MONUMENTS

Onwards and Upwards!

The debate over the location of the Smolensk disaster monument in Warsaw has intensified. Senate Speaker Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska believes the monument disrupts the architectural harmony of Piłsudski Square and suggests relocating it to a green area. She urged city authorities to prioritize aesthetics when determining its location, warning that other monuments could be affected by the planned reconstruction of the Saski Palace. Minister of Culture Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz echoed these concerns, noting that the monument's current placement might hinder future development plans for the square. The discussion reflects the broader challenge of balancing memorialization with urban aesthetics.

Warsaw Among Top European Cities for Walking

A study by Compare The Market Australia ranked Warsaw as one of the world's most pedestrian-friendly cities. The Polish capital holds the third spot among European metropolises, trailing only Munich and Milan. This ranking highlights Warsaw's dedication to creating safe, accessible pedestrian spaces and promoting urban planning that encourages walking and cycling.

Warsaw Goes Green

Warsaw is undergoing a green transformation, with city officials removing over 31,000 square meters of concrete last year to make way for vegetation.

The most remarkable development so far is the renovation of the artificial lake in Pole Mokotowskie (above), which makes it an ideal location for practicing with your drone to capture dynamic Instagram shots of the park and the city skyline in the background. Other key areas where concrete was replaced with vegetation include Bankowy Square, Integrator Square in Bielany, and Jacek Kaczmarski Square. The greenery replaced impervious surfaces in city yards, parks, streets, and backyards, creating more inviting public spaces.

For 2024, Wilsona Square and ul. Saska will soon see new trees and flowers. Residents' voices play a crucial role in driving this green initiative, with last year's participatory budget dedicating PLN 50 million to greenery projects. The upcoming budget vote, running from June 15 to 30, will determine the next steps in Warsaw's green journey.

Navigating crowds and embracing urban cycling

In the first week following its grand opening, Warsaw's new pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Wisła River attracted approximately 200,000 visitors. The bridge quickly became a popular destination, with residents and tourists flocking to experience the new crossing. However, with the influx of pedestrians and cyclists, online discussions have raised concerns about their coexistence on the 452-meter stretch. While some claim cyclists are too aggressive, others believe pedestrians are inattentive, causing friction between the two groups. This article explores the current state of cycling in Warsaw, offers tips for safer urban biking, and delves into the challenges and opportunities for the city's cycling infrastructure.

THE APPEAL OF CYCLING IN WARSAW

Cycling in Warsaw has gained traction for several reasons. Bikes don't get stuck in traffic jams, require minimal parking space, and don't need fuel. Commuting by bike saves time, money, and contributes to a healthier lifestyle by providing daily exercise. Moreover, it's an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, significantly reducing noise and greenhouse gas emissions.

For those who don't own a bike, Veturilo, Warsaw's public bike system, offers a convenient solution. With over 320 stations across the city,

warsawinsider.pl 9
PHOTOGRAPH SHUTTERSTOCK

Cycling Warsaw

riders can rent traditional city bikes, electric bikes, or even tandems. The first 20 minutes are free, providing an opportunity for newcomers to explore the city without commitment.

CYCLING TO WORK: A GROWING TREND

As more people choose bicycles for their daily commute, employers are adapting to the trend by offering bicycle-friendly facilities in office buildings. Companies are incorporating changing rooms, showers, and secure bike parking to encourage cycling among employees. Initiatives like the odkryj rower na nowo (rediscover the bicycle) campaign promote best practices for cycling infrastructure in office settings, with video content to inspire more organizations to follow suit.

WARSAW'S CYCLING LANDSCAPE: CURRENT STATE AND CHALLENGES

Warsaw's cycling infrastructure has seen significant growth, with the city's Municipal Roads Authority measuring bicycle traffic since 2014. In 2023, cameras were installed at 53 locations, recording both bicycle and scooter traffic. The results indicate a notable increase in cycling activity, with 31,418 cyclists crossing the Vistula River daily—a 15% increase from the

previous year.

Despite this progress, the cycling network still faces challenges. A coherent system of bicycle paths is lacking, with many lanes ending abruptly or leading to inaccessible areas. Poor quality lanes, discontinuity, and obstacles like high curbs and stairs are common issues. Additionally, traffic management often overlooks cyclists, leading to confusing or unsafe situations at intersections and roundabouts.

BUILDING A BETTER CYCLING FUTURE

To address these challenges, Warsaw must focus on creating a coherent network of bicycle paths and improving existing infrastructure. This involves addressing barriers created by main roads, coordinating road projects with cycling needs, and engaging local authorities in meaningful discussions about bicycle infrastructure development.

By investing in a cyclist-friendly city, Warsaw can continue to grow its cycling culture, encouraging more residents to choose bikes for commuting and leisure. The city's commitment to building over 30 km of new infrastructure in the coming years is a promising step toward a more connected and cyclist-friendly Warsaw.

Tokyo Bikes in Warsaw: exploring the city at a different pace

Ewelina Dziewiela, the voice behind Tokyo Bikes in Warsaw, is leading a lifestyle revolution on two wheels. With an approach that celebrates slowing down, connecting with the city, and personalizing the cycling experience, she's helping Warsaw's residents find joy in every ride.

INSIDER: How does the tokyobike philosophy align with the lifestyle and culture of Warsaw?

Ewelina Dziewiela: The tokyobike philosophy is universal and fits well with any urban lifestyle, including Warsaw's. We're casual cyclists who value city life, exploring new places, and being curious about the latest happenings. Our philosophy encourages slowing down and appreciating simple things, like a blooming tree, a unique piece of architecture, or a favorite coffee spot. With a bicycle, it's easier to explore and find joy in the city.

What makes Warsaw an ideal fit for tokyobike? Warsaw has many green areas, a growing

network of bike lanes, and relatively flat terrain, making it perfect for everyday cycling. The city's culture also aligns with the tokyobike brand's focus on quality and aesthetics. I saw great potential in Warsaw's bike-friendly attitude and interest in beautifully designed, functional objects. With a little more effort, I believe Warsaw could become a cycling city like Copenhagen.

Which tokyobike models are most popular with Warsaw cyclists?

Our customers prefer comfortable everyday bikes. The Bisou model, with a step-through frame and 7 speeds, is a popular choice, as is the CS26 model, with a classic frame and 8 speeds. Although there's a trend toward road/gravel bikes in Warsaw, our customers generally choose comfort. They also enjoy customizing their bikes, giving each one a unique personality.

Do you have any special events or community initiatives coming up?

Absolutely! In April, we hosted a contest with a ticket to Kino Muranów to watch "Perfect Days" by Wim Wenders and a bicycle ride through Warsaw. It was a fantastic experience, with coffee, donuts, and cycling. We want to continue this tradition and bring the "morning ride" to Warsaw, inspired by similar rides in Fukuoka and Hiroshima.

Could you share an anecdote from a customer who embraced the tokyobike lifestyle?

A customer who used to ride her gravel bike at high speeds told us that after getting a tokyobike Bisou, she started to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. She even stopped to appreciate the fragrance of lilacs. It's amazing to see how the tokyobike lifestyle can change someone's perspective on cycling.

Embassy Bikes: custom rides, warm vibes

Meet Katarzyna Hancke, a key figure at Embassy Bikes. Discover how her passion for customization, customer connections, and community initiatives fuels the vibrant biking culture in Warsaw.

INSIDER: Working in a bike shop must lead to some interesting encounters. Can you share a memorable interaction with a customer that stands out to you?

Katarzyna Hancke: At Embassy Bikes, we cater to a lot of customers who have been dreaming of owning one of our premium bikes for years. It's always heartwarming to see the joy on their faces when they finally get their dream bike. One especially memorable moment was when a customer's partner proposed to her with one of our bikes as part of the surprise. She said yes, and the smile on her face was unforgettable.

If you could take any bike from the shop for a ride right now, which one would it be and where would you go?

I would grab one of our E-bike Cruisers and head down to the Vistula River. There's a great spot near Powsin that's perfect for a picnic. Riding an e-bike lets you cover a lot of ground without getting too tired, so you can really enjoy the journey and explore without worrying about the distance.

Biking culture is growing in Warsaw. What do you think sets Embassy Bikes apart and keeps customers coming back?

What sets Embassy Bikes apart is our focus on customization and style. Our bikes are colorful, fun, and elegant, and customers can personalize their bikes to reflect their personality. People today want to stand out, and we give them the opportunity to create something unique that truly feels like theirs. By allowing customers to choose colors and customize parts, we help them express themselves and enjoy a bike that’s one of a kind.

Do you have any funny or quirky stories from your time working at Embassy Bikes that you can share with us?

I'll need to think about this one and get back to you later with a good story. Stay tuned!

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting to explore biking as a hobby or means of transportation in Warsaw?

My advice is to get lost a little and explore the city from a different angle. Don't stick to the same routes all the time; try going a roundabout way and discover new roads and hidden spots. Take your time, enjoy the ride, and don't forget to breathe in the fresh air.

Interview CAPTURING WARSAW'S ESSENCE

In an exclusive interview with Małgorzata Gągór (IG: goshika2019), Warsaw-based photographer delves into the intricacies of his distinctive style, revealing the spontaneous approach behind his captivating images that effortlessly blend luxury with everyday moments.

“ I constantly seek inspiration through long walks around the city

INSIDER: I would describe your photography as having a distinctive sense of style. Can you explain why I might think that? It’s a huge compliment, thank you. It could be my editing style, the way I frame certain scenes, or a combination of both, but each viewer brings their own perspective to a photo. For me, each photo I take is significant; each one tells a story from my perspective. I strive for my photos to evoke a certain association and emotion to the place.

Your photography exudes a sense of luxury, like something you'd find in a high-end travel magazine. What inspires you? Inspiration is everywhere for me. Whether it's the architecture, nature, people, or the time of day, I find beauty in all aspects of Warsaw. Rainy autumn days are as captivating to me as sunny spring ones. Sometimes it's the play of sunlight, other times it's the city lights at night. I constantly seek inspiration through long walks around the city.

“ Photography is my passion; it helps me unwind, clear my mind, and relax...

Can you describe your relationship with Warsaw?

I've been living and working here with my family for nearly 20 years. Initially, the city felt crowded and noisy, but over time, I've developed a deep affection for Warsaw.

I appreciate how you capture people in your shots. Can you explain your process and how you choose locations to shoot?

I rarely plan specific locations for shooting; it's mostly spontaneous. I discreetly photograph people, aiming to capture fleeting moments that resonate with me. I select shots that, in my opinion, best convey the atmosphere of that moment.

Do you have a favorite area of Warsaw that you're drawn to for photography?

I don't have a favorite. I frequent certain areas for their convenience, like Powiśle, but I believe every district of Warsaw offers unique photographic opportunities.

Do you have any guiding principles as a photographer?

I always strive to approach each photo in my own unique way.

What insights have you gained about your subjects and yourself through photography?

Photography is my passion; it helps me unwind, clear my mind, and relax. It's taught me to view the world through a different lens, noticing details I might have otherwise missed. I've come to realize there's no such thing as bad weather for a photo walk. Photography has introduced me to lesser-known parts of Warsaw, intriguing locations, and many fellow enthusiasts who share my love for the craft. I spend all my spare time either out with my camera, editing photos, or brainstorming new ideas.

AHHH, AHAAN...

Serving up spicy heat in a new location that will have you sharing with all your friends.

warsawinsider.pl 21

Review

Formerly located in a historic toll gate dating back to 1818 on Plac Unii Lubelskiej, Ahaan gained a dedicated following by serving authentic Thai cuisine using genuine Thai ingredients while making all their sauces from scratch. Their obsession with authenticity first caught our attention when we learned that the owners imported holy basil themselves from Thailand to secure each dish's validity. It is the heat and spice that we are true fans of at Ahaan with each bite like wallop delivered by a seasoned Thai kickboxer.

INTERIOR

You could say their original location was like a prelude selling tickets to the main event, being their new spot in Saska Kępa. Complete with a full bar, with some small high tables adjacent it is the larger tables by the window that are our choice since being perfect for people watching. The upstairs area has tables overlooking the open kitchen where you can observe where the magic happens as waitstaff enter and leave like birds to a backyard feeder. Their dedication to authenticity remains unchanged, and to be honest, it’s unmatched in Warsaw. However, their concept has evolved at the new location. Settling into Saska Kępa, the restaurant has embraced a more community-oriented style with smaller plates designed for sharing. This shift is great because it encourages you to try a variety of their delicious dishes, sparking excitement and conversation as everyone at the table discusses what they are eating.

WHAT WE ATE

A staple favorite when visiting Ahaan has always been their Pad Kra Pao. It's made with ground beef supplied by their reliable butcher, Yes, Butcher, combined with garlic, chili, holy basil, and topped with a fried egg. The gritty combination of the meat and the soft egg, along with a punch of Thai spice, makes this a must-have dish.

Among the two meat dishes we ordered, the ribs and braised beef cheek, there were mixed opinions on which was better. The ribs were beautifully prepared, sliced, and arranged on a beer-braised rib shank like fallen dominoes. The beef cheek, submerged in a rich brown curry sauce made with three different types of peppers and makrut lime leaves, was perfect for adding to rice, balancing out the heat with some starch. All this heat and meat pairs perfectly with Som Tam, a classic green papaya salad made with fish sauce, garlic, and chili. Its slight acidity helps to soften and accentuate the strong flavors crafted by chef Konrad Markowski and his talented team.

You'll be especially happy to hear from us about Ahaan’s calamari—it’s unlike anything you've ever tasted. Crispy and fried in tempura, the calamari is glazed with a sticky oyster sauce, caramelized with green pepper and garlic. Be sure to keep this plate close when the dishes come out, and remember to be kind and not fight over the last ring on the plate.

Overall, Ahaan's new location at Saska Kępa is a delightful upgrade, combining authentic Thai flavors with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Whether you are a long-time fan or new to Ahaan, this is a spot you’ll want to revisit again and again.

The Art of Cooking

We sit down with Chef Artur Łazarewicz of The Farm to talk about passion, creativity, and freshness in the kitchen...

INSIDER: What encouraged you to become a chef?

My passion for cooking has been with me since my earliest years, making the choice of profession simple and obvious. Watching my mother and grandmother in the kitchen had a huge impact on who I am today. My journey started with a four-year culinary school, followed by internships at a hotel and my first job in my hometown of Włocławek.

They say you first eat with your eyes. Your plates are almost like works of art. What inspires you?

I draw inspiration from nature and seasonality, and I work in my own style, which I then showcase on the plates at the restaurant. Culinary journeys are also very inspiring, helping me as a chef to discover new products and flavors.

How do you feel in the kitchen?

The kitchen is my second home; I feel fantastic here, surrounded by a wonderful team of chefs I've built, as well as excellent waitstaff. Good atmosphere and professionalism are essential in this profession. One team, one dream.

How do you translate what you love to cook into the menu at The Farm?

It all starts with an idea in my head, then I look for unique flavor combinations. When creating the menu, I ensure it has variety. I love cooking vegetables that perfectly complement our meat from Masurian Farm.

Chef's Choice

Some tough culinary questions we threw at the Chef to get to know him a little better...

Would you rather give up eating Pork or cooking with Butter?

Difficult question! I would probably give up pork...

What is your approach to menu development and creating new dishes?

Seasonality is foremost, but I also maintain close contact with suppliers. The best dish ideas come to me when I'm at home planning for the next day; that's when I come up with the best concepts, which later appear on our menu.

Is there a dish on the menu that you are particularly proud of?

One of my favorite dishes, which I am most proud of, is the Potato Rosti with 48-hour slow-cooked pastrami, wild garlic, and sweetspicy pickle. It's a dish, actually a snack, that every guest must start with at The Farm. The crispiness of the Rosti, the meltingly tender glazed pastrami, and the sweetness of the pickle bring a harmony of flavors—exactly what I expect from my kitchen.

Can you share your philosophy on using fresh, seasonal ingredients in your cooking? When it comes to using fresh ingredients, I cook according to the seasonality calendar because that's when I know the products are at their peak of flavor, making the dishes fresher, tastier, and healthier. I work with local suppliers who provide the best products imaginable, making the dishes at The Farm surprising and captivating our guests.

Creme Brulee or Tiramisu Both!

Would you rather give up something you love to eat or never try something new again?

Giving up something I like. Learning something new is always discovering the world!

If you had to give up pasta or bread, which would it be?

I would give up pasta. I love bread!

Which do you prefer Tuna Steak or Sirlion?

Sirlioin. I'm not a huge fan of tuna, so the choice here is quite simple.

Which can you live without Beer or wine? You can live without both, but... it would be a pity!

Grilling isn't just for special occasions. Think pizza, whole chicken, paella, even cakes and waffles! Weber's interchangeable accessories transform your grill into a versatile cooking powerhouse.

The Buzz

Presenting the city’s most talked about venues, join us on a whistle stop tour of the cafes, pubs and cocktail dens and wine bars that you can’t afford to miss…

The Farm

Mokotowska 8

The Farm in Warsaw is celebrated for its innovative menu and vibrant atmosphere. Chef Artur Łazarewicz, with a background in renowned restaurants, brings a bold approach to cooking, blending fresh ingredients with unexpected flavors. The restaurant's artistic vibe complements its imaginative dishes, creating a unique culinary experience that attracts food enthusiasts and adventurous diners alike.

WINE & DINE

Kontakt

Sandomierska 13

Weaknesses do not exist in Kontakt, and if they do, they have yet to be formally identified by any who visit. Looking glorious in its deep shades of blue, its look is complemented by a 400-strong wine list slanted towards natural, bio-dynamic and organic wines. The five-star experience is aided by wonderful food.

LOCAL WINES

Brać

Zgoda 3 & Sierakowskiego 4A

Resistant as traditionalists may be to the very notion of Polish wine, Brać have made it their mission to showcase its unknown quality. Presenting on-edge sips from niche domestic producers (including collabs with the Funky Fluid craft brewery!), all this is done in a stylish space that feels good to be in. From 2023, this was our favourite wine-related find!

NATURAL WINE

Rascal

Moliera 6

Formerly a canteen for ballet dancers, this address now holds the largest bar in Europe specialising in natural wines – you weren’t expecting that! Entered past a lavish drape, this cool space has a suitably adventurous choice of rebel wines.

BEER GEEKS

Jabeerwocky

Nowogrodzka 12

Good old Jabbers will never let you down. A Warsaw institution, the adventurous choice of beers gives nods to international pioneers, domestic talents as well as

their own house beers. Prewar floors and the welcome smell of spillage give it a great atmosphere that becomes a boisterous babble of international voices the later it gets. For something quieter, take your pint next door to their sister bar, Jabeerwocky Junior.

THE HEART OF POLSKI CRAFT

Kufle i Kapsle

Nowogrodzka 25

Respectful of the building’s pre-war heritage, the brick interiors are thick with noise, clamour and the reassuring smells of last year’s party. On colder nights, make your way to the back to discover an intimate space sprinkled with vintage armchairs and wonky old lamps set at a natural tilt. The beers are among the most radical in Warsaw.

CUTTING EDGE CRAFT

Hopito Chmielna

Chmielna 24

Opened last year as the younger sister of Hopito’s Żurawia venture, this branch feels a little more mature in its target audience, though every bit as fun in its beer selection - radicalized drinkers will love Hopito’s own crazy brews.

OLD TOWN PINTS

Same Krafty & Same Krafty Vis-à-vis

Nowomiejska 10

Jammed between the Barbican gateway and the Rynek, Same Krafty’s pair of Old Town drinkeries face opposite each other to offer their own mini-pub crawl. Appearing as raucous and rugged tavern-like bars, the experimental craft beers are a league ahead of the mainstream fizz peddled by

the other nearby bars.

FRIDAY HIT

Grace Drink Bar

Krucza 16/22

Named in honour of Grace Jones, the choice of hero says much about a place that devotes itself to celebrating the glam excess of 80s New York. Rooms include one that’s all bordello style colours and velvety finishes, and another that’s high on plush purple, glass and mirrors. Fuelling the party, are classic cocktails, kamikaze shots and kitschy yesteryear hits.

CREATIVE COCKTAILS

Ave Pegaz

Piłsudskiego 9

Inside a lively interior that doesn’t take itself too seriously (check the ‘ceiling garden’), swivel about to gawk at a mighty collection of corkscrews and drinking implements. In this alchemist’s workshop find yourself enjoying some of the most creative cocktails in Warsaw.

COCKTAIL PORN

VHS

Poznańska 7

The shoebox sized VHS pays tribute to the 80s and 90s and is a model for good times –boasting a flamingo and pictures of Mr T., the toilet says it all. The drinks are among the wackiest in Warsaw, and they’re as fun to drink as they are to photograph.

RETRO HIP

Paloma Inn

Poznańska 21

Inspired by The Jetsons, the moon landings and the atom, Paloma Inn is a groovy blast of lunar lines, pea green colour tones and furnishings and fittings that are retro-fu-

turistic. The experience is compounded by easy listening muzak, 70s menu faves like fondue and mega fun cocktails.

THE ATMOSPHERE

Beirut & Kraken

Poznańska 12

Somewhere, amid all the junk relating to the Lebanese conflict (sandbags, ammo boxes…), you’ll find the spirit of Poznańska contained within this long, skinny bar. As fashionable now as it was when it opened, finish the evening in their connecting venture, the Pirates of the Caribbean-style Kraken. Evenings dissolve into a wild, happy whirl of international voices.

INSIDER CLASSIC

Pardon To Tu

Al. Armii Ludowej 14

Despite the upgrade in surrounds, they’ve retained the leftfield spirit of their old haunt thanks to flexi hours, a commitment to obscure sounds, and a well-spaced interior that references their former venue through its decadent colour scheme and wall of favoured musicians. The air of friendly, unforced cool is unmatched!

FOR THE MUSIC

Młodsza Siostra

Dobra 14/16

Known for his ear for upcoming talent, the owner Michał isn’t averse to taking risks in order to broaden Warsaw’s musical palate. The scrappy backdrop of bike repair garages give a vibe redolent of the shadowy courtyards of Berlin and Budapest, whilst inside it’s all creaking floorboards, mismatched furnishings and a clientele sourced from the local Academy of Fine Arts.

34 Warsaw Insider | May 2024

REBEL SOUNDS

Chmury / Hydrozagadka 11 Listopada 22

Set in a fleapit courtyard, it’s hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, but both are spiritually cojoined by a devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING

Foton

Wilcza 9A

You know it’s been an epic weekend when you wake up on Monday knowing that Foton was involved. Conversation with strangers is natural after a few of Foton’s cocktails, and these are enjoyed to a cool backdrop made up of fleet of tumbling plants perched on steel-framed irrigational contraptions.

CULT BAR

Gemba Chmielna 21

Adopting a loose-fitting PRL style, interiors include wood-paneled walls decorated with pics of Pope JPII, sporting pennants and framed artworks from the heyday of the Polish School of Poster. Tricked out with retro wallpaper, the perches by the bar are the most sought, but spillover seating can also be found in a winter garden enclosed by green and scarlet drapes – very David Lynch. Drinks include a broad-minded selection of craft beers, house cocktails and shots.

PRE-CLUB DRINKS

Bar Pacyfik

Hoża 61

Based upon the kind of Tijuana dive bar you’d have

happened upon during the Miami Vice era, Pacyfik is all candy floss pink and shades of teal: a raw-looking den that looks purposefully imperfect. Keeping the hip international crowd on the wrong side of drunk are kick-ass cocktails!

LATE NIGHTER

Republica San Escobar Poznańska 7

Lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.

ESSENTIAL CHECK-IN

Fabryka Norblina

Żelazna 51/53

Without fail, the big winner of 2023 was Norblin – hell, we even saw Kieran Culkin walking through over summer! In terms of nightlife, winners include the elite MOXO and the craft-minded Uwaga. Packed in the evening, the atmosphere is squared out perfectly by the live music that frequently escapes from the Piano Bar. The Insider fave though remains Piano Bar, a place with fancy cocktails, a 12-foot chandelier and a crowd that errs from late 20s upwards.

STUDENT CARNAGE

Nowy Świat ‘Pavilions’

Nowy Świat 26

For the highest condensation of bars in the capital head to ‘the pavilions’, a collection of ramshackle drinking cabins, shot bars and sheesha lairs inside a tight grid of shadowy back alleys. Adding to the gentle sense of confusion comes the realization that so many bars look the same –accessed through clattery, barred doors, visitors walk into murk and chaos.

LIVE SPORTS

Shamrock Sports Bar

Krucza 51

At long last, Warsaw has the sports bar it deserves. Zapping in football, rugby and suchlike from around the world (but mainly Britain), this Irish-run spot is an offshoot of the atmospheric Shamrock Irish Pub on Zgoda. Though a lot smarter than its sister, the raucous sense of fun has carried over –as has the quality Guinness.

ALT. ENTERTAINMENT

Worek Kości

Bagatela 10

There is nothing ordinary about Worek Kości and that’s underlined by its collection of 400 replica skulls. Known for its burlesque nights, this passionate celebration of the beautiful and bizarre also has a busy roster of lectures dedicated to criminal profiling, forensics and serial killers. Oh, and the cocktails are good.

THE PRAGA VIBE

W Oparach W Absurdu

Ząbkowska 6

Craft beers lurk within the fridge, but for the seminal Absurdu experience order a tray of vodka before bulldozing through the crowds that gather to listen to Balkan rock and Afro-Latin bands. Somewhere, hidden deep beneath the creaking antiques and moth-eaten Persian rugs, you might be lucky to find a woodcarved bar.

NORTHERN NIGHTS

Havana

Słowackiego 16/18

Set on the first floor of a PRL era tower, the super cool interior offers up a coherent display of retro posters, luscious plants and light wood trimmings that are respectful of this space’s former life as a 1960s cafe. Perched among hip freelancers and theatre types learning their lines, sip away on trendy bio wines, adventurous lemonades, craft swigs or specialty coffee sourced from local roasters.

CLUB OF THE YEAR

K-Bar Powiśle

Leona Kruczkowskiego

Providing an alternative to the usual Smolna / Luzztro / Jasna 1 scene, the location inside one of the pillars that prop up

Poniatowskiego Bridge lends an ‘in the know’ frisson of adventure to your evening. Small, sweaty, raw and intimate, the industrial-style vibe is offset against oriental lanterns and the occasional Korean flag. Music-wise, and evenings promise everything from Italo-rave to techno trance.

UPMARKET CLUBBING

Sen

Wioślarska 6

Some would say that Sen enjoys its heyday in the summer when the rooftop terrace opens to afford views of the illuminated bridges that span the river. But even outside these months it’s long enjoyed a reputation as Warsaw’s premier super-lux club. High class cocktails and a stringent door policy have helped maintain their name as the principal destination for glam, catwalk excess.

SHOW TIME!

Chaton Foksal 19

Chaton is where the celebs and top-earners gather to enjoy world class stage performers prance about whilst revelling in the bosom of refined luxury.

DESTINATION COFFEE

Café Pląs

Puławska 113A (Królikarnia)

Set inside the Króliarnia palace, it’s laidback and artsy-cool, something aided by the strategically placed plants, chillout beats and rare-find art books placed reverentially on the shelves. Specialty coffee, bio wines, alternative soft drinks and craft beer make it a highly versatile place to finish in after a brisk autumn walk around the palace grounds.

When only the best will do, we’ve cut through the chaff to present a curated choice of Warsaw’s top eateries –from ethnic comfort foods and under-the-radar gems all the way up to the city’s most exclusive dining rooms… POLISH

ul. Radna 13, restauracjaoma.com, tel. 574 601 21

Oma in Warsaw's Powiśle district offers a warm, homey atmosphere reminiscent of a visit to babcia's house. The restaurant combines vintage Polish decor with a modern twist, reflected in its creative takes on classic dishes like schabowy with Parmesan and garlic-infused zupa pomidorowa. Make a reservation—this hidden gem is always buzzing.

THE MICHELIN STAR

Pl. Trzech Krzyży 10/14

Andrea Camastra’s restaurant is a magical enclave in which time stands still. Mixing his famed scientific techniques with artisanal processes, his tasting menu is expressive in its aesthetics and flavour, as if it were an extension of his own firecracker character. Even the cheeseboard is a mind-bender – on our April visit, jaws hit the floor as this arrived in the liquified form of a pear consommé topped with warm gorgonzola foam. A bold, world-class adventure, no other restaurant offers such a ride – a second Michelin star seems guaranteed.

FORMAL & EXTRAORDINARY

Ossolińskich 3

Nineteenth century cornices and baroque drapes lend an enveloping sense of luxury to this A-Class space. Epoka’s menu is based on Polish cookbooks from different epochs, with the dishes reconstructed in a way that’s innovative, unexpected and a roller coaster of thrills. La Liste officially rank it among the world’s Top 100 Restaurants.

EXQUISITE

Wilcza 46

Winning our 2022 award last year for ‘Outstanding Achievement’, chef Jacek Grochowina’s enclave of class looks dashing with its monochrome colours and muted gunmetal shades, but it’s the food that has made it the place Warsaw heads to live the life of the 1%. Treasuring detail and finesse, Nolita demonstrates fine dining hasn’t died.

Regularly adjusted to utilize the best items the season has to offer, the menu is a triumph of expertly balanced tastes and is admired for some of the most interesting cooking in the city – think elegant with a localized twist. With no reservations accepted, Bibenda’s enduring popularity ensures that queues often build at the entrance – even at the height of the Polish winter. Augmenting the warm interiors of raw red brick and dim yellow lighting, guests flock for a menu that celebrates the fields, forests and farmsteads of Poland. Though not strictly vegetarian, meat is a rare find with the focus now shifted on eclectic combinations of freshly plucked goodies – e.g. crispy mushrooms and scallions with fermented garlic chili

From the creators of Peaches comes this brill brunch spot. Design-wise, the pair’s taste for cool is unmissable and surmised by a wall of glazed ceramic tiles from Holland’s GBD.studio. Initially completed in 1904 to serve as Warsaw’s primary source of electricity, Elektrownia’s blended approach includes an exclusive top floor beauty hall filled with cutting edge beauty solutions and a retail offer than tends to shirk the mainstream to instead slant in on contemporary Polish design, upscale vintage, niche brands and established local talent. The food and drink has also been a major plus, with most attention going to a food hall that appears in an energetic sea of neon.

CENTRUM PRASKIE KONESER

Reopened in 2018 as a mixed-use project containing cultural sites, F&B outlets, A Class offices and loft-style apartments, no other investment has had a bigger impact on Praga’s overdue regeneration than Koneser. Culturally, it’s also done much thanks to the Polish Vodka Museum, the Museum of Fantastic Art and temporary exhibitions such as Banksy in 2021. For most though, the F&B lineup is the strongest attraction of all and this includes upmarket Indian from Bombaj Malasa, the casual eatery Spółdzielnia and the real feather in the cap, the Koneser Grill – a meat-centric venue of high sophistication.

SIEMASZKO'S ICONIC LENS

The latest exhibition at Dom Spotkanie Historia is a treasure trove of images capturing Warsaw during the Polish People's Republic (PRL) era.

warsawinsider.pl 45 PHOTOGRAPH BY KEVIN DEMARIA

EXHIBITIONS

We are fortunate to have had Zbyszko Siemaszko, a tireless photojournalist, documenting Warsaw during the 1950s and 60s for Stolica weekly and chronicling the city's rebuilding process for various state institutions. His high-quality cameras and choice of subjects and composition evoke a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era.

In 2016, the Dom Spotkanie Historia (History Meeting House) held an outdoor exhibition and published an album titled *Dream of a City*, featuring Siemaszko's architectural and urban planning photographs, mostly taken from above or from a distance. The current exhibition, "Zbyszko Siemaszko: Warsaw’s Photographer"

presents 200 of his photographs from the 1950s and 60s, along with several hundred slides and selected Stolica covers. It is the first exhibition to offer such a comprehensive cross-section of his work, sourced from the National Digital Archives and the FORUM Polish Photography Agency

and includes news photos, street scenes, neighborhood moments, and domestic interiors—offering a more comprehensive view of everyday life during that era. Jerzy S. Majewski, a respected authority on Warsaw's history, provides commentary to give context to the images.

46 Warsaw Insider | May 2024 PHOTOGRAPHS BY KEVIN DEMARIA

The exhibition begins with oversized photographs that transport you to the Warsaw cityscape from seventy years ago. You start to notice the small traces that still remain in today's Warsaw. As you progress through the exhibit, you experience the feel of a magazine, similar to the ones Siemaszko used to work for. One room, in complete darkness, showcases illuminated images, resembling glowing jewels in the night sky, illustrating Siemaszko's views of neon lights and street scenes from the rooftops.

The curation of the exhibition brings to mind Henri Cartier-Bresson's quote: "It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera... they are made with the eye, heart, and head."

The focus isn't solely on the buildings and cityscape, but also on the workers and people on the streets that fascinated Siemaszko. He captures moments like lovers entwined on dishevelled blankets along the Wisła River, people sheltering from the rain, and those catching a free ride on the back bumper of a bus.

A striking section of the exhibition is the series of photos resembling movie stills, depicting people turning the corner at Nowy Świat and Jerozolimskie Street. This display concept is reminiscent of American fashion photographer Bill Cunningham's work, showcasing people walking in style on the streets of New York.

Another Cartier-Bresson quote seems fitting for a photo showing a young woman running to catch a bus, just as her foot is about to land in a puddle: "To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression."

The exhibition also includes remarkable photographs of the

Siemaszko. Photographer of Warsaw at Dom Spotkań z Historią Karowa 20, dsh.waw.pl

freshly constructed train stations in central Warsaw, which could easily be mistaken for modern photos due to their luxurious and slightly eerie zeitgeist—an architectural style that many contemporary photographers aim to capture.

As the curators of the exhibition, Katarzyna Madoń-Mitzner and Krzysztof Wójcik, aptly put it, "not only can Siemaszko be seen as post-war Warsaw’s 'chronicler,' but he is also a true artist of documentary urban photography."

Copenhagen Cool Meets Warsaw Style

Æter.concept is a unique shopping experience that connects two iconic cities

Æter.concept at the top of Tamka Street in Warsaw is a unique boutique that connects the styles of Warsaw and Copenhagen. The store's inspiration comes from the legend of two mermaid sisters who parted ways on the Baltic Sea—one swam up the Vistula River to Warsaw, while the other went north to Copenhagen. This story underpins the concept, blending Scandinavian minimalism with Warsaw's historic charm.

Founded by Filip Chodzewicz, who spent a decade in Copenhagen, Æter.concept brings high-end street style to Warsaw. The boutique features unisex clothing from Les Deux, a brand known for its use of organic cotton, suede, Harris Tweed, wool, and linen. This collection appeals to those who appreciate quality, understated design, and a timeless color palette.

But it's not just about fashion. Æter.concept also offers a curated selection of unisex skincare and mouth care products from

top Scandinavian brands like FRAMA, Nuori, and Selahatin. This makes it a one-stop shop for those seeking premium clothing and natural beauty products.

The boutique's interior reflects its ethos, combining Scandinavian minimalism with Warsaw's interwar elegance. This unique design creates a space that is both edgy and calm, capturing the "Old Money style with a Scandinavian twist." The balanced mix of male and female shoppers underscores its unisex appeal.

In the coming months, Æter. concept plans to introduce Swedish brand Maggiore, known for its high-grade acetate UV400 sunglasses. The store will also

have a double-sized booth at Splot Słoneczny, a popular Warsaw event, throughout the season, offering more people a chance to experience the "Copenhagen in Warsaw" vibe.

With its focus on quality, unisex appeal, and unique style, Æter.concept is a must-visit destination on Tamka Street. Whether you're seeking fashion, skincare, or a unique shopping experience, this boutique has something for everyone.

The art of thinking well. The legacy of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski

Explore the rich history of the Royal Łazienki Museum and delves into the life and legacy of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski, the magnate who transformed the area into a cultural landmark

The Royal Łazienki Museum in Warsaw is hosting a special exhibition titled "The Art of Good Thinking: Legacy of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski." This exhibition sheds light on the fascinating history of Royal Łazienki and the legacy of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski, the magnate who played a pivotal role in the area's transformation.

ORIGINS OF ŁAZIENKI

While Łazienki is commonly associated with Poland's last king, Stanislaw August, their history dates back even further, to the time of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski. In the late 17th century, Lubomirski, a writer, thinker, and politician with broad interests, built the Bathhouse on the Isle, laying the groundwork for what would later become the Palace on the Isle. To commem-

orate the 350th anniversary of this significant transformation, the Royal Łazienki Museum is hosting an exhibition that explores Lubomirski's life, his extensive network among the European elite, and his contributions to politics and the arts.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition features a range of artifacts and memorabilia from Lubomirski's life, including silver items, horoscopes, and objects excavated from a crypt. Curated by Dr. Kamil Frejlich and Dr. Piotr Skowronski, the exhibit at the Podchorążówka showcases preserved designs from the original Baroque Bathhouse, along with other buildings founded by Lubomirski.

Visitors will also gain insights into Lubomirski's colorful life, with portraits, drawings, and old prints providing a glimpse into his world. Among the more

unique pieces on display are sentimental objects found in the crypt of someone close to Lubomirski, and a horoscope that was significant in the history of the Royal Łazienki, indicating the exact date and time when Lubomirski took possession of the Ujazdów estate.

EXTENDED EXPERIENCES AT THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition extends beyond the Podchorążówka, offering a unique experience at the Palace on the Isle. Visitors can walk along a specially designated trail to explore traces of the original Bathhouse and learn about the baths where Lubomirski used to bathe. For the first time in the museum's history, one of the rooms adorned with 17th-century stucco will be open to the public.

In addition to the exhibit itself, the Royal Łazienki Museum has organized a range of activities,

including workshops, theater shows, museum lessons, literary meetings, and guided tours, ensuring an immersive and educational experience for visitors.

CONCLUSION

"The Art of Good Thinking: Legacy of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski" is a captivating exhibition that invites visitors to explore a lesser-known chapter of Polish history. With its diverse range of exhibits and engaging programming, it's a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of Łazienki and the enduring legacy of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski.

MUSEUMS

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!

Warsaw’s rich history and cultural significance has left it with no shortage of museums to visit. Offering a well-rounded view of the city’s past and present, these are the seven you just shouldn’t miss…

FRYDERYK CHOPIN MUSEUM

The 18th century Ostrogski Palace is the perfect foil for the ultra-modern content of this multi-sensory space. The personal items are captivating (his death mask, gifts from his muse, etc.), but the big victory here is the museum’s ability to suck visitors right back into the times of Chopin through the use of interactive sights and sounds. ul. Okólnik 1, chopin. museum

MUSEUM OF LIFE UNDER COMMUNISM

A deeply personal insight into the former system by allowing visitors to view what Communism meant to the everyday person. Here, rifle and

rummage through a room mockedup to resemble a typical household apartment, watch propaganda films, peer inside a phone box, paw at vintage keep-fit gear or covet the ladies fashions of the time. Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. A haven of trinkets and collectibles, its small size belies its utter magic. ul.

Piękna 28/34, mzprl.pl

MUSEUM OF WARSAW

Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with

curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. The vertiginous views of the Rynek below are worth the admission alone. Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42, muzeumwarszawy.pl

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

60 Warsaw Insider | May 2024

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. Featuring 1,800 ancient relics, papyrus scrolls, Iranian golden masks and even an Egyptian mummy! Al. Jerozolimskie 3, mnw.art.pl

NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. Housing several dozen neons that once lit up Poland, these renovated signs make for Warsaw’s coolest attraction: Instagram them now! ul. Mińska 25 (Soho Factory), neonmuzeum.org

POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul. Anielewicza 6, polin.pl

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Of course, the aftermath is also covered in heartrending detail and concludes with a 3D film that takes viewers swooping over the smoldering ruins of the capital. ul. Grzybowska 79, 1944.pl

NOWE DYNASY VELODROME

Once a hub for Polish cycling, is the focus of a grassroots effort to preserve and revitalize it, ensuring its legacy endures for future generations

The Nowe Dynasy bike track in Warsaw, located at ul. Podskarbińska 11, is more than just an ordinary velodrome; it's a symbol of the city's rich cycling history. This historic track was opened on May 6, 1972, designed by Janusz Kalbarczyk and financed by Polskie Zakłady Optyczne (PZO). It became the cornerstone of the Workers' Sports

Club "Orzeł" PZO, with ambitions of becoming the premier center for Polish track cycling.

From the 1920s through the 1970s, cycling was a popular sport in Warsaw, and Nowe Dynasy contributed significantly to that culture. It hosted the Polish Championships multiple times, as well as the 2nd European Junior Championships in 1974. However, by the late 1970s, the track began showing signs of wear and tear, leading to surface cracks and other structural issues. Despite these challenges, it continued to host competitions until 1985.

After decades of decline and legal disputes over the land, the track was returned to the city of Warsaw in 2018, reigniting interest in its preservation. Local residents, recognizing the track's historical and community value, are advocating for its revitalization. Recent public consultations revealed a strong preference for transforming the area into a green space dedicated to sports and recreation, suggesting a future that honors the past while embracing new uses. The future of Nowe Dynasy depends on the support of the community and the commitment to preserve a unique piece of Warsaw's cycling heritage.
