Though today he's best remembered as the creator of the Winnie the Pooh series of children's books, British writer A.A. Milne was actually a much more prolific playwright than he was a juvenile literature scribe, penning over 30 plays in his lifetime. This collection of Milne's early works for the stage will please Pooh fans curious to learn more about Milne's literary range. First Plays By A A Milne Classic Drama Alan Alexander Milne (18 January 1882 - 31 January 1956) was an English author, best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and for various children's poems. Milne was a noted writer, primarily as a playwright, before the huge success of Pooh overshadowed all his previous work. A. A. Milne was born in Hampstead, London to parents Vince Milne, who was Scottish, and Sarah Marie Milne (nee Heginbotham) and grew up at Henley House School, 6/7 Mortimer Road (now Crescent), Kilburn, a small public school run by his father. One of his teachers was H. G. Wells, who taught there in 1889-90. Milne attended Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, [4] where he studied on a mathematics scholarship. While there, he edited and wrote for Granta, a student magazine. He collaborated with his brother Kenneth and their articles appeared over the initials AKM. Milne's work came to the attention of the leading British humour magazine Punch, where Milne was to become a contributor and later an assistant editor. First plays From A A Milne Before A. A. There is good browsing among the leaves of the wood and the grasses of the meadow, as every well-instructed angler knows. The bright emerald tips that break from the hemlock and the balsam like verdant flames have a pleasant savour to the tongue. The leaves of the sassafras are full of spice, and the bark of the black-birch twigs holds a fine cordial. Crinkle-root is spicy, but you must partake of it delicately, or it will bite your tongue. Spearmint and peppermint never lose their charm for the palate that still remembers the delights of youth. Wild sorrel has an agreeable, sour, shivery flavour. Even the tender stalk of a young blade of grass is a thing that can be chewed by a person of childlike mind with much contentment. Reproduction of the original. Henry Jackson van Dyke (November 10, 1852 - April 10, 1933) was an American author, educator, and clergyman. *Biography* Henry van Dyke was born on November 10, 1852, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Poly Prep Country Day School in 1869, Princeton University, in 1873 and from Princeton Theological Seminary, 1877. He served as a professor of English literature at Princeton between 1899 and 1923. Van Dyke chaired the committee that wrote the first Presbyterian printed liturgy, The Book of Common Worship of 1906. In 1908-09 Dr. van Dyke was a lecturer at the University of Paris.By appointment of President Woodrow Wilson, a friend and former classmate of van Dyke, he became Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1913. Shortly after his appointment, World War I threw Europe into dismay. Americans all around Europe rushed to Holland as a place of refuge. Although inexperienced as an ambassador, van Dyke conducted himself with the skill of a trained diplomat, maintaining the rights of Americans in Europe and organizing work for their relief. He later related his experiences and perceptions in the book Pro Patria (1921).Van Dyke resigned as ambassador at the beginning of December 1916 and returned to the United States. He was subsequently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and received many other honors. Van Dyke was a friend of Helen Keller. Keller writes, 'Dr. van Dyke is the kind of a friend to have when one is up against a difficult problem. He will take trouble, days and nights of trouble, if it is for somebody else or for some cause he is interested in. 'I'm not an optimist, ' says Dr. van Dyke, 'there's too much evil in the world and in me. Nor am I a pessimist; there is too much good in the world and in God. So I am just a meliorist,

'Five Mice in a Mouse-trap' from Laura E. Richards. Children's author, biographies, poetry, and others (1850-1943). Five mice in a mouse-trap By Laura E. The books are available in print, as well as ebooks. DigiCat hopes you will treat this work with the acknowledgment and passion it deserves as a classic of world literature. Utterly enchanting children's book with the Man in the Moon as narrator and principle storyteller. The mice are actually children, five siblings the Man in the Moon calls Nibble, Brighteyes, Fluff, Puff, and Downy the baby, who come to live in an eccentric house he dubs the Mouse-Trap, in the little village of Nomatterwhat, in the state of Nomatterwhere. The Man in the Moon uses a giant mirror to look down on all the children below. He has a dog with the unlikely name of Bmfkmgth ('and none of you will be able to pronounce that, except the children who live in Wales'). There is an awful lot of effort gone into this book, which is jampacked with stories, songs and rhymes, featuring talking dolls, walking beds, trousers made of diamonds and steeplechasing whale. The Man in the Moon is also something of a Sandman, taking the children on various dream journeys to China, the North Pole, and the Indian Ocean, where they meet or hear about lively characters with pleasingly funny names like Pun-Chin and Michikee Moo. This book has been considered by academicians and scholars of great significance and value to literature. This forms a part of the knowledge base for future generations. We havent used any OCR or photocopy to produce this book. The whole book has been typeset again to produce it without any errors or poor pictures and errant marks. 'Five Little Mice in a Mouse Trap by the Man in the Moon' was a children's book authored by Laura E. Richards was back in 1880. The book was illustrated with numerous small black and white drawings, which of course are now in the public domain. The author of this current book has enlarged these black and white drawings and placed one on each of the large 8.5' X 11' pages. This has of course caused a lack of quality and a degree of pixilation in the images. However, as outlines for children to colour in with pencils or crayons, this should not cause a major problem. It was just striking three as I came up the companionstairs on to the deck of the Cottage City, into the clear topaz light of a June morning in Alaska: light that had not failed through all the night, for in this far northern latitude the sun only just dips beneath the horizon at midnight for an hour, leaving all the earth and sky still bathed in limpid yellow light, gently paling at that mystic time and glowing to its full glory again as the sun rises above the rim. Our steamer had left the open sea and entered the Taku Inlet, and we were steaming very slowly up it, surrounded on every side by great glittering blocks of ice, flashing in the sunshine as they floated by on the buoyant blue water. How blue it was, the colouring of sea and sky! Both were so vividly blue, the note of each so deep, so intense, one seemed almost intoxicated with colour. I stepped to the vessel's side, then made my way forward and stood there; I, the lover of the East, dazzled by the beauty of the North! The marvellous picture before me was painted in but three colours, blue, gold, and white. A Girl of the Klondike Five Nights Appearing in the final year of Victoria's reign, Anna Lombard captured many preoccupations of the fin-de-siecle period and pushed them beyond the bounds of Victorian acceptability towards the greater freedoms of the twentieth century. This hugely popular novel (thirty editions, six million copies sold) examines male and female sexuality, extending the notion of New Woman feminism and proposing a new masculinity to match it. Its transgressive interracial sexual and social relations are set in a highly eroticized Indian landscape and against the rigidities of Victorian imperialism. Anna Lombard challenges and subverts a wide range of the most fiercely defended ideologies of its time. For modern readers familiar with late Victorian conventions, it retains its power to surprise and shock, and extends our knowledge and understanding of the ways in which Victorian writers reflected and constructed social attitudes. For all readers, then as now, it is mesmerisingly readable. This new edition will extend understanding of women's writing of the period, and introduces a new generation of readers to the work of a once popular and continually engrossing novelist, Victoria Cross (a pen name of Annie Sophie Cory). This volume demonstrates the significance middlebrow writing had for the dissemination of new concepts of gender to wider audiences. By exploring the media culture between 1890 and 1930 it gives evidence of the relative proximity between middlebrow writers and the avant-garde in their concern for gender issues. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1)

Just that little sound, as the sticks flirted with the drumheads to keep the men in step; for Her Majesty's 404th Fusiliers were marching 'easy.' So it was called; and it meant with the men smoking, and carrying their rifles as they pleased-shouldered, at the trail, slung muzzle up or muzzle down. But, all the same, it was a miserable fiction to call it marching easy, for it was impossible to make that march anything but hard. Why? Because of the road. Both homes were designed by Sara's mother. The house on Kingsbury Place had a private suite for Sara on the second floor. Guests entered through a separate entrance and were admitted by appointment. This suite is where Sara worked, slept, and often dined alone Two collections of poetry together in one volume by American poet Sara Teasdale: Flame and Shadow; And, Helen of Troy and Other Poems.Sara Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri, where she attended a school that was founded by the grandfather of another great poet from St. Louis--T. S. Eliot. She later associated herself more with New York City. Her first book of poems was 'Sonnets to Duse' (1907), but 'Helen of Troy' (1911) was the true launch of her career, followed by 'Rivers to the Sea' (1915), 'Love Songs' (1917), 'Flame and Shadow' (1920) and more. Her final volume, 'Strange Victory', is considered by many to be predictive of her suicide. Sara Trevor Teasdale was born on the 8th August 1884 in St Louis, Missouri. Her well received second volume 'Helen of Troy and Other Poems', published 4 years later, was praised for its lyrical talents and subject matter. She was courted by various men among them Vachel Lindsay, a great poet but one who thought he could not provide a suitable standard of living for her. Sara then married Ernst Filsinger, who also admired her poetry, in 1914. Sara's third poetry collection, 'Rivers to the Sea', was published in 1915 and was a best seller. A year later, in 1916, the couple moved to New York City. In 1917 she released her collection 'Love Songs' and the following year it won three awards: the Columbia University Poetry Society prize, the annual prize of the Poetry Society of America and, as a crowning achievement, the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for poetry By 1929 Sara was deeply unhappy and lonely and decided to divorce. To satisfy the criteria she moved across state lines for three months. She did not wish to inform Filsinger, and only at the insistence of her lawyers, as the

Twenty years as an outsider scouring the underbelly of American culture has made Howard Hampton a uniquely hard-nosed guide to the heart of pop darkness. Bridging the fatalistic, intensely charged space between Apocalypse Now Redux and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” his writing breaks down barriers of ignorance and arrogance that have segregated art forms from each other and often from the world at large. In the freewheeling spirit of Pauline Kael, Lester Bangs, and Manny Farber, Hampton calls up the extremist, underground tendencies and archaic forces simmering beneath the surface of popular forms. Ranging from the kinetic poetry of Hong Kong cinema and the neo–New Wave energy of Irma Vep to the punk heroines of Sleater-Kinney and Ghost World, Born in Flames plays odd couples off one another: pitting Natural Born Killers against Forrest Gump, contrasting Jean-Luc Godard with Steven Spielberg, defending David Lynch against aesthetic ideologues, invoking The Curse of the Mekons against Fredric Jameson’s Postmodernism, and introducing D. H. Lawrence to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. “We are born in flames,” sang the incandescent Lora Logic, and here those flames are a source of illumination as well as destruction, warmth as well as consumption. From the scorched-earth works of action-movie provocateurs Seijun Suzuki and Sam Peckinpah to the cargo cult soundscapes of Pere Ubu and the Czech dissidents Plastic People of the Universe, Born in Flames is a headlong plunge into the passions and disruptive power of art. Emil is a wanderer, a fugitive from an unjust law, and being alive is his only crime. Emil is an Abnormal - a seemingly normal human being gifted with superhuman abilities. From the second Emil first channeled the light energy his body produced, his life was no longer his own. Abnormals like him are forced to join the king's covert division named Legion to enforce his tyranny, or be put down like beasts. For years Emil has been able to evade the hand of the king and his capture by Legion, until on a seemingly normal night Emil's village is ambushed, and he is forced to helplessly watch as a fire-manipulating Abnormal sent by the king leads a massacre that destroys everything he loves. Enraged and sick of running, Emil swears a path of revenge. For the ones he loves he picks up the sword to single-handedly bring justice to a dying world and serve as the last light in a world covered in darkness. The lure of Cape Cod is strong for Miss Bassett, and for the setting of her new story, 'Flood Tide,' she has returned to the little seaside town of Wilton, wherein lies the Harbor Road and where dwell Zenas Henry and the Captains three, those well-known and well-liked characters of her earlier books. Young Ted Turner befriends his employer's disabled son, and together the two boys experiment with electricity and invent their own telephone, which proves useful against an anarchist plot and a major flood. The book 'Flower o' the Heather' written by Robert William MacKenna revolves around the moments of killing time. An excerpt from the first chapter goes thus 'It is a far cry from the grey walls of Balliol College to the sands at Dumfries, and many ways may lead a man from one to the other. So thought I, Walter de Brydde of the City of Warwick, when on an April morning in the year of grace 1685 I stood upon Devorgilla's bridge and watched the silver Nith glide under the red arches. I was there in obedience to a whim; and the whim, with all that went before it--let me set it down that men may judge me for what I was--was the child of a drunken frolic. It befell in this wise.' A coming of age tale set in Old Scotland, a romance to be cherished and remembered. Scotland's national bibliography, listing books, periodicals, and major articles of Scottish interest published all over the world. Covers material issued since 1988. Reproduction of the original: Flower of the Dusk by Myrtle Reed Excerpt from Flower of the Dusk HE pines, darkly purple, towered against the sunset. Behind the hills, the splendid tapestry glowed and flamed, sending far messages of light to the grey East, where lay the sea, crooning itself to sleep. Bare boughs dripped rain upon the sodden earth, where the dead leaves had so long been hidden by the snow. The thousand sounds and scents Of Spring at last had waked the world. Louis Tracy (1863 - 1928) was a British journalist, and prolific writer of fiction. He used the pseudonyms Gordon Holmes and Robert Fraser, which were at times shared with M. P. Shiel, a collaborator from the start of the twentieth century. He was born in Liverpool to a well-to-do middle-class family. At first he was educated at home and then at the French Seminary at Douai. Around 1884 he became a reporter for a local paper - 'The Northern Echo' at Darlington, circulating in parts of Durham and North Yorkshire; later he worked for papers in Cardiff and Allahabad. During 1892-1894 he was closely associated with Arthur Harmsworth, in 'The Sun' and 'The Evening News and Post'. 'O, la, la! See, then, the best of good luck for each one of us this year!' Although Mere Pitou's rotund body, like Falstaff's, was fat and scant o' breath, and the Pilgrims' Way was steep and rocky, some reserve of energy enabled her to clap her hands and scream the tidings of high fortune when the notes of a deep-toned bell pealed from an alp still hidden among the trees. Three girls, fifty paces higher up the path, halted when they heard that glad cry-and, indeed, who would not give ear to such augury? 'Why should the clang of a bell foretell good luck, Mother?' cried Barbe, the youngest, seventeen that September day, and a true Breton maid, with eyes like sloes, and cheeks the tint of ripe russet apples, and full red lips ever ready to smile shyly, revealing the big, white, even teeth of a peasant. Foe-Farrell by Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch

As for me, I had rooms at first in Jermyn Street, then chambers in the Inner TempleÑmy father, who had been Chairman of Quarter Sessions, holding the opinion that I ought to read for the Bar, that I might be better qualified in due time to deal out local justice down in Warwickshire. I read a little, played cricket a good deal, stuck out three or four London Seasons, travelled a bit, shot a bit in East Africa (Oh, I forgot to say I'd put in a year in the South African War); climbed a bit, in Switzerland, and afterwards in the Himalayas; come home to write a paper for the Geographical Society; got bitten with Socialism and certain Fabian notions, and put in some time with an East-End Settlement besides attending many crowded and unsavoury public meetings to urge what was vaguely known as Betterment. When I took courage and made a clean breast of my new opinions to my father, the old man answered very composedly that he too had been a Radical in his time, and had come out of it all right. É By all means let me go on with my spouting: capital practice for public life: hoped I should take my place one of these days in the County Council at home: wouldn't even mind seeing me in Parliament, etc.Ñall with the wise calm of one who has passed his three-score years and ten, found the world good, made it a little better, hunted his own harriers and learnt, long since, every way in which hares run. So I returned and somehow found myself pledged to compete as a Progressive for the next London County CouncilÑfor a constituency down Bethnal Green way. In all this, you see, my orbit and Foe's wouldn't often intersect. But we dined together on birthdays and other occasions. One year I took him down to the Derby, on the ground that it was part of a liberal education. In the paddock he nodded at a horse in blinkers and said, 'What's the matter with that fellow?' 'St. Amant,' said I, and began to explain why Hayhoe had put blinkers on him. 'Where does he stand in the betting?' asked Foe. 'Why, man,' said I, 'at 5 to 1. You can't risk good money on a horse of that temper. I've put mine on the French horse over thereÑGouvernantÑeasy favouriteÑ7 to 4 on.' 'Oh,' said he, in a silly sort of way, 'I thought St. Amant might be your French horseÑit's a French name isn't it?É As for your Gouvernant, I advise you to run for your life and hedge: the animal is working up for a stage fright. A touch more and he's dished before the flag drops. Now, whether the blinkers have done it or not, that St. Amant is firm as a rock.' 'How the devilÑ' I began. 'That's a fine horse, too, over yonder,' he said, pointing one out with his umbrella. 'John o' Gaunt,' said I: 'ran second to St. Amant for the Guineas, and second to Henry the First in the Newmarket, with St. Amant third. The running has been all in-and-out this season. But how the devil you spotted him, when I didn't know you could tell a horse's head from his sternÑ' 'I don't profess to much more,' said Foe; 'but it's my job to read an animal's eye, and what he's fit for by the quiver under his skin. Now, I'd only a glimpse of St. Amant's eye, across his blinkers, and your John o' Gaunt is a stout oneÑinclined, you tell me, to run in second place. But if your money's on Gouvernant, hurry while there's time and set it right. If you've thirty seconds to spare when you've done that,' he added, 'you may put up a tenner for me on St. AmantÑbut don't bother. Your book may want some arranging.' A story told during the Great War, in the trenches in France. In

This is the first Chronology of Portuguese Literature to be published in any language. It presents a comprehensive year-by-year list of significant and representative works of literature published mainly in Portuguese from 1128 to the beginning of the current millennium. As a reference tool, it displays the continuity and variety of the literature of the oldest European country, and documents the development of Portuguese letters from their origins to the year 2000, while also presenting the year of birth and death of each author. This book is an ideal resource for students and academics of Portuguese literature and Lusophone cultures. Camilo's religious sentiment, his sense of maternal deprivation and his presentation of love (in particular the fictional representation of his relationship with Ana Placido) topics frequently discussed by previous critics - are reassessed through an examination of non-fiction sources as well as through

The Reverend Thomas Firminger Thiselton-Dyer, MA, Oxon was a son of William George Thiselton-Dyer, physician and of Catherine Jane, née Firminger. He was educated at King's College School and at Pembroke College, Oxford. He was an English writer of popular non-fiction books, including British Customs: Past and Present, The Folk-lore of Plants, and perhaps most famously, Strange Pages from Family Papers, which was considered a masterpiece of popular historical writing. It would be difficult to overestimate the value which must be attached to the plays of Shakespeare in connection with the social life of the Elizabethan age. Possessed of a rich treasury of knowledge of a most varied kind, much of which he may be said to have picked up almost intuitively, he embellished his writings with a choice store of illustrations descriptive of the period in which he lived. Possessed of a rich treasury of knowledge of a most varied kind, much of which he may be said to have picked up almost intuitively, he embellished his writings with a choice store of illustrations descriptive of the period in which he lived. Apart, too, from his copious references to the manners and customs of the time, he seems to have had not only a wide knowledge of many technical subjects, but also an intimate acquaintance with the folk-lore of bygone days. How far this was the case may be gathered from the following pages, in which are collected and grouped together, as far as arrangement would permit, the various subjects relating to this interesting and popular branch of our domestic history. It only remains for me to add that the edition of the poet's plays made use of is the 'Globe,' published by Messrs. Macmillan. T. F. Thiselton Dyer. Rev. Followers of the Trail by Zoe Meyer In the depths of the green wilderness, where dark spruce and hemlock guard the secrets of the trail, are still to be found wild creatures who know little of man and who regard him with more of curiosity than of fear. Woodland ponds, whose placid waters have never reflected the dark lines of a canoe, lie like jewels in their setting of green hills; ponds where soft-eyed deer come down to drink at twilight, and where the weird laughter of the loon floats through the morning mists. Toward the south, however, man is fast penetrating the secrets of the forest, blazing dim trails and leaving fear and destruction in the wake of his guns and traps. Harold Edward Bindloss was an English novelist who wrote many adventure novels set in western Canada. Bindloss was born in Liverpool in 1866. He was more than 30 years old before he began writing. Previously he worked as a farmer in Canada and as a cargo heaver, a planter, and at other jobs in southern climes. He returned to London. In 1898, he published his first book, a non-fiction account based on his travels in Africa, called In the Niger Country. This was followed by dozens of novels. He was a popular writer. One reviewer writes: 'A new book by Harold Bindloss is always welcome. He tells a story well indeed, but one likes his books best perhaps for the environment which he knows so well how to sketch. He has written charming stories of the Canadian Northwest and one remembers with pleasure his novels Prescott of Saskatchewan and Winston of the Prairie', (Oakland Tribune, 1915). He had trouble on getting on board of her, for there were a good many bullocks swimming about her side waiting until the red-capped crew should heave them on board beneath the derrick-boom by means of a rope twisted round their horns. It probably hurt the bullocks, and now and then one succumbed to a broken neck during the operation; but the

Reproduction of the original: Forging the Blades by Bertram Mitford Bertram Mitford was a prolific British author. Many of his novels are set in South Africa. A fantastic historical adventure novel set during the Zulu uprising of 1906, written by prolific colonial writer, novelist, essayist and cultural critic Bertram Mitford.****The river swirled on through the heat, the sweltering, fever-breathing heat. The long, deep reach made but scant murmur, save where the boughs of a luxuriant vegetation dipped on its surface. Above, on either hand, masses of rolling verdure, tall forest trees, undergrowth in rich profusion, and, high up against the blue sky, battlemented rock walls. Two dark objects relieved the shimmering smoothness of the surface of the reach--two minute dark objects to the ordinary observer, afloat, motionless. Yet why should these remain motionless instead of floating down with the fairly strong, though smooth, current? Well, there might have been, behind each, about twelve feet of ugly, scaly saurian, whose powerful under-water stroke kept them stationary, while watchful, against the descending stream.A grassy glade slopes down to the bank, tailing away inland into a path something like a 'ride' in an English game covert. Great trees, rising overhead, shade this, in a dimness which shuts out, save in a faint network, the glare of the molten sun. Published in 1908, 'Forging the Blades' is a tale of romance, intrigue, and adventure set in the wilds of the African Veldt following Rourkes Drift and the Zulu wars. This fast-paced story with exotic settings delights as well as informs the readers about history. The river swirled on through the heat, the sweltering, fever-breathing heat. R.M. Ballantyne, in full Robert Michael Ballantyne (born April 24, 1825, Edinburgh, Scot.--died Feb. 8, 1894, Rome, Italy), Scottish author chiefly famous for his adventure story The Coral Island (1858). This and all of Ballantyne's stories were written from personal experience. The heroes of his books are models of self-reliance and moral uprightness. Snowflakes and Sunbeams; or, The Young Fur Traders (1856) is a boys' adventure story based on Ballantyne's experiences with the Hudson's Bay Company. Annoyed by a geography-related mistake he had made in The Coral Island, he afterward traveled widely to research the backgrounds of his stories. OR, SOLITUDE IN THE WILDERNESS. THE OUTSKIRTER. To some minds solitude is depressing, to others it is congenial. It was the former to our friend John Robinson; yet he had a large share of it in his chequered life. John--more familiarly known as Jack--was as romantic as his name was the reverse. To look at him you would have supposed that he was the most ordinary of common-place men, but if you had known him, as we did, you would have discovered that there was a deep, silent, but ever-flowing river of enthusiasm, energy, fervour--in a word, romance--in his soul, which seldom or never manifested itself in words, and only now and then, on rare occasions, flashed out in a lightning glance, or blazed up in a fiery countenance. For the most part Jack was calm as a mill-pond, deep as the Atlantic, straightforward and grave as an undertaker's clerk and good-humoured as an unspoilt and healthy child. Robert Michael Ballantyne (24 April 1825 8 February 1894) was a Scottish author of juvenile fiction who wrote more than 100 books. He was also an accomplished artist, and exhibited some of his water-colours at the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1848 he published his first book Hudson's Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America, and for some time was employed by the publishers Messrs Constable. In 1856 he gave up business to focus on his literary career, and began the series of adventure stories for the young with which his name is popularly associated. Kirk Munroe (September 15, 1850 - June 16, 1930) was an American writer and conservationist. Born Charles Kirk Munroe in a log cab near Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Munroe was the son of Charles and Susan (Hall) Munroe. His youth was spent on the frontier, after which his family moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he attended school until he was sixteen. He publicly dropped 'Charles' from his name in 1883. In 1876, Kirk Munroe was hired as a reporter for the New York Sun. Three years later he became the first editor of Harper's Young People magazine; he resigned in 1881. From 1879 to 1884, he was the commodore of New York Canoe club. During this time he helped found the League of American Wheelmen with Charles E. Pratt on May 31, 1880. Mardi Gras came and passed, but Ridge, though escorting his sister and cousin to all the festivities, took only a slight interest in them. If he goes at all--which Heaven forbid--it must be as an officer,' interposed Mrs. Norris, who had overheard the question. 'Of course a gentleman would not think of going as anything else,' remarked Dulce, conclusively. George Lewis/Louis Becke (1848-1913) was an Australian short-story writer and novelist. He began his voyages in the south seas at a very early age and there are two accounts of these beginnings: one by the Earl of Pembroke, who presumably obtained his information from Becke, which is prefixed to By Reef and Palm (1894), and the other written by Becke. It is difficult to reconcile them, and all that is certain is that Becke spent many years on vessels trading in the Pacific islands. Becke went to London, and he remained in Europe for about 15 years, during which time a large number of collections of short stories and a few novels and stories for boys were published. He was fairly paid by the magazines for his stories, but he always sold his books outright. About 30 of Becke's books are listed in Miller's Australian Literature with six other volumes written in collaboration with W. J. Jeffery. Among Becke's books are: The Naval Pioneers of Australia (1899), and By Rock and Pool on an Austral Shore and Other Stories (1901). George Lewis Becke (or Louis Becke; 18 June 1855 - 18 February 1913) was an Australian Pacific trader, short story writer and novelist. In January 1892 Becke returned to Sydney and persuaded by Ernest Favenc and J. F. Archibald began to contribute stories to The Bulletin, the first of which was 'Tis in the Blood appearing in the edition of 6 May 1893. A collection of these stories, By Reef and Palm, was published in England in 1894; His Native Wife, a novelette, was published in Australia in 1895; followed by a further collection of stories, The Ebbing of the Tide, which was published in 1896. The book '' Foster's Letter Of Marque A Tale Of Old Sydney - 190 '' has been considered important throughout the human history, and so that this work is never forgotten we have made efforts in its preservation by republishing this book in a modern format for present and future generations. This whole book has been reformatted, retyped and designed. These books are not made of scanned copies and hence the text is clear and readable. This is a biography of Louis Becke, born at Port Macquarie, NSW, 1855, Pacific Island trader and novelist. The Tapu of Branderah by Louis Becke is about the voyage of English and German travelers heading to Mayou in southeast New Guinea. Excerpt: 'As the rising sun had just begun to pierce the misty tropic haze of early dawn, a small, white-painted schooner of ninety or a hundred tons burden was bearing down upon the low, densely-wooded island of Mayou, which lies between the coast of south-east New Guinea and the murderous Solomon Group—the grave of the white man in Melanesia.' Avis A. Burnham Stanwood wrote this popular book that continues to be widely read today despite its age. 'Fostina Woodman, the Wonderful Adventurer' is a novel about a female adventurer named Fostina Woodman. In her youth, Fostina had never experienced much of this world's sorrow; the brightness of her sparkling eye and joyous countenance spoke the true index of the soul within. From her infancy she had been cradled in the home of indulgence, and received every care and attention from Aunt Aubrey, which a fond mother could bestow, and she therefore felt not her loss. Her father, too, had devoted most of his time, since the death of his wife, to the care of her tender offspring. Unfortunately, a sudden and awful calamity again visited the quiet and happy home of the Woodmans, in the cottage of the Mountain Glen. The musical voice of the gentle and loving Fostina was no longer heard to resound over the Mountain. That dreadful malady, the cholera, which has struck such horror and dread upon the inhabitants of our country of late, had long prevailed; sweeping off a great number of its inhabitants. It had found its way into the peaceful cot of Mr. Woodman, and marked three of its happy inmates as victims. The once happy home was now the abode of misery and suffering. Mr. Woodman, his youngest son, and Aunt Aubrey fell victims to the disease which proved fatal in its course. Fostina and her two elder brothers were the only surviving members of the unfortunate family, who were now bereft of their only remaining parent and faithful nurse who had watched over them since the death of their mother. 'Reader, are you a lover of Nature? And do you behold with pleasure the wonderful works of creation, where the hand of Art has made no claims? Then follow me to the quiet and pleasant village of S-, and visit there the Mountain Glen, and you will see one of the loveliest places which Nature ever formed, and which stands unrivalled for its beauty, in this great land of wonders. The books are available in print, as well as ebooks. DigiCat hopes you will treat this work with the acknowledgment and passion it deserves as a classic of world literature. Found in the Philippines is a novel by Brigadier General Charles King, U.S.A. (1899).'Something unusual was going on at division headquarters. The men in the nearest regimental camps, regular and volunteer, were 'lined up' along the sentry posts and silently, eagerly watching and waiting. For a week rumor had been rife that orders for a move were coming and the brigades hailed it with delight. For a month, shivering at night in the dripping, drenching fogs drifting in from the Pacific, or drilling for hours each day on the bleak slopes of the Presidio Heights, they had been praying for something to break the monotony of the routine. They were envious of the comrades who had been shipped to Manila, emulous of those who had stormed Santiago, and would have welcomed with unreasoning enhusiasm any mandate that bore promise of change of scene - or duty.'BIOGen. Charles King was a soldier, military historian and novelist. King's military career began as a teenager when he was a mounted orderly for the Iron Brigade during the Civil War. After an appointment to West Point by Abraham Lincoln, King graduated in 1866 to receive his commission in the U.S. Army. In 1871 he joined the 5th Cavalry in Nebraska, the same unit for which William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody was chief scout. King and Cody became friends and remained so for the rest of their lives. Under the command of Gen. George Crook, the 5th Cavalry was active in the plains warfare before being sent to Arizona Territory. There he fought in battles with various groups of Apaches, sustaining a severe bullet wound which shattered his upper right arm. After the initial recovery from his wound he rejoined the 5th Cavalry in 1875 just in time to travel north to participate in the Great Sioux War. There he led units of the 5th Cavalry in the 1876 fight on Warbonnet Creek, and was thus witness to William Cody's famous duel with the Cheyenne warrior Yellow Hand. Later King also served in the Nez Perce Indian Campaign of 1877 when the army was attempting to find and defeat Chief Joseph. In 1879 he was promoted to Captain, but had to leave active field service because of continuing difficulties with his wound. He then took on an assignment at the University of Wisconsin where he taught military science. Active with Wisconsin's volunteer regiments, he was again commissioned in the Spanish-American War as Brigadier General of Volunteers and was involved in that conflict, and later in the Philippines Insurrection. In 1904 he was made Brigadier General of the Wisconsin National Guard and helped train troops to fight in World War I. He was one of very few military officers to have served

Henry Augustin Beers (1847-1926) was an author, literary historian, poet, and professor at Yale University. The biography of four ingenious American men with great contributions to American literature, politics, culture, music and more. Well written at Henry Beers' point view.An excerpt from Four Americans. And the bittern sound his drum,Booming from the sedgy shallow.See even old Chaucer who knew a thing or two about birds, teste his 'Parlament of Foules,' admirably but strangely edited by Lounsbury, whose indifference to art was only surpassed by his hostility to nature. Says Chaucer:And as a bytoure bumblith in the myre.'My friend canceled his note. It is, of course, now established that the bittern 'booms'-not in the mud-but in the air.Mr. Roosevelt was historian, biographer, essayist, and writer of narrative papers on hunting, outdoor life, and natural history, and in all these departments did solid, important work. His 'Winning of the West' is little, if at all, inferior in historical interest to the similar writings of Parkman and John Fiske. His 'History of the Naval War of 1812' is an astonishing performance for a young man of twentyfour, only two years out of college. For it required a careful sifting of evidence and weighing of authorities. 'Twaddles!' Nora coming into her orderly kitchen was amazed. 'Glory be, child, are you making toast of yourself?' The shoes gave a final wriggle and Twaddles deftly backed out of the oven, turning to show a flushed face and a pair of dark, dancing eyes. 'What are ye doing?' insisted Norah curiously. 'The sponge cake was baked and put away hours ago.' 'Oh, I don't want any of your sponge cake,' Twaddles assured her loftily, forgetting, perhaps, the many times he had hung around the kitchen door during Norah's baking and teased for 'just one bite.' He is viewed as one of the first writers of the Edwardian era; challenging in his works some of the ideals of society depicted in the preceeding literature of Victorian England. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1932. Notable works include The Forsyte Saga (1906-1921) and its sequels, A Modern Comedy and End of the Chapter. From the Four Winds was Galsworthy's first published work in 1897, a collection of short stories. These, and several subsequent works, were published under the pen name John Sinjohn and it would not be until The Island Pharisees (1904) that he would begin publishing under his own name. His first play, The Silver Box (1906) became a success, and he followed it up with The Man of Property (1906), the first in the Forsyte trilogy. '[...] THE RECTOR. Reproduction of the original: Four Young Explorers by Oliver Optic 'Four Young Explorers' from William Taylor Adams. Pseudonym Oliver Optic, was a noted academic and author (1822-1897). 'FOUR YOUNG EXPLORERS' is the third volume of the third series of the 'All-Over-the-World Library.' When the young millionaire and his three companions of about his own age, with a chosen list of near and dear friends, had made the voyage 'Half Round the World,' the volume with this title left them all at Sarawak in the island of Borneo. The four young explorers, as they became, were permitted to spend three weeks there hunting, fishing, and ascending some of the rivers, while the rest of the party proceeded in the Guardian-Mother to Siam. The younger members of the ship's company believed they had seen enough of temples, palaces, and fine gardens in the great cities of the East, and desired to live a wilder life for a brief period. William Taylor Adams (July 30, 1822 - March 27, 1897), pseudonym Oliver Optic, was a noted academic, author, and a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Adams first began to write at the age of 28, and his first book, Hatchie, the Guardian Slave (1853), was published under the pseudonym of Warren T. Ashton. It was only a modest success, but Adams was undaunted. In 1854 Adams produced his first real hit, the initial volume in the Boat Club series. Among his best-known works were the two 'Blue and Gray' series, which were set during the Civil War. Adams wrote well over 100 books in total, most of them for a boy audience, and the majority of these in series of four to six volumes. Oliver Optic was a Massachusetts politician who spent some time as a House member in Congress, but he also wrote a number of works that remain popular among kids of all ages. Four Young Explorers By Oliver Optic Excerpt f discussion to induce the commander, and then the mothers of two of the explorers, to assent to this plan; but the objections were finally overcome by the logic and the eloquence of Louis. The Blanche, the consort of the Guardian-Mother, having on board the owner, known as General Noury, his wife and his father-in-law, had nothing to do with this difficult question; but the general had a steam-launch, which he was kind enough to grant for the use of the explorers. It was a very sunny June day, and a girl was pacing up and down a sheltered path in an oldfashioned garden. She walked slowly along the narrow graveled walk, now and then glancing at the carefully trimmed flowers of an elaborate ribbon border at her right, and stopping for an instant to note the promise of fruit on some well-laden peach and pear-trees. The hot sun was pouring down almost vertical rays on her uncovered head, but she was either impervious to its power, or, like a salamander, she rejoiced in its fierce noonday heat. 'We have a good promise of peaches and pears,' she said to herself; 'I will see that they are sold this year. We will just keep a few for my father to eat, but the rest shall go. It is a pity Watkins spends so much time over the ribbon border; it does not pay, and it uses up so many of our bedding plants.' She frowned slightly as she said these last words, and put up her hand to shade her face from the sun, as though for the first time she noticed its dazzling light and heat. *** The Man from Archangel and Other Tales of Adventure menghadirkan 15 cerita pilihan karya Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Bercerita tentang kehadiran cinta, petualangan masa perang, juga pengalaman sang dokter. -BukuneThis book is available for free download in a number of formats - including epub, pdf, azw, mobi and more. (George William) Gilbert Patten (1866-1945), who also wrote under the pseudonyms Morgan Scott and Burt L. Standish, was the American author of the Frank Merriwell stories. The model for all later American juvenile sports fiction, Merriwell excelled at football, baseball, crew and track at Yale while solving mysteries and righting wrongs. He played with great strength and received traumatic blows without injury. Merriwell originally appeared in a series of magazine stories starting April 18, 1896 (Frank Merriwell: or, First Days at Fardale) in Tip Top Weekly, continuing through 1912, and later in dime novels and comic books. Patten would confine himself to a hotel room for a week to write an entire story. (George William) Gilbert Patten (18661945), who also wrote under the pseudonyms Morgan Scott and Burt L. New York City’s Broadway district is by far the most prestigious and lucrative venue for American performers, playwrights, entertainers and technicians. While there are many reference works and critical studies of selected Broadway plays or musicals and even more works about the highlights of the American theater, this is the first singlevolume book to cover all of the activities on Broadway between 1919 and 2007. More than 14,000 productions are briefly described, including hundreds of plays, musicals, revivals, and specialty programs. Entries include famous and forgotten works, designed to give a complete picture of Broadway’s history and development, its evolution since the early twentieth century, and its rise to unparalleled prominence in the world of American theater. The productions are identified in terms of plot, cast, personnel, critical reaction, and significance in the history of New York theater and culture. In addition to a chronological list of all Broadway productions between 1919 and 2007, the book also includes approximately 600 important productions performed on Broadway before 1919. Richard Halliburton was the quintessential world traveler of the early 20th century. In 1930, his celebrity equaled that of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. Halliburton called himself a 'horizon chaser' and recommended that one should see the world before committing to a routine. Not only did he live up to his ideal, but he was eager to write about his adventures. A prolific partnership with gifted editor and ghost writer Paul Mooney produced excellent work, and theirs became a

Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a 'filler' in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s. Judgment and Sensibility is the second volume of the collected essays of E. Digby Baltzell, one of the keenest observers and analysts of America's upper classes since Thorstein Veblen. Spanning four decades of writing, these essays cover a wide range of topics, including contemporary politics, democratic elitism, Puritanism, Judaism, higher education, urbanization, and the U.S. Supreme Court, among others. Long before sound became an essential part of motion pictures, Westerns were an established genre. The men and women who brought to life cowboys, cowgirls, villains, sidekicks, distressed damsels and outraged townspeople often continued with their film careers, finding success and fame well into the sound era-always knowing that it was in silent Westerns that their careers began. More than a thousand of these once-silent Western players are featured in this fully indexed encyclopedic work. Each entry includes a detailed biography, covering both personal and professional milestones and a complete Western filmography. A foreword is supplied by Diana Serra Cary (formerly the child

Reproduction of the original: Frank Merriwell’s Pursuit by Burt L. Standish Gilbert Patten, writing as Burt L. Standish, made a career of generating serialized twenty-thousand-word stories featuring his fictional creation Frank Merriwell, a student athlete at Yale University who inspired others to emulate his example of manly boyhood. Patten and his publisher, Street and Smith, initially had only a general idea about what would constitute Merriwell’s adventures and who would want to read about them when they introduced the hero in the dime novel Tip Top Weekly in 1896, but over the years what took shape was a story line that capitalized on middle-class fears about the insidious influence of modern life on the nation’s boys. Merriwell came to symbolize the Progressive Era debate about how sport and school made boys into men. The saga featured the attractive Merriwell distinguishing between “good” and “bad” girls and focused on his squeaky-clean adventures in physical development and mentorship. By the serial’s conclusion, Merriwell had opened a school for “weak and wayward boys” that made him into a figure who taught readers how to approximate his example. In Frank Merriwell and the Fiction of All-American Boyhood, Anderson treats Tip Top Weekly as a historical artifact, supplementing his reading of its text, illustrations, reader letters, and advertisements with his use of editorial correspondence, memoirs, trade journals, and legal documents. Anderson blends social and cultural history, with the history of business, gender, and sport, along with a general examination of childhood and youth in this fascinating study of how a fictional character was used to promote a homogeneous “normal” American boyhood rooted in an assumed pecking order of class, race, and gender.
