The University of Texas at San Antonio was founded on June 5, 1969, by Texas Governor Preston Smith.

This is

UTSA serves the San Antonio metropolitan area and the broader region of South Texas through programs and services offered from its three campuses: Main Campus, Downtown Campus and Hemisfair Park Campus. With more than 28,400 students enrolled in 131 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, UTSA is the second-largest component in The University of Texas System and has been one of the state’s fastest-growing public universities for much of the last decade. UTSA listed an enrollment of 28,413 (24,648 undergraduates) for 2008-09, making it the sixthlargest school in the state of Texas. UTSA offers 64 bachelor’s, 44 master’s and 20 doctoral degree programs in the colleges of Architecture, Business, Education and Human Development, Engineering, Honors, Liberal and Fine Arts, Public Policy, Sciences and in the Graduate School.

Dr. Ricardo Romo, a San Antonio native, became UTSA’s fifth president in 1999 and is the first Hispanic president in the university’s 30-year history.

Main Building

The university’s three campuses provide access and opportunity for large numbers of historically underserved students. More than 56 percent of UTSA’s students come from groups underrepresented in higher education. Many students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. As the region’s largest generator of engineers, artists, business professionals, teachers, scientists and technology managers, UTSA has produced more than 76,000 graduates since awarding its first degree in 1974. UTSA has a total of 586 budgeted tenure/tenuretrack faculty positions. Ninety-eight percent of full-time faculty hold doctorates or equivalent terminal degrees. More than 260 tenured and tenure-track faculty positions were added during the last seven years and 69 percent of tenuretrack faculty hired have been women and minorities. In addition to the educational advantages UTSA offers, its economic impact directly and indirectly produces $852 million in annual business activity in Texas, including more than 6,500 jobs and $200 million in personal income. Purchases by UTSA in 2007 totaled more than $48.6 million, with $17.2 million or 35 percent designated or obtained from historically underutilized business (HUB) vendors. UTSA has plans for $265 million in construction over the next several years. The University recently received funding from the Texas Legislature for an $82 million building for the College of Engineering, where enrollment has grown more than 90 percent in six years.

C am p u s L i f e Laurel Village UTSA has four housing complexes on its Main Campus offering several styles of group living. On-campus housing accommodates approximately 3,700 students. Students living on-campus are close to classrooms, the student center, food courts, library, athletics facilities and the student recreation center. Chaparral Village and Laurel Village are the two newest on-campus residences and both offer two- and fourbedroom suites with cable television, high speed Internet and kitchenettes, study rooms, a computer lab, a swimming pool and basketball courts.

The UTSA Library provides both electronic and physical access to information resources and services including a collection of 742,000 volumes, 2,300 periodical subscriptions, 30,000 electronic journals, 48,000 electronic books, approximately 300 electronic databases as well as manuscripts, maps, media and microforms.

The Recreation and Wellness Center is a state-of-the-art 300,000 squarefoot facility housing a wide variety of programs and facilities from fitness and aquatics centers, basketball, racquetball and beach volleyball courts to massage studios and a rock-climbing wall.

M i s s i o n S tat e m e n t Team Academics was established in order to provide academic services for student-athletes. We provide the necessary academic support services for all studentathletes to be successful in the classroom and pursue an undergraduate degree while competing as an athlete. The center is dedicated to the academic and personal development of all student-athletes. Consistent with the mission of the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Athletics Department is committed to provide an environment in which student-athletes can be successful academically, athletically and socially. In doing so, the department dedicates itself to absolute compliance with the rules of the University of Texas System, the university, the Southland Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Academic Success UTSA student-athletes have earned numerous academic awards in the past seven years. Twenty-two Roadrunners have been named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports, the league’s top honor, for academic and athletics success. UTSA has had five student-athletes chosen as an ESPN the Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-American, one of the top honors that can be bestoweds upon a collegiate athlete, while 24 have earned Academic All-District accolades the last five years. Since 2003, 463 student-athletes have been named to the SLC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, including 98 in the 2008-09 academic year.

Academics In April 2009, a state-of-the-art academic learning center opened its doors to UTSA student-athletes. The 4,000 square-foot Student-Athlete Academic Center houses five study carrels, two large conference rooms, a classroom, computer lab and office space for the Academic Services staff.

ari Goodyear is in her seventh year as assistant athletics director for academic services. Goodyear oversees academic support services for the entire athleticsdepartment. During her tenure at UTSA, her department has seen the addition of a permanent study hall, a tutor and mentor program for student-athletes, an expansion of the full-time academic staff and the opening of the UTSA Student-Athlete Academic Center. In the last five academic years, 22 Roadrunners have garnered Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year honors. Goodyear came to UTSA from Texas Tech, where she served as assistant director for athletics academic services for three years and as an academic counselor from 1995-99. She also was an academic advisor at Arkansas State from 1993-95. She began her career in academics as a graduate assistant in athletics advising at Texas State in 1990 and remained in that role until 1993. Goodyear then served as an academic counseling intern at Texas in spring 1993. Goodyear earned her bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in sociology from Texas in 1990 and her masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in developmental education from Texas State in 1998. The Austin native and her husband, Gary, have two daughters, Bailey and Libby.

“There are more than 380,000 student-athletes and most of them go pro in something other than sports.” — NCAA Public Service Announcement The mission of the UTSA University Career Center is to assist students and alumni in identifying and developing the skills necessary to pursue lifelong career goals. The Career Center provides comprehensive career planning, job search skill development and a wide range of tools and resources designed to assist students and alumni in conducting a successful job search. The Career Center’s Web site, utsa.edu/careercenter, contains full-time professional, internship, co-op, work-study and part-time job listings, which are updated daily. Dozens of employers visit campus each year to interview UTSA students for full-time professional positions, as well as intern, co-op and other jobs. Multiple career fairs are held each semester and are attended by hundreds of employers from a variety of disciplines. These events offer information on full- and part-time jobs, internships and more. The Career Center employs a total of 11 career counselors, one of which, Stefanie Cisneros, is dedicated to serving student-athletes at UTSA. Individual career counseling appointments are available with counselors to discuss any aspect of your career development. They will use a variety of methods to help you learn more about career interests, including free online career assessments. In addition, career counselors can assist you in developing job search skills such as resumé writing, interview preparation and networking skills. Throughout the year, a variety of workshops are offered on various career-related topics, including several designed specifically for student-athletes.

Student-Athletes possess many of the skills and abilities, which are often sought by organization recruiters. Characteristics such as mental toughness, self-confidence, and performing under pressure are needed to be successful in any workplace. St e f a n i e Cisneros Student-Athlete Career Counselor

tefanie Cisneros is in her second year as career counselor for all UTSA student-athletes and her ninth year as a staff member of the UTSA Career Center Office. During her tenure, Cisneros has had the opportunity to speak to national audiences through professional presentations at the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers Annual Conference, the American Humanics Management Institute, the California Association for Counseling and Development Regional Conference and as a co-presenter at the National Careers Conference. Her most recent presentation, “Transfer the Magic from Playing Field to Career Field”, addressed the career development needs of student-athletes and best practices for working effectively with student-athlete populations and athletic departments. Cisneros is currently involved in several professional organizations, including memberships in the National Career Development Association (NCDA), Southern Association of Colleges and Employers (SoACE), National Association for Colleges and Employers (NACE) and the Texas Cooperative Education and Internship Association (TXCEIA). Cisneros graduated from UTSA in 2001 with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology and completed a master of arts degree in community counseling from UTSA in 2008.

i c a r d o Romo became the fifth president of The University of Texas at San Antonio in May 1999. As president, he leads one of the fastest-growing institutions of higher education in Texas and the nation. UTSA, under his leadership, is now poised to become the state’s next premier research university. Romo has led strategic efforts to enhance both access to education and excellence in scholarship and service at the university. During Romo’s tenure, UTSA’s enrollment has grown nearly 50 percent, and the university has added numerous programs and facilities to enhance student life. He also has implemented new student support programs designed to help students succeed at earning a university degree. The number of advisers has tripled, and UTSA, with nearly 28,500 students in 2008, is recognized as a leader in Closing the Gaps, a statewide initiative by the Legislature to enroll more Texans in higher education. A native of San Antonio’s West Side, Romo graduated from Fox Tech High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin on a track scholarship. He served as captain of the track and cross country team and earned All-America honors in 1966. Romo was the first Texan to run the mile in less than four minutes, and he held the school record in the event until Spring 2008. Romo earned a B.S. degree in education. He holds a master’s degree in history from Loyola Marymount University and a Ph.D. in history from UCLA. A nationally respected urban historian, Romo is the author of East Los Angeles: History of a Barrio, which is now in its ninth printing (one in Spanish). In 1980, Romo returned to UT Austin to teach history before becoming a vice provost for undergraduate education. In 2002, former President George W. Bush appointed him to the President’s Board of Advisers on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In 2004, former Secretary of State Colin Powell appointed Romo as a U.S. representative to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, and in 2005, Romo was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, San Antonio branch, and was reappointed in 2007. Romo currently serves as the vice chair. In 2006, Romo was honored by the UT Austin Friar

He was elected Chairman of the Board for the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (the largest U.S. Hispanic Chamber organization) for 2006. In 2007, Gov. Rick Perry appointed Romo to serve on the Commission for College Ready Texas. He serves on nearly 20 boards, many of them in San Antonio. He is active on several museum boards and is especially proud of his work with the United Way. Romo is married to Dr. Harriett Romo, an Associate Professor of Sociology at UTSA. She also serves as director of UTSA’s Mexico Center and works with the the Bank of America Child and Adolescent Policy Research Institute (CAPRI). They have one son, Carlos, who graduated from Stanford University and The University of Texas School of Law. Their daughter, Anadelia, attended Princeton as an undergraduate and received a doctoral degree from Harvard University and presently teaches at Texas State University. Romo has received many honors during his academic career, one of the most recent recognitions was the Isabel la Catolica award, the highest award given to non-Spanish subjects, bestowed upon him by King Juan Carlos of Spain.

ynn Hickey has made student-athlete welfare one of her top priorities as she continues to work to bring the UTSA Athletics Department to the upper echelon of the NCAA Division I standings. Under Hickey’s direction the last nine years, UTSA has claimed three Southland Conference all-sports championships while consistently winning both team and individual awards in all 16 sports sponsored by the university. On Dec. 18, 2008, UTSA’s Athletics Initiative Business Plan was approved by the UT System Board of Regents, granting permission to start a football program. Hickey made a splash with the hiring of the first-ever head football coach, as two-time National Coach of the Year Larry Coker was introduced on March 6, 2009. Hickey has led the charge for UTSA and its hosting of numerous NCAA Championship events. Since her arrival on campus, UTSA has served as host institution for the 2001 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional, 2002 Women’s Final Four, 2003 Men’s Basketball South Regional, 2004 Men’s Final Four, 2005 Women’s Volleyball Championship, 2006 Women’s Basketball South Regional, 2007 Men’s Basketball South Regional and 2008 Men’s Final Four and will host the 2010 Women’s Final Four. When the calendar is turned to 2010, UTSA will have hosted 11 NCAA Championship events in a 13-year period. In 2007, Hickey was named to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the most prestigious appointments in all of collegiate athletics. The 10-member committee oversees administration of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, including the selection and seeding of teams for the tournament. Hickey became just the second female ever selected to the committee, joining UNC Charlotte Athletics Director Judy Rose (1999-2003). Hickey has been honored nationally for her hard work at UTSA. She was named the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators 2005 Division I-AAA Administrator of the Year. Hickey earned her second national award in June 2006 as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA)/GeneralSports TURF Systems Division I-AAA West Region AD of the Year (ADOY). She also was selected to and completed the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio and Bexar County. In serving as the fourth athletics director in UTSA history, Hickey assumed the lead athletics role at one of the youngest NCAA Division I universities in the country (UTSA began athletics competition in 1981). The only female Division I athletics director that oversees both men’s and women’s sports in the state of Texas, she served as President of the Southland Conference from 2002-04 and as the SLC’s representative to the NCAA Championship/Competition Cabinet.

“It has been an exciting nine years,” said Hickey, who served on the Women’s Basketball Rules Committee from 2003-06, the last two as Chair. “We have made some good strides to bring the program to prominence nationally. San Antonio is an outstanding city and is a tremendous asset to the unlimited potential of the UTSA athletics program.” Hickey came to San Antonio from Texas A&M University, where she served as senior associate athletic director/senior woman administrator since 1994. At Texas A&M, her responsibilities included event management and marketing and promotions for 16 of the university’s 19 Division I sports. She also represented the Big 12 Conference as a member of the NCAA Championship Cabinet. From 1984-94, Hickey served as head women’s basketball coach for Texas A&M. She directed the 1993-94 Aggies basketball team to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, becoming the lowest-seeded team to ever reach that milestone. Texas A&M finished the year ranked No. 19 in the CNN/USA Today Top 25 poll. Following the season, Hickey relinquished her coaching duties to accept the promotion to senior associate athletic director. She finished her coaching career with an overall mark of 279-167 in 15 years of collegiate coaching. Before her stint at A&M, Hickey was head women’s basketball coach at Kansas State University from 1979-84. She averaged more than 23 wins per season in posting a 12539 (.762) record over five years and led the Wildcats to five consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. She was inducted into the Kansas State Athletics Hall of Fame in September 2004. A native of Welch, Okla., Hickey graduated summa cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark., with a bachelor’s degree in education. She was an AllAmerican for OBU’s nationally-ranked basketball team and a member of the USA National Team in 1973. Hickey and her husband, Bill, have one daughter, Lauren Nicole, who plays basketball at Trinity University.

n an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, the Southland has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone, as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock metropolitan area and into the eighth-largest city in Texas. UCA and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the SLC in innumerable ways, including athletics and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the league lineup also consists of Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 160,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 700,000. Famous alums include NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), U.S. Central Command general Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), ABC news and sports anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana) and country music star George Strait (Texas State). The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive,

ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Austin, Baton Rouge, Houston, Little Rock and Shreveport. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and indoor and outdoor track & field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball. The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA Championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball. The league has a proud history in volleyball, as UT Arlington has represented the conference eight times in the NCAA Tournament, advancing all the way to the NCAA Volleyball semifinals in 1989. In 2006, Stephen F. Austin moved to the second round following an opening round win against Alabama. While successful on the fields and courts, the SLC has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletics success of its student-athletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. In addition to providing expanding opportunities for studentathletes, the SLC and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership.

Media Information/goUTSA.com Media Coverage The UTSA Sports Information office assists members of the media with their coverage of all Roadrunners sports by providing player and coach interviews, feature ideas, pregame notes and updated statistics. In addition to the 2009 volleyball media guide, media members may check UTSA’s official athletics Web site, goUTSA.com, for the latest information on all the department’s 17 sports. Interviews All interviews with coaches and studentathletes must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance by contacting Associate SID Brian Hernandez. Telephone interviews are available to the media on a “call-back” basis at a time that is convenient for the coach or student-athlete. Post-match interviews with coaches and players will be conducted courtside following a 10-minute “cooling off” period. The Roadrunners’ locker room is closed to the media. Media Services Media members are encouraged to contact the UTSA Sports Information Department for media credentials at least 24 hours before a home match. Credentials can be picked up with proper photo identification at the ticket booth located in front of the Convocation Center. Phone lines for visiting radio, SIDs and members of the print media are available along press row and the main press row phone number is 210/458-4566. Practices UTSA welcomes all media to attend volleyball practices during the season. In most cases, coaches and student-athletes are available before and after practice. Head Coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff

highly-respected coach and player who is legendary locally, Laura Neugebauer-Groff begins her eighth season at the helm of UTSA’s volleyball program this fall. In her seven years as the Roadrunners’ head coach, she has tutored 23 All-Southland Conference players (seven first-team selections) and 14 all-academic honorees, including 2005 SLC Student-Athlete of the Year Meagan Daniel. Under her guidance, UTSA also has advanced to six consecutive conference tournaments and the program was honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award in Spring 2008. Last season, the Roadrunners posted 19 wins, tied for the most during her tenure, and Neugebauer-Groff’s career ledger now stands at 368-173 (.680), including 112 victories at UTSA (No. 2 in school history/just two behind leader Dave Hawk). Kendra Rowland and Kelsey Jewasko both earned first-team AllSLC accolades last fall and Jewasko was named the league’s Libero of the Year, the first honoree in school history. Stefanie Robbins was tabbed the conference’s Newcomer of the Year and she joined Amber Brooks as an All-SLC honorable mention selection. Neugebauer-Groff posted her 300th career victory in the 2005 season opener against Delaware and led the Roadrunners to an 1811 record, a 10-1 mark at the Convocation Center and a berth in the SLC Tournament championship match. In 2003, Neugebauer-Groff led UTSA to a remarkable turnaround, winning more than twice as many matches than the previous season en route to a 19-14 record and a 13-7 mark in SLC play. The young squad, which included eight freshmen, finished tied for fourth in the league standings and advanced to the semifinals of the postseason tournament.

A former All-American at the University of Texas, Neugebauer-Groff captained the Longhorns to four Southwest Conference Championships from 1982-85. In 1992, she was named to the league’s All-Decade team, and in 2002, the San Antonio Express-News named her one of its most-influential people in women’s sports. Neugebauer-Groff was a member of the National Sports Festival squad in 1983 and also participated at the 1995 World University Games in Japan. From 1986-87, she played professionally for the West German Volleyball League before joining the Chicago Breeze a year later. Neugebauer-Groff has been an annual participant in the United States Volleyball Association National Tournament since 1987. Her playing days behind her, Neugebauer-Groff was not done with the game and certainly was not done with winning. After brief stints at Hondo High School (1988-90) and as an assistant coach at Texas A&M (1990-92), she accepted the head coaching position locally at St. Mary’s University. It was there that she put together a sparkling 256-62 (.805) record and three national tournament appearances during her eight-year tenure. Neugebauer-Groff finished her stay with a 35-5 mark, the 2000 Heartland Conference Championship and league Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time. When she began her tenure at St. Mary’s, Neugebauer-Groff signed on as the Director of the Alamo Volleyball Club. She held that position from 1993-2006 and continues to be an active participant in developing volleyball in South Texas. Her local contributions have not gone unnoticed, as she was one of five recipients of the 2006 Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Service Award (presented annually to USA Volleyball members who make outstanding contributions in the area of regional operations) and a part of Jefferson High School’s inaugural Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni Class in May 2007.

Head Coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff “I feel like I’ve come full circle,” Neugebauer-Groff said when she was hired in 2002. “As a former Texas player to be back in the University of Texas system and also in San Antonio is like a dream come true.” She graduated from Texas in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and received her master’s degree in educational leadership from St. Mary’s in 1996. Neugebauer-Groff and her husband, Dwayne, have two children, Jacob and Madison.

oward Wallace, who brings more than 20 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience to the Roadrunners volleyball staff, is in his seventh season at UTSA.

During his six years at UTSA, 22 players have earned All-Southland Conference accolades (seven first-team selections) and Meagan Daniel (2003 SLC Freshman of the Year), Kelsey Jewasko (2008 SLC Libero of the Year) and Stefanie Robbins (2008 SLC Newcomer of the Year) have collected SLC postseason awards. Meanwhile, 14 student-athletes have been all-academic honorees, including Daniel, who was the 2005 SLC Student-Athlete of the Year. Wallace came to San Antonio after a six-year stint as Creighton’s head coach. In his first season, he shared Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors after leading the Blue Jays to a 15-13 record and the program’s first-ever conference tournament bid. He had 11 players earn All-MVC honors during his tenure, including five first-teamers. Wallace also coached 17 MVC Scholar-Athletes and his teams were honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for their academic achievements five times. Prior to Creighton, the Kailua, Hawaiì, native spent nine years on the coaching staff — three as an assistant and six as associate head coach — at the University of Hawaiì. Wallace also was an assistant coach at the University of Houston for four seasons from 1984-87. His playing career included various teams and levels of USA Volleyball club competition from 1975-2001. He also competed on the Washington State club team for two seasons and concluded his collegiate career with a two-year stint on the San Bernardino Valley College squad. Wallace earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Washington State in 1981 and received his master’s degree in education administration from Hawaiì in 1995. Xiang helped lead the Roadrunners to a 19 wins a year ago. Stefanie Robbins and Kelsey Jewasko were named SLC Newcomer and Libero of the Year, respectively. Meanwhile, Kendra Rowland and Jewasko were named to the league’s first team and Amber Brooks joined Robbins as an honorable mention selection. The Chicago native came to UTSA from St. Edward’s University in Austin, where he spent the previous two seasons as an assistant. He mentored the Hilltoppers’ outside hitters and liberos and also was the program’s recruiting, travel and academic coordinator. Xiang earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Indiana in 2000 and a MBA in marketing from Texas’ McCombs School of Business in 2006. He has six years of playing experience at the outside hitter and libero positions. Xiang was a member of Indiana’s club team from 1997-2000 and the squad’s captain his final season. He also played for two years at Texas, where he earned first-team All-Southern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association honors in 2006.

2009 Southland Conference Tournament

he Southland Conference Tournament returns to San Antonio for the third time in the last four years and fifth time in league history this season. The classic previously has come to the Alamo City in 1992, 2003, ’06 and ’07.

Eight teams will converge upon the Convocation Center for the 28th annual event beginning on Friday, Nov. 20. The three-day tournament runs through Sunday, Nov. 22, and the winner will earn the SLC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. The top two finishers in the East and West Division and the next four teams with the best conference records (regardless of division) will qualify for this year’s event. UTSA has appeared in 15 postseason tournaments since joining the SLC in 1991. The Roadrunners have posted an 8-14 (.364) mark in their 22 all-time matches and also have played for the league title two times. UTSA won the 2000 SLC Tournament Championship with a four-set victory against Lamar and was swept by Texas State in the 2005 final. Since 2000, the Roadrunners have won six of 13 tournament matches.
