEND! $15/PERSON, KIDS 12 & UNDER ARE FREE

The 4th Annual Concours d’Elegance is not your ordinary car show. It’s a distinguished event showcasing the finest, original automotive art; a representation of the pinnacle of beauty and elegance. It’s history dates back to the 1700’s in Paris, when the elite would ride up and down the Champs Elysees showing off their elegant horse-drawn coaches, known as the “Parade of Elegance.” The tradition has continued and evolved into a display of automotive art. This year’s event will feature the cars of automotive legend: Carroll Shellby as well as Mirco mini cars and a period dress competition.
