Media Coverage The UTSA Sports Information office assists members of the media with their coverage of all Roadrunners sports by providing player and coach interviews, feature ideas, pregame notes and updated statistics. In addition to the 2009 soccer media guide, media members may check UTSA’s official athletics Web site — goUTSA.com — for the latest information on all of the department’s 17 sports.

Interviews All interviews with coaches and student-athletes must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance by contacting Soccer SID Carlos Valdez. Telephone interviews are available to the media on a “call-back” basis at a time that is convenient for the coach or student-athlete. Post-match interviews with coaches and student-athletes will be conducted on the field following a 10-minute “cooling off” period. The Roadrunners locker room is closed to the media. Media Services Media members are encouraged to contact the UTSA Sports Information Office for photography and media credentials at least 24 hours before a home match. Practices UTSA welcomes all media to attend soccer practices during the season. Please call the Sports Information Office for practice times and interview requests. Home of the Roadrunners

n its fourth season as home of the_ Roadrunners soccer team, the UTSA Recreational Sports Complex was completed in August 2006 and can accommodate more than 1,000 fans. The complex has three regulation soccer fields and is located next to Roadrunner Field (home of UTSA Baseball). In three seasons, the Roadrunners have posted a 6-6-3 home record. On Sept. 4, 2007, UTSA posted its largest crowd ever of 2,468 against Baylor. The field features a natural grass playing surface and is 110 yards long and 75 yards wide.

2009 Season Outlook

s the UTSA soccer program begins its fourth season, head coach Steve Ballard has the key ingredients of depth, experience and talent to make a run for the Southland Conference title. “Our overall goal is to win conference and make our first trip to the NCAA College Cup,” Ballard said. “We have a very talented squad up and down the roster. Our goal is within reach and not impossible to achieve. ” The Roadrunners posted a school-best 10 wins and programrecord nine shutouts in 2008. UTSA accumulated a 6-2-1 SLC mark, which tied for second place in the league standings, and reached its third straight conference semifinals. This season, Ballard’s team features his first true senior class of eight players: Celeste Carruth, Kim Gonzales, Halee Hamm, Jenny Munoz, Ezinne Okpo, Kim Selman and Kari Weiland.

“This senior class has seen everything that the rest of the team is still learning,” Ballard said. “For three years they haven’t had an upperclassman to look up to, but now they are the ones who will be looked upon to provide leadership for everyone else.” Goalkeepers Despite losing three goalies, including three-year starter Rachel Francis, Ballard brings in four keepers in freshmen Ari Calderon, Danielle Snyder and Dacia Webb and sophomore Marlee Ross. “I like our depth in goal this season,” Ballard said. “The key for our goalies is being consistent. I feel comfortable with the four players we brought in. It’s going to be a battle, but I believe we will be solid in the net.” Defenders Over the first two seasons, UTSA’s defense combined for 13 shutouts, but in 2008 the Roadrunners totaled a school-record nine shutouts, breaking the mark of seven set the previous fall. Two-time All-SLC defender Okpo will spearhead the defense. The Denton native was instrumental in helping the Roadrunners defense collect nine shutouts last year. She appeared in 20 of

Senior Halee Hamm netted a career-high five goals last season. the 21 matches and led the team with 1,613 minutes. Okpo’s athleticism also allows her to play as a midfielder or forward. A pair of three-year starters in Carruth and Hamm join Okpo in the backfield. Carruth was a 2008 honorable mention allconference performer who was vital to UTSA’s defense. She appeared in 19 matches and tallied two assists. Hamm, who also will see action up front, netted a career-high five goals, which ranked third-best on the team. She also posted 11 points last season. Also playing in the backfield are Selman, junior Jenna Pawelek and sophomores Jodi Leroy and Stephanie Ogilvie. Selman made 16 starts, while Pawelek played in 17 matches. Leroy and Ogilvie played in 19 and 17 matches, respectively. A trio of newcomers in sophomore transfer Ally Brosius, who played one season at Jacksonville State, and freshmen Kimber Chudej and Alex Saraceno will see action off the bench. “We have a lot of depth in this area, which will allow us to change players around and work with them,” Ballard said. “We have seven or eight players we can utilize in the backfield to move the ball to the front.” Midfielders The middle of the field could be the deepest posistion on the team with eight returning letterwinners in senior Gonzales and Weiland, junior Chelsea Zimmerman and sophomores Bonnie Caulfield, Katie Dugan, Jacqueline Nance and Brittany Wilson. Gonzales played in all 21 matches last year, posting three assists and a one goal. Weiland made eight starts in 21 matches. The Flower Mound native recorded two goals and a pair of helpers last year. Zimmerman, who played in one match before suffering a season-ending injury, will see action off the bench or as a starter.

Meanwhile, Caulfield played in 20 matches and collected one goal during her rookie campaign. Dugan appeared in 20 of the 21 matches as a freshman and tied for third on the team with three assists. Nance and Wilson also will see action.

days later. The Roadrunners return to the road for a pair of contests at TCU (Aug. 28) and Texas A&M (Aug. 30) before concluding at Houston Baptist on Sept. 4. The Roadrunners’ next four matches will be in San Antonio, beginning with their home-opening weekend against Utah State on Sept. 11 and Rice two days later. UTSA ends its home stand versus SMU (Sept. 18) and Baylor (Sept. 20).

Junior Allison Dillon led the team with seven goals and 18 points in 2008. Newcomers Jordyn Garcia, Leah Hendry, Kara Hoffman, Clare Jakubowski, Traci Lee and Linsday South also will see playing time. “We have a lot of options at midfield,” Ballard said. “Each player brings in a different style of play, but once they play together, they will be very tough to stop. We have some players that are quick, which will allow us to even play them up front.” Forwards Leading UTSA’s offensive strike will be junior Allison Dillon, who was an honorable mention all-performer last season. Dillon led the team for the second consecutive season with seven goals and 18 points. Junior Laurel Dierking and Munoz will join Dillon up front. Dierking made eight starts, scored one goal and added an assist in 2008. Munoz participated in 20 matches and recorded a goal and one assist during her junior season. Looking to put the ball in the net will be Hamm and Zimmerman, who can move up from their backfield and midfield positions, respectively. Newcomer Megan Torres also will see action, while Hendry, Hoffman and Jakubowski will move from mids to forward when called upon. “We have a very talented group up front who can score at will,” Ballard said. “They are led by Dillon, who just seems to find a way to score. One thing we would like to do this season is put some pressure on the opposition with our forwards throughout the match.” Schedule The 2009 schedule is highlighted by nine home matches and a full nine-match slate of Southland Conference action. The non-conference schedule features three teams from the Big 12 Conference (Baylor, Texas A&M and Texas Tech) and three from Conference USA (Houston, Rice and SMU). The Roadrunners also will square off against a pair of 2008 NCAA College Cup qualifiers in Texas A&M and Texas State. UTSA kicks off its fourth season with a season-high five-match road trip beginning on Aug. 21 at Texas Tech and Houston two

Steve Ballard Head Coach Fourth Season (SUNY-Cortland/1974)

hen UTSA Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey went searching for a head coach to build the women’s soccer program, she turned to an architect of three successful college programs — Steve Ballard. Hired on Feb. 21, 2005, Ballard has quickly transformed UTSA into an annual Southland Conference title contender in just three short years, as proven by his 17-5-4 league ledger, finishing second in 2006 and 2008 and third in 2007 and three straight SLC Tournament semifinal appearances. With more than 25 years of coaching experience, Ballard has accumulated a career record of 15394-18, which is approaching the NCAA Division I top-50 list for victories, and that translates into a .577 winning percentage in 13 years at the Division I level. In 2008, Ballard’s squad posted a school-record 10 wins and nine shutouts en route to a 10-10-1 overall record and a 6-2-1 league mark, good for second place. UTSA made its third consecutive conference semifinals showing. Meanwhile, four Roadrunners received postseason accolades. Ezinne Okpo was a second-team all-conference performer, while a trio garnered honorable mention honors (Celeste Carruth, Allison Dillon and Nicoline Joergesen). A strong believer in academics, Ballard had three players collect Academic All-SLC honors (Allison Dillon, Ezinne Okpo and Kari Weiland ayear age). His team also was recognized with the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 2007 and 2008.

Chelsea Zimmerman were tabbed second-team performers. Meanwhile, Okpo was a secondteam ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA SecondTeam Academic All-District VI selection and also collected SLC All-Academic honors for the second year in a row. Additionally, Halee Hamm was named to the league’s all-academic second team. During his first season, Ballard guided a young squad that featured 24 freshmen, including nine in the starting lineup, to an 8-9-2 overall record and second-place finish in the conference standings with a 5-1-2 mark. The Roadrunners qualified for their first SLC Tournament appearance as the No. 2 seed. A quartet of players earned all-conference honors, highlighted by Zimmerman, who also was picked as the circuit’s Freshman of the Year. The team was just as strong in the classroom, as 20 players were named to the SLC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. His squad also received the NSCAA Academic Team Award. Prior to coming to UTSA, Ballard led Eastern Illinois to four consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division I College Cup. He started the highly-successful Panthers program in 1995 and also launched programs at Averett University and Elon University.

In 2007, he led his team to records of 9-9-2 overall and 6-2-1 in SLC play en route to a third-place finish. The Roadrunners also reached the SLC Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive season and four players collected all-conference honors, led by 2007 SLC Freshman of the Year and first-teamer Alli Dillon. In 10 years at EIU, he compiled a 126-66-13 record, averaging 12 wins a season. He put together nine consecutive seasons of at least 10 victories and also oversaw a complete move into the Ohio Valley Conference in 1999 after EIU held dual membership with the Missouri Valley Conference during the 1998 season. Within a year of starting the EIU program in 1995, Ballard built the Panthers into a regional powerhouse in Charleston, Ill., compiling a 16-5 record in 1996. He continued to build upon his early success and led EIU to its first OVC Regular Season Championship in 1999 with a 12-9 mark That began a string of six consecutive conference championships. The Panthers claimed another OVC regular season title in 2000, won the tournament championship in 1998 and 2001-2004 and advanced to the NCAA College Cup from 2001-04. Ballard was named the 2000 OVC Coach of the Year after the Panthers compiled a 15-4-1 record. The following year, he guided EIU to a 14-6 ledger and the OVC Tournament Championship. In 2004, Ballard led the Panthers to a 13-5-2 record and they led the league in shots, goals, assists, points and corner kicks. After joining the OVC in 1999, Ballard’s squads went 33-4-3 (.857) in regular season league play and constructed a 10-1-1 (.869) mark in the conference tournament.

Ballard also put a high standard on academics and it was evident by the fact that his team combined for the highest grade-point average of any sport at EIU from 2001-03. The Panthers also were awarded an NSCAA & adidas team academic award for having a team gpa above 3.0 every year from 1997-2004. Three players earned the OVC Medal of Honor for women’s soccer in 2003. Prior to his success at EIU, Ballard was the head women’s and men’s soccer coach at Averett University in Danville, Va., from 1990-94. He was also an evaluator for the Virginia Olympic Development Program (ODP) during that time. Starting in 1978, Ballard was the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Elon University in Elon, N.C. In 10 years as head men’s coach, his teams won the Carolinas Conference Championship three times and finished second on three other occasions. He compiled a 106-69-16 record and the Phoenix qualified for the NAIA playoffs in nine of his 10 years as head coach. Ballard’s women’s teams at Elon advanced to the NAIA East Regional all three years and ranked among the top 10 nationally each season. During his tenure, he was named Carolinas Conference Coach of the Year and NAIA District 26 Coach of the Year. From 1982-88, Ballard was the state coach for the North Carolina ODP. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY-Cortland in 1974 and completed a master’s degree in physical education from the University of North Carolina in 1977. While at Chapel Hill, Ballard was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels.

Included in his team’s unprecedented success were numerous individual honors, including 45 All-OVC players and three OVC Player and Freshmen of the Year awards. Additionally, seven of his players earned NCAA Great Lakes All-

Kristin Boeker Associate Head Coach Fourth Season (Missouri/2001)

ristin Boeker is in her fourth season overall and third year as associate head coach at UTSA. Boeker has been a part of Steve Ballard’s staff since the program’s inception in 2005. She serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator and also oversees summer camp, travel arrangements and daily operations of the team’s practices. Boeker also works closely with the goalies, who posted a schoolrecord nine shutouts last season. After a standout four-year playing career at Missouri, Boeker began her collegiate coaching career at Eastern Illinois in 2002. She helped guide the Panthers to a 36-18-9 record in three years, including three consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championships NCAA College Cup appearances. An EIU player garnered the OVC Tournament Most Valuable Player award all three years she was there and 17 players earned allconference honors and a dozen more were all-tournament selections. The Panthers boasted the OVC Player of the Year in 2003 and the OVC Freshman of the Year a year later.

Boeker had a stellar career at the Missouri, lettering from 1997-2000. As a junior, she helped lead the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999. Boeker was named an honorable mention Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz and also earned a spot on the Soccer Buzz Freshman AllCentral Region team. She also earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors and was the Tigers’ Offensive Player of the Year. As a sophomore, she was named second-team All-Big 12, earned a spot on the conference’s alltournament team and once again was a member of Soccer Buzz’ All-Central Region team. Boeker was an assistant coach for the Missouri Olympic Development Program in Region II from 2002-04 and served as an assistant coach at Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo., in 2002. A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association, she has been involved with a multitude of well-known soccer camps at Eastern Illinois, Missouri, Notre Dame and Stanford.

Janio Cabezas Volunteer Coach Second Season

anio Cabezas, who has more than 20 years of soccer experience, begins his second season as volunteer coach this fall. Cabezas played professionally for more than 15 seasons in South America. He began his coaching career in Manizales, Colombia, as head coach of the Corp Deportiva Once Caldes in 1989. Cabezas also coached for the Athletic Buenaventura team in 1993 and then had a two-year stint at Corp Deportiva Americathird Division. In 1997, he was coach of a semiprofessional team (Puma) in San Antonio.

The University of Texas at San Antonio was founded on June 5, 1969, by Texas Governor Preston Smith. UTSA serves the San Antonio metropolitan area and the broader region of South Texas through programs and services offered from its three campuses: Main Campus, Downtown Campus and Hemisfair Park Campus.

With more than 28,400 students enrolled in 131 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, UTSA is the second-largest component in The University of Texas System and has been one of the state’s fastest-growing public universities for much of the last decade. UTSA listed an enrollment of 28,413 (24,648 undergraduates) for 2008-09, making it the sixth-largest school in the state of Texas. UTSA offers 64 bachelor’s, 44 master’s and 20 doctoral degree programs in the colleges of Architecture, Business, Education and Human Development, Engineering, Honors, Liberal and Fine Arts, Public Policy, Sciences and in the Graduate School.

Dr. Ricardo Romo, a San Antonio native, became UTSA’s fifth president in 1999 and is the first Hispanic president in the university’s 30-year history.

Main Building

The university’s three campuses provide access and opportunity for large numbers of historically underserved students. More than 56 percent of UTSA’s students come from groups underrepresented in higher education. Many students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. As the region’s largest generator of engineers, artists, business professionals, teachers, scientists and technology managers, UTSA has produced more than 76,000 graduates since awarding its first degree in 1974. UTSA has a total of 586 budgeted tenure/tenuretrack faculty positions. Ninety-eight percent of full-time faculty hold doctorates or equivalent terminal degrees. More than 260 tenured and tenure-track faculty positions were added during the last seven years and 69 percent of tenure-track faculty hired have been women and minorities. In addition to the educational advantages UTSA offers, its economic impact directly and indirectly produces $852 million in annual business activity in Texas, including more than 6,500 jobs and $200 million in personal income. Purchases by UTSA in 2007 totaled more than $48.6 million, with $17.2 million or 35 percent designated or obtained from historically underutilized business (HUB) vendors.

Official colors for The Unviersity of Texas Systems are orange and white. Upon recommendation from the UTSA Student Representative Assembly, the Board of Regents approved the addition of navy blue to the orange and white for UTSA’s colors for athletic competition.

The Mascot The Roadrunner, a bird representative of the Texas Hill Country and the Southwest, was voted by the student in 1977, to become the official mascot of UTSA. The Roadrunner was officially adopted one year later.

Soccer Academic Success

ince the program’s inception in 2006, head coach Steve Ballard not only likes to see success on the field, but in the classroom, as well. Ballard takes pride in academic achievements his players have collected over the years. The soccer team made its mark on academics known when they placed 20 student-athletes on the 2006 Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Eighteen made the list in 2007 and 22 were honored in 2008. Additionally,the soccer team was awarded the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 2007 and 2008.

Student-Athlete Success

ll too often, the term “student-athlete” ends up just becoming “athlete.” However, the UTSA Department of Athletics takes tremendous pride in the academic achievements of its student-athletes, in addition to their accomplishments on the playing field. Several student-athletes have found a way to successfully balance athletics and academics, defying stereotypical expectations of their roles on the UTSA campus. This is particularly evident by the number of Roadrunners who have earned Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year honors since the award’s inception in 2002. During that time, 15 Roadrunners have combined to collect 22 awards. “It is always an honor to have our student-athletes considered the best individual in their respective sport when combining athletics and academics,” UTSA Athletics Director Lynn Hickey said. Jessica Rogers (softball) earned the award for the third time during her illustrious four-year career in 2006-07. That came on the heels of three UTSA student-athletes collecting four awards — junior Kurt Attaway (men’s basketball), junior Meagan Daniel (volleyball) and senior Bryan Wolfe (indoor and outdoor track & field) — and a SLC-record eight Roadrunners earning awards in 2004-05. During the 2008-09 academic year, three Roadrunners earned Student-Athlete of the Year in their perspective sports (Dana Mecke/Cross Country/Women’s Track & Field, Andre Moreira/Men’s Tennis and Ryba Pawlaczky/ Women’s Basketball). The award is presented annually to the top student-athlete in each of the conference-sponsored 17 sports. It is voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each SLC school. The winner must have earned at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average to meet the minimum academic requirement. Athletics standards include superior achievement, having brought significant recognition to the institution and having competed in at least two seasons. The final component is the service requirement, for which the winner must have demonstrated significant contribution to the campus or community through service.

Academic Success UTSA student-athletes have earned numerous academic awards in the past seven years. Twenty-two Roadrunners have been named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports, the league’s top honor. for academic and athletic success. UTSA has had five student-athletes chosen as an ESPN the Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-American, one of the top honors that can be bestowed upon a collegiate athlete, while 24 have earned Academic All-District accolades. Cari Goodyear is in her seventh year as assistant athletics director for academic services. Goodyear oversees academic support services for the entire athleticsdepartment. During her tenure at UTSA, her department has seen the addition of a permanent study hall, a tutor and mentor program for student-athletes, an expansion of the full-time academic staff and the opening of the UTSA Student-Athlete Academic Center. In the last seven academic years, 22 Roadrunners have garnered Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year honors. Goodyear came to UTSA from Texas Tech, where she served as assistant director for athletics academic services for three years and as an academic counselor from 1995-99. She also was an academic advisor at Arkansas State from 1993-95. She began her career in academics as a graduate assistant in athletics advising at Texas State in 1990 and remained in that role until 1993. Goodyear then served as an academic counseling intern at Texas in spring 1993. Goodyear earned her bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in sociology from Texas in 1990 and her masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in developmental education from Texas State in 1998. Community Involvement

oadrunnners For Education is an innovative program designed to foster positive attitudes among elementary and junior high school students while allowing UTSA student-athletes to serve as role models. This is one small way for the studentathletes to give something back to the community that supports Roadrunners Athletics. Every year, the UTSA Soccer team has devoted its time not just on the field, but off the field as well. They are involved in several community service events such as the Habitat for Humanity, Roadrunner Day Move-In and delivering turkey to local food shelters. UTSA President Dr. Ricardo Romo

ne of the most decorated athletes in San Antonio history, Dr. Ricardo Romo has returned to his roots and is making UTSA one of the most highlyregarded universities in the region.

In 1980, President Romo returned to UT Austin to teach history before becoming a Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. In 2002, President Bush appointed him to the President’s Board of Advisers on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Two years later, former Secretary of State Colin Powell appointed Romo as a U.S. representative to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization. The following year, Romo was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, San Antonio branch and was reappointed in 2007. Romo currently serves as the Vice Chair.

Romo became the fifth president of The University of Texas at San Antonio in May 1999. As President, he leads one of the fastest growing institutions of higher education in Texas and the nation. UTSA, under his leadership, is now poised to be one of the state’s next premier research universities. Romo has led strategic efforts to enhance both access to education and excellence in scholarship and service at the University. During his tenure, UTSA’s enrollment has grown nearly 50 percent and the university has added numerous programs and facilities to enhance student life. He also has implemented new student support programs designed to help students succeed at earning a university degree. The number of advisers has tripled and UTSA, with more than 28,500 students in 2007-08, is recognized as a leader in “Closing the Gaps,” a statewide initiative by the Legislature to enroll more Texans in higher education. A native of San Antonio’s West Side, Romo graduated from Fox Tech High School and attended The University of Texas at Austin on a track scholarship. He served as captain of the track & field and cross country teams and earned All-America honors in 1966. Romo was the first Texan to run the mile in less than four minutes and his mark still stands as a university record. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education. Romo holds a master’s degree in history from Loyola Marymount University and a Ph.D. in history from UCLA. A nationally respected urban historian, Romo is the author of East Los Angeles: History of a Barrio, which is now in its ninth printing (one in Spanish).

He was honored by the UT Austin Friar Society as “Outstanding Friar Alumnus” in 2006. Romo was elected Chairman of the Board for the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (the largest U.S. Hispanic Chamber organization) for 2006. In 2007, Governor Rick Perry appointed Romo to serve on the “Commission for College Ready Texas.” He serves on nearly 20 boards, many of them in San Antonio and is active in several museum boards and is especially proud of his work with the United Way. Romo is married to Dr. Harriett Romo, an associate professor of sociology at UTSA. She also serves as Director of UTSA’s Mexico Center and works with the Child and Adolescent Policy Research Institute. They have one son, Carlos, who graduated from Stanford University and The University of Texas School of Law. Their daughter, Anadelia, attended Princeton as an undergraduate and received a doctoral degree from Harvard University and presently teaches at Texas State University. Dr. Romo has received many honors during his academic career. One of the most recent recognitions was the Isabel la Catolica award, the highest award given to non-Spanish subjects, bestowed upon him by King Juan Carlos of Spain.

UTSA Atheltics Director Lynn Hickey

ynn Hickey has made student-athlete welfare one of her top priorities as she continues to work to bring the UTSA Athletics Department to the upper echelon of the NCAA Division I standings. Under Hickey’s direction the last nine years, UTSA has claimed three Southland Conference all-sports championships while consistently winning both team and individual awards in all 16 sports sponsored by the university. On Dec. 18, 2008, UTSA’s Athletics Initiative Business Plan was approved by the UT System Board of Regents, granting permission to start a football program. Hickey made a splash with the hiring of the first-ever head football coach, as twotime National Coach of the Year Larry Coker was introduced on March 6, 2009. Hickey has led the charge for UTSA and its hosting of numerous NCAA Championship events. Since her arrival on campus, UTSA has served as host institution for the 2001 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional, 2002 Women’s Final Four, 2003 Men’s Basketball South Regional, 2004 Men’s Final Four, 2005 Women’s Volleyball Championship, 2006 Women’s Basketball South Regional, 2007 Men’s Basketball South Regional and 2008 Men’s Final Four and will host the 2010 Women’s Final Four. When the calendar is turned to 2010, UTSA will have hosted 11 NCAA Championship events in a 13-year period. In 2007, Hickey was named to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the most prestigious appointments in all of collegiate athletics. The 10-member committee oversees administration of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, including the selection and seeding of teams for the tournament. Hickey became just the second female ever selected to the committee, joining UNC Charlotte Athletics Director Judy Rose, who served from 19992003. Hickey has been honored nationally for her hard work at UTSA. She was named the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators 2005 Division I-AAA Administrator of the Year. Hickey earned her second national award in June 2006 as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA)/ GeneralSports TURF Systems Division IAAA West Region AD of the Year (ADOY). She also was selected to and completed the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio and Bexar County. “UTSA is very fortunate to have an athletic leader with both the administrative and coaching experience of Lynn Hickey,” UTSA President Dr. Ricardo Romo said. “Lynn not only is a leader who can take our athletic program to the next level, but she is also

well respected nationally and serves as an excellent role model for all student-athletes at this university.” In serving as the fourth athletics director in UTSA history, Hickey assumed the lead athletics role at one of the youngest NCAA Division I universities in the country (UTSA began athletic competition in 1981). The only female Division I athletics director that oversees both men’s and women’s sports in the state of Texas, she served as President of the Southland Conference from 2002-04 and as the SLC’s representative to the NCAA Championship/Competition Cabinet. “It has been an exciting nine years,” said Hickey, who served on the Women’s Basketball Rules Committee from 2003-06, the last two as Chair. “We have made some good strides to bring the program to prominence nationally. San Antonio is an outstanding city and is a tremendous asset to the unlimited potential of the UTSA athletics program.” Hickey came to San Antonio from Texas A&M University, where she served as senior associate athletic director/senior woman administrator since 1994. At Texas A&M, her responsibilities included event management and marketing and promotions for 16 of the university’s 19 Division I sports. She also represented the Big 12 Conference as a member of the NCAA Championship Cabinet. From 1984-94, Hickey served as head women’s basketball coach for Texas A&M. She directed the 1993-94 Aggies basketball team to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, becoming the lowestseeded team to ever reach that milestone. Texas A&M finished the year ranked No. 19 in the CNN/USA Today Top 25 poll. Following the season, Hickey relinquished her coaching duties to accept the promotion to senior associate athletic director. She finished her coaching career with an overall mark of 279-167 in 15 years of collegiate coaching. Before her stint at A&M, Hickey was head women’s basketball coach at Kansas State University from 1979-84. She averaged more than 23 wins per season in posting a 125-39 (.762) record over five years and led the Wildcats to five consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. She was inducted into the Kansas State Athletics Hall of Fame in September 2004.

A native of Welch, Okla., Hickey graduated summa cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark., with a bachelor’s degree in education. She was an All-American for OBU’s nationally-ranked basketball team and a member of the USA National Team in 1973. n an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the Central Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. UCA and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, the UT Arlington, UTSA, and Texas State. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (SLU), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (UCA) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington). The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and

Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its studentathletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. Also, student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 are honored on the Southland’s annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
