ustoms and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized a shipment of 1,200 counterfeit Tiffany & Co. bracelets this week at Miami International Airport. The jewelry was part of a shipment from China and marked another major jewelry seizure at MIA this year. Over the summer, CBP officersintercepted a shipment of 720 pieces of fake Van Cleef & Arpels jewelryworth more than $6 million. If genuine and sold at MSRP, the Tiffany pieces--which were copies of various models of the retailer’s iconic .925 sterling silver “Return to Tiffany” bracelet-could have totaled as much as $2.85 million.

In a news release, the CBP said it agents grew suspicious of the counterfeit bling because the bracelets “did not appear to be of the quality consistent with the products normally manufactured by the trademark holders;” in this case, Tiffany. Import specialists with the CBP examined the bracelets more closely and determined that the bracelets were indeed counterfeit. MIA Port Director Christopher Maston said the CBP has an “exceptional” team of officers and import specialists who work closely with companies like Tiffany to identify products that infringe on companies’ intellectual property. Jewelry and watches by the industry’s best-known brands are among the world’s most copied goods and, last year, they were also the most seized in the U.S., surpassing even fake handbags. A report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security released in the spring stated that in 2014, CBP officials nabbed fake jewelry and watches worth a total of $375.4 million at retail, representing 31 percent of the total dollar amount of counterfeit goods seized all year.

alled “Yorick,” the skull is the world’s largest known meteorite carving, according to the auction house. Artist Lee Downey created the piece by acid-etching the carving to uncover the meteorite’s singular, lattice-like “Widmanstätten” pattern. Gibeon meteorite, which is iron-based and one of the rarest forms of the debris, originated billions of years ago from an unstable planet that existed briefly between Jupiter and Mars. During its journey through space, the meteorite’s alloys crystallized to form an octahedral crystalline structure that cannot be recreated on Earth. Bonhams said when the meteorite met the Earth’s atmosphere some 1,000 years ago, it exploded over the Kalahari Desert in Namibia and was discovered by the Nama people. Downey’s carving weighs 21,070 grams, which amounts to a little more than 46

pounds. “By sculpting the skull’s undulating curves, and because each crystal reacted uniquely to the acid treatment, Downey brought out features never seen before in Gibeon,” said Claudia Florian, Bonhams co-consulting director for lapidary works of art, specimen gemstones and minerals. “It’s out of this world.” Downey said he chose Gibeon meteorite because it “best embodies the ‘mystery’” of the human skull. He took measurements from an actual male skull to ensure realism and accuracy, and named the piece Yorick as a reference to the dead court jester whose skull triggers a monologue by Hamlet in the play of the same name. Bonhams will put Yorick up on the auction block at its Los Angeles Lapidary Works of Art, Gemstones and Minerals sale scheduled for Nov. 24.

TAG Heuer

Unveiled its smartwatch “Connected”

T

AG Heuer’s answer to Apple Watch debut in Nov. 9 and is called the “Connected,” the Swiss watch brand revealed recently. Developed in partnership with Apple competitors Google and Intel, Connected reportedly will retail for about $1,400 and will be a digital version of one of TAG Heuer’s best-selling models, the black Carrera. Though it is a smartwatch, the Connected will be recognizable as a TAG, CEO JeanClaude Biver stressed back in March when the brand announced its plans at Baselworld. “Apple Watch looks like Apple,” he said. “TAG Heuer’s will look like TAG Heuer. TAG Heuer will have the DNA of TAG Heuer.” Other than that, TAG Heuer has neither released nor confirmed many details about its forthcoming smartwatch, though it now has a countdown websitefor the Connected and gave a glimpse of it on Twitter Monday with this Death Star-esque photo. TAG Heuer’s Connected teases coincided with the release of parent company’s LVMH latest year-to-date financials, which showed strong sales growth for both its

watch and jewelry brands. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton reported Monday its Watches & Jewelry division recorded 10 percent organic (with comparable structure and constant exchange rates) revenue growth through the first nine months of the year. As reported, sales were up 22 percent, from $2.25 billion to $2.73 billion. LVMH reported that Bulgari performed “remarkably well” while Hublot “grew rapidly” and opened its second production facility in the Swiss town of Nyon. TAG Heuer, meanwhile, “continued the development of its core offering.” LVMH also mentioned the unveiling of the brand’s smartwatch next month, but only briefly. Total sales for the Paris-based luxury goods conglomerate reached $28.80 billion through the first nine months of the year, up 6 percent with comparable structure and constant exchange rates. Watches & Jewelry was the top performer among all business groups, topping Wines & Spirits and Perfumes & Cosmetics (both up 7 percent), as well as Fashion & Leather Goods (up 5 percent), which sells the iconic Louis Vuitton handbags.

group of 67 veterans from the Los Angeles area had the chance to fly to Washington, D.C. and visit the memorials dedicated to their service this week, thanks to Breitling’s support of an organization called Honor Flight Network. Honor Flight Networkis a non-profit volunteer organization that transports veterans to the nation’s capital free of charge, to visit and reflect at the memorials there. This most recent trip, organized specifically by Honor Flight Southland, was the largest flight to date to depart from Los Angeles. “Time is running out for many of these veterans, and we are fortunate to work with Honor Flight Network to give them ‘one last mission’ and honor them as they so rightly deserve,” said Breitling U.S.A. President Thierry Prissert. Breitling is a longtime supporter of Honor Flight Network, helping to fly more than 400 veterans to Washington in support of the organization’s mission. Californiabased jeweler Westime, a Breitling partner, has joined the watch company in donating to the organization. To further support Honor Flight Network, Breitling has introduced the special edition Honor Flight Navitimer 01, a timepiece that features the Honor Flight logo on the case back along with the state-

ment “Honor Flight – One Last Mission.” The watch is equipped with the watch brand’s in-house Caliber 01 chronograph movement, and proceeds from its sale will go to further support the Honor Flight Network. “It is a privilege to work with Breitling and Honor Flight Southland,” said Westime President Greg Simonian. “Our veterans give so much for our country, so it feels very meaningful to thank them with the trip to see the memorials in Washington, D.C.”

he rose gold-colored Apple Watch, which the tech company unveiled in early September, is be one of the 20 models that Target stores carry. Port Washington, N.Y.--From wearable devices to activity trackers, the number of consumers who own a smartwatch could increase as much as 4 percent this holiday season, according to recent data from the NPD Group. The marketing consulting company said that when it comes to smartwatches, consumers at first were stalled by price tags and continued uncertainty about the functionality of the products. However, the release of the Apple Watch last April “has made majors ripples within the smartwatch sector.” “(Apple Watch) is much more of a mainstream product than other generation one smartwatches,” said Weston Henderek, director of wearables and connected intelligence at NPD Group, adding that even that product may not reach its full potential until the launch of a secondgeneration version that could offer integrated cellular connectivity. What “integrated cellular connectively” means is a smartwatch will not be reliant on syncing with a smartphone. The current version of the Apple Watch, explains David Riley of NPD Group, does not have its own cellular connectivity. The device can connect to the iPhone via Bluetooth and then use the cellular connectivity of the phone, but without the phone, has no ability to connect to a cellular network. “Independent cellular connectivity is one of the key differentiators that will accelerate smartwatch growth even further in the coming year,” Henderek said. Another type of smartwatch, activity trackers and digital fitness devices, already has seen significant growth that will continue into the holiday shopping season, NPD Group said. The retail sales of these items increased 120 percent in the first eight months of the year, from $343.5 million to $754.8 million. “That level of growth is expected to extend through the end of the year, making activity trackers some of the hottest tech gifts this holiday,” said Ben Arnold, executive director and industry analyst

of consumer electronics at NPD Group. “Awareness of these products has grown tremendously over the past year, and there are a diverse number of products on the market offering a variety of features and price points.” He added that manufactures continue to partner with designers to increase the appeal of the products. “There is a product for every time of consumer, from the most active athlete to the mom who just wants to remember when to pick up her kids from soccer practice, on the market,” Arnold said. NPD Group said in November 2013, awareness of activity trackers was just more than 30 percent of the U.S. market, with younger consumers being the most knowledgeable. Now, in 2015, the situation has changed--close to 82 percent of the market claims awareness of activity tracking devices. “The wearables industry has come to a crossroads in the past six months, as the quality, depth and price points of activity trackers and smartwatches have expanded at a rapid rate,” Henderek said. “The two sectors are much more segmented now, with the activity tracker category in particular having a wide variety of price ranges, depending on features, quality and design.”

significant upward trend for over twenty years is what characterizes the jewelry workshop Kapsaski. It all started in 1990, by Demetrios Kapsaskis, who started the first steps of the family business. The aim was to create jewelry inspired by the rich tradition of Greek and Byzantine art of jewelry. Initially all the jewels were hand made from materials like silver and murano crystal. In 2008, the son of D. Kapsaskis, Basilis, after completing his studies in designing and manufacturing of jewelry, began to participate actively in the workshop. Utilizing the inspirations of his father, Basilis Kapsaskis had as a goal to offer jewelry characterized by timeless beauty, as well as contemporary style, and in this direction he “worked” with genuine

Swarovski crystals, as well as with precious and semiprecious stones, with finishes of 22 carat gold in the new designs. The company’s slogan: «GIVING TIMELESS BEAUTY A MODERN TWIST», i.e., giving the timeless beauty, a modern dimension is not a coincidence. Rio Tinto 65 red and pink diamonds, on a world tour

R

io Tinto once again has four fancy reds in its annual tender of special stones from the Argyle in Western Australia, the mine that produces the vast majority of the world’s pink and red diamonds. Including the four fancy reds, there are

-- Argyle Aurora, a 1.47-carat fancy red oval shape named for the princess inSleeping Beauty --Argyle Allegro, a 0.79-carat fancy red radiant-shaped diamond, named after the brisk and lively movement in ballet --Argyle Spectre, a 1.93-carat fancy-

total of 65 diamonds in this year’s Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender, up from 55 last year. There also are five “hero” stones this year, top-quality diamonds to which Rio Tinto assigns a name. This year, Rio Tinto’s partnership with The Australian Ballet inspired the names assigned to the hero stones. -- Argyle Prima, a 1.20-carat pearshaped fancy red

vivid purplish-pink shield-shaped diamond that takes its name from the ballet Le Spectre de la rose --Argyle Élevé, a 1.44-carat fancy-intense pink emerald shape inspired by a movement in ballet Viewings of the Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender in Hong Kong are by invitation only. Following the viewings there, Rio Tinto will bring the diamonds to New York and then back to Australia.

RapNet: 1-ct. diamond prices down 1 percent

T

he RapNet Diamond Index (RAPI) for October shows continued softness in polished diamond prices, with trading improved but sales still below last year’s levels. According to data released earlier this week by Rapaport, the RAPI for 1-carat, Gemological Institute of America-graded diamonds fell 1 percent in October and is down 8 percent year-to-date. While 1-carat diamond prices continue to slip, the greatest decline so far this year has been in the price of 0.30 carat diamonds, with prices falling 20 percent between Jan. 1 and Nov. 1, the RAPI shows. Double-digit drops also were recorded for half-carat stones (down 18 percent) and 3-carat diamonds (down 14 percent) in that time period. Overall, the Rapaport Monthly Report shows that market conditions remained virtually unchanged in October. With weak demand in Hong Kong and China, dealers still are betting high on

the holiday season in the United States. As Rapaport put it, “all eyes (are) on the U.S. retail sector,” particularly in light of the marketing efforts with the two-stone ring at Signet Jewelers and the re-launch of “A Diamond is Forever” by De Beers for its branded diamond, Forevermark. On the rough manufacturing side, margins remained squeezed and there is continued consolidation in the midstream. The miners are holding on to rough and reducing production--De Beers, for example, cut third quarter production by nearly 30 percent--while continuing to decrease prices. Rapaport said that rough prices need to decline by at least 20 percent to ensure reasonable profit margins in the middle market. The market “continues to be challenging in 2015,” Rapaport noted.

De Beers

Machine separation synthetic - mineral diamond Editing: Dimitris Stamoulis

L

ondon-De Beers has begun using its new automated melee screening device at its International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research facility in Surat, and plans to begin offering the same at the IIDGR lab in Antwerp next month. The machine screens 500 carats at a time of colorless, or near-colorless, diamonds between one point and 0.20 carats in size to weed out lab-grown melee from mined. The device automatically feeds the stones, table-down, into a testing station. After testing, the diamonds are dispensed into one of five bins: pass, refer (more testing is needed), refer Type II (more testing needed, higher likelihood of being synthetic), non-diamond (simulant) or purge (for diamonds that were erroneously loaded into the machine). They then are returned in a sealed IIDGR package that De Beers said is tamperproof. The potential mixing of less-expensive lab-grown diamonds with natural, or mined, diamonds is of growing concern in the industry as diamond growers up production levels and improve quality. Melee is particularly problematic because it often slips through the supply chain untested due to the fact that there aren’t many cost-effective and efficient ways of checking these tiny stones. In order to combat the problem, De Beers introduced an automated melee screener in January 2014, shortly after the Gemological Institute of Americaunveiled the DiamondCheck, which also can separate lab-grown melee from mined, starting with diamonds that are as small as one point. De Beers initially said it would be leasing out the devices to sightholders beginning in the second quarter 2014 and installing multiple machines at the IIDGR in Antwerp later that same year. (The

IIDGR in Surat was not yet open at that time.) David Johnson, a De Beers spokesperson, said that total of five pre-production prototype automated melee screening devices have been in use in Antwerp for two years, as the IIDGR has been testing their durability and accuracy. The beginning of the service this week marks the transition from testing to widespread use mode for the machine, which IIDGR President Jonathan Kendall said in a statement will “play an important role in supporting both trade and consumer confidence.” “Sellers will be able to provide potential buyers with pre-checked goods in sealed IIDGR packages, removing any potential concerns around disclosure,” he said. De Beers began using the automated melee screener, along with other proprietary instruments, at the IIDGR lab in Surat on Wednesday. The facility has a room specifically designed for melee testing. Melee testing is set to begin Nov. 12 at the IIDGR lab in Antwerp, which also has a room outfitted specifically for melee. The service will be offered at an introductory discount of 50 percent off in both India and Belgium through the end of the year. For more information, emailtesting@iidgr.com or visit IIDGR.com. As for sightholders, De Beers ended up selling, not leasing, them the automated melee screeners. Large manufacturers including Kiran Gems, Tasaki, Rosy Blue and Stullerhave acquired the devices, playing $55,000 plus a three-year support and maintenance charge of $10,000 a year.
