Involvement

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE The Get Involved! Guide is a great way to start learning about the opportunities available to you as you consider how to spend your free time outside of classes. Getting involved can take on many forms – active involvement in your hall council, joining student organizations, community service, or planning events are just a few of the ways that you learn new skills, meet new people, and define your Michigan experience. Research suggests that campus involvement is linked to a better overall college experience. Although the University of Michigan can feel large and intimidating, becoming involved with student organizations can quickly transform this anxiety into comfort and inevitably open doors to bigger opportunities.

Some advice as you begin: 1. Don’t be afraid to try something new – the outcome of taking a risk may surprise you! 2. Explore academic interests - this can help you determine to which major you want to commit. Your advisor may have some organizations to recommend to you. 3. Choose opportunities made for YOU – find others who share similar interests. 4. Find a balance – Learn the value of finding a balance between academics, work, co-curricular involvement, and good physical and mental health. Establishing a good balance requires sacrifice as well as reserving time for personal reflection to assess your needs. 5. Attend mass meetings with friends or by yourself. These informational meetings will offer insight into the goals of an organization with no commitment to join! In this guide you will be introduced to campus offices, such as the Center for Campus Involvement, that are here to help you! If you have questions or find yourself getting stuck, don’t hesitate to reach out! Each section features student profiles that answer the question “why get involved?” so that you can learn from successful student leaders what the buzz is all about. This guide features only a FRACTION of what the University has to offer! Maize Pages is an online hub that organizes and features all of the university’s recognized student organizations. At the bottom of each page in this guide you will find information on how to search Maize Pages to find more organizations that you may enjoy! Read more about Maize Pages on the inside of the back cover. CHECK THIS OUT: at the bottom of each section there is a suggestion of how to use Maize Pages to learn more.
