Hola!

One can survive everything nowadays, except death, and live down anything, except a good reputation.

Life wasn’t meant to be boring and UTS Union totally agrees. That’s why we’ve packed out the social calendar for 2012. With all kinds of events UTS will be the place to be and Playground will talk you through every single one of them. Kicking the year off, O’Fest is a not to be missed Orientation Welcome Festival, then check out our end of uni parties, Art Week, Green Week, Cheese and Wine and Chocolate Week’s, State of Origin, DJ Comp, Band Comp, Art Comp, UTS Olympics, Weekly Events and more. Not happy with these offerings head to our facebook page and let us know what you want.

Hello, I’m James, the President of the UTS Union board. Welcome back to UTS, I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season! I like to think of the UTS Union as the Faculty of Fun, we provide many of the services you see around campus. Such as many of the shops and food outlets, we support the clubs and societies of which so many of you are members, we run the bars and we organise many of the great events and parties that happen around campus. Hopefully you will or have already experienced the O-Week and O-Fest activities; it is always a fantastic experience. Make sure you join as many clubs and societies as you think you can handle, take up a University sport, they range from very competitive to fun social sports, all are a great experience and one that should be grabbed with both hands. While you’re at it check out the UTS Gym at the bottom floor of building 4 in the city campus, for students like me who need to get in shape after the break. 2012 has a lot in store for students. The Union’s services are growing along with the UTS campus, throughout the next couple of years students will see more construction happening, but more importantly they will see more of it completed and bringing new services to our campus. UTS has a lot to offer you and it can take you in directions you may not have seen coming. Perhaps you are the next Club Person of the Year, Sportsman/woman of the Year or President of the UTS Union Board. It’s all there right in front of you; all you need to do is reach out, grab hold and enjoy the ride. See you around campus! James Fox President, UTS Union

Lecture naps can be avoided! Here are some hints to help you avoid the inevitable nap in that boring lecture!  Create a routine of the same bed and wakeup time. A predictable sleeping pattern helps to synchronise your circadium rhythm. Your body temp rises and falls at the same time, giving you more energy to face the day.  Don’t eat later than 8pm to avoid your metabolism keeping you awake

indispensable App For those times at uni when you have NO idea what that word means and you don’t have your dictionary or thesaurus in your bag… www.dictionary.com - Dictionary & Thesaurus A million definitions and 90,000 synonyms are available in the palm of your hand with this free, offline dictionary and thesaurus. The app is fast and efficient, includes phonetic and audio pronunciation of words, and its interface seems perfectly suited to the iPhone.

 Playing sports or taking a long walk with friends will help you crash easier at bed time

Getting to uni

 Avoid phone games, emails, video games & computer activity right before bed as these things are known to stimulate wakefulness

Parking is limited around campus and why bring yourself unnecessary stress?! Catch a bus or train! You could even read up on those notes from last week or do that homework that’s due in 2 hours! Check out www.131500.com.au for all bus & train timetables. Or even better, help the environment and ride a bike!

Study tips  If an 8am class is required for your major, change your major  Clever page margin manipulation can turn a 4 page report into a 20 page report  Boring lecture? Start a Mexican wave! BUT in all seriousness…  It’s never to early to start studying for exams  Attend all classes and don’t fall behind on readings  Make use of all study resources at UTS, they are there for a reason  Review lecture notes weekly so its already in your head come exam time  If you’re a procrastinator, DON’T study at home. Come to the library early so you don’t miss out on a table

If you need to head to Kuring-Gai campus, UTS offers a FREE shuttle bus both ways. Head to www.uts.edu.au/about/mapsdirections/shuttleb. html to view the timetable. And remember to stay safe! Here are some tips:  Avoid isolated ares & stay on well lit paths  Walk in groups after dark  Save emergency & transport numbers in your phone  Don’t carry large amounts of money  Have some emergency money stashed in case you need to catch a cab

campus hang-outs Wanting some downtime while on campus? There are many areas to just chill and regain yourself after that drilling from your tutor or that stressful group assignment. Here are some you may not know about…  Glasshouse Bar, Level 3 Tower Building, play some pool, have a beer and forget about uni for the day  The Loft, Level 4 Tower Building, enjoy a cocktail after a long day  Fitness Centre, Harris St Ultimo, sweat out your stress  Concourse Café, Level 4 Tower Building, grab that mid morning coffee  Haymarket for tuning out on the computer  Alumni Green for relaxing in the sun  Multi Purpose Sports Hall, have a dance, shoot some hoops or run some laps to let off some steam

Top 5 things you should do before graduating  Pass all subjects (obviously!)

From their humble Kings Cross beginnings, Sneaky have etched their place into the competitive pop/electro industry and it doesn’t look like they’ll be leaving our ears empty of their sound any time soon.

has become a household Aussie name and are currently making their mark on the international dance scene.

Making music together since 2004, Black Angus and Miss Connie have produced humble but vivid first releases Hip Hip Hooray and Tease Me and fashioned their permanent mark in Aussie music history with UFO, Pictures and I Love It, winning ARIA awards for best dance release and best breakthrough artist of 2007. 2008 brought with it the release of their second LP ‘2’ featuring dance floor killers Kansas City, When We Were Young and It’s Not My Problem, which made it to number 1 on the UK club charts. In 2009, Sneaky rose to the top of the US dance airplay charts with their collaboration with DJ Tiesto on I Will Be Here. It’s safe to say Sneaky Sound System are here to stay and as their new album From Here to Anywhere suggests, part three of Sneaky’s journey is far from over and will go just about anywhere.

Sneaky will be headlining at UTS O’Fest! tix from the Student Info Desk, Level 3 UTS Tower Building. $20 UTS students, $30 everyone else. Don’t miss out!!!

quiz How to play MASTER

Monkey-Pirate-Robot-Ninja-Zombie [A hyper version of Rock-Paper-Scissors]

It seems simple: each thing can beat two other things, and is in turn beaten by two other things. Trying to remember what does what to whom and how, may possibly turn your brain inside out! Players both count to five, or repeat the name of the game “Monkey! Robot! Pirate! Ninja! Zombie! (for added awesomeness) each time you raise your fist and swing it down. On the fifth count, you form your hand into one of the five gestures. Adding an aural component is highly recommended (see below).

Zombie Zombie eats Pirate. Zombie savages Monkey. Suggested noise: braaaaaaaaaainsss!

Robot Robot chokes Ninja. Robot crushes Zombie. Suggested noise: ex-ter-min-ate!

Monkey

Pirate

Monkey fools Ninja. Monkey unplugs Robot. Suggested noise: ee-ee-eek!

Pirate drowns Robot. Pirate skewers Monkey. Suggested noise: arrrrr!

Ninja Ninja karate chops Pirate. Ninja decapitates Zombie. Suggested noise: keeee-ah! Thanks to: Mark A Rayner @ http:// markarayner.com/blog/archives/1613

LIVING IN A BOX... SOME ground rules

2 minute noodles: A solid student staple. Cheap, quick and oh so satisfying!

stretching your food budget

• Don’t be a grub! • Choose an appropriate house with like-minded house-mates (they may not like your loud Britney music playing 24/7!) • Be friendly and tolerant to all house-mates • Pay bills on time No one likes a tight arse! • Address all problems asap, nicely and face to face... don’t write a teenage letter!

Hot dog: Use the left over sausages and onion from a previous BBQ to create your ‘ham & frog’ masterpiece!

You could always save money on food by scheduling your classes around happy hours? OR, try some of these tips instead...

POST-PARTY MUNCHIES We’ve all been there. You get home at 3am and realise all that partying has made you STARVING! Instead of buying that kebab or cheese burger, here are some worthy foods that you can whip up when you get home. cheese toastIE: We all know how to make this old favourite and the carbs will help keep the hangover at bay. Mashed spuds: Wash, peel and chop up some potatoes. Microwave for a couple of minutes and mash up good. Add some milk, butter, salt & pepper. Masterchef anyone? Pizza: Bread, tomato paste, any topping of your heart’s desire and cheese. Grill for a few minutes to melt the cheese. YUM! Bacon & egg roll: Before your big night out, make sure you’ve stocked up the fridge to cook this delicious treat on your return home.

And while we’re on the topic, here are some popular postparty foods from around the world: POUTINE (Canada): Cheese curds on top of hot chips swimming in gravy POMMES FRITES (Belgium): Thick, twice fried hot chips served with mayonaise GYROS (Greece): Souvlaki lamb served with tzatziki, hot chips and salad (1 lettuce leaf) in thick pita bread NOTE: Please kids, always remember to be responsible in the kitchen with sharp and hot objects...don’t hurt yourself!

HAPPY BELLY = Food Safety It’s important to be aware of food safety when preparing and storing all meals and snacks. Remember these tips and you will have a happy belly! • The temperature danger zone is between 5 – 60°C. Food poisoning bacteria is commonly formed in this zone • Always wash hands before and after preparing food and do the same with utensils • Refrigerate leftovers within two hours & reheat leftovers until they are steaming hot

• Bring your lunch to uni rather than buying a meal • Plan your grocery list before heading to the shops so you don’t come home with impulse purchases that may go to waste • Invest in a slow cooker – they save you time and can cook a delicious meal with leftovers for the next day • Keep an eye out for the combo deals and daily specials at Concourse Café, The Hub and Harris St Café

BBQ chook 3-ways If you’re lucky and you time it right, you can score a BBQ chicken from a major supermarket for a big discount. Usually prices are reduced later at night, especially just before closing time! 1. Chicken burritos: Add a sachet of sauce or seasoning, a capsicum, onion and wraps. Ole! 2. Satay chicken pizza: Use one of the wraps left over from the burritos, just add some sauce, veges, shredded cheese and cook to your liking 3. Chicken salad: We all know how to whip up a salad, just wash some mixed lettuce leaves, a tomato, cucumber and any veges you want, mix it all together and add some fresh lemon & olive oil. Yummy AND healthy!
