2013 Baseball Media Guide

About UVa-Wise The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, formerly Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia, is the only four-year, state-supported college in far Southwest Virginia and the only branch of the University of Virginia. Situated on 396 acres in Wise County, Virginia, UVa-Wise is an incredible example of the determination and perseverance of the Southwest Virginia region. Before the college was created, there were no public colleges in Virginia west of Radford. Higher education was simply out of reach for most residents of Virginia’s mountains. When local residents made their case to the University of Virginia for establishing a college in Wise, the Commonwealth of Virginia supported the cause by offering $5,000 to open, staff, and operate the two-year school for one year. Another $5,000 was appropriated for the second year, if there was to be a second year. Local citizens donated over $6,000 to furnish and equip the classrooms. Wise County donated property and two sandstone buildings, remnants of the county poor farm, to house the first classes. All of this happened in the winter of 1954. In September of that same year, Clinch Valley College opened its doors to 100 freshmen. The first classes of graduates went on to become some of the region’s most successful professionals. As more graduates of the two-year college expressed their preference to stay closer to home to complete their baccalaureate degrees, the college began the process to become a senior institution. The college first granted Bachelor of Arts degrees in June 1970. Bachelor of science degrees were first awarded in 1973. Bachelor of science in Nursing degrees were first awarded in 1996. Approximately 8,100 students have received baccalaureates in one or more of the college’s academic disciplines. The small college once nicknamed “Poor Farm University” is now a vibrant senior institution. Perhaps the most significant event in the college’s recent history is its adoption of a new name. After extensive research and consultation with the college’s many constituencies, the college’s governing board decided a name change was needed to more accurately reflect the institution’s association with the University of Virginia. On July 1, 1999, following passage of legislation by the Virginia General Assembly, Clinch Valley College became The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. In recent years, UVa-Wise has broadened its outreach. In 1998, the College forged a sister institution agreement with Istanbul University, Turkey’s oldest and largest institution of higher learning. An agreement was reached with Dumlupinar University in Kutahya, Turkey in 1999. Cooperative programs beneficial to the students and faculty of the institutions will be developed, including mutual exchanges. A third sister institution agreement with the University of Seville in Spain was signed in December 2000.

Athletic Administration Donna Price Henry, Chancellor Donna Price Henry is the eighth chancellor of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Henry, a biologist with extensive and varied experience in the classroom and in higher education leadership roles, succeeds David J. Prior, who died unexpectedly in February after serving seven years as Wise chancellor. She began her tenure on Jan. 18, 2013. Prior to beginning her work at UVa-Wise, Henry spent 16 years in a variety of positions at Florida Gulf Coast University. Her experience includes serving as a founding faculty member at FGCU, as elected Faculty Senate president and as a member of the University Board of Trustees for a two-year period. Since 2005, she has served as dean of the FGCU College of Arts and Sciences. Henry, 52, is married to Allen Henry, a pilot for Federal Express. The Henrys have twin, 13-year old daughters, Jessica and Margaret.

Danny Sterling, Athletic Director Danny Sterling is in his fourth year as UVa-Wise’s Athletic Director. In Sterling’s first three years, the athletic program has undergone dramatic change and improvement. A year ago, the David J. Prior Convocation Center officially opened its doors while new field turf was installed at Carl Smith Stadium. Most recently, the school was granted candidacy into year one of the NCAA Division II process, starting a three year process of transitioning Cavalier Athletics from NAIA Division I status to NCAA Division II status. During his first year, Sterling saw the UVa-Wise men’s basketball team win the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament and advance to the national tournament in Point Lookout, Missouri. The championship marked the second time in school history that the Cavs’ advanced to the national tournament. Brought in to continue the growth of the Cavalier athletic department, Sterling is a familiar face at UVa-Wise. Previously, Sterling served as a trainer for the Cavalier athletic program from 1995-2006 and as the assistant athletic director from 2004-2006. Following his first stint at UVa-Wise, Sterling accepted the head athletic trainer position at Longwood. At Longwood, Sterling was continually promoted through the ranks, eventually taking over the associate athletic director for internal operations position. As an athletic administrator, Sterling aided the Lancer’s in the NCAA Division I certification and reclassification process. As an administrator, he has also supervised ticket sales, marketing, athletic training, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, field hockey, and the strength and conditioning program. Returning to the area brings added joy for the Sterling family, as Danny and his wife are both from the area. Danny is a native of Pound, Virginia and his wife, Kim, a UVa-Wise graduate herself, is from Norton, Virginia. “We are excited to return home,” said Sterling shortly after his hire. “I grew up in Pound, my wife Kim grew up in Norton, and we look forward to raising our daughter Marley in the area.” Sterling left the area initially to attend Virginia Tech, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education in 1994. He later went on to receive his master of science degree in health and physical education (motor behavior/sports studies) in 1997 also from Virginia Tech.

Athletic Administration Kendall Rainey, Senior Woman Adminstrator Following a three year stint as the head volleyball coach, Kendall Rainey recently assumed the position of Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Student-Athlete Success/Senior Women’s Administrator. The former two-sport UVa-Wise standout will oversee student-athlete success both academically and in career building. In addition, Rainey will oversee the athletic department’s involvement in the community and the college’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. A two time Academic All-American, Rainey obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UVa-Wise in 2005 before adding a master’s degree in sport studies with a concentration in sport management from the University of Tennessee in 2007. Currently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in sport studies with a concentration in sport sociology from the University of Tennessee. Rainey resides in Wise, Virginia.

Thomas Nyman, Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance for the Highland Cavaliers Athletic Department Thomas Nyman is the first ever assistant director of athletics for compliance for the Highland Cavaliers Athletic Department. Nyman is charged with developing, implementing and overseeing the school’s comprehensive NCAA Division II Compliance program. Nyman comes to the college after serving as the director of compliance at fellow Division II institution Merrimack College in Massachusetts for the last year and a half. While at Merrimack, Nyman successfully led the athletics department through an NCAA Institutional Self Study while also leading the department through a comprehensive compliance review of the college’s NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey program. During his time at Merrimack, he provided leadership to the department and spearheaded numerous new compliance initiatives as well. Over his career, Nyman spent time at fellow NCAA Division II Institution Missouri Southern State University and NCAA Division I Institution Drake University, where he worked in each institution’s compliance department. Nyman accepted the position at UVa-Wise initially because he was eager to work with seasoned UVa- Wise Athletic Director Danny Sterling as well as to take on the challenge and the excitement that comes with transitioning an institution into NCAA Division II as well as building the Compliance Department from the ground up. Tom has embraced the athletics department’s welcoming and warm climate as well as the southern hospitality that Virginian’s carry. Nyman earned his bachelor of science degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and he later obtained a master’s degree in education in sport management from the University of Minnesota.

Hank Banner will enter the 2013 season coming off another solid season. The 17th year head coach led the Cavaliers to the semifinals of the 2012 Mid-South Tournament a year after he led the team to the 2011 Mid-South Eastern Division crown, in the school’s inaugural Mid-South campaign. His 300th win came two seasons ago when UVa-Wise defeated Tennessee Wesleyan; the victory also gave UVa-Wise its 500th win in the last 25 years. Throughout his tenure, Banner’s clubs have been known for consistency. The Cavs have posted at least 20 wins in six of the last seven seasons. Over that period, UVa-Wise has posted two 30 win seasons, a divisional championship, and consecutive third place finishes in the NAIA Region XII Tournament. Banner is a 1992 graduate of UVa-Wise. While a student, the coach was a four-year member of the Cavaliers’ baseball team and started at second base on the 1989 and 1990 conference championship teams. Season Preview UVa-Wise will enter its final season in the NAIA and in the Mid-South Conference in 2013. The Cavaliers are coming off a season in which the club posted a 24-26 overall record and an 8-12 mark in Mid-South play. Head Coach Hank Banner’s squad saved its best for last in 2012 as the team advanced to the semi-finals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament before losing 6-2 to regular season champion Lindsey Wilson College. This season, the Cavs are scheduled to play 17 of the season’s first 22 games away from Stallard Field. UVa-Wise will open the season on February 1 when the team travels to Reinhardt University for a three game set. The club is scheduled to play its home opener on February 16 when future conference foe Urbana University visits Wise for a four game series. The Cavs will begin league play on February 22 when the team visits the Blue Raiders of Linsey Wilson College. Overall, UVa-Wise has 50 games scheduled in 2013, including a nine game home stand from March 29 - April 10. Veteran pitching coach Doug Bates will be charged with the duty of replacing the 230 innings that were lost through graduation and attrition from a year ago. Senior Justin Wilson returns as the ace of the pitching staff. A year ago, Wilson hurled a team-high 74 innings while also leading the team in earned run average, 2.43 and batting average against, .208. The 2.48 ERA ranked the St. Paul, Va. native seventh in the Mid-South. Milligan College transfer Cody Compton will receive an opportunity to join Wilson in the weekend rotation. A junior, the left handed Compton split time between the bullpen and rotation at Milligan. In 2012, he struck out 19 hitters in 29.2 innings of work in addition to collecting two mound wins. Sophomore Ben Coffman may be poised to secure a slot in the weekend rotation as well. As a freshman, Coffman pitched 26.2 innings surrendering just seven extra base hits. He started six games in 2012, earned two wins, and fanned 19 hitters in his inaugural season. Junior Josh Massie is the only other returner who started a game for the Cavs in 2012.

Spending most of his time in the bullpen, Massie compiled a 4.70 ERA in 7.2 innings while also striking out seven. R.W. Payne and Ryan Ward return to anchor the bullpen after both players had a successful 2012. Payne posted a .237 batting average against and a 2.53 ERA in just over 10 innings. Meanwhile, Ward limited hitters to just a .261 average en route to a 2.91 ERA in his 21.2 innings. Ward tied for the team lead in appearances, 19, while also notching a win and a save with his submarine delivery. Danny Bates will make the transition from the field to the mound in 2013. A three pitch pitcher, the junior right hander can consistently throw in the upper 80’s while commanding his fastball low in the strike zone. Unquestionably, the strength of the team appears to be at the plate. Brett Hylton and Tommy Meier return for their senior season after each player earned Mid-South All-Conference accolades as a junior. Hylton led the team in home runs, nine, runs batted in, 44, total bases, 92, and in slugging percentage, .554. Meier led the club in average, .373, hits, 69, runs, 39, on base percentage, .459, and stolen bases, 11. The duo either scored or drove in 132 of the team’s 234 runs last season. In addition, Hylton and Meier were superb defensively; Hylton led the team with four outfield assists while Meier committed only two errors en route to a league leading .993 fielding percentage. Chaz Hall, Kirk Jennings, and Brian King also return for their senior season in a Cavalier uniform. One of the more durable players in the history of the program, Hall has started in 120 games entering his senior campaign. As a junior, the middle infielder joined Meier as the only player to start all 50 games. Jennings possesses a powerful bat and the ability to play first base in addition to seeing time at designated hitter. Through three seasons, Jennings has blasted six home runs and produced 43 RBI. Widely regarded as the top defensive first baseman on the team, King brings a career .302 average into his senior season. The Chantilly, Va. product led the team with 14 doubles and finished second on the team in

11

RBI with 31 as a junior. Sophomore Steven Allen will look to avoid injury in 2013; a year ago, Allen scored 14 runs and collected four doubles in just 29 games. The second baseman is also willing to take a walk which is evident by his nine walks in just over 100 plate appearances in 2012. The sophomore tandem of Brandon Fletcher and Matt Murphy will see more playing time this season after getting their feet wet with a combined 62 at bats as freshman. Recruiting Coordinator Erik Lemley’s work could provide major dividends in run production and experienced talent. Ryan Apodaca joined the club this fall after two seasons at Chesapeake Community. The 5’8 Apodaca has the ability to play all three outfield positions and will be given the opportunity to earn a starting nod in the outfield. Transfer Tyler Hutson is set to provide another power bat for the team. The 6’0, 250 pound first baseman started in all 50 games for Milligan College in 2011 en route to producing 30 RBI and a .287 batting average. The team also added former highly touted baseball prospect and quarterback Tye Marshall to the roster this winter. Marshall will split time between the field and mound in his return to the diamond. A versatile player, Marshall can play middle infield and in the outfield while possessing enough talent to garner significant playing time at any defensive position or on the mound. In addition to Marshall, Nick Impellizzeri enrolled at UVa-Wise following the fall semester after playing at Shepherd University. Like Apodaca, the athletic Impellizzeri will compete for a starting outfield position. The 2013 Cavs are predicted to finish ninth in the Mid-South according to the conference’s preseason poll which is voted on annually by the league’s coaches. Defending regular season champion Lindsey Wilson College is the preseason favorite while Georgetown College and Cumberland University also received first place votes. In 2013, the league will hold an eight team tournament beginning at the end of April, teams finishing 9-11 in the regular season standings will not participate in this year’s tournament.

Stallard Field On February 20, 2004, the inaugural baseball game was played on Burchell “Slew” Stallard Field. UVa-Wise celebrated the inaugural game with a 7-3 victory over Bluefield College. The facility has become a favorite to all teams and more importantly the Cavaliers to play on. Stallard Field is home to a meticulously manicured infield along with a soft, smooth bluegrass outfield. Located directly in front of Greear Gymnasium, the facility is surrounded by a walking track with Darden Drive only a long home run away. A year ago, UVa-Wise enjoyed one of its best seasons at Stallard Field.

Burchell “Slew” Stallard Tough, resilient, respect, bold, discipline, scholar, dependable, patient, leader, coach, and player; all are some of the many words that could be used to illustrate qualities of one of the great coaching legends of Wise County. Coach Burchell “Slew” Stallard will be remembered for his team’s discipline and his caring for his players. “A tall man with a great big heart” as described by one of his former teachers, Stallard made his mark by leading many championship football and baseball teams at Grundy, Big Stone Gap, Powell Valley, and Coeburn High Schools. “I had several championship teams, but I am proudest of the champions I helped to educate in the classroom, for life” quoted his wife Iloe, of the late coach who passed away in the spring of 2000. The Milligan College “Hall of Fame” member and alum was named as one of the five UVa-Wise Coaching Legends in 2001. The baseball field was named in his honor in March of 2004. Former Stallard player and disciple, Ray Spenilla said “Iloe Stallard’s contribution in memory of Coach Stallard to help ‘his boys’ along with countless contributions from others have made Stallard Field a point of pride for the College and its supporters.”

currently serving as Chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Committee. In addition to his longstanding business relationships with many of our members, Reid has provided excellent leadership for all of us throughout this process and we have every confidence he will continue to do so as we forge ahead on this new path.” Amos is excited about the opportunities which lie ahead for the MEC and its 12 charter members. “We are very pleased to have presented our credentials to the NCAA seeking to become the 25th Division II Conference,” Amos said. “The MEC will value providing a quality experience for its student-athletes in a highly competitive conference. Our institutions are committed to moving forward as a model conference guided by NCAA standards which enable our best programs to rank among the nation’s best. With the great athletic history of our institutions, I am honored to be named the first Commissioner of the Mountain East Conference by our Board of Directors as we move forward into a bright future.” If the MEC is approved for competition in 20132014, the league would meet the NCAA requirement for conference championships in 16 sports: men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s track and field, and volleyball.

The 12 institutions that announced the formation of the Mountain East Conference in August have officially applied for approval to begin competing as the NCAA’s newest Division II conference in 2013-14. The MEC’s formal application, signed by the presidents of all 12 institutions was hand-delivered to NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis on Friday along with all supporting documentation. Pending approval from the NCAA, the new league’s charter members include: Concord University (W.Va.), Fairmont State University (W.Va.), Glenville State College (W.Va.), Notre Dame College (Ohio), Shepherd University (W.Va.), The University of Charleston (W.Va.), The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (Va.), Urbana University (Ohio), West Liberty University (W.Va.), West Virginia State University (W.Va.), Wheeling Jesuit University (W.Va.), and West Virginia Wesleyan College (W.Va.) The MEC Board of Directors, composed of the presidents of the 12 institutions, voted unanimously to move forward with the process of forming the new regional all-sports conference during a November meeting at Fairmont State University. The Board approved the selection of West Liberty University president Robin C. Capehart as Chair of Board of Directors and unanimously supported the appointment of Reid Amos as the league’s first Commissioner upon the recommendation of the MEC’s Committee of Athletic Administrators (CAA). Amos, currently Vice President of Broadcasting at West Liberty, had been serving as recording secretary and spokesperson for the conference in addition to working as a liaison between the CAA and the Board since the decision to form a new league was reached. “Reid has nearly two decades of experience with NCAA Division II athletics and has successfully led many initiatives, particularly in the areas of conference development and media enhancements,” Capehart said. “In fact, he is 25

2012 Review Head Coach Hank Banner’s Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 Mid-South Conference Tournament before losing to Lindsey Wilson and ending the season at 24-26. Solid pitching dominated the club as Ryan Crosby and Justin Wilson combined to win eight games in a season in which both players finished with sub 2.50 ERA’s. Crosby also established a new single-season strikeout record at UVa-Wise with 90 punch outs. As a unit, pitching coach Doug Bates’ staff posted a 4.05 ERA with 301 strikeouts. The staff also limited opponents to a .263 batting average in addition to posting a strikeout to walk ratio greater than 2:1. Offensively, the junior duo of Brett Hytlon and Tommy Meier each earned All Mid-South Conference accolades. Hylton hit .319 with a team a team-high nine home runs, 44 RBI, and a .924 OPS. The outfielder also posted a team leading four assists in 2012 en route to a .967 fielding percentage. Meier hit lead-off for a majority of the season and flourished in the role. Splitting time between catching and center field, Meier led the team with 69 hits, 39 runs, and a .373 average. Meier also contributed half of the team total in steals as he swiped 11 bags in 2012. Like Hylton, he had a breakout season defensively as he led all Mid-South players with at least 250 chances in fielding percentage at .993. In 2012, five Cavaliers played their final game in the Red and www.uvawisecavs.com

Gray. In addition to Crosby, Chris Smith, Cody Bentley, Jon Cox, and Freddy Garay all ended their baseball careers. The aforementioned Crosby finished tops in the conference in strikeouts per nine innings in a season in which he hurled 69.1 innings. The record holder also threw a team-high six complete games and won seven games. Castlewood, Virginia native, Chris Smith made the transition to closer for his senior campaign and won five decisions for the team. The right hander posted a 3.69 ERA in 46.1 innings of work and struck out 31 hitters. Cody Bentley battled injury throughout his final season but remained a consistent weekend starter for the team. A year ago, he fired over 50 innings, struck out 33 hitters, recorded a win, and a save. Jon Cox also struggled with injuries and was limited to just over 20 innings of work. He made three starts and 10 relief appearances in 2012 as he notched one victory. The lone position player lost from last season was Freddy Garay. In his only season as a Cav, Garay finished second on the team in average at .333 and on base percentage, .399. Garay collected 50 hits, 10 doubles, and a pair of home runs splitting time between designated hitter and catcher. Several young Cavs made significant strides in 2012 both on the mound at the plate, and in the field. On the mound, RW Payne and Ryan Ward each finished with ERA’s under 3.00. At the plate, junior Brian King hit .294 with 30

a team-best 14 doubles. Overall, he finished second on the team in extra base hits, 19, and RBI, 34. King also proved to be one of the more versatile players on the club by spending time in the outfield and at first base. Junior Chaz Hall joined Meier as just one of two players to play and start in all 50 games, a year ago. The middle infielder hit .253, scored 22 runs, and produced a game winning hit against the University of Pikeville. Freshman Steven Allen overcame an ankle injury to play solid defense at second base and produce 25 hits and four doubles in just over a half season’s worth of play. Bentley, Kirk Jennings, and Wilson received Academic All Mid-South honors at the conclusion of the 2012 year. Jennings and Wilson also received NAIA Academic All-American status for their work in the classroom. Moving forward, the club will have to replace 119.1 weekend innings and improve on its defense. UVa-Wise finished last in the conference with 103 errors in 2012 and in fielding percentage, .940. Despite the loss of experienced pitching and fielding difficulties, the team returns two All MidSouth players at the plate and another career .304 hitter.

A Look Back opponent batting average at .193. Metheney’s talent did not go unnoticed as the Philadelphia Phillies drafted him in the ninth round of the 1993 Major League Baseball draft. With the selection, Metheney became the first Cavalier ever selected in the professional draft, regardless of sport. Including the ’89 and ’90 title teams, the Cavs have advanced to regional play seven times while winning more than 500 games in the past 25 seasons. In addition, the program has honored two more All-Americans, Steve Tyler in 2002 and Brad Robbins in 2010. 2011 saw UVaWise capture its third baseball title as the team captured the Mid-South Eastern Division crown in its first season in the Mid-South. The three regular season conference championships ranks the baseball program first at UVaWise in number of titles amongst male sports and second overall. Below and in the pages that follow, you will find up to date records and information on UVa-Wise baseball, forever linking former student-athletes and coaches with the present.

Throughout the history of UVa-Wise athletics, the sport of baseball has always played a prominent role. From humble beginnings in the 1950’s, the Cavaliers have always fielded a baseball team. Joining men’s basketball as the earliest sport started at then Clinch Valley College, the baseball program has been home to many of the firsts in the athletic history of the institution. In 1989, it was the baseball team that claimed the College’s first ever athletic title. Despite not offering any form of athletic scholarship money, the 1989 club overcame the odds to capture the District 32 championship. That year, the College also saw its first student-athlete obtain the honor of All-American as Bill Higgins and Mike White earned the honor for their roles in aiding the baseball team to the title. One year later, the program claimed its second consecutive District 32 title; the back-to-back championships laid the ground work for future athletic success. Talent continued to pour through the Cavalier program in the early ‘90’s as young right handed pitcher Nelson Metheney dominated opposing hitters. To this day, Metheney still holds the UVa-Wise career record for lowest

The Charles City, Va. native graduated from UVa-Wise in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in business administration. While a student, Dixon served as an intern in the David J. Prior Convocation Center. In that role, he oversaw game day operations for the sports of basketball and volleyball while also assisting in stage construction and setup for other events in the center. In addition, he also worked at a local radio station where he co-hosted a daily sports talk show discussing local and national sports while also working in radio production. In his current capacity, Dixon will assist in the day to day operations of the sports information department, where he will produce game day articles, keep statistical data, update the school’s athletic website, and oversee game day operations for various sports. The assistant sports information director also serves as the assistant to the director of the David J. Prior Convocation Center. Dixon lives in Wise, Va.

Darrell-Dingus Ely is in his third year as the sports information director at his alma mater. An avid supporter of UVa-Wise Athletics, Ely began his tenure in the department as a volunteer assistant in 2007. A year later, Ely accepted a position as a student assistant where he assisted the department in keeping statistical information, game releases, game previews, audio broadcasts and website development. In 2009, he was again promoted, this time to the assistant sports information director position. In that role, Ely served as the school’s main media contact for baseball, golf, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s tennis, and women’s tennis. A year later, he was promoted to the sports information director position. While serving as the SID, Ely has increased the exposure of UVa-Wise athletes. In the spring of 2010, he wrote two feature stories, one on Brad Robbins, the school’s alltime home run leader in baseball and one on Lauren Snead, the school’s all-time leader in wins for the sport of softball. Each feature story was published nationally on the NAIA website and appeared in various newspapers across the state. During his tenure, the school has also increased audio and video webcasts of Cavalier Athletics. The 2011-2012 school year ended with UVa-Wise broadcasting all football games while all conference games were broadcasted for baseball along with men’s and women’s basketball. To date, the school also broadcasts all home volleyball matches online. Athletic Coaches victories. The team captured the first AAC regular season title in the program’s history while also claiming the conference tournament title. The team made the first NAIA national tournament appearance in school history where they fell 78-73 to traditional power Cornerstone (IA) University. Before taking over the UVa-Wise program, Clark was a successful high school coach. In six years, he led Twin Springs High School to four Region D championships and a state title. During his tenure, Clark’s teams tallied an impressive 126-28 record. Under Clark, Twin Springs netted four 20-win seasons, four VHSL Group A state tournament appearances and three Group A Final Four trips. He was named Region D Coach of the Year for three consecutive seasons and Cumberland District Coach of the Year five consecutive seasons. Clark earned his bachelor’s degree from UVa-Wise in 1985 and later received his master’s degree in education from Lincoln Memorial University.

Karen Bitter, Softball

Karen Bitter is in her second season at the helm of the UVa-Wise softball program. A year ago, Bitter’s squad finished the season 23-32 after being eliminated in the third game of the 2012 Mid-South Softball Tournament. Bitter’s inaugural season was highlighted by a victory over nationally ranked Georgetown College in the opening round of the conference tournament in addition to having three studentathletes named to the All-Mid-South team at the conclusion of the regular season. Sophomore Sarah Wiltshire also established three new single season records under Bitter’s direction in 2012. Bitter came to UVa-Wise following a successful stint at NCAA Division II member institution Chowan University, where she served as the pitching coach for three seasons. A Virginia native, Bitter was a member of one of the most successful coaching staffs at the Division II level, with the Chowan softball team piling up 30-win seasons in her final two seasons as the pitching coach while also capturing two CIAA divisional titles. Bitter is no stranger to success, whether it is in the dugout or on the mound. The former pitcher began her career at Tabb High School in Yorktown, Va., where she caught the eye of the coaches at Shepherd College. Bitter became the most accomplished pitcher in Shepherd College softball history, and is still the holder of several single-season and career school records. After completing her softball career, Bitter joined the coaching staff at Washington College in Maryland, serving as a graduate assistant. After her stint at Washington College, she joined the Chowan staff as a pitching coach before the 2009 season where she remained until accepting the UVa-Wise job. The coach and her husband, Nick, live in Big Stone Gap, Va. The couple has a newborn daughter, Riley.

Leigh Clark, Women’s Golf

Leigh Clark is in her first season at the reigns of the UVa-Wise women’s golf program. Clark returns to the athletic department, after previously serving as the men’s golf coach, to guide the women’s program in its inaugural season. “I am excited about the new women’s golf program at UVa-Wise and I am honored to be the coach,” said Clark. “I look forward to the opportunity to work with motivated and talented young women athletes on and off the golf course.” According to UVa-Wise Athletic Director Danny Sterling, “Leigh brings a wealth of golf knowledge and a deep commitment to the college to this position. Her focus on putting academics above all else and her belief in the overall development of the Student-Athlete will make the women’s golf program successful. We greatly appreciate Coach Clark taking on the challenge of starting a new program, and fully believe that the young women who are fortunate enough to play for her will be better golfers, students and people.” The coach and her husband, Mark, have two grown children, Aaron and Anna. The couple live in Wise, Va.

Lee Clark, Men’s Basketball

This season will mark the 17th season for Lee Clark as head men’s basketball coach at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Throughout his tenure, the veteran coach has been apart of the most successful stretch of Cavalier Basketball. Last season, UVa-Wise improved on its Mid-South Conference record, the Cavaliers finished with victories over three Top 25 opponents and won six games in the

Jim Kelly, Men’s Golf

Jim Kelly will enter his fourth season directing the men’s golf program at UVa-Wise in 2013. A year ago, Kelly’s team hosted the MidSouth Spring Invitational at the Cattails Golf Course at Meadoview in Kingsport, Tennessee. The event marked the first time that UVa-Wise had hosted a conference golf tournament. Two seasons ago, Kelly saw his team claim the Lonesome Pine Invitational crown to finish the 2010 fall campaign. The team continued to progress throughout the season as many young golfers improved their individual game under Kelly’s tutelage. As a team, the Cavaliers posted a solid fifth place performance at the Montreat Spring Invitational in mid March. Prior to coming to UVa-Wise, Kelly coached golf, baseball and

competitive league. This year, Clark will count on veteran leadership and experience to build upon last year’s season, returning two starters, while welcoming a very talented group of freshman to the UVa-Wise program. The 17th-year head coach holds the most career men’s basketball coaching victories with 198 wins. Twice, Clark has led the Cavaliers to the national tournament; most recently, UVa-Wise captured the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament crown in 2010 with a dramatic 86-85 over Union College. The team advanced to Point Lookout, Missouri where they fell to Indiana Wesleyan in the opening round of the NAIA Tournament. Meanwhile, his 2003 squad set a new school record with 24

Athletic Coaches a new offensive philosophy of balance on the offensive side of the ball. UVa-Wise rushed for almost 1,800 yards that season, their highest single season total since 2007. While the passing totals dropped to an average of 163 yards per game, the rushing total increased to 163 yards per game, the highest total since the Cavs claimed the 2007 Mid-South East title. The former offensive coordinator came to UVa-Wise after serving 14 years as an assistant coach to the now retired Emory & Henry College head coach Lou Wacker. While at Emory & Henry, Lusk served as the football team’s offensive coordinator in addition to the school’s head baseball coach. On the diamond, Lusk led the Wasps to more victories than any other coach in Emory & Henry history.
Lusk earned his bachelor’s degree from Emory & Henry and master’s degree from Gardner-Webb University, where he also served as an assistant coach. The Christiansburg High School product graduated in 1981. Coach Lusk is married to Mily Dover of Shelby, NC and they have two children, Gil and Landi.

football during his 17 years working for nearby Powell Valley High School. He also instructed driver’s education and physical education while at Powell Valley. The coach also spent time teaching at Coeburn High and Rye Cove High Schools for seven and nine years apiece. The UVa-Wise golf director is a graduate of Powell Valley High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University and a master’s degree from Union College. Coach Kelly and his wife Jamie live in nearby Big Stone Gap.

Donald Leech, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country In 2013 Donald Leech will enter his fourth season as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach. Leech, a lifetime runner, assisted the programs in 2009 before accepting the head coaching position in the summer of 2010. During his first season, many of the runners achieved personal best times, and both teams competed well against challenging Mid-South Conference competition. A year ago, both programs saw improvement in training methods along with increased knowledge of the conditioning required to compete at the Mid-South level. Throughout his life, Leech has participated in various running clubs which furthered his knowledge of cross country training. On campus, he serves as an assistant professor of history where he teaches medieval and early modern european history. Leech earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 2007.

Danny Rowland, Men’s and Women’s Tennis

Danny Rowland, who has four times been named Appalachian Athletic Conference coach of the year, will begin his 20th season as UVaWise men’s tennis coach and his 18th as women’s tennis Cavaliers coach when his teams take to the courts in the spring of 2012. The UVa-Wise women claimed the 2006 AAC tournament title and hosted the NAIA Region XII tournament before falling to event regional winner Indiana-Southeast. Rowland is a 1984 graduate of then Clinch Valley College. The coowner of Impressions Inc. resides in Wise, Va.

Dewey Lusk, Football

Lusk will begin his third season as the head coach of the UVa-Wise football program in 2013 following a disappointing 2012 season. After an exciting first year in 2011 finishing 5-6 and coaching one of the most exciting plays in school history, Lusk was unable to build on that momentum. Going 3-8 in 2012, Coach Lusk is looking to make a rebound and get back to his usual winning ways. In his tenure, Lusk has been known as an offensive mastermind. During his stint as the offensive coordinator, Lusk helped UVa-Wise become one of the most vaunted offensive juggernauts in NAIA football. In 2008, the Cavalier offense finished fourth in the NAIA in scoring offense (41.4 ppg) while finishing second in the nation in pass efficiency (174.9) and total offense (477.5 yds./gm). The Cavs led the Mid-South East in scoring offense, pass efficiency and total offense that season as well. Quarterback Randy Hippeard highlighted the 2008 offensive attack by becoming the first UVa-Wise quarterback to lead the nation in total offense (339.9 yds/gm) and passing yards (330.6 yds/gm) In 2009, UVa-Wise once again had an outstanding offense and the individual honors continued to roll in. Wide receiver Jason Lovett was named NAIA All-American, while quarterback Brad Robbins, wide receiver Matt Barbour, and lineman Brian Pisani were named Mid-South East All-Conference. As a unit, the Cavaliers found the turf of Carl Smith Stadium to be friendly; the offense produced nearly 30 points per game at home. In his final season as an assistant, the Cavaliers began implementing

Kristen Salyer, Volleyball

In 2012 Kristen Salyer completed her first season as head coach of her alma mater. With a young team Salyer entered a rebuilding phase and looks to build on the experience and momentum that 2012 brought her and the UVaWise Volleyball program. Prior to accepting the position, the first year head coach served as an assistant under Kendall Rainey after earning Appalachian Athletic Conference and All-Region XII accolades as a player. Salyer also played an integral role in the school’s most successful volleyball season as she aided UVa-Wise to the Region XII crown and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament in 2007. “I am thankful for the opportunity to coach this team. I take pride in being an alumnus of UVa-Wise volleyball and love this program”, said Salyer. “We have a great group of players returning and incoming, and I am excited to see them reach their potential. We are coming off of a good performance in the Mid-South tournament in 2011 and a spring semester of hard work. I expect to see this team build from those experiences and continue to move this program forward.” A Gate City, Va. native, the coach graduated from UVa-Wise in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. Salyer currently lives in Wise, Va.
