DEPARTMENT NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to the Spring 2024 edition of the Department of Surgery newsletter.

As a traditional rite of spring, we eagerly awaited the results of the annual resident match and herein, we introduce our spectacular incoming class of new general surgery residents. Please join me in giving them a very warm welcome. Thank you to Dr. Alexander Feliz (Program Director), Mrs. Cynthia Tooley (Lead Program Manager) and all of the faculty members and residents who contributed to the success of the interview process.

This edition’s Faculty Spotlight features Dr. Ravi Mohanka, Professor, Division of Transplantation, who has established himself as one of the most experienced liver transplant surgeons in India. Dr. Mohanka will lead the Transplant Institute’s living donor transplant program.

On Friday, June 14, our annual Department of Surgery Research Symposium and HWSS Lecture will be held in the Nash and Mooney Buildings on the UTHSC campus. The traditional awards ceremony and graduation banquet will take place at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis.

FACULTY ANNOUCEMENTS

MAUNIL BHATT, MD

Assistant Professor, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, led the team that achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing Regional One Health’s first endovascular thoracic aortic stent procedure for aortic dissection.

XIANGXIA LIU, MD, PHD

Associate Professor, Division of Plastic Surgery, served as a visiting professor and lectured on the topic of, “Lymphedema and Liposuction” at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China.

Assistant Professor, Division of General Surgery, Director of the UTHSC Global Surgery Institute, was the recipient of the prestigious faculty Golden Apple Award for General Surgery. Dr. Zalamea delivered an invited lecture, “Global Surgery Ethics: A Work in Progress,” at Walter Reed Medical Center’s Global Surgery Day in January 2024.

Associate Professor, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, was selected to participate in the American American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) Leadership Academy, a formal program that seeks to develop and support the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery leaders of today and the future by providing ongoing professional development and networking opportunities.

Assistant Professor, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, completed the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma ( EAST) Leadership Development Program. The EAST program aims to develop future leaders via a longitudinal workshop series.

PGY3 Resident, General Surgery, was selected as the recipient of the 2024 Society of Surgical Oncology/Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Research Foundation Travel Award for his abstract entitlted “ GNAS Driver Mutations in Primary and Metastatic Nonmucinous Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma Versus Analogous Colorectal Cancers. An AACR Project GENIE Analysis.” Dr. Fleming delivered an oral presentation at the Advanced Cancer Therapies (ACT) conference held February 16-19, 2024 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The largest gathering of underrepresented minority and premedical students across the United States convened at the 60th Annual Academic Surgical Congress held March 27-31 in New Orleans, LA. The meeting was designed to prepare the next generation of physicians to have successful careers in medicine.

Nia Zalamea, MD, Olivia DeLozier, MD, Thomas Easterday, MD, Martin Fleming, MD, Sara Soule, MD, Dennis Foretia, MD and general surgery resident, Ashley Miller, MD (PGY5) were part of a multidisciplinary team that traveled to Carmona, Philippines from Feb. 10-16, 2024.

The group performed a total of 69 operations at the Pagamutang Bayan Ng Carmona Hospital. Next year’s annual mission trip, which will include teaching at Ospital Ng Maynila, is scheduled for February 2025.

As part of the ACS program “Operation Giving Back,” the ACS and the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) Surgical Training Collaborative partnered to expand their training hub to Lusaka, Zambia. A fall visit is expected after having launched a training hub in Huwasssa, Ethopia in 2022. Drs. Zalamea and Foretia, Division of General Surgery, were appointed to the Lusaka Quality and Research Workgroups, respectively.

READY FOR THE NEXT CHALLENGE

Ravi Mohanka, MD, returns to the U.S. to join the UT Health Science Center Division of Transplantation

In India, Medicine is a highly regarded profession, but specifically choosing to become a liver transplant surgeon was previously considered to be too specialized in a country with a historically low volume of cases. Undaunted, Dr. Ravi Mohanka, MD, chose to take this challenging path.

“As an organ, the liver is absolutely special because of the challenge and difficulty it presents. When we were training to be surgeons, the liver was considered one of the most difficult organs to operate on,” he said. “And we were often told by our teachers ‘don’t go there, that’s the most challenging organ.’”

Dr. Mohanka is a native of Nagpur in Central India and graduated from Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur. Growing up in a small community, he didn’t have any firsthand experience with transplantation. In 2003, after attending a transplant medical conference, he was inspired to seek expertise in liver transplantation at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital. The New Delhi academic institution had performed India’s first successful deceased donor liver transplant in 1998 and at that time, was the only active liver transplantation program in the country, performing 2025 procedures per year. Dr. Mohanka was encouraged to seek further fellowship training in the United States, where he would be exposed to centers performing upwards of 200-300 liver transplants per year. Following a research fellowship in transplant surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, he completed a fellowship in Abdominal Organ Transplantation at the renowned Thomas E. Startz Transplantation Institute in Pittsburgh, PA.

“My clinical fellowship was an amazing experience, because we did a high volume of all types of transplants, liver, kidneys, pancreas, intestine, multi-visceral, everything,” he said. “That was a huge amount of exposure and experience. And the way you train in the U.S. is amazing, because one is assured of good quality training, and you have to perform a certain number of transplants to qualify for certification.”

After four years in the U.S., Dr. Mohanka returned to India and went on to become one of the world’s most experienced liver transplantation surgeons, making it his purpose to educate, teach and train others in the field. He first worked as a faculty member at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi and then at Medanta, Medicity Hospital in Gurugram where he gained experience in living donor liver transplantation. “I spent about two years in Delhi and four years in Gurugram and we must have trained about 35 residents and fellows who all went on to develop good careers in either GI surgery, liver surgery or transplant,” he said.

After 40 years of gradual development, liver transplantation is no longer considered a novelty in India. According to Dr. Mohanka, India has gone from 25 liver transplants in 2003 to over 3,800 performed annually in 90-100 active centers. The country is becoming more self-sufficient with the increase in training programs and surgeons, who are now able to meet the needs of patients from small towns to larger cities.

Dr. Mohanka now looks forward to his next challenge in his role as a professor in the Division of Transplantation at UT Health Science Center. “There are three things that are of particular interest to me,” he said. “One is to grow a living donor transplant program in an area where there is a need. Second, is to expand pediatric transplants. Finally, in India, donor surgery is often done using laparoscopic and robotic techniques, something that is done in very few centers in the U.S. I hope to introduce these approaches to UT Health Science Center.”

Mohanka will practice at the Methodist Transplant Institute at Methodist University Hospital, a partnership with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT CONT.

Jason Vanatta, MD, Professor and Chief of the Division of Transplantation, said he and his team are excited to have recruited Dr. Mohanka to Memphis.

“He is internationally known for his living donor liver transplantation program,” Dr. Vanatta said. He has tremendous experience with over 1,500 living liver donor and transplantation cases. This high volume will be one of the most among living donor liver transplant surgeons in the country. His recruitment will make this procedure available for select patients in the Mid-South and for any patient that would like to be under our program’s care.”

Dr. Mohanka describes transplant operations from a surgeon’s perspective as instantly gratifying, providing the opportunity for a patient to return to normalcy as quickly as possible through the gift of a longer life.

“It’s so very gratifying that whenever you see a patient after, let’s say five years or 10 years of transplantation and you remember how bad they were at that time, it’s just very gratifying. So, it totally fulfils the purpose of being a doctor.”

VASCULAR SURGERY SIRA MARY DUSON, MD

Dr. Duson joins the UT Health Science Center Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery. She received her medical degree from Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Duson completed her general surgery residency at the MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD and a vascular surgery fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital/MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. She has previously served as an attending surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD and most recently at WakeMed Health in Raleigh, NC.

PEDIATRIC SURGERY SAUNDERS LIN, MD

Dr. Lin will join the UT Health Science Center Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Surgery. He received his medical degree from Texas A&M Health Science Center, College of Medicine in Temple, TX. Dr. Lin completed his general surgery residency training at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR followed by a pediatric surgery fellowship at The University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL.
