Stay Connected! The Class of 2016 TMBA and LMBA classes kicked off their first year at the high ropes course at Cottage Lake. This team building exercise started their 3-day offsite leadership course that continued on Bainbridge Island at IslandWood. Students met their cohorts and began their journeys to achieving their MBA degrees!

A letter from the Manager Life is like that. We make careful plans, expecting one sort of payoff and then Bam! The Nintex™ Leadership Breakfast Series assembles influential business leaders in the Puget Sound region to share their lessons in leadership with MBA students. Students learn from the actual experiences of visionary leaders such as Brett Campbell, Co-founder and Global Vice President of Alliances of the Nintex Group, Mark Mader, CEO of SmartSheet and Phyllis Campbell, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, Pacific Northwest.

Beta Gamma Sigma at UWB Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) is the honor society serving business programs at schools accredited by the AACSB International. BGS is the highest honor a business student anywhere in the world can receive. Membership in the honor society is by invitation only to the top 20% of graduate students. The Board of Governors and Officers of BGS named UWB’s chapter a 2014 Exemplary Chapter. Congratulations to the UW Bothell School of Business for this achievement!
Trailblazers: The Women of the Boeing Company “Trailblazers: The Women of The Boeing Company” author Betsy Case presented her book at the October 17th event presented by the UW Bothell Women in Business and the MBA Association. The book covers the history of women at Boeing, from the first seamstress hired to stitch linen wings in 1961 to the Rosie the Riveters of the 1940s, to the engineers and pilots of today. Betsy, along with present-day Trailblazers Sandra Jeffcoat and Nelda Lee inspired the audience of women and men during an interactive panel discussion. Sandra Jeffcoat was the first African American woman to become a member of the Boeing Technical Excellence Program, and engineer Nelda Lee was the first woman to fly the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle Fighter Jet. The author and panelists signed books after the event.

What’s up with the MBA Association? Earlier this month, the MBAA hosted a welcome event for students to participate in a Scavenger Hunt around the Fremont Area. This was an opportunity to meet and greet students from the other cohorts. Mentoring sessions were provided by 2nd year students at a local Starbucks where they had a session with the 1st year students on how to manage and begin their overwhelming first year. It was a great opportunity to layout study schedules and tactics and learn from the 2nd year students who have experienced the same situation. The MBAA plans to host more of these mentoring sessions and are working towards expanding and bringing larger industries to give 1st and 2nd year students advice. The MBAA also held a family-friendly event with our philanthropy partner, AHOPE For Children. Jennifer Olsen, MBA Class of 2005, is the president of the international organization focused on assistance programs for vulnerable children in Ethiopia. Attendees experienced a fun environment to network, meet with alumni, and learn about ways to participate in international philanthropy. The students were challenged to raise money, with the proceeds benefitting the organization. AHOPE For Children may extend an internship opportunity to students to go to Africa and work on the projects in real time.

Congratulations! Sara Hyer LMBA Class of 2014
Sara has taken on a position at Amazon as an Employment Brand Specialist. She will be working for the WW Operations and Customer Service, developing their employment brand strategy for their global operations network and executing various marketing channels. She loves what she is doing and loves working for the company. She is grateful for her experience learned as an LMBA at UW Bothell! Congrats Sara!
Winarto LMBA Class of 2016 Winarto, a current LMBA student has taken on a position with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) as an Aerospace Engineer (Systems). Winarto will provide government oversight (second set of eyes) within the aerospace industry. His department focuses on new design and modifications. He also works to ensure continuous operational safety within the air. Winarto’s area of responsibility in the office are flight controls and various mechanical systems. Along with this, he also still advises the Air Force and various agencies in political and other issues. Congrats Winarto!

Flint Jamison TMBA Class of 2014 Flint is packing up and moving to Colorado to take on a new challenge! He will be joining Ability Composites, a nine person company that builds composite parts (carbon fiber or fiberglass) for aerospace, industrial (robotics, oil and gas, etc.) and biomedical (prosthetics). Flint will be taking on the role of Chief Operating Officer and also playing the roles of Engineering Manager, Production Designer and Shop Foreman. His goal is to help build the business in any way he can! Good luck, Flint!

Technological innovation is at the heart of the modern economic structure. Technologies are changing every aspect of the corporation- functions, products, processes, roles, strategies, and structures. Understanding the intersection of innovation and entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship is crucial. Simply being a super-engineer is insufficient. What is needed is a holistic technology management perspective. Engineers and scientists need to learn to work in crossfunctional global teams. Communication is central to a technology manager’s success.
Leadership is a central challenge in today’s corporation. Leadership matters in every functional area and every career stage. Leaders come from diverse backgrounds- young and old, men and women, all ethnicities and cultural heritages. There is no one formula for leadership. What is important is that you develop and practice a clear, coherent and thoughtful leadership philosophy. Communicating effectively across different cultures is vital. Mentoring and being mentored are vital leadership elements.
