Undergraduate Degrees

Art (B.A., B.F.A.)

We are surrounded by art and creativity, and UTSA has several options to help budding artists create a bold future in the arts. You might be wondering: what’s the difference between a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree?

The B.F.A. is a professional degree for students who are interested in pursuing a career as an artist. If you want to change the world with your creativity, this program might be perfect for you. This program focuses more on intensive studio coursework, providing students with hands-on experience. The B.F.A. is for students who prefer to dedicate more of their studies to honing their skills in the studio and will choose a specialization in the final two years. Cross-disciplinary study is encouraged! Specializations at UTSA include:

» Ceramics

» Photography

» Drawing

» Painting

» Printmaking

» Sculpture

» New Media

The B.A. degree is a liberal arts degree that prepares students with a wellrounded art education, from studio art to general art history, to pursue various careers like art education, museum work or arts administration. This program is perfect for students who are seeking a broad foundational study in the field or for students who have an interest in multiple majors.

Art History and Criticism (B.A., Minor)

If you see yourself working in or even running an art museum someday, this is the program for you! Our Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Criticism provides in-depth exploration into a diverse body of artists, artistic works, and mediums from a wide variety of cultures throughout history. Students in the program learn how to research, write, and think critically about this wide spectrum of areas.

If you’d like to major in another field but still engage in this curriculum, we also offer Art History and Criticism as a minor program!

Graduate Degrees

Master of Arts in Art History (M.A.)

If you’re looking for an opportunity to expand your knowledge in the field of art history, consider pursuing a Master of Arts in Art History. Students gain knowledge of diverse cultural histories; artists, artisans, patrons, and institutions; methods, materials, and styles; and critical, practical, and aesthetic considerations. This degree program is designed to prepare students for teaching careers at the junior college level, doctoral study, or a wide array of careers in arts or cultural institutions in both curatorial and administrative positions.

Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)

If you dream of a career as a practicing artist, as a professional in other art enterprises, or working in higher education, the Master of Fine Arts might be the perfect program for you. This terminal degree in studio art has an emphasis on conceptual development and its harmony with formal aesthetic and art historical considerations. Students explore a myriad of mediums and styles and have the full resources of the art faculty and facilities to reach their artistic potential.

Concentrations include:

» Ceramics

» New Media

» Painting & Drawing

» Photography

» Printmaking

» Sculpture

Gain hands-on experience in a variety of artistic mediums while honing your studio skills. Cross disciplinary study is encouraged in the Art programs!

Pathways for Success

Engage with Global Art History

Students study global art history and contemporary art and criticism in and out of the classroom. In addition to dedicated lecture rooms in the Arts Building at the Main Campus and at the historic downtown Southwest Campus, students also study “out in the field,” taking advantage not only of access to campus galleries including the UTSA Russell Hill Rogers and Main Art Galleries, but also San Antonio’s many fine arts institutions such as the San Antonio Museum of Art, Ruby City, Contemporary at Blue Star, ArtPace and the McNay Art Museum.

School of Art students and faculty alike participate in events such as Contemporary Art Month (CAM), Luminaria, and FotoSeptiembre. Additionally, they can take advantage of exciting School of Art facultyled study abroad opportunities to locations in Mexico, Italy and major art centers in Texas and across the U.S.

ADOBE CREATIVE CAMPUS

Did you know UTSA is designated as an Adobe Creative Campus? UTSA is the first four-year university in Texas to be selected as an Adobe Creative Campus. This means all students have free access to the Adobe Creative Cloud software suite, access to templates, training sessions hosted by UTSA and Adobe and more!

Hone your craft in Studio Art

Students engage in studio art through traditional approaches and practices, employing the latest technologies in School of Art studios that are spread across Main, West and Southwest Campuses.

Students who take art courses have access to studios that support ceramics, sculpture, welding, foundry casting, small metals, digital & analog photography, new media, video art, animation, virtual reality, motion capture, installation, intervention, performance, interdisciplinarity and more!

Experience the art around you

Get inspired by the galleries on campus

The UTSA Main Art Gallery (Main Campus) and the Russell Hill Rogers Galleries (Southwest Campus) present exhibitions of artwork created by artists of regional, national, and international significance.

Exhibitions and public programs include both contemporary and historic themes in the full range of traditional and new media and reflect multiple cultural and critical trajectories. The galleries serve the diverse population of San Antonio and the region and offer students the opportunity to broaden their creative, academic, curatorial, and programming experience.

Explore across three campuses

Main Campus

In the ARTS Building, students will find naturally lit studios outfitted with equipment to support study of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and digital media. Students can also check out film and digital cameras, lighting, and sound equipment from the Visual Resource Center, send image files to print at the Digital Print Facility and make their own stretchers and frames in the ARTS Woodshop.

Additionally, students can draw from direct observation taking advantage of the WOO (Wunderkammer for Ontological Observation Lab). Gallery E is an experimental project space where students can explore and experiment with installation art practices and performance art.

West Campus

This compound includes multiple buildings dedicated to creating ambitious ceramics, sculptures and installation artworks. West Campus also houses multiple private studios for graduate students and a large critique space for students to display artwork.

Southwest Campus

At the historic Southwest Campus in downtown San Antonio, students will find spacious studios to work in a variety of media including book arts, ceramics, photo, sculpture, digital media and can engage with craft media in small metals, book arts, fibers, letter press and papermaking.
