History of the Scottish National Mod The Gaels: Alive and Kicking The place of friendship The Royal National Mod is Scotland's premier Gaelic festival, held every October at a different location in Scotland. The festival is competition-based celebrating the Gaelic language and culture through music, dance, drama, arts and literature. The Royal National Mòd is organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach (The Highland Association) which was founded in Oban in 1891 and has HM The Queen as its Patron. It is famous for celebrating the Gaelic linguistic and cultural heritage, First held in 1892, the Mod is now the second largest festival in Scotland attracting visitors and competitors from the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and the USA. It provides a major economic and cultural boost to the host area and attracts considerable national and international publicity. Whilst the Mod is a competitive event it also provides the opportunity for Gaels and non-Gaels to gather and renew old friendships and forge new ones. It has evolved organically, responding to changes in the Gaelic world and acting as an incentive for individuals and groups to develop their talents in the public arena.

Over the past century, the Mod has been a significant cohesive element in keeping the Gaelic community together. Since 1912, there has been a Royal association with the Mod whose parent body, An Còmunn Gàidhealach, has HM The Queen as its Patron. Members of the Royal Family regularly attend the festival. Provincial Mods take place throughout Scotland every year between May and September and there's an annual gathering of Gaels at the Mod Vancouver in May and the Mod USA in September. Scotland’s premier Gaelic festival provides opportunities for people of all ages to

The eight-day festival is famous for celebrating Gaelic linguistic and cultural heritage and provides opportunities for people of all ages to perform across a range of competitive disciplines including Gaelic music and song, highland dancing, instrumental, drama, sport and literature.

“Kirtage” are usually celebrated once a year, at the anniversary of a “Kirchweihe”, which is at the same time a feast of the church patron. One of the famous “Kirtage” from Austria is called “Wachauer Marillenkirtag”, which takes place in Lower Austria. This region is popular for their apricots. During the whole weekend you can buy different things made of apricots.

Before it became popular as it is today, the religious thought was the most important thing about it: People met after the end of the mass to buy things from trades at the market place in town. Now “Kirtage” are usually celebrated with carnival rides, ferry wheels, carousels,…. There are also food and drink stands. Music and dances are also typical for “Kirtage”.

May 24 - Bulgarian National Day of Slavonic Literature and Culture As you probably know, Bulgaria is the only country in the European Union that uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Our entry into the EU in 2007 made Cyrillic the third official alphabet in the EU after the Latin and Greek ones. On May 24th we celebrate the Slavonic Literature and Culture, and we also honor the creators of the Cyrillic alphabet – the brothers St. Cyril and St. Methodius. In the 9th century there was something like a competition between the Pope in Rome and the Emperor of Constantinople for influence over the still not Christianized (and mainly Slavonic) peoples in Europe. The Byzantine Emperor and his Patriarch thought it would be a good idea to provide an alphabet to the Slavs in order to eradicate the Western influence. Cyril and Methodius were chosen to go to Great Moravia (parts of today’s Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) with the mission of creating a Slavonic alphabet. The first Slavonic alphabet was the so called Glagolitsa (from “glagol” = word) or Glagolitic alphabet, which was also the first alphabet to be used for Slavonic manuscripts. Bulgarian royal prince Boris asked two of the students of Cyril and Methodius – Kliment and Naum – to introduce the new alphabet to some Bulgarian priests and to teach them to preach in Bulgarian language. However, Kliment soon realized that letters in the Glagolitsa did not correspond to the needs of the Bulgarian language. Thus, he introduced a major reform where a mixture of the Greek script and the Glagolitsa led to the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet.

Harvest Fair was accompanied by different practices and traditions preserved until nowadays. They were mainly related to Harvest Wreath. Harvest Fair have been begining with preparation of Harvest Wreath from cereals left in field, bunches of red rowan, nuts, fruits, flowers and colored ribbons. Harvest wreaths usually had the shape of a large crown or circle. Wreath has been transferred to the church in a solemn procession. wieńcem. Wieniec niesiono do poświęcenia do świątyni w uroczystym pochodzie. W czasie dożynek organizowano biesiady z poczęstunkiem i tańcami,.

metrycznych. A zatem, poprzez te elementy matematyczne, odnaleźliśmy też sztukę w naszej tradycji..

Nowadays Harvest Fair is usually celebrated in rural areas one Sunday in September after the harvest. As Kraczkowa is located in rural areas such traditions are still cultivated here. This year, with participation in the project, we have been looking for maths in this tradition. And we have found lots of things connected with maths: our Kindergarten Harvest Wreath was based on circle, symmetric patterns have been used for decorations. Other harvest wreaths were based on geometric figures. So, through these maths elements we have found art of our tradition.

In our school we enjoy learning about Scotland and the Scottish language through dance and song.

Let’s be artists in mathematics 2012-2014

In January we celebrate the birth of our national bard, Robert Burns. Each year we have a poetry competition. We have to learn a Scottish poem and song and then perform it in front of the judges. The older children create a fact file about the life of Robert Burns.

We have many celebrations across the year related to Scotland. On the 30th November each year we have special activities to remember St Andrew who is the patron saint of Scotland. We read stories and watch the older children tell us about why St Andrew is important to Scotland. The Saltire Cross became the heraldic arms that every Scot is entitled to fly and wear. However, its colour was not white at first but silver (Argent), as in heraldry white stands for silver.

In October we find out more about our Scottish language- Gaelic. Miss Cotter teaches us some Gaelic songs and we learn about traditional Scottish dances.

A main subject in fourth grade is calculation of areas. So we thought about to comparing maths and arts. I brought a picture frame with a screen in the measure of 1 m². The next smaller square measure in Austria is dm² but this square measure is not relevant in all countries. The next task for the student was to find yellow and red things in their flat.

They were very creative an brought many different things like noodles, wool, red pepper corns, cleaning cloths, sponges, papers, plastic bags, balloons, …….. We cut out square decimeters in yellow and red and tried out how many we need to fill the square meter. The correct answer was 100. Now

we

painted

the

screen red. Each student decorated his own dm² and every dm² had to be different from the others.

Than we decided that 50 dm² are enough so that in every row there are five decorated dm² and five dm² of empty space.

24th of May is a Day that has no analogue among the other nations - the Day of literature, enlightenment, culture. It’s a holiday of spiritual rising, perfection striving for scientific and cultural achievements. The letters created by Cyril and Methodius , their translations of the liturgical books, their fight to protect the rights of all nations to do honor of God in their own languages have a historical significance to Bulgarian national developing and its prosperity. Their life work is human, democratic. It becomes part of the general human idea for equality at the spiritual field.

Pupils of 4C and 5C of Tolosano Primary School meet Mr Valerio Testa, historic memory of the Rione Giallo. He gives them important information about the technical features of the Palio. The circuit is 150 meters long. Starting from the same point of the field, the contenders race in opposite directions. Out of curiosity: who rides rightwards is advantaged thanks to centrifugal force! It takes about 12 “ to reach the target, the horse speed is of 50Km/h. The spears held by the knights are 2,75 metres long and their weight is of 3,25 kilos. Because of the weight women have never taken part into the competition. The target is rather small, with a diameter of 8 cm. Each Rione runs 8 races. The Niballo is located in the middle of the track, holding two targets at the end of each arm. The first rider who hits the target with the tip of the spear wins the round; each target hit wins a shield bearing the colours of the defeated Rione. The shield is put on the board above the tribune. At the end of the 20 rounds the Rione conquering the highest number of shields wins the Palio. The Palio is a wonderful hand embroidered piece of cloth.

On 15 of August, during the time of official celebrations in Kraczkowa, small group of children from our Kindergarten, wearing Polish traditional costumes, have been carrying Harvest Wreath during procession. This year it was the first time for our Kindergarten when we have made our Wreath.

Chociaż musieliśmy przerwać nasze wakacje I wrócić do domu wcześniej” (Patrycja, 7 lat).

Both children and their parents were so excited. Although it was during our holidays all h a ve pa r ti ci pa t ed proudly as representatives of the whole Kindergarten. “I was so happy when my Mom told me that Mrs. Jola has phoned and asked me to come. Although we had to break our holidays and come back home earlier” (Patrycja, 7 years). There were as usuall lots of Harvest Wreath prepared by others, and among them our beautiful, fantastic Harvest Wreath. “We can think optimistically about our future when we look at these children who are present here” (our priest during mass in Church).

In Mid Calder primary all teachers plan activities for the children to find out about their Scottish heritage. Across the school year children will find out about their local area. The village of Mid Calder has a very interesting history and there has been a settlement their since the 11th century. The Scottish word for a church is Kirk and so the local church is called the Kirk of Calder. The children find out about their Scottish heritage in a variety of ways. We have visitors to the school who come and talk to there children about the local area. The minister of the Kirk is very knowledgeable and is very keen to share his knowledge with the children. Lord and Lady Torphichen who live in Calder House are also keen to share the history of the local area. The children also learn some traditional Scottish country dancing. These pictures show the children learning a dance called the Waterdown Reel. Traditional Scottish parties are called ceilidhs. At these parties men wear tradition Scottish dress and There

We spent lots of time to fill our square meter the students were eager to work on it. In addition to the big frame we made little canvas with 1 dm² and filled it with little squares that measure a length of 2,5 cm which is an Inch. This measure (inch) is not relevant in Austria but now we know it. In the manual training the students made little easels for the smaller frames. These easels and frames will be the gift for the Comenius guests who are going to visit at the end of April.

At the end of this project my class had a better feeling for areas and square measures. They are better in estimate areas in their environment.

In 1824 was published the first secular textbook

,,Primer

with

instructions” collected by Peter Beron, widely known as the ,,Fish primer". Children from “Little Bees” group are biggest at the kindergarten. They do not learn how to read or write at kindergarten, but they have a knowledge of Bulgarian alphabet and letters. They created one “Primer in illustrations “. The children created special collages as an example, in order to get you familiarized with the 30 letters of the Bulgarian alphabet.

We have focused our attention to the “Palio” as an instrument to know and study our town from an artistic, historical and cultural point of view. It has been a means to make proposals for new activities of research, a way of discovering what is “new” and the tradition values. Therefore, we have encouraged the involvement of children in the Palio, so that they have enriched their knowledge and skills in the Art and Maths fields. This way, our work becomes propaedeutics to the approach to the symbol and to the number, allowing us to find the correct relationships between numbers and quantities.

At the beginning of the school year, which always takes place in the second week of September, all of us teachers considered interesting to have the “working drive” to the popular feast of the Gigli. This feast takes place on the last Sunday of September, so all teaching activities, from mathematics to Italian, from music to art, from history to geography ... had as background argumentative this event. The children did calculations to realize the structure of Giglio, took measurements using rulers, they were wrong and fixed errors by yourself, with the active method of teaching, and they read, researched the history of the Gigli by ancient pagan cults up to the nowadays. They designed, planned together and shared with all the joy that comes from this event.

The work of our teachers has attenzionato the experiences of children in the environment by offering opportunities for reflection by symbolic cultural systems. Making of our Harvest Wreath It was the first Harvest Wreath of our Kindergarten. Our teachers have prepared metal structure based on round base. Then it was necessary to colect various cereals. Although we live in village it was not so easy as there are fewer and fewer active farmers here, so close to Rzeszow. Then children, in traditional costumes, have helped in process of making of our Harvest Wreath. They had to choose right species of cereals and not to mix them in the Wreath. They also had to distribute ears of cereals evenly. Then they have helped in decoration of the Wreath with dried flowers that had to be mounted symmetrically. Finally our Harvest Wreath is ready for Harvest Fair!!!

Musiały również dbać, by rozmieszczać kłosy zbóż równomiernie.

Order! Order! Puzzle Write out the numbers from 1 to 20 in words: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Now put them in ALPHABETICAL order. Which number stays where it is?

Sticker-bility Puzzle The addition sum below is a puzzle I've been trying to solve. The idea is that each type of sticker stands for a different number, but that this number is the same wherever that sticker occurs.

So far I've got it to the picture shown in the second diagram. Can you finish it off for me?
