Ubuntu Buffet tantalises the tastebuds VANDERBIJLPAEK. - Following the launch of its new restaurant Ubuntu Buffet, Emerald Resort & Casino is revealing more about the tantalising dining adventure on offer. It’s unique in every sense and caters to a variety of tastes from stir-fry to potjiekos and frozen yoghurt to hot puddings.They welcome corporate guests, families and everyone else in between. Tanuja Gangabishun, marketing executive at Emerald Resort & Casino says: “Ubuntu Buffet presents visitors with a unique food perspective and features that include bottomless beverage fountains, private dining areas, live cooking stations and an overall impressive buffet menu selection.” Chef Ethel Pretorius returns home to Vanderbijlpark to take up the reigns as Ubuntu’s Head Chef. She received her qualifications in Professional Cookery before honing her skills at various establishments around the country. “It is the variety that makes this restaurant so unique,” says Tanuja. “Besides the conventional starters, carveries, bread stations and grill options, many bonus food stations have been included. These offer potjiekos, shwarmas, stirfry and afval stations, to mention a few. Dessert stations with waffles and pancakes, frozen yoghurt, ice cream, hot puddings and assorted cakes, tarts, cupcakes and mini desserts sections complete the meal.” Ubuntu Buffet is able to accommodate up to 250 people, making this the venue ideally suited for corporate and year-end functions. In keeping with the ethos of being a complete entertainment destination, the restaurant includes a dedicated kiddies play area and a separate bar lounge to cater for the over 18s. “As we head into the festive season, adventure awaits our guests and their families! Pizzaz boasts best senior dancers in the Vaal bled,” says head teacher and owner Tamlyn McCabe. This was not the first achievement for Pizazz in 2015. At the Battle of the Giants held at Sun City in April their formation group ‘Teen Drinking’ and small group ‘Out Da Box’ came home with gold for the second year running. The 16 and over small group ‘Swagg’ won the silver medal in their section, and with the solos and duos also placing in the top three in most of the sections, every dancer came home with at least one medal. ‘Teen Drinking’ also came out tops at the Gauteng National Hip Hop Competition in July, as well as the senior formation group ‘Addiction.’ Pizazz boasts three gold medals, three silver and one bronze for the seven groups entered in this competition, which hosted over 1 000 dancers over the weekend.

At the recent South African Dance Schools Championships held at the Etienne Rousseau Theatre in Sasolburg, Pizazz Dance and Pilates Studio won the award for Best Senior Studio in the Vaal. All of the 11 groups they entered were invited to participate in the showcase held at the end of the competition. Three of those groups then went on to win awards as runners up in the best dance category. One in the junior division and two in the senior. Pizazz also received 15 special judges recognition awards and three personal trophies for Hannah Noton (Best overall 4-5 years), Elvis Mosia (Runner up Best overall male) and Talita Bezuidenhout (Best Hip Hop 1011 years). “It was a huge honour to be part of this competition and then to win such a prestigious award, we are deeply grateful and hum-

The roar of an African lion is probably one of the most powerful and breathtaking sounds in the world. Take care of your animals this festive season VEREENIGING. - The festive season is around the corner. Those planning a get-away holiday need to think about their pets as well. Make sure that they are okay to stay at home. If you are not sure, why not consider boarding your animals while you are on holiday? That way you will have a clear conscience and know they are safe and taken care of. The SPCA Vereeniging & Vanderbijlpark’s boarding kennels are open for bookings and the cost per day is R80 per dog and R60 per cat. The SPCA asks that you make your bookings in advance as they have limited space available. The following will be taken into consideration when you want to board your dogs and/or cats: Please remember the following: • No dog or cat will be accepted for boarding unless they are fully vaccinated and proof of this is produced. • You need to bring something that smells of home when you check your animals in. The SPCA provides all the bedding and food but the dogs and cats settle down if they have something that reminds them of home in their kennel. We prefer an old blanket or a jersey. You also need to mark it so it won’t get lost. • If you are bringing your own food please do not get upset if they give you most of your food back when you collect your animals. “People get so upset because they think we did not feed the animals but in truth some animals just stop eating and then we employ a few methods of our own to get them to eat. “We provide them with alternatives and watch them closely to see that they do finally succumb to the food. It is not in our best interest to send a thin animal home or even have one starve in our kennels. Sometimes we even go so far as to provide a home cooked meal - in the end they all do eat,” says Marlien Pieterse, manager of the Vereeniging/Vanderbijlpark SPCA • If you book for a certain period you will pay for that entire period in advance. If you decide to collect your animal earlier than agreed they do not refund any money as they could have given that kennel to another booking if the arrangements were made in advance. “Please understand you pay per day at the kennels and even if you fetch early morning you will still pay for that day. Our rates are very reasonable and boarding provides us with an income to support all the other animals in our care. Don’t begrudge us that money.” • You also need to provide the SPCA with alternative contact numbers in case of emergency and your veterinarian’s details. SASOLBURG. – Die eerste Charity Rally is onlangs by die DP de Villiers-stadion gehou. Talle nie-winsgewende organisasies, waaronder Round Table Sasolburg 41, SANCA, Rotary en Purrpaws for Life het saam met uitstallers soos Kia, Vaal Toyta Sasolburg en ander privaat uitstallers, wat van soethappies tot spitbraai, handsakke en plante uitgestal het, die velde by die stadion toegestaan, gereed om mense meer van hulle organisasies te vertel of om hul produkte te verkoop. Daar was ook massiewe speelplek en klim-en-klouters vir die jongspan en lekker lewendige musiek op die verhoog. Daar was wel nie soveel mense soos aanvanklik gehoop is nie, maar die dag was steeds ‘n sukses en diegene wat wel daar was, het dit sommer baie geniet.

Sarah secures Miss SA finalist spot The 12 Miss South Africa finalists – who will be doing battle to be crowned Miss South Africa 2016 – have been announced and Sarah Botes of Vanderbijlpark is in the running. The Miss South Africa pageant, presented by Sun International in collaboration with Cell C, takes place at Carnival City on Saturday, March 19 next year. The top 12 come from around the country: Gauteng has five finalists; Mpumalanga and the Eastern and Western Cape all have two entrants while the Free State has one contestant. They are: Elizabeth Molapo (Bloemfontein, Free State); Felicia Muwayi (Nelspruit, Mpumalanga); Luyolo Mngonyama (Umtata, Eastern Cape); Marciel Hopkins (Paarl, Western Cape); Mikaela Oosthuizen (Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape); Ntandoyenkosi Kunene (Mkhondo, Mpumalanga); Reabetswe Sechoaro (Pretoria East, Gauteng); Ronette Chambers (Cape Town, Western Cape); Sarah Botes (Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng); Schané Venter (Alberton, Gauteng); Sharon-Rose Khumalo (Pretoria, Gauteng) and Tayla Skye Robinson (Roodepoort, Gauteng). Laurie and Mthimunye revealed the outfits and national costumes they will be wearing at the two prestigious events – Laurie’s designed by Casper Bosman and Mthimunye’s by Anel Botha. Liesl Laurie gave advice to the Top 12 finalists, one of whom will be succeeding her next year as Miss South Africa: “Being a part of the journey to Miss South Africa is an experience designed to grow and prepare you for the rest of your life. This the most important job interview of your life. However, it is not
all about winning; you will still be richer thanks to the experience. Enjoy every second of this magical journey and always be kind to everyone around you. Remember that no beauty shines brighter than that of a beautiful heart!” Mthimunye’s also had words of wisdom: “If you know what you are about and you are clear about what you want to achieve, focus on that while being the best you can be. Being selected as part of the 2016 Top 12 is already a great achievement; if you remember this, the journey will be an incredible one.” The 2016 Miss South Africa pageant takes place at Carnival City on Saturday, March 19. Celebrate this festive season with safety in mind VANDERBILPARK. - The long-awaited holiday is almost here and whatever your intentions, be it going away on holiday, visiting local attractions or staying at home, ER24 is urging everyone to celebrate with safety in mind. If you are driving to your destination, remember the following to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy. Ensure you have a spare wheel, first aid kit and fire extinguisher in the vehicle. Plan your route. It is a good idea to take note of all filling stations, police stations and hospitals. Carry a torch, fire extinguisher and reflective bib in case you encounter problems with your vehicle. Keep a list of telephone numbers of people to contact as well as your medical details and history (medical aid number, blood group and allergies for example). Let people you trust know where you are going and when they can expect you back. Buckle up and ensure children in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. If you are travelling with pets make sure they are restrained. Do not drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Ensure you are well rested before your journey. Take regular breaks. If there is another person in the vehicle who is licensed to drive, rather share the driving. Refrain from road rage. Be alert at all times and do not speed. Alter your speed according to the environment you are in. Matriculants and other youngsters celebrating are urged to do so responsibly. Motor vehicle collisions and drowning incidents involving youngsters are common at this time of year. Contributing factors include reckless driving and the abuse of drugs and alcohol. You could be stepping on loose stones or boulders or venture too close to the edge of a cliff. If there are children with you, ensure you know where they are at all times. This should be something you ensure at all times. If you plan to have a braai while away on holiday, ensure you are allowed to do so at the location you have chosen. If you are allowed to, be careful. When having a braai at home or while away on holiday, keep a fire extinguisher close by. The braai stand should not be placed in or close to the only escape. The braai stand should be sturdy. Never abandon the fire. Do not start fires close to dry brush and grass. Children should be a safe distance away from the braai area. Teach them about the dangers of playing with matches and lighters. Remember that anyone is at risk of drowning. Never allow children to swim without adult supervision. Keep your pool covered with an approved cover when not in use. Do not swim too far out into the ocean. You may struggle due to fatigue or get swept further away due to strong currents. Wearing a life jacket is vital. Only swim in designated areas that are supervised by lifeguards. Never swim alone. Never dive or jump into unfamiliar or shallow water. Remember that by learning CPR, you can help save a life. It is never too early or late to learn. If you are at the beach and you see a per-
son struggling in the water, inform a lifeguard immediately. Ensure you wear a life jacket if you decide to help the person yourself. If you remove the person from the water, initiate CPR if there is no pulse and breathing. Do not stop CPR unless the person starts to breathe on their own. Call for an ambulance as soon as you are able to or get someone to do so. Do not put the person in your vehicle and drive to a hospital. You may be involved in a collision or the patient may suffer brain damage. In case of a near drowning, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Explain to medical staff what has happened. There are instances where secondary drowning occurs. The person may seem okay even though they have taken in water that finds its way to the lungs. If you are going to be away from home, remember to cancel newspaper deliveries and have a friend or family member remove letters or pamphlets that may be put in your post box, at your fence or gate. It is a great idea to have a security system
installed if you do not have one. If you do have a security system, ensure that your alarm, electrical fence, beams, cameras or any other security measures that you have in place, are working. When leaving home, ensure that windows are closed and that doors, garages and burglar gates are locked. If you are going all out with Christmas trees, lights or other decorations, avoid overloading electrical outlets. Ensure potentially dangerous items, such as those that

Road block with a difference MEYERTON. - Usually when you get pulled over during a roadblock you silently pray that no fine is coming your way. With the annual Road Block with a Difference motorists can be assured that anything but a fine is underway. The Community Police of Sector 2, Walkers Fruit Farms, Walkerville, Aloe Ridge and Apple Orchards, along with the Meyerton SAPS, Midvaal Traffic Department and Midvaal Councillors, held this roadblock at the Walkerville 4-way stop street on November 21. Instead of handing out fines to passing motorists, it was sweets and toys for the lucky ones who were pulled over. “The road block is arranged annually as a community event, for a bit of fun and laughter, and is always a huge success,” Aaliyah Dangor, spokesperson of Midvaal Local Municipality, said. Midvaal’s executive mayor, Councillor Bongani Baloyi, along with his Mayoral Committee Members Rob Jones and Dennis Ryder, added to the traffic stop as motorists stopped to have a chat with them. The team that arranged the event estimated that 300 to 400 cars went through the roadblock.

Die Driebandstrandkiewiet/ Three-banded Plover (Charadrius tricollaris) is een van elf spesies van hierdie voëlfamilie wat in Suid- Afrika aangetref word en een van twee wat oor die hele Suid-Afrika voorkom. Op die foto kan gesien word hoe hierdie mooi, klein, fyn voëltjie lyk wat maar 18cm groot is en ’n skamele 35g weeg. Die mannetjie en die wyfie lyk eenders. Hul belangrikste kenmerk, soos hulle naam aandui, is die drie bande om die bors - twee swart bande, geskei deur ’n wit band tussenin. Die wit band om die kop is ook ’n uitstaande kenmerk. Ons het aan die einde van Augustus 2014 die voorreg gehad om ʼn jong gevlekte ooruiltjie in ons tuin te “ontdek”. Die jong uil het ons besig gehou vir om en by drie weke en ons het opgemerk dat die ouerpaar die kleintjie ondersteun en voed, en dit is veilig deur die ouers grootgemaak. Die uilpaar het gedurende ʼn vreeslike windstorm in September 2014 weggeraak en ons was baie bekommerd oor hulle lot. Sowat vier maande later het ons bure laat weet dat die uilpaar in hul tuin opgemerk is en dat hulle springlewendig en gesond is. Op Vrydag 20 November vanjaar het dieselfde uilpaar se nuwe uilkind weer ʼn pad deur ons harte kom loop. Die mamma uil het op ons stoep kom sit en daarna in die pekanneut boom gaan skuil. Na die vreeslike wind, hael en reën daardie nag ontdek ons buurvrou reg oorkant ons die volgende middag laat ʼn jong baba uil in die droë watervoor voor haar huis. Sy roep ons en toe ons die uiltjie optel kon ons sien dat dit vreeslik verward en swak is. Nadat ons dit mooi bekyk en oorweeg
het besluit ons om liewer met René Jordaan, die rehabiliteerder van voëls en ander diere in die Parys-omgewing te skakel en raad te vra. Op haar aanbeveling laat ons die uiltjie na haar gaan omdat dit moeilik sou wees vir die uilpaar om die verswakte uiltjie te versorg. By navraag oor hoe die vondeling vorder sê René dat die uiltjie eet en dat daar nou vier uiltjies van dieselfde ouderdom bymekaar is. Hul kans op oorlewing is goed. Ons sit nou met ʼn treurende uilpaar, maar volgens ons voëlboeke is die kanse goed dat hulle dalk nog in die seisoen weer sal probeer vir ’n uilkind. Andersins wag ons maar tot volgende jaar. Omdat ons daagliks verneem van wanpraktyke rakende ons dierelewe, doen ons ’n beroep op mense om dit by die betrokke instansies aan te meld. Ons moet ons erfenis bewaar en beskerm! March against poor service delivery VANDERBIJLPARK. - The DA is organising a protest march against poor service delivery with special emphasis on water leaks, potholes and non-working street lights. The DA will then hand over a memorandum regarding bad service delivery to the top management at Emfuleni Local Municipality. Special emphasis will be placed on water leaks.
