A lot can change over 34 years. Just ask the people at TPD, formerly known as The Personnel Department. Their recent name change is a reflection of the many changes in the world of human resources since the company began in 1980. D

on’t expect elevator music or white lab coats at Robin’s Pharmacy. Found on the north end of Commercial Drive at Venables, owner and pharmacy manager Robin Manweiler takes a different approach – treating people like people, getting to know them and working together for better health.

“We are now providing flu vaccinations for people who want them,” Robin said. “It’s just another way we can help our customers stay healthy and they don’t have to travel for it. They get the advice, medicine and support they need right here in their local community.” Robin believes in making his customers’ days better when they visit.

Robin opened his pharmacy almost six years ago and has worked as a pharmacist for 18 years.

“We strive to be a positive part of the community – we use humour to connect with people,” he commented. “We take a personal approach to healthcare. It can be stressful and challenging to live in Vancouver with the high cost of living, the rainy weather, and the state of the economy. We take it upon ourselves to make people smile or laugh to lighten the load.”

“In order to improve the health of patients, trust is the key,” Robin said. “And when people feel you care, trust is the natural byproduct.”

It may be a different style of health care, but on Commercial Drive, it’s definitely appreciated. Robin knows there is more to health than just prescriptions.

“That’s how you go above and beyond,” noted Robin. “You have to want to make a difference for people. We work with patients who have simple healthcare needs as well as those who have highly complex health issues. We cater to both groups equally.”

“Today, many products are made from materials that didn’t exist 30 years ago,” Jonathan commented. When certain isotopes are directed at a material, their decay is observed and properties of these materials are revealed. This is beneficial in fields ranging from aerospace to automotive engineering. Despite the brainiac knowledge in every corner of TRIUMF, these physicists, engineers and scientists are fun, interesting and friendly. They want people to come and tour to see what they do. “It’s a centre of excellence and hub of innovation,” Jonathan said. “We’re training the next generation of leaders. Students from across the country come to TRIUMF. We offer public lectures and events and welcome connections so the community can see what we’re doing.”

T

he business of investment banking is not just about making the numbers work for clients, it’s also about developing relationships, said Gary Wu.

Wu, the Richmond branch manager at National Bank Financial, said that is paramount, especially since the majority of his clients are newcomers to Canada, an experience he shares with them.

“I am a landed immigrant myself,” said Wu, who packed up his young family — a wife and two children — and brought them to Canada in 1986 after he had established a successful banking career in Taiwan. “My family was very surprised, to say the least, when I told them about the move,” said Wu, adding he yearned for a change in focus. “I was the regional treasurer for Standard Bank in Taipei,” he said, explaining it involved foreign exchange trading and Treasury management. Wu found it was a very high-pressure and responsible position dealing with large sums of money, but it lacked a personal element. So, he decided to find a new challenge within the field of finance on another continent. And Wu found it here, in a country he had never even visited or had any business or family connections. Here, he provides worry free investment solutions, when managing portfolios, for investors who find Canada all new to them, both in terms of culture and business dealings. “I know all the challenges they are facing in a new country,” said Wu, who earned a Masters Degree in Business Economics at the University of California. “And the most important challenge is how they go about supporting themselves financially in their

new surroundings. And many are not familiar with the North American financial markets.” Much of that unfamiliarity deals with the highly regulated nature of markets here compared to those in Asia where there are frequent promises of high returns and guaranteed principal retention. Often, those too good to be true investments are not fulfilled. “I tell my clients here that in a free, competitive market, manage their wealth in accordance to their investment objectives and leverage the resources from National Bank Financial. He also advises them on the best approach within the Canadian tax environment, which is much more onerous than in Asia. “This business is all about trust,” he said. “And many of my clients become good friends. I get to know their families, their kids. So, when they come to make a decision on a major life event, many of them will come and ask for my opinion. And that’s a great compliment to our operation here.” An example of that trust is the status NBF’s portfolio manager possess for discretionary managed accounts. “Not many advisors have that qualification,” Wu said, “to independently manage an account according to a certain criteria. “It reinforces the fact that this is very much a people business.”

W

hen unique shopping is combined with historical beauty, it becomes a “must visit” destination. The Post Office Building is the oldest of the four, completed in 1910, and is best known for the clock tower with the largest clock movement in Western Canada. On the western-most corner is the Winch Building completed in 1911 which was sold to the federal government in 1925. Rounding out the foursome is the Customs Examining Warehouse which was completed in 1913, and like the Post Office Building, was designed by Public Works Chief Architect, David Ewart.

Shannon Oaks

R

esidents of the beautiful Shannon Oaks retirement community are the biggest cheerleaders of the residence. They are the first to tell you this is their home - one without the complexities of maintenance, cooking or other chores. Olive Fera and Perry Couttie are close friends and active residents at Shannon Oaks and can’t imagine living anywhere else. “I’ve never felt so comfortable,” Olive said. “I’m not worried or scared of anything. I wake up in the morning and the day is mine to do what I want, when I want, if I want.” B.C.-based Baptist Housing owns and operates 16 seniors’ residences throughout the province. It began 50 years ago on the same property where Shannon Oaks now sits and continues the organization’s dedication to active healthy seniors. Shannon Oaks is an all-inclusive independent living residence and like all Baptist Housing locations, is non-profit. “The inclusive aspect attracted me,” Perry said. “Because a lot of places offer things, then charge for them. I came in the door here and it was just like the sign over the fireplace says ‘welcome home’.” “It does make a difference when it’s faithbased,” Olive noted. “Residents come first. Not all of us [residents] are Christian, but it’s still an incredibly caring atmosphere where all are treated with compassion.” The all-inclusive aspect of Shannon Oaks means day-to-day tasks like meals, housekeeping, linens, activities and even 24-hour emergency response is included in the monthly rental fee. The suites, lounges, activity areas and gardens are spacious and inviting, welcoming whatever hobby a resident might like to engage in.

“A lot of residents don’t have family locally,” said Olive, “But we become family. We became friends [Olive points at Perry] when there was an empty space at the dinner table. We were having so much fun, we just hit it off right away.” “I went to Olive’s table and from then on it was absolute nonsense,” Perry said with the giggle of a teenager. The team at Shannon Oaks is dedicated to keeping seniors active, engaged and participating in their community as much as they are willing or able. They meet weekly to ensure residents keep coming first. Olive took on her roll of librarian after her husband passed away. She asked Sharon Ginter, the Activity Coordinator, for something to do and in no time found herself helping others find reading materials as well as keeping them organized. “My daughter phoned me twice this morning,” Perry said. “I wasn’t in my suite, I was too busy! Shannon Oaks is a lifestyle that has been created for us to do what we like with support.” For many seniors, isolation is a far more painful condition than many diseases. Life at Shannon Oaks eliminates the concern of isolation while still providing opportunities for solitude.

ids are not adults. Obviously. It bears reminding however when considering dental needs.

Children have both unique physical and emotional considerations. A child’s mouth is smaller and constantly undergoing change, yet socially they are more present and as a result, deal with clinical experiences differently. Some children may be fine with dental visits while others find any treatment stressful and anxiety provoking. Pediatric dentist, Dr. Anita Gartner of Tot 2 Teen Dental not only gives children expert oral care, but also advocates for them allowing for a customized, emotionally sensitive dental experience. “I really love what I do,” Dr Gartner said. “There is nothing as great as having a parent say they trust you to work with their child.” A dentist for more than twenty years, Dr. Gartner focused on pediatrics for the last seventeen years. “I’m good with kids,” she noted. “I’m able to connect with them. In addition to occupational training, students in the eight week program receive meals, Food Safe Certification and employment counselling as support to successfully transition into the local workforce. To date over 700 students have graduated from the program, with nearly a third successfully finding employment.

J

ust float. That’s the message from Andy and Mike Zaremba, brothers who saw the benefits of float tanks also known as sensory deprivation tanks. That’s why they created Float House and are witnessing the positive benefits clients are having. The popularity of floating has caused the expansion of Float House to nine tanks in Gastown (the largest float operation in the world) as well as a Kitsilano location and a Victoria franchise. It’s an interesting concept: crawl into a tank filled with 10” of water and 900 pounds of Epsom salts heated to about 93.5° F (the same temperature as your skin), close the lid and float on the salt water in complete darkness and soundlessness for 90 minutes. “In our society we are regularly overstimulated,” Mike said. “There are stressors constantly bombarding us. In the tank, you eliminate all physical sensory input and can reset.” The brothers explained that the tank is ideal for those under stress or mental strain, those in need of physical recovery after extensive exercise or injury, people dealing with chronic pain from arthritis or surgery and those who are looking for a deep meditative or creative boost. “You aren’t distracted in the tank, your body has no pressure points,” Andy noted. “So you’re in complete awareness of your mind and thoughts. It can lead to more time in the Theta brainwave state.” Theta state occurs just before falling asleep and is also achieved and prolonged in states of deep meditation by experienced meditators. Being in the tank allows you to enter into theta and maintain that state longer even for non-meditators.

Then, because you’ve experienced a natural cycle, you wake up feeling well rested, energized and not groggy. W

hile insurance is about risk and assets, nothing says it has to be cold and impersonal. In fact, it can be anything but, like with life-long Vancouver resident Sal Audia, President of GNK Insurance in Kitsilano. GNK Insurance has been at the corner of Broadway and Blenheim for more than 50 years. “It was a small office with a secretary and three partners: Mr. Gerwing, the founder, partner Don North, then Don Kerr joined,” Sal noted. “It was known as Gerwing, North, & Kerr. Mr. Gerwing hired me 25 years ago.” Sal learned insurance through a job with family, but wanted to make his own way so approached Gerwing and was hired. When the partners stepped down, Sal bought the business and rebranded it GNK Insurance. “The GNK logo stood for the original partners’ names, but because I have great respect for them, in our rebranding, the initials now also stand for our mission: Doing business in Good faith, Neighbourhood service and Knowledge,” said Sal. GNK has grown to 30 people and three offices offering Autoplan, home, travel, business and commercial insurance but they also provide special event coverage. “We focus on commercial business,” Sal noted. “We are very experienced in landlord risks like apartments and commercial buildings.” Commercial also includes offices, restaurants, contractors, manufacturers and specialty commercial businesses. “We match the customer with the best coverages and competitive pricing,” said Sal. “We are a broker in the truest sense as we represent a number of insurers.”

Another major area of specializing for GNK is claim services. Other brokers will say the same, but few have the commitment Sal does, which he passed on to his team. “I wore a pager back when insurance brokers didn’t offer after-hours service,” Sal noted. “I grew my business on that type service. Some of my best customers today are from a call in the middle of the night back then.” Sal is also a claim crusader. When he feels a claim isn’t being treated fairly by an insurer, he goes to bat to attempt to get it right. This over-the-top customer care stems from the way Sal feels people should treat one another and differentiates GNK. Sal and the team ensure customers know they are cared about – and it creates repeat business. The team at GNK embraces Sal’s philosophies. A number have been with Sal for 10 and 20 years. “We also do a lot of things to keep it fun. It’s a serious business, so fun is essential,” said Sal. Another thing the team does together is supporting the community. From Sal’s dedicated involvement in the Italian community to neighbourhood programs, school fairs, golf tournaments and community events. One of Sal’s fondest memories was GNK’s 50th anniversary at the annual Christmas party.
