UTD has transformed with students BOBBY KARALLA Mercury Staff
My sister, a 2010 graduate of UTD, has been back to campus one or two times since she graduated. She can’t believe how much the university has changed. Back in her day, UTD had an enrollment of something like 14,000. I came to campus for the first time in 2008 and, honestly, it was that day when I decided I wanted to go to Mizzou. UTD was a cement desert, sometimes mixing in grass or rocks (that have spirit, though!) to ease the visual tension. But things happen, people change and I ended up here. My sister graduated at the end of my freshman year. When I look at old pictures from campus, or just think back to the day I first came here, it truly is unbelievable how much this place has changed. It seems like I’m graduating from a different university than she did. So now that the Class of 2013 is graduating, we can officially put two things to rest. One: Unless some of us are continuing our education elsewhere, we’ve all attended our final class …
ever. Think about that for a second. Celebrate. Two: UTD is no longer a small school. That myth can rest in peace. During my four years at UTD, it’s amazing how many ways everything and everyone I interact with at the university has grown. Since enrolling in fall 2009, the student body has exploded from 16,000 to almost 20,000. The EMAC program, of which I am a proud graduate, has gone from not existing to churning out a graduating class of nearly 30, among the highest in Arts and Humanities. The Mercury grew from a small staff of four or five to a regular staff of more than 25. We have a mall. We have dorms and dining halls and parking lots. We have a Plinth (still trying to figure that one out). And, yes, we still have that empty fountain that some people know about. But we can always say when we were freshmen, that thing worked. On one hand, our evolution is complete. We’re done with school, and now we’re off to face the real world, equipped with nothing more than an education and some debt. But we all had fun, met some amazing people and forged relationships that will hopefully last for many years. Our college adventure is over, and it’s on to the next one. What we are leaving behind, though, is nowhere near finished. UTD is going to change even more, and it’s going to get even bigger. It’s probably safe to use the word “better,” too. The decision makers have
earned our trust by now. Between reaching 25,000 students sometime in the next decade, finishing the ATEC and NSERL 2 buildings, completing the fourth and fifth residence halls, opening up a couple parking garages and topping it all off with an entire shopping center a block or two from campus, UTD is on pace to inflate faster than the cost of enrollment. We got our money’s worth. By the time your younger sibling, friend, classmate or random acquaintance walks the stage at a graduation, you might not recognize the place. Like my sister, if I come back to campus three or four years from now, it will feel like I’m in a different galaxy (I had to do it). When we — the seniors, the masters, the doctoral candidates — came to campus for the first time, it was impossible to foresee how much change we have experienced. I can’t imagine how much more new stuff is coming, but I do know that within three or four years you’ll barely be able to recognize the place. While our journey ends, another begins. The Class of 2016 is going to experience college in a totally unique way, just as we experienced it, just as my sister’s class experienced it. The beat goes on. In one way or another, we’ll all miss this place, and vice versa. We played a part in changing UTD, and now it’s time to see what else it has in store for us. I’d pay attention, too. The value of that piece of paper we’re all about to receive depends on it.

UTD continues to grow, progress

On May 1, I stood at the groundbreaking for the fourth residence hall waiting for my turn to walk up to the podium to speak. For the record, my term had ended about 10 or so hours before that. During the wait, my mind was still lost somewhere in the memories of the wonderful past year. And here I was again, waiting for probably my last public speech in my capacity as Student Government President. As a freshman in fall 2010, 17 and a half years old, coming to a college in a country far different than my own and then being awarded the honor of leading a student body of 19,000 plus students, was not exactly my plan. Though that is what UT Dallas is all about: providing you life-changing opportunities, some great friends, a decent college experience and, most importantly, the culture of striving for excellence.
As a high school student, I had never heard of UTD and frankly it was never my top choice school. I came here to hopefully transfer to UT Austin after my first year. At the end of my first year, I decided against it; UTD had me captivated. I think what stopped me was the dynamic personality of the school. We are definitely a young university, and we are growing and want to grow. I had the opportunity to create something for myself, be a shareholder in that growth and leave my legacy. UTD is in the midst of an incredible period of growth, improvement and achievement. It is such an honor for me to be a part of that; it has indeed been a fantastic experience for me. I reflect not only on the tremendous growth that has taken place during my time at UTD, but also on the way that growth has taken place. Serving as SG President this past year, I have had the opportunity of experiencing firsthand the hard work UTD puts towards making good ideas a reality. One of the most gratifying parts of my position was the rate at which I was able to tell students “problem solved.” Last year, the big complaints were not enough housing, not enough dining and not enough parking. Now we have a new residence hall, with two more on the
way, and two new dining options, with two more on the way. The growth at the university is not just restricted to its high enrollment numbers and SAT scores; rather, it is expansive and includes all walks of the UTD community. Every day while walking to class, I notice something new being constructed, hear about a new academic program or witness some cool event outside the Student Union. We are ready for even further growth the future entails, for more students and more faculty members and for more progress. It is an indicator of progress and the dynamic personality of UTD and the UTD community. Being at UTD has been one of the most rewarding and gratifying experiences of my life. A lot of you are leaving and starting new chapters in your life — a new job, graduate school — but I am sure whenever you return to campus in the next few months, years or longer you will surely witness the same growth. I am sure people who were here before you and the ones coming after you will be able to relate to the spirit of positive change. For all of you graduating, good luck with whatever you are trying to do. For the rest of you leaving for summer, I will see all of you next spring!

Seniors reveal yearlong capstones Mechanical Engineering seniors partner with companies for final projects MIGUEL PEREZ Mercury Staff
Clicks of steel and whirring fans filled the spaces of the North Lab machine shop as guests gathered to admire the yearlong capstone projects of career bound mechanical engineering seniors. The judges, from faculty members to reps from Texas Instruments, snaked their way around the crowded shop scribbling on concealed clipboards, looking up only to examine the mechanical prototypes from the 12 teams participating in the ME Senior Design Expo on May 3. Team Ratched Robotics drew one of the largest crowds at the back of the metal warehouse with its low-cost, highpayload robotic arm. Using a repurposed Playstation controller, Aaron Plauche, ME senior and member of Team Ratched, maneuvered the artificial arm to jitter up and down collecting pieces of metal. “We designed it based off of the human arm. Our big actuation is the artificial muscles,” Plauche said. “The way they work is that we’ll inflate them with air and use a controller to move it. It was designed for a manufacturing industry application.” Khiem Phan, an ME senior and part of Team Thermite, broke down the basics of his team’s thermoelectric element loading machine to passersby. Phan stressed the vast differences between past projects and his group’s capstone. “The time and cost: all those elements are totally different from the ones I deal with in class. This relies on teamwork. If you don’t have a team, you just can’t do it,” said Phan. “I have had internships before, but this is totally different. For this project, you work with the company to make an actual product.” Elsewhere, members of Team Creative Engineering demonstrated their hovering quadcopter powered by a thermo-

electric power generator, created under the mentorship of Marlow Industries. Team member Jason Mefford said the thermoelectric modules are used to either cool or heat using electric power. Harnessing both the hot and cold elements, you can get energy out of it. The energy eventually powers the small, helicopter-like gadget floating atop the generator. Other design projects displayed in the shop included anything from warped wafer handling systems to improvements in high pressure, high temperature test chambers. The importance of the ME capstone is apparent from the interactions that oc-
curred during the exposition. Students were challenged to connect and collaborate with seasoned industry advisors to create products with tangible applications. “As far as real world experience, that’s what I was really looking for with Senior Design,” said Victor Alfaro, whose team partnered with Halliburton, one of the biggest oilfield service companies in the world. “Throughout these nine months, it was tough. In the end, it was wellworth it. Not without its merited struggles, the capstone project unmistakably helped ME seniors bring their undergraduate education to a remarkable close.

Program celebrates students’ media projects

Praise, laugher and even a few tears could be seen as professors introduced each graduating student at the Emerging Media and Communication Capstone Celebration. The celebration took place in the evening of May 1 in the Clark Center. Classmates, faculty, friends and family filled the auditorium to cheer on each student and celebrate a semester’s worth of hard work. Twenty-eight EMAC graduating students gave the audience a brief look at the culmination of their projects, which covered a gamut of topics from basketball to Dubstep culture in Dallas. One by one, each student stepped on stage after their faculty adviser gave the audience a brief introduction. The students then gave a five-minute presentation accompanied by a PowerPoint or slideshow. EMAC professor Dave Parry gave the opening remarks at the beginning of the evening, praising all of the students’ projects that were the result of countless hours of work, he said. Graduating EMAC students are required to complete a capstone project in their last semester in which they complete a creative or research project that explores
the interaction of the arts with digital technology. Several students chose to focus on the interaction of digital media and certain populations. EMAC senior Thi Le’s presentation, titled “The New Path of Asian American Youth,” explored how popular YouTube personalities such as those in Wong Fu Productions, impact the identities of young Asian Americans. Similarly, EMAC graduate student Christy Terry looked at African American body image and what she said is its victimization in Western culture, in her presentation titled “Mirror, Media: The African American Body Image Discrepancy.” Another theme that was widely explored was music. Kyle Nuss created a music website dedicated to the sound of future bass music, while John Langdon set up a website based on the creation and sharing of Spotify playlists along with a podcast of himself introducing each playlist. Chelsea Upton focused on a different angle and explored women, queer musicians and how gender and sexuality are expressed through music in her blog called Not a Neophyte. The end of the presentations brought the announcement of the winners of the best undergraduate and graduate student capstone project. Bobby Karalla won the undergraduate award for his website,
Behind Box Scores, which explored advanced basketball statistics. Karla Yenelie Munoz received the award for best graduate capstone project, in which she aimed to provide comprehensive content for fanfiction writers with a website called Write That Fanfiction. Munoz said she was taken by surprise when her name was called as the winner of the graduate capstone award. “If anyone was filming at the time, my reaction was a dropped jaw,” Munoz said. “I was convinced one of the other capstone grads was going to win. All the projects were amazing.” True to the social media nature of the EMAC program, the Twitter hashtag, #emacC2, was created for those who wanted to discuss the presentations. Tweets of congratulations, well wishes and positive comments were seen throughout the evening. Parry also had much praise while reflecting back on the semester and the capstone projects. “I enjoyed working on the diversity of projects that students took on for their capstones. These projects really demonstrate the breadth and depth of which our students are capable,” Parry said. “I am really proud of what students were able to accomplish and how well they presented their projects to the public.”

Dear Class of 2013, Congratulations! All that hard work, studying, and caffeine finally paid off. Welcome to membership of an elite group: UT Dallas Alumni. Five years ago, the Class of 2008 began a tradition: the Class Challenge. Since their gift of two chess tables, each class has been challenged to go above and beyond the classes before. Last year, the Class of 2012 raised funds for twelve $500 textbook scholarships. Because we are the first class to make it past the end of the world, we challenge the Class of 2013 to something that has never before been approached – 100% participation. We challenge every single member of the class of 2013 to make a gift to whatever area of UT Dallas you choose to support. Give back towards scholarships for future Comets. Donate to your school or major. Make a gift in honor of your parents, friends or a favorite professor. The challenge is to participate in making UT Dallas even better. Many of you will undoubtedly wonder, “Why should I give more money to this school when I’ve already paid tuition?” First, we ask you to think about all the people that contributed to allow us to receive such a great education. Many of us are on scholarships that exist solely because of past donations. To those of us not on scholarship: did you know our tuition and fees cover less than half the cost of operating the university? Even if you are paying “full tuition”, someone else is subsidizing your education. We, as alumni, need to give back to keep the UT Dallas experience affordable for each new class of students. Even so, many of you are still thinking, “I’ve already graduated, so it doesn’t help me.” Except it does. When you support your university, you provide it with more resources to draw the brightest students and best faculty. Each year that the incoming class gets smarter and the graduating class gets more qualified, UT Dallas’s rankings shoot up and your degree carries more weight. As a graduate from such a young institution, the investment in your degree will continue to gain interest year after year with our alumni support.
