2015 2016
Extraordinary Performances from Around the Globe
WELCOME
to the 2015-2016 Season Performance brings us together, changes the way we think about the world and opens our lives to experiences beyond our own. This season features 27 leading artists and ensembles from 16 countries including Brazil, Cuba, Senegal, Russia, Denmark, China, India, Spain and Japan, with three premieres and a commission. Some of the artists this year will be well-known to you—including Yo-Yo Ma returning to Meany Hall for the first time in 30 years for a solo performance. Others will offer an entirely new experience—nine of this season’s artists are making their Seattle debuts, including Cuban dance company MalPaso, pianists Yulianna Avdeeva and Igor Levit, and globalFEST, featuring musicians from Brazil, Haiti and Jamaica. We also pay tribute to the legacy of Trisha Brown, a major figure in modern dance—and native of Washington State. The Trisha Brown Dance Company will offer its final proscenium performances here at Meany Hall as part of a month-long celebration of her work. We are honored to present these remarkable artists, and look forward to sharing in a season of adventure and discovery with you. Sincerely,

Make a Difference In the coming season, as many as 8,400 K-12 students will come to Meany Hall as part of our free student matinee program. With priority given to students from low-income or underserved schools, our matinees raise the curtain for students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a traditional live performance. This season, Sō Percussion, MalPaso Dance Company and Martha Graham Dance Company are just three of the artists that will be featured on the student matinee series. If the students can’t come to us, we take the artists to them. Every year, an average of 2,000 K-12 students—the majority at schools that have limited arts education—have opportunities to learn from the masters when we bring visiting artists from all over the world for in-school residencies that can last from a day to a week. Every year, we collaborate with campus and community partners to present free community concerts, lectures, workshops, master classes and more across the city in libraries, community centers, dorms and parks. Martha Redbone American roots singer/songwriter Martha Redbone will be here for one week of in-school interactive performances with K-12 students in the Seattle Public Schools, and outreach activities on the UW Campus. Of Cherokee, Choctaw, European and African-American descent, Ms. Redbone brings a wealth of cultural and musical traditions that speak to the Northwest’s own multicultural background.
